Taking Woodstock No uno sino dos eventos históricos jalonaron la vida de Elliot Tiber: apenas dos meses después de poner el cuerpo en el estallido de Stonewall, este hijo de inmigrantes rusos devenía casi sin quererlo en figura instrumental para la consumación de aquellos “tres días de paz y música” de los que suele decirse que, si alguien los recuerda demasiado bien, seguramente no estuvo allí. Tomando como base la autobiografía de Tiber, Ang Lee se corre de la postal más espectacular del evento, esquivando sus míticos actos musicales –que ya han sido exhaustivamente documentados–, para encarar la épica íntima, subjetiva de un muchacho sacudido por la expansión del movimiento gay y el arco(iris) de descastados de los que se rodea, desde el ex marine y drag queen Vilma y un paranoico veterano de Vietnam, hasta la troupe avant-garde que monta una puesta nudista de Chéjov, y la encantadora pareja que invita a Tiber a bordo de su primer viaje ácido. Es precisamente en plena iniciación lisérgica que el protagonista tiene su epifanía, de cara a la imponente imagen de una ondulante marea compuesta de medio millón de humanidades. Optando siempre por apostarse en los márgenes en lugar del ojo del huracán, Taking Woodstock obtiene el retrato cercano de una generación transformada a puro LSD y flower power, sus sentidos y sentimientos liberados sin retorno.
Elliot Tiber’s life was marked by not only one, but two historic events: only two months after being present at the Stonewall Riots, this son of Russian immigrants became, almost without wanting to, a key figure in the consummation of those “three days of peace and music”, of which it is usually said that if you remember them well, you probably weren’t there. Based on Tiber´s autobiography, Ang Lee moves away from the most spectacular images of the event, dodging its mythical musical performances –which have already been fully documented–, to focus on the intimate and subjective journey of a young man shaken by the growing gay movement and the colorful group of figures around him, from the ex marine drag queen Vilma and a paranoid Vietnam veteran, to the avant-garde troupe that stages a nude performance of a play by Chéjov and the charming couple that invites Tiber on board their first acid trip. It is precisely during this lysergic initiation that Tiber has an epiphany, facing the extraordinary image of an undulating sea made up of half a million persons. Always positioned at the edges rather than at the center of the hurricane, Taking Woodstock is a close portrait of a generation transformed by pure LSD and flower power, its senses and feelings permanently liberated.

Ang Lee
Nació en 1954 en Taiwán. Uno de los directores más premiados de la actualidad, ganó dos Oscar, dos Leones de Oro y dos Osos de Oro, entre otros. Algunos de sus films son El banquete de bodas (1993), Sensatez y sentimientos (1995), El tigre y el dragón (2000) y Secreto en la montaña (2005). Taking Woodstock formó parte de la Selección Oficial de Cannes 2009. Born in 1954 in Taiwan. His films have received an impressive number of awards, including two Oscars, two Golden Lions and two Golden Bears. Some of his films are The Wedding Banquet (1993), Sense and Sensibility (1995), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) and Brokeback Mountain (2005). Taking Woodstock was part of the Cannes Official Selection 2009.
