president ’s welcome Welcome to the 56th season of polo at the Eldorado Polo Club. Players, patrons, and spectators alike will benefit from a full complement of amateur through 12-Goal polo. Please join us every weekend, January through March; our highlevel polo promises to be some of the most popular and exciting polo of the last few seasons. Lake Farms, the current owners of Eldorado Polo Club, is currently under contract for the sale of the land to Goldenvoice, the producers of Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals. Upon completion of the environmental impact report and final negotiations with the City of Indio, Lake Farms and Goldenvoice will close the sale in the first half in 2013. Planning ahead, a new corporation will be formed, which will be governed, as originally envisioned 56 years ago, by the players. Goldenvoice has been a great supporter and partner of the Eldorado Polo Club. The relationship has been advantageous for both entities. The sale, further maintenance, and continuous improvement agreements between Goldenvoice and Eldorado will preserve polo at our club for a long time to come. My special thanks goes out to Eldorado’s entire staff for their commitment, hard work, and allegiance. Without each of them, polo at our club would be unsustainable. At Eldorado, polo is our one and only passion, and your participation, thoughts, and suggestions will help us to strive to be all we can be. The owners, members, and staff wish you the healthiest and happiest year in our upcoming polo season.

from jan hart This year marks the beginning of a new phase in the history of the Eldorado Polo Club. Building upon our 56 years of polo tradition, we are strongly committed to developing Eldorado as the desert’s premier polo destination over the next decade. We have initiated a rejuvenation of the grounds and facilities, to benefit an increasing number of players and visitors from across North and South America, and abroad. Taking the helm of our experienced team is our new Polo Manager, Graham Bray, who brings years of polo experience to the club. He will be working with Polo Assistants Rob Roenisch and Debbie Morrison and our dedicated team to make this year memorable. Our facilities are in the experienced hands of Chief Engineer Santos Macabale and Field Supervisor Jesse Valenzuela. Our Accountant, Darlene Molton, is minding all the checks and balances and James a’Court will be filling your social calendars as returning Marketing and Events Director. Kyle Fargey brings his nine years of teaching experience back to the club as Director of the Eldorado Polo and Riding Academy. We invite polo players of all levels to contact him and get in the game. In preparation for the winter 2013 season, Graham and the Eldorado team have dedicated themselves to several upgrades to the fields,

including aerating and deep tining, then covering the fields with 7,000 tons of sand and aggravating. The exercise track was ground up with 18 inch rippers to alleviate the waving effect and then covered with 12 inches of new sand for improved footing and drainage. Along with these upgrades, the club also got a makeover: freshly trimmed Oleander bushes and trees; reconstructed barns; and other fieldside maintenance. This season, ROC’s Firehouse Grille brings their fresh homemade fare back to the Cantina and the Club House. Fans of polo can enjoy watching polo games from the Cantina patio, or join us for Sunday Brunch and polo at the Club House. Both facilities host a number of exciting social events throughout the season, including the annual Governor’s Bash, and are available for private and corporate events. Our devoted staff sees every year as an opportunity to improve quality and access to all aspects of the polo lifestyle, for fans, sponsors, and, especially, players. We honor the Eldorado tradition of running the best player-focused club in the desert with continued high-level polo competition and exceptional facilities. I look forward to seeing players and fans, new and experienced, on the sidelines and hitting the fields in the 2012–2013 season!

T

In addition, interactive exhibits and programs at the La Quinta Museum engage all ages. Guests of the museum, which is free-of-charge, can see traveling exhibits and La Quinta artifacts with items of historical significance, as well.

here’s a lot to love in La Quinta! Explore and experience this vibrant city in between matches or after your day on the fields is done. The City of La Quinta is located just minutes from the Eldorado Polo Club.

With all these offerings, it’s no surprise that La Quinta is becoming an entertainment focal point in the desert. Many dining venues feature quaint patio space for enjoying the scenic surroundings, and shops that you’ll discover are quite varied.

