NEWS Dear Reader:

E

conomically, Ireland is turning in a positive direction.

Despite some lingering difficulties, economists are predicting a reversal of fortunes and an improvement in trade across the board. With a number of major civil works in progress and money set aside for road improvements, the outlook is better than it has been for some time. In house building, there is evidence of growth, helped by plans that will encourage homeowners to invest in their properties. In agriculture, farmers too are looking forward to even better times ahead while numerous other pointers suggest that the corner has been turned.

At McHale Plant Sales, we view these changes with optimism. Over the past year and more, we have honed our operations in readiness for the better times that lie ahead. Today, our business model is structured around two key operating divisions: construction – where Komatsu products remain the backbone of our business, and agricultural machinery - a unit in which the names Zetor and McHale Plant Sales are becoming even more synonymous. Spanning both sectors is the work we do as distributors of Merlo telehandlers. Within these two divisions – construction and agriculture – other units operate whose work is vital to the overall success of our business. Principal amongst these is our successful used machinery sales unit – a stand-alone enterprise that has given a global dimension to our operations.

Another important facet of our operations is the work our skilled technicians do – first, in providing technical support to customers, and second, in carrying out the complex engineering and refurbishment work required to convert machinery back to ‘almost-good-as-new’ condition so as to extend its useful life.

Our confidence that the year ahead will be a better one for all remains intact. Our targets will be to expand sales. Of all our products and through growth, to expand our workforce in all key areas.

Merlo leads the way in innovation with the Worlds First Hybrid Telescopic Handler

T

he Merlo Telescopic handler P40.7 has been awarded the Gold medal for Innovation at Europe's biggest agricultural show, held in Hannover last November. Out of the 400 innovative products which entered, Merlo's P40.7 Hybrid has been awarded the Agritechnica GOLD medal for innovation. Merlo is the leader in innovation, having won a GOLD medal in 2001 for the Multifarmer concept which interprets the evolution of modern agriculture. The award winning machine was exhibited at Agritechnica in November and is designed based on leading innovation and holds numerous patented hybrid technologies, allowing the machine to

operate with a diesel electro-hydraulic hybrid system. Technology means the Hybrid machine doesn't require the installation of a urea system, which means the machine can run in full electric mode for indoor operations. The 4 tonne lift capacity, 7 metre reach Hybrid boasts 30% less fuel consumption compared to a conventional Merlo machine, significantly reduced noise emissions and will benefit from a newly designed cab for first class operator comfort. Of course the Hybrid version also benefits from Merlo's all round visibility, maximum safety, ultimate control and outstanding performance.

Galway Contractor Beckett Agri Adds Merlo Multifarmer To Their Extensive Fleet

A

rguably, one of the most unique items of farm machinery to go on sale here is the Merlo MF30.9 MultiFarmer, the first of which has been purchased from distributor McHale Plant Sales by Galway-based contractor Beckett Agri. Supplied to them by McHale Plant Sales through recently-appointed Merlo main dealer Murphy’s Garage, Headford, the MultiFarmer has been described as ‘a true revolution in farm handling’. Unique for the fact that it has all of the front-end features of a telescopic handler combined with all of the rear-end features and fittings of a tractor, it is the first farm handler equipped with telescopic boom, rear three-point linkage and a high power mechanical PTO. Delivering the much greater materials handling and loading productivity of a handler combined with a tractor-like capability for towing and operating trailed implements, the Merlo MultiFarmer is a machine that appeals to farmers and contractors alike. For them, the benefits of having an all-inone machine that expands the capabilities of the conventional farm tractor add to its usefulness in large-scale farming scenarios. Amongst the first to embrace these benefits is

page 8

Galway-based contractors Beckett Agri. Based in Kilconnell, nine miles west of Ballinasloe, the business was founded by William Beckett who continues to play an active role in its operations. Today, the firm is one of the country’s leading agricultural contractors whose area of operations extends from Moycullen, west of Galway, to a point east of Ballinasloe and into part of Roscommon. Heavily involved in silage harvesting, the firm has the capacity to operate three separate silage outfits at any one time. Working round the clock between May and the end of August, the business utilises a fleet of fourteen tractors, four self-loading wagons, one harvester, numerous mowers, two loading shovels including a Komatsu WA320 and two balers. Outside the silage season, Beckett Agri utilises three gritters in lime and fertilizer spreading plus ancillary units required for slurry and manure spreading. In addition, the firm undertakes some small-scale ploughing and tilling, as well as servicing the needs of their own 150 acre farm. Away from agriculture, they also maintain three Komatsu tracked excavators which they use as subcontractors on road construction, pipe laying and similar civil works projects.

