APPLEBY COLLEGE CELEBRATES 100 YEARS OF EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE Student s Circa 1914

FASCINATING MINDS SINCE 1911 , OAKVILLE’S APPLEBY COLLEGE HAS ESTABLISHED A GLOBAL REPUTATION AS AN INNOVATIVE LEADER IN THE DE VE LOPME NT OF TE ACHING AND LEARNING METHODOLOGIES. Founded by John S. H. Guest, Appleby opened its doors on September 14, 1911. That day, the school welcomed its first students: 29 boys who arrived as far away as Chicago and Winnipeg. “What started as an all-boys school in one building on 32 acres of land is today a 725-student strong community on a 60-acre campus, welcoming young men and women from more than 30 countries around the world,” said Guy McLean, Principal, Appleby College.

Rich in history with an impressive legacy, Appleby has achieved a number of significant milestones and developments which have propelled the day and boarding school continuously forward in the area of academics, arts, athletics and service. A pioneer in the use of e-learning, integrating technology into all facets of its curriculum, Appleby’s use of laptops in the classroom, SMART Boards and Harkness tables is a model for best practices. Its curriculum also incorporates innovative teaching and learning methods, including a unique experiential component consisting of a Grade 12 boarding requirement for day students. The experience provides an opportunity for international and local students to gain a greater appreciation of different cultures and perspectives, while at the same time, learn more about themselves as they grow together in a community and develop the responsibility and skills to assist with transitioning from high school to university. In fact, supported by an extensive guidance program, more than 90 percent of Appleby graduates advance to their first university of choice. “We are extremely proud of our past,” added McLean. “We’re also looking forward to the school’s next century and the tremendous impact Appleby students will have locally, nationally and internationally.”

Throughout the 2011-2012 school year, Appleby will be celebrating its milestone anniversary in several ways, including a Centennial Speakers Series showcasing some of the Canada’s most respected and influential individuals.