Blessed with the natural beauty of the Santa Rosa Mountains, La Quinta is known as the “Gem of the Desert.” La Quinta began as a private retreat for Hollywood legends like Greta Garbo and Clark Gable with the inception of the La Quinta Hotel in 1926 (now the exclusive La Quinta Resort & Club). For years, the rich and famous escaped to La Quinta’s secluded hotel and casitas and, in 1982, the City of La Quinta officially incorporated.

From the quaint La Quinta Village to the bustling shopping corridor on Highway 111, you will find everything from unique boutiques to big box favorites. You’ll find gifts, fashion, home décor and accessories, art galleries, wine shops, gourmet foods, coffee houses, day spas and so much more!

Home of the Humana Challenge PGA TOUR event in January, La Quinta is known for its pristine golf courses— which provide challenging play and breathtaking scenery. The City of La Quinta’s position along the mountainside showcases extraordinary views for patio dining, golf, poolside lounging and hiking. The city offers an exciting range of healthy activities, community gatherings, special events, and cultural programs centered around health and wellness to capture La Quinta’s essence as a healthy, active, and captivating community— a place where people just feel better. Quality hiking trials, as well as paths for walking, biking, and horseback riding, create many opportunities for physical activity. Parks and golf courses are within the La Quinta Village area or nearby, along with treasures such as the Fred Wolff Nature Preserve. Also playing a role in La Quinta’s health and wellness program is the city’s SilverRock Resort. This magnificent 525-acre, city-owned property is home to the nationally acclaimed Arnold Palmer Classic Course, a temporary clubhouse and driving range.

There are many reasons to return to La Quinta. Every March, the La Quinta Arts Festival, ranked second in the nation, features more than 200 artists, entertainment, food and wine. It is sponsored by the La Quinta Arts Foundation. The Foundation also presents Blues & Brews in November and Art Under the Umbrellas on select Saturdays throughout April. The Chamber of Commerce hosts a Hot Rod & Custom Car Show in January and a Taste of La Quinta event in February. Adding to the city’s emphasis on healthy living, on Sunday mornings during the season, the Certified Farmers Market sells locally grown fruits and produce, flowers and fresh breads in Old Town La Quinta. To explore La Quinta ‘virtually’ and plan your day, download the city’s free iPhone app for instant access to La Quinta hotels, restaurants and retail stores. For a complete listing of shops, restaurants, activities and upcoming events, go to PlayInLaQuinta.com. The City of La Quinta is now on Facebook and Twitter as well, so get connected!

intro to polo

T

he Sport of Kings has its roots in Persia, dating back to the 5th century BCE. Polo traveled steadily west, through India, the Middle East and England, to land on North American shores in the 1870s. Originally a war-training exercise for soldiers, the modern sport of polo is a game played by two teams of four players (or three for arena polo).

The game runs four, six or eight chukkers (or periods) that run 7½ minutes each on a field that spans 300 yards long by 180 yards wide. Between each chukker, players have four minutes to switch horses. The play is very intense, so players generally play each horse for only one chukker. After each goal scored, the players switch playing direction in order to even out field and weather conditions.

23

eldoradopoloclub.com – 23

eldorado polo club

intro to polo

di vot s tomp

Spectators descend onto the field at half-time to replace pieces of turf dug up by the horses during play. The goal is to remedy the grass surface, so that the ball travels smoothly down the field.

f l a g m an

The designated person standing behind each set of goal posts who flags each successful goal “in” by waving the flag up high or “out” by waving the flag below the waist.

foul

referee

If the two umpires on the field disagree on a call, the referee, or “third man,” on the sidelines has the final say.

r ide -of f ( or bum p)

Similar to a body check in hockey, this is a defensive move in which a horse’s shoulder is pressed into the shoulder of another player’s horse, in an attempt to drive him or her off the line of the ball. Bumping an opponent at more than a 45-degree angle, however, will result in a penalty.