McHALE PLANT SALES NEWS Issue 8 Spring 2014

Their investment in the Merlo MultiFarmer – the second Merlo unit purchased by them - is one that William Beckett believe will repay them through increased productivity. “With the capacity to function as a telehandler and tractor all in one, we see it delivering a significant return in terms of extra efficiency and greater throughput thereby reducing the amount of time we need to complete our work. For any contractor working against the weather, this is an important consideration” he said.

includes Komatsu, Zetor and Unia, SIP and Agrostroj attachments. Speaking to Farm & Plant, their managing director, Michael McHale expressed delight at Beckett Agri’s decision to add the MultiFarmer to their fleet. “Their confidence in the quality and reliability of Merlo, based on experience with their previous Merlo machine, provides an ideal proving ground on which to demonstrate the MultiFarmer’s versatility” he said.

Since their appointment as Merlo distributors, the brand has become an increasingly important element within the McHale Plant Sales’ expanding portfolio of agricultural products – a range that

New ‘Greener’ Komatsu Hybrid Excavator Points to New Direction

K

omatsu has once again demonstrated its capacity for innovation with the introduction of a new excavator that they say has stolen a march on its rivals in terms of its environmental features. Though still dressed in Komatsu’s familiar yellow and black livery, its credentials are such as to underline its claim to be the ‘greenest’ machine of its kind. Carrying the model designation HB215LC-1, the new Komatsu Hybrid is quieter, more economical and more CO2 friendly than anything the Japanese manufacturer has offered before. Being marketed here by their distributor in Ireland, McHale Plant Sales, it ticks all of the major environmental boxes that one could expect from a machine of its size. Designed to operate in sensitive environmental applications, it is quieter to operate and emits less noise than conventional excavators. This makes it ideally suited for work in urban surroundings where its reduced noise levels make it less intrusive on the

page 10

resident population. These same lower noise levels also make it especially suited for work in confined spaces or city streets and for handling sensitive environmental projects such as river and canal dredging. The only excavator of its kind, its other beneficial features are better fuel economy and a lower carbon footprint. Typical of the savings promised is an average 25 percent reduction in fuel consumption. This is matched to a corresponding reduction in CO2 emissions. Diesel powered, the HB215LC-1 has an electric motor that captures the surplus energy generated during each swing operation. This extra energy is converted into power that is then stored and used to boost engine performance when extra acceleration is needed. An eco-gauge provides information to the operator that will help monitor fuel consumption and energy flow at any time.

McHALE PLANT SALES NEWS Issue 8 Spring 2014

Describing the new Komatsu HB215LC-1 as ‘a heavyweight excavator with a lightweight environment impact’ McHale Plant Sales managing director Michael McHale said ‘with government, local authorities and various offices of state pledged to reduce pollution of all kinds and make Ireland an even ‘greener’ place, it’s a machine that points the new direction our industry is likely to take in the future.’ Closer to home, the green revolution is well underway here in the construction and civil engineering sectors with the sale by McHale Plant Sales of four new Komatsu HB215LC hybrid excavators – first of the revolutionary new machines to be sold in Ireland. Two were purchased by one of the country's leading civil engineering contractors, Galway firm, Priority Construction to be used at the Lisheen mine near Thurles where the company has been contracted to manage the tailings pond.

Third of the new hybrids was purchased by Sligobased contractors Carthy Construction of Ballisodare who required a quieter excavator to work in confined urban environments. The fourth hybrid was added to Cork-based golf course construction company, Sol Golf's large fleet of existing Komatsu machines, where it is to be put to work in the construction of new and modification of existing golf courses throughout Europe.

Komatsu Hybrid System In Komatsu’s unique hybrid system, the electric swing motor/ generator captures and regenerates energy as the upper structure slows down and converts it into electric energy. The regenerated energy is stored in the ultra-capacitor and used by the generator/ motor to assist the engine when it needs to accelerate. Thus, the hybrid system reduces fuel consumption significantly.

HYBRID OPERATION MONITOR The operator can check recent fuel consumption rates and the energy flow among engine and hybrid components on the machine monitor at any time.

