Arrivano a Rimini, insieme ad Irina Alberti, i dissidenti russi Vladimir Bukovskj e Tatiana Goritcheva. Partecipano un grande artista come William Congdon e Giulio Andreotti, che ritornerà quasi sempre.

150.000 le presenze, triplicate rispetto alla prima edizione, una trentina i convegni in programma. Tra i relatori, il giornalista Tadeusz Mazowiecki, che nel 1989 sarà premier del primo governo non comunista della Polonia, e il regista Krzysztof Zanussi.