Any infraction of the USPA rules, ranging from dangerous riding to interrupting the line of the ball; the severity of a foul depends on how dangerous the infraction was to the horse or player.

goa l

A goal is scored on the field each time the ball completely passes across the goal line and between the goal posts (at any height). The term “goal” also refers to a player’s handicap rating and is used to denote the level of play in a match, as determined by the cumulative handicap ratings of the players on the team.

hook

A defensive technique in which a player uses his or her mallet to interfere with an opponent’s swing.

knock-in

When a team in an offensive drive hits the ball across the opponent’s backline, the defending team resumes play with a free hit, or “knock in,” from their back line.

l ine of t he bal l

Once a ball is hit, the player who is closest to the ball with the narrowest angle has the right of way. Opposing players cannot cross the line too closely to the player who has the right of way, nor can they approach the “on line” player at too sharp an angle, or they risk a foul and subsequent penalty.

pe n a lt y

A free hit may be awarded when a foul is committed. Each infraction of the rules of play, or foul, is given a rating between one and nine by the umpires. The severity of the infraction determines the level of penalty imposed.

pl aye r p osi t ions

Player positions are represented by the numbers on their polo jerseys (from one to four). The Number One player primarily assumes an offensive position on the field and is responsible for neutralizing the opposing team’s Number 4 player (their primary defense). The Number Two is the mover and the shaker, a transition player who backs up the Number One player, and aggressively seeks to move the ball upfield. The Number Three player is the quarterback, who focuses on game strategy, field advantage and moving the ball. This player is often the highest rated player on the team. Finally, player Number Four is primarily responsible for guarding the goal, and preventing the opposing team from scoring. 24

t hr ow-in

Play begins or is resumed when the umpire throws the ball into play. Teams line up for a throw in by the umpire by facing their ponies towards the direction of their goal end.

um pir e s

Two mounted officials are on the polo field for all games; they are responsible for ensuring safety and enforcing the rules of play.

uni t e d stat e s polo a sso ci ation (u spa )

This polo-governing body is responsible for sanctioning polo clubs and tournaments, managing and publishing rules and handicap ratings, and organizing, promoting, and supporting polo across North America.

the uspa handicap syst e m The United States Polo Association (USPA) handicap system was put in place by the organization’s first president, Henry Lloyd Herbert, in 1890. The intention of handicaps is to make sure that teams composed of players of varying skill are evenly matched on the playing field, and that neither team plays with an unfair advantage. A player’s handicap is a rating between -2 (or C) and 10 and is expressed in “goals.” The USPA recently refined the rating system to use half points to apply to players ranked above -1 Goal and below 2 Goal handicaps (e.g., 1.5 Goals). A player’s goal rating has nothing to do with how many goals he or she may score in a game or season. Rather, it is based on general mastery of the fundamentals, horsemanship, sense of strategy and conduct, and quality of ponies. Every polo club has a Handicap Committee that evaluates its players and submits its goal-rating recommendations to a Circuit Handicap Committee, who passes it on to the National Handicap Committee. The USPA evaluates handicaps twice a year, in July and in January, though it reserves the right to change a player’s handicap at any time. Currently, about two thirds of USPA-rated players are rated 2 or less, and there are 10 active players currently rated at 10 Goals. A team’s handicap is the sum total rating of all of its players. If one team in a competition is rated lower than the other, that team may be awarded a number of goals in an attempt to make playing conditions more even. The number of goals awarded is dependent on the difference between the two teams’ handicaps, the goal level of the tournament, and the number of chukkers being played.