RELIABLE AND DURABLE HYBRID SYSTEM COMPONENTS In addition to the engine, hydraulic components, main valve and electronic components that control them, the hybrid system components such as the generator/ motor, swing electric motor/generator, inverter and capacitor are also developed and manufactured by Komatsu. They are neatly arranged on the machine. Controlling the inverter enables the optimum operation of the generator/motor, electric swing motor/ generator and engine according to the work at hand, allowing the machine to demonstrate its potential fully while reducing fuel consumption significantly.

ELECTRIC SWING MOTOR An electric swing motor is used in place of the usual hydraulic swing motor and is designed to recover energy during swing braking. Energy is sent to the ultra-capacitor for storage.

ULTRA-CAPACITOR ASSEMBLY The ultra-capacitor assembly includes an inverter that switches the AC electricity from the generator motor and swing motor into DC electricity for storage in the capacitor. Since capacitors require migration of electrons and ions for charging and discharging, they can transfer power much faster than batteries, which use chemical reactions to produce electricity.

GENERATOR MOTOR The generator motor is positioned between the engine and hydraulic pumps. The generator produces electric power to charge the capacitor as needed. The generator motor uses electricity from the capacitor to provide power up engine assistance to the engine.

Komatsu Hybrid Gets Tax Advantage

K

omatsu’s new HB215LC-1 Hybrid excavator - of which four units have already been sold in Ireland - has been included on the Triple E list of energyefficient equipment maintained by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) on which customers can claim accelerated capital tax allowances. Under the scheme, which runs until 31 December 2014, the entire allowance in respect of approved energy-efficient equipment can be claimed in the first year. This contrasts with the situation applying to conventional equipment whereby capital allowances for wear and tear are spread out over an eight-year period.

As an eligible product which is included on the Triple E register, Komatsu HB215LC-1 hybrid owners can claim relief on their corporation tax return along with any other wear and tear allowances without the need to obtain approval for expenditure on energy-efficient equipment. While advising customers to seek independent taxation advice, Liam Foley, Finance Director with Komatsu distributor McHale Plant Sales of Birdhill said that further information can be obtained by viewing the approved listing of Electric and Alternative Fuel Vehicles on the SEAI website http:// triplee.seai.ie/AcaProducts/Search.aspx and by checking the Accelerated Capital Allowances section on the Revenue website http://www.Revenue.ie

Banks Mining Invests in Six Komatsu HD785 Rigid Dump Trucks By Mr. Ed Prosser, Marubeni-Komatsu Ltd A Successful Komatsu Customer The Banks Group was founded in 1976 in County Durham in North East England. Since December2008, they are a major customer of Marubeni-Komatsu Ltd (MKL), the official Komatsu Europe distributor for the UK. With offices in Durham, Hamilton and Chesterfield, the Banks Group employs approximately 370 people in surface mining, renewable energy, property development and energy from waste. Banks Mining develops and operates surface mines throughout England and Scotland, and has developed, operated and restored over 100 since1976. They currently operate England’s two largest surface coal mines in Northumberland. Banks’ “development with care” approach ensures that extensive environmental assessments are made on all job sites and that development is done in close consultation with the community. The company is committed to mining coal in the most safe, responsible and efficient way possible, thereby helping to ensure that ever growing energy needs are met. Significant Deal for Equipment and Support In August 2010, Banks Mining and MKL concluded a deal for six new Komatsu HD785 rigid dump trucks, along with a six-year support package. The initial three HD785 trucks, the first to be supplied to Banks Mining,

page 16

were sent to work at the Berkley surface coal mine near Dinnington in North East England in October 2010. Operations at the Berkley mine started earlier in 2010. Approximately 2.4 million tonnes (2.6 million tons) of coal and 200,000 tonnes (220,460 tons) of fireclay will be removed from the mine over a period of 11.5 years. This development scheme provides continued employment for 60 site personnel and assists in maintaining some 120 service and support personnel located at the Banks Mining headquarters in the North East. Commenting on this deal with Komatsu and MKL, Mr. Harry Banks OBE, chairman and chief executive of the Banks Group, said: “We were very impressed with the enthusiasm and belief Komatsu and their distributors have in both their truck and product support. They had the confidence to

McHALE PLANT SALES NEWS Issue 8 Spring 2014 demonstrate their HD785 for us and it performed excellently. It has proved to be quick, productive and fuel efficient and—importantly for us—it’s a very quiet machine. Komatsu trucks are a great addition to our fleet.” We are confident our new Tough Rigid Dump Truck The HD785 has a powerful Komatsu SAA12V140E-3 engine that delivers 895 kW (1,200 HP) at 1,900 rpm. To optimize performance and fuel consumption, the engine is fitted with available horsepower control (VHPC). This system sets the maximum engine power to one of four levels to match the job being carried out and the working conditions. Consequently, the HD785 delivers excellent climbing ability when required and can reduce fuel consumption. The transmission includes Komatsu’s electronically controlled clutch modulation system, K-ATOMiCS, which controls both the engine and transmission to optimize clutch engagement. Combined with a “skipshift” function that automatically matches the travel speed to the incline, this system ensures smooth gear shifting and responsive acceleration.

