Los viajes del viento The Wind Journeys
Desde hace algunos años, la cinematografía colombiana vive un proceso de expansión propiciado por la Ley de Cine sancionada en 2003; a ritmo sostenido, una nueva generación de realizadores comienza a explorar regiones, temas y géneros postergados largamente. En su segundo largometraje, Ciro Guerra se adentra en algunos de esos territorios vírgenes, un poco a lomo de burro y otro poco a pie, para crear una road movie de tanta originalidad que casi no tiene rutas: una road movie a campo traviesa. Sus protagonistas son Ignacio Carrillo, un juglar taciturno en su última travesía por el norte colombiano, y Fermín, un joven empecinado en aprender los secretos de la música regional. Al paso de maestro y aprendiz (interpretados ambos, como muchos de quienes encuentran en sus peripecias, por auténticos artistas del vallenato) por valles, sabanas y montañas capturados en panorámicas imponentes, asoman sin clisés el folklore y los mitos del Caribe colombiano. Y, sobre todo, los sonidos únicos de la cultura costeña, una cruza de tambores en trance con acordeones a veces melancólicos y otras, posiblemente, endemoniados.
A few years ago, Colombian cinema entered a period of growth, brought about by the Film Law of 2003. A new generation of film directors has increasingly started to explore long postponed regions, subjects and genres. Ciro Guerra’s second feature film penetrates some of these virgin territories, part of the way on a donkey and part of the way on foot, to create a road movie so original it almost lacks roads; a cross country road movie. Its main characters are Ignacio Carrillo, a gloomy minstrel on his last journey through the north of Colombia, and Fermín, a young man bent on learning the secrets of the local music. Teacher and apprentice (both played by authentic “vallenato” artists, like many of the people they meet along their journey) travel through valleys, savannas and mountains captured in impressive panoramic shots, and come upon the folklore and myths of the Colombian Caribbean without clichés. And, first and foremost, with the unique sounds of the coastal culture, a cross of hypnotic drums and a sometimes melancholic, and other times possibly possessed, accordions.

Tras realizar numerosos cortometrajes premiados (Alma, de 2000; Intento, de 2001), escribió, produjo y dirigió su ópera prima La sombra del caminante (2004), seleccionada por más de 50 festivales internacionales, incluyendo el 20° Festival de Mar del Plata. Los viajes del viento es la primera película colombiana exhibida en Cannes en tres décadas. Born in Río de Oro, Colombia, in 1981, he studied Film and Television at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. After making several awarded short films (Alma, in 2000; Intento, in 2001), he wrote, produced and directed his feature film debut The Wandering Shadows (2004), selected by more than 50 international film festivals, including the 20th Mar del Plata Film Fest. The Wind Journeys is the first Colombian picture screened at Cannes in the last three decades.
Notas del director / Director’s notes Ésta es la historia de un viaje. Un viaje hacia el principio, hacia el espíritu, hacia nuestra alma. Hacia aquello que unió a nuestra raíz blanca, negra y nativa en algo único. Único como la música que de ahí surgió. Durante siglos nos hemos preguntado qué es lo que nos separa; ahora es tiempo de preguntar qué es lo que nos une. Eso que nos unirá a dos seres errantes, Ignacio y Fermín, vagabundos en busca de algo que necesitan pero desconocen. Que nos llevará junto a ellos a descubrir nuevos mundos, nuevas aventuras, nuevas almas. Y al final, el principio. Y otro viaje más. This is the story of a journey. A journey toward the beginning, toward the spirit. Toward our soul. Toward the one thing that merged our white, native and black root into something unique. Unique, like the music that was born. For centuries we’ve asked ourselves: What keeps us apart? Now it is time to ask what brings us together. Together with Ignacio and Fermín, two wanderers in search of something they need, but can’t understand. Together with them in the discovery of a new world, of new adventures, of a new soul. And at the end: the beginning. And another journey.
