Eden à l’ouest Eden Is West / El Edén en el Oeste Un pequeño barco atestado de personas que hablan un idioma extraño se acerca a la playa, de noche. De pronto, aparece una patrulla guardacostas; alguien salta al agua, decidido a no dejarse atrapar. La primera, tensa, hiperrealista secuencia de Eden à l’ouest parece anunciar una zambullida en el mar revuelto del “drama de la inmigración”. Pero Costa-Gavras, a sus 76, todavía tiene trucos por estrenar, y apenas Elías –el héroe de esta odisea filmada– descubra que naufragó en la playa nudista de un exclusivo centro turístico (ése y no otro es el Edén del título), toda sombra de gravedad se habrá disipado, para dar paso a la que tal vez sea la película más ligera del director. Que no se malentienda: claro que hay crítica social y dimensión política aquí, pero se desprenden graciosamente de una road movie –a pie y a dedo; en auto, tren y tractor– que satiriza a los habitantes, miedos y esperanzas de la Europa actual. De peripecia en peripecia, la epopeya agridulce de Elías avanza hasta la París que, tras un encuentro con el ilusionista actuado por Ulrich Tukur (a quien también puede verse en The White Ribbon), tiene reservado para él un final, si no feliz, por lo menos mágico.
A small boat crammed with people who speak a strange language approaches the beach, at night. Suddenly, a coastguard vessel appears; someone dives into the sea, determined not to get caught. The first sequence of Eden à l’ouest, tense and hyper-realistic, seems the prelude to a dive into the restless sea of “the drama of immigration”. But Costa-Gavras, at 76, still has some new tricks up his sleeve, and no sooner Elias –the hero of this filmed odyssey- discovers that he has reached the nudist beach of an exclusive tourist resort (none other than the Eden of the title), every trace of gravity dissipates, giving way to what is perhaps the filmmaker’s lightest film. But let there be no misunderstandings: of course there is social criticism and a political dimension in the film, but they appear humorously in this road movie –hitchhiking and walking; by car, train and tractor- which satirizes the habitants, fears and hopes of present-day Europe. After many adventures, Elias´ bittersweet odyssey finishes in Paris, where, after an encounter with an illusionist played by Ulrich Tukur (who can be also seen in The White Ribbon), he reaches a happy ending, or at least a magic one.

Costa-Gavras
Nacido en Arcadia, Grecia, en 1933, Konstantin Costa-Gavras estudió Letras en La Sorbona y cine en el IDHEC. Naturalizado francés, entre 1982 y 1987 fue presidente de la Cinématèque, cargo que reasumió en el 2007. Su nombre se convirtió en sinónimo de thriller político con films como Z (1969; Oscar a Mejor Película Extranjera), Estado de sitio (1972) y Desaparecido (1982; Palma de Oro en Cannes). Sus últimos trabajos fueron Amen (2002) y Le Couperet (2005). Born in Arcadie, Greece, in 1933, Konstantin Costa-Gavras studied Letters at the Sorbonne and Film at the IDHEC. Naturalized French citizen, from 1982 to 1987 he served as the President of La Cinémathèque, a title he reassumed in 2007. His name became a synonym for political thriller with such films as Z (1969; Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film), État de siège (1972) and Missing (1982; Golden Palm at Cannes). His latest work includes Amen (2002) and The Ax (2005).