KOMTRAX with a “PLUS” Another key feature that will ensure the new Komatsu trucks are kept in optimum shape is KOMTRAX Plus (health monitoring system for large mining equipment) fitted with an Orbcomm controller. This satellite-based diagnostic system removes the need for an engineer to visit the machine to manually download data. The Orbcomm controller transfers the data via satellite to a website accessible by both MKL and Banks Mining. The data is updated after every 20 hours of operation and provides detailed operational, statistical and trend data. MKL and Komatsu Europe International N.V. (KEISA) organize periodical service meetings with the customer and Komatsu’s service section also follows up the Banks Mining fleet and provides weekly reports to KEISA. Current Success Opens Up New Opportunities Banks Mining’s success with Komatsu’s HD785 has sparked the interest of other companies and promoted the good reputation—and the sales—of Komatsu’s rigid dump truck in this sector.

“Grade A” Komatsu Support and Service Komatsu is renowned around the world for top quality support and service that guarantees complete peace of mind—and productive machines—to their customers. Banks Mining can rely on the highly qualified and experienced Komatsu technicians at MKL who bring their expert knowledge of Komatsu equipment to service the machines quickly and professionally and to keep them where they belong: working on the job site.

New Komatsu WA-380-7 Loader launched Coinciding with what the industry hopes will be a better year in 2014 as promised new infrastructural projects edge towards the starting line is the arrival here of the new 191 hp Komatsu WA380-7 wheel loader which is being introduced to the market by their distributor in Ireland, McHale Plant Sales.

Standard on the WA380-7 is a large-capacity torque converter with a lock-up function as standard. This provides improved acceleration and hill climb capability and a higher top speed. Operative in 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears, the lock-up function works to deliver a ground speed up to 40 km/h.

Weighing in at 17,910 kg, the highly versatile WA3807 is powered by a punch-packing 191hp Komatsu S3B engine that is EU Stage lllB/EPA Tier 4 emissions certified and uses up to 10 percent less fuel than the model it replaces.

Delivering greater productivity in V-cycle applications, its better acceleration and hill climbing ability also allows the WA380-7 to up-shift gears faster to achieve higher gear ranges and maintain higher ground speeds when working in load-and-carry applications.

Key stats show the WA380-7 to have an operating weight of 17,910kg with a full turn static tipping load of 12,890kg. Hinge pin height is set at 4,095mm with a dumping clearance of 2,915mm when working with a 3.2 cubic meter bucket with teeth.

Another interesting feature is what Komatsu calls a Smart Loader logic function. This works automatically to provide optimal engine torque that reduces automatically to save fuel when the loader is in ‘at ease’ mode, such as when driving with an empty bucket. A hydraulically-actuated variable geometry turbocharger and exhaust gas recirculation valve gives better precision and air management and longer component life.

Praised by McHale managing director Michael McHale for its ‘advanced engineering’, the WA380-7 comes with a control system that manage air flow rate, fuel injection, combustion parameters and after-treatment functions that work together to optimise performance, cut fuel use, reduce emissions and provide advanced diagnostic capability. the tailings pond.

One such company is Aughinish Alumina, a huge employer whose plant at Askeaton is considered to be Ireland’s largest industrial site. Its Irish facility in Limerick is the largest alumina refinery in Europe with the capacity to produce up to two million tons of alumina a year.

Both supplied to them by Komatsu distributor McHale Plant Sales, the collective impact that the two new machines will have will be seen in their extra versatility, added efficiency, improved handling and greater productivity.

In a plant of this size, numerous applications exist for which the machinery produced by Komatsu is the best solution. Amongst these, few applications could be more important than the management of the plant’s tailings pond – a process to which Aughinish Alumina attaches prime importance.

As McHale Plant Sales managing director Michael McHale commented ‘Aughinish Alumina is a very valued client whose special requirements have been met by Komatsu in machines that are ideally configured for the applications in which they are being used.'