Regular polo is played throughout the year while matches, and domestic and international tournaments are usually played during high season, which begins in early November and ends in April. Polo equipment, group instruction and personalized training are available for beginner and intermediate players. Expert staffing is also on hand for lessons in English or Western-style riding and jumping, or enjoy guided trail rides throughout the tropical property grounds. “With the distinct advantage of a world-class polo pony breeding program on site, we are in a unique position to host countless international test matches as well as tailor polo programs to each of our clients’ specific needs,” says Calixto Garcia-Velez, Director of Polo and Equestrian Operations. “Outside of polo, the fact that our resort offers such a variety of other amenities makes us the premier destination for any polo player traveling with family or friends.” If horses are not your cup of tea, hit the greens at Teeth of the Dog golf course. Ranked as the number one course in the Caribbean and 43rd in the top 100 courses worldwide by Golf Magazine, Pete Dye’s Teeth of the Dog at Casa de Campo attracts the best professional and amateur golfers in the world. Only a stone’s throw away from the amazing Casa de Campo resort is the unique historical village of Altos de Chavon, a handcrafted replica of a 16th century Mediterranean village. Dominican artisans created the unique stone pathways, decorative ironwork, and enchanting buildings, and the town is full of galleries, museums, boutiques, restaurants, bars, and performing arts.

apes hill polo centre St. James, Barbados

www.apeshillpolobarbados.com Apes Hill Polo Centre is located in the Apes Hill Club, a luxurious planned community on 470 acres in the center of Barbados. The club features a brand new golf course and full-sized polo field surrounded by rolling meadows, dense tropical forest, coral stone quarries, and the cristal blue of the Caribbean Sea.

singapore polo club Mount Pleasant, Singapore www.singaporepoloclub.org/

Rich in history and tradition, the Singapore Polo Club is set on acres of lush, tropical grounds, a world apart from Singapore’s bustling pace yet located just minutes from the heart of the city’s business center. With a season that extends from early March through mid-December, almost any time of year is a good one to visit. Singapore Polo Club is the city-state’s premier equestrian center, with both indoor and outdoor riding facilities. Chukkers are played throughout the week, and there are a variety of local and international tournaments scheduled throughout the season. There is a qualified polo instructor on staff and a variety of club lease ponies to choose from. Riding programs at the Singapore Polo Club include basic pleasure riding, competitive dressage, and jumping at various levels. Visitors may also explore the wide selection of jungle riding trails that are accessible from the club.

The polo season in Barbados runs from December through May, and tournament play runs throughout the week. Tournaments are often held in cooperation with the two other main polo clubs in Barbados, Holders and Lion Castle. Visitors who would like to participate or sign up for individual or group lessons can rent horses (equipment and drinks provided) from the school at Apes Hill Polo Club, which is managed by Jamie Dickson. Horses are a major part of daily life in Barbados, and subsequently, equine activities are ample. Horse racing at the Garrison Savannah, one of the oldest racing tracks in the Americas, runs year-round and hosts the Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup in March and the Barbados Triple Crown in April. There are also many incredible riding trails and scenic rides along the beach for all horse lovers. Barbados offers much to explore, including botanical wonders like the Flower Forest and the Welchman Hall Gully, ample white-sand beaches, sailing, fishing, safari tours, and unbelievable scuba diving and snorkeling opportunities. Though it is a relatively small island, Barbados is one of the leading tourist destinations in the Caribbean. It represents the best of the Caribbean, with its endless adventures and fun, friendly culture.

Far more than a polo club, the club also boasts a restaurant and bar, gym and fitness facilities, gaming room, spa, swimming pool, Jacuzzi, tennis, archery, squash, boxing, fencing, pilates, yoga, Internet room, and outdoor children’s playground. Within a few miles of the club, you will find hotels, restaurants, shopping, and green space, but with all of the unique indoor and outdoor activities onsite, there is hardly a reason to leave the Singapore Polo Club.

why polo?

Polo has opened up a world of adventure for me.

–Pat Nesbitt

Polo, for me, starts with my love of horses, followed by an adrenaline addiction and a craving for competition.

–Krista Bonaguidi

I have a strong passion for horses and competition. Polo is a true sport—it is challenging and competitive and at the end of the game, everyone shakes hands. I have turned many lifetime moments into memories on the polo field, and I love sharing those memories with other players.

–Dan Walker

I love polo because of the horses, the adrenalin and the camaraderie. –Jennifer Luttrell

why polo?

The wonderful horses, the great friends, and the heart-pumping thrill of the game. I love team sport, and this is one that I get to play near home, with some amazing professional players.

–Dan Horn

I love polo because it’s a great, fun team competition, and it gives an adrenaline rush like no other sport! –Geraldine Strunsky

I love the horses, the speed and the thrill of the game. Also, I was afraid to continue chuck wagon racing—it’s a little scary!

–Pat Powell

I was hooked on polo from day one. The combined effort of horse and rider, the thrill of victory and the lessons of defeat have kept me playing for years. It’s the only sport that you can play as you begin to age, by virtue of getting younger horses! Also, my wife says that polo is better for me than a mistress.

–David Ragland

I love horses, I love team sports, I love challenges, I love the work-out, and I find polo and the polo club to be a relaxing escape!

el d or a d o p olo talent join s te a m u spa The United States Polo Association (USPA) established the Team USPA program in 2010 to grow and sustain the sport of polo by identifying talented young American players and providing opportunities to enhance their abilities. The Team USPA program selects the most talented players from across the country, ages 18–23 years old, and provides one-of-a-kind mentoring, training and playing opportunities. Players are chosen based on their dedication to the sport, their potential for development, and their natural ability. Players are expected to obtain umpire certification and give back to junior polo, teaching polo skills to help youth and beginner players. Several players in the Team USPA program are California players, including Jesse Bray, Nicholas Morrison, Carlitos Galindo, Nicolai Galindo, Collin White, Remy Muller, Chris Collins, and Jared Sheldon. Eldorado Polo caught up with a few team members and explored their thoughts on polo, the Team USPA program, and their plans for the upcoming season.

How did you get started in polo?

My dad got me started when I was really young. I played my first games in the Junior Polo program at Eldorado when I was around 6.

I started riding when I was about 5; my mom and dad both played polo so they got me started at a young age. I took a break a few years later, and then got seriously involved back in polo when I was 14.

What is your favorite aspect of the Team USPA program?

They help you find jobs, even if you don’t have any horses; they try to provide opportunities for you. It was great to get instruction from some of the top players in the U.S.: Owen Rinehart, Hector Galindo, and Adam Snow.

The opportunity to travel to Florida and learn from some of the top polo professionals—it was a great learning experience.

What are your polo plans for 2013?

I will play in the 6 Goal and 12 Goal leagues at Eldorado until the end of March, and I hope to play at Santa Barbara in the summer.

I have jobs playing in the 8 and 12 Goal in Sarasota, Florida, in the Winter season, and in Houston in the 8 Goal Spring league.

Any advice for young players?

Play your hardest in every game, practice lots, and don’t give up. Also, don’t party too hard—save your energy for the field!

Ride as many horses as possible, and play as much polo as you can.

Something few people know about you?

Once someone cut my hair like Bozo the clown.

I really love soccer, and I am an excellent Indian leg wrestler.

Polo is a tradition in my family, so I started very young. I think I was in the lead-line group in Pee Wee polo at Eldorado when I was three years old.

My family plays polo so I started when I was young. I also like to play baseball, basketball, and soccer, so I did not become serious about polo until my late teens. I worked for Steve Crowder during college and played in a lot of intercollegiate polo, and then I was hooked.

My mom Debbie got me started riding at a young age. I started playing polo at Eldorado when I was around 18.

The program staff members are so helpful and supportive. I feel like I can call them any time with questions and they give really good advice.

It’s great that you can always call someone for help or advice. It’s a very supportive program.

They help you promote your talents. The program opens doors to job opportunities.

I hope to play at Eldorado in the Winter, then head to Houston in the Spring, and to Kentucky and Nashville for the Summer.

I will play in the 6 Goal and 12 Goal leagues at Eldorado in the Winter, then I will play in Houston in the Spring and Fall, and I hope to play in Santa Barbara again in the Summer.

I work for Coca-Cola polo in Florida. I ride, practice and prep all of Gillian Johnston’s ponies for her. It’s a great job!

Stay in school! But at the same time, follow your polo dreams and always work hard to try and achieve them.

Work hard and help everyone out around you. What comes around, goes around, and you never know who will help you out one day. Always respect the horses; they are the most important part of the game.

Ride all the time!

I am a soccer fanatic!

I recently got engaged to the best girl in the world, Dani Kennedy.

I am the only Aussie-born member of Team USPA.

Ohana Ranch has some of the best made and green horses in the US, regardless of your level of play. Our breed stock is varied: Argentine, US thoroughbred, New Zealand, now even exploring some amazing Appendix. We are proud to say that we’ve made horses that have won in recent US Opens, for 10-goal pros as well as sponsors. Our promise: no horse leaves the ranch that I, as a one-goal sponsor can’t ride, but will play as if you’re worth 10 goals. You will love our horses, or we will make one that you do. Talk to us about training those beauties you bought in Argentina, but aren’t playing the way you’d like. Dan will work wonders. — Kelly Maloney, Owner, Ohana Ranch Polo

interview

the m an behind the m a llet

An interview with Henry Trione

If one of the greatest measures of a man’s success is his ability to give back to his community, then Henry Trione is indeed a very great man. Henry Trione is well recognized in Southern California for his business accomplishments in finance, real estate, lumber, and wine. Yet more often than not, he is recognized as a philanthropist, contributing significant time and funds to institutions and nonprofit organizations. Eldorado Polo Club has benefited from Henry Trione’s great energy, enthusiasm, and generosity towards polo, which continues to this day, with the tradition of the Trione Vineyards Senior’s Tournament. At 91, Henry is still a keen Eldorado supporter. Look for Henry and his wife Eileen on the sidelines and say hello—he is always pleased to meet fellow polo enthusiasts. Eldorado Polo spoke with Henry about his ties to the Eldorado Polo Club, and his enduring love for the sport.

how did you first come to play polo?

I always enjoyed horses and when I met a fellow in Santa Rosa, California, named Bob Walter, I took up the sport. Bob had moved to Santa Rosa from Chicago. He gave me one of his nice, easy horses to ride and showed me the basics. I was addicted to the game almost right away.

when did your history with Eldorado begin?

I have been involved in the Eldorado Polo Club since its inception. I started to come play polo in the desert in the early 1950s. I played in Santa Rosa and at the San Francisco Club, and then I learned of the group of people heading out to the desert to play. I thought that sounded great. I was one of the original investors in the land purchased to build Eldorado Polo Club.

do you have other passions that equaled your interest in polo?

I was always very active in business. Between that and polo and my family, I had a full plate. I played polo for pure enjoyment. I tried to play every weekend in Santa Rosa or in the desert.

you have made many contributions to eldorado. what do you consider your fondest?

I helped to start the Senior’s Polo tournament, which invites players over 50 years of age to play. Alex Jacoy, Susan Stovall, and I started this tournament over 20 years ago. There are some great traditions involved—we always play golf, have a great dinner reception, and give tournament

caps out to all participants. We have had up to 8 teams play in the tournament over a weekend, and it has always been an event that everyone enjoys.

what are some of your favorite polo memories?

I have made so many good friends over the years. I made a good friend from Canada, Charles Hetherington, as well as many others from the United States and all over the world. I just loved to play with so many friends and talented players—on the main field and on the field that is now in front of the Cantina. I also have fond memories of playing with my sons, Victor and Mark. We named our team the “Italian Stallions” and we often played together on weekends at the Santa Rosa Polo Club.

what are your thoughts on eldorado today, as the 56th year of polo kicks off?

I am very happy with everything that is happening at the club. I enjoy sitting on the Cantina patio or in the Club House and watching the competitive weekend polo. The facility is great and the owners and staff are working hard to make the club a great place to be. I think the sale of the club will benefit polo, and I hope that it will perpetuate polo at Eldorado for a long time. Thank you Henry, we hope to see you soon at Eldorado.

Modern pain relief and range of motion restoration

Rapid Release TECHNOLOGY Fast. Painless. Lasting.

RRT uses planar wave energy to break down pain-causing scar tissue adhesions in soft tissue caused by surgery, trauma, or repetitive stress.

TREATS: • Carpal tunnel syndrome • Tendonitis, muscle spasms, trapped nerves • Suspensory pulls, bow tendons and other lameness injuries • Contractures, neuromas, adhesions • Back and shoulder pain • Headaches, TMJ • Joint pain: ankles, wrists, knees, tennis elbow

Safe, painless and effective treatment for all polo athletes: both players and their equine teammates! A friend’s horse was lame for many months, even after being treated by two vets multiple times. I used the RRT on her hip for a total of 9 treatments, and she’s completely cured! Her vet said she would never play polo again. And she’s back, better than ever! I use the RRT before I play my mare, and she performs much better every time! ~ Danielle Travis, Ranked Number One Women’s Polo Player

in memoriam

a true gentleman: william mackall (mack) jason january 6, 1926 – december 30, 2011

William Mackall Jason, fondly known to family and friends as “Mack,” was an original founder of the Eldorado Polo Club in 1957. Mack lived a full and happy life as a loving family man, a successful business executive, and a passionate polo player; but above all, Mack Jason was a gentleman. With family roots in North Carolina, Mack was born in Portland, Oregon in 1926 and lived in the Bay Area for 84 of his 85 years. He was predeceased by the love of his life, vivacious Madelyn Gilmore Jason, whom he married in 1949. Mack was very proud of their four children, eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Mack and Madelyn also shared a love for horses. For their wedding, Madelyn presented Mack with polo mallets and he presented her with a set of golf clubs. The polo mallets multiplied and the golf clubs collected dust.

The Jason and Gilmore families began to invest in property and play polo in the desert area in the early 1950s. In 1957, a group of investors purchased land adjacent to the Eldorado Country Club to establish two fields, stables and a club house. Mack and Madelyn Jason invested in the Lake Farms partnership that has owned the land on which the Eldorado Polo Club has operated since 1957. Mack shared a passion for polo with his family for over 50 years. He was an ambassador to the Federation of International Polo, Board member of the USPA, and past Governor of the USPA Pacific Coast Circuit. Mack was instrumental in bringing polo back to the Menlo Circus Club and was actively involved in the club, alongside Madelyn, daughter Lyn, and his extended family. Over the course of his polo career, Mack achieved a 3-Goal handicap. He loved playing at Eldorado, and after retiring from the game, he loved watching games with friends and family from their table at the Eldorado Polo Club House. Mack Jason will be greatly missed by his extended family at Eldorado Polo Club: the Lake Farms owners, the Board of Directors, staff members, and playing members. Mack—we will save you a seat this Sunday. Rest in peace.

In 2010, ROC’s Firehouse Grill took over the kitchens of The Cantina and the Club House at the Eldorado Polo Club. ROC’s is a family venture, run by retired fireman Roland Cook and his wife Jayme. They feature firehousestyle comfort food: great tasting, abundant, fresh, and affordable. Visit the Palm Desert Location or ROC’s Firehouse Grille at the Cantina. Open 6 days a week, Tuesday through Sunday from 7:00 am till late, the Cantina at Eldorado Polo Club offers breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late-night snacks. Spend an afternoon watching the sun set on the fieldside patio, enjoy an up-close view of an incredible polo match, or spend the evening enjoying the horseshoe bar, pool, dancing, terrific homemade food, and live entertainment after Sunday polo.

Enter the doors of Castelli’s Ristorante and you’ll believe you have just stepped into a small bistro in romantic Tuscany. Soft lighting, lace curtains, dark wood, and an abundance of fresh flowers and greenery set the tone for a wonderful dining experience.