In order to ensure that the very highest standards are observed, Aughinish Alumina recently took the decision to augment its earth moving fleet at Askeaton. This led to their purchase of two new Komatsu machines, both of which are being employed in the management of

page 20

First of the new machines was a Komatsu PC 210LC-8 crawler excavator which was supplied fitted with a super length, long reach bucket arm. Second of the new machines purchased by Aughinish Alumina was a mid-range D61-23 dozer.

Proud recipients of the 2013 Green Award, Munster Joinery is fully aware of its environmental responsibilities – a fact evident from the level of investment it makes in purchasing equipment, in implementing processes and in adopting innovative techniques that will enable it to grow its business in a sustainable manner. As anyone who has ever visited a carpenter’s workshop would know, theirs is a business that has the capacity to

page 22

generate waste on an industrial scale in the form of sawdust and timber off cuts. To use this material in a sustainable, energy efficient way, the company uses it to feed a thermal heat generating plant that delivers heating throughout their facility thereby reducing their carbon footprint and energy costs. Feeding this energy saving operation are two Komatsu machines one of which is a PC138US-10 crawler excavator appropriately fitted with a grab handle for picking and depositing the sawdust and timber off cuts. Working in tandem with it is a second Komatsu - a WA200-6 wheel loader which has also been assigned to manage waste timber handling requirements. Commenting, McHale Plant Sales director Tim Shanahan said ‘as a machinery manufacturer whose environmental credentials have also been independently recognised, Komatsu is delighted to be part of the Munster Joinery success story.’

Komatsu What You Gain On The Swings You Save On The Roundabouts

I

t isn’t for nothing that Komatsu is on the top rung of Ireland’s excavator and heavy construction plant sales ladder.

For years, customers have been attracted to the quality that is an in-built attribute of every Komatsu machine. This quality is reflected in Japanese design and engineering, in Komatsu’s advanced technology and robust reliability, and in the broad spectrum features that have made Komatsu machines a top choice amongst owners and operators alike. Okay...so sometimes Komatsu will appear a little more expensive than other machines. But, as every Komatsu owner knows, initial cost should never be the only measure, especially when one is being contracted to deliver multi-million euro projects. Buying Komatsu, what you gain on the swings you also save on the roundabouts. Komatsu advantages can be seen in numerous ways – reliability and efficiency being just two. Factor in state-of-the-art technology and other high-tech advances and the picture builds. Add in driver comfort, ease-of-operation, better command and control, durability, easier servicing, long-lasting performance and less down time and the advantages you get by buying Komatsu become even more evident. The Komatsu message comes with this advice: Buy quality and be confident of completing contracts on time and to specification – a consideration that every canny contractor knows will reduce the risk of costly over-runs and burdensome penalties. In the new diesel-powered Komatsu Hybrid, four units of which have been purchased here, environmental factors were to the fore in the development of what is a thoroughly eco-friendly, green machine. Quieter than conventional excavators, it has an electric motor that captures surplus energy and stores it to boost engine performance when extra acceleration is needed. Extra benefits include reduced

page 26

CO2 emissions and twenty-five percent lower fuel use – a particularly tangible benefit that promises to deliver large-scale savings over the life of the machine. And it isn’t just on-site that Komatsu quality is evident. Through McHale Plant Sales, Komatsu owners have access to the backup and support of experts in every area. With Komatsu Maintenance Plus, customers enjoy full parts and labour warranty plus a 10 percent discount on routine service parts. Designed to protect resale value and reduce the cost of machinery ownership, Komatsu Maintenance Plus provides cover for up to 10,000 hours of operation. In that way, owners are helped in keeping costs in check with benefits that include call-out, on-site service and maintenance, when and where required and without travel or mileage charges. Helping customers to commit to regular machine servicing, a gold card scheme offers agreed fixed price servicing based on special labour rates plus a six-month guarantee on all genuine Komatsu parts used and access to satellite machine monitoring via Komatsu’s own Komtrax system. Help in securing purchase financing and advice on the best machine to choose for each application are amongst the additional benefits that owners can expect from Komatsu and McHale Plant Sales.

New

PC210LC-10 Hydraulic Excavator Komatsu introduced the PC210LC-10 hydraulic excavator. With a net horsepower of 158 hp (118 kW), the PC210LC-10 is powered by a Komatsu SAA6D107E-2 engine and is EU Stage 3B emissions certified. Built upon a proven Stage 3A engine platform, Komatsu has leveraged its leadership in technology and innovation to design a more environmentally-friendly engine that increases power while decreasing fuel consumption. With an operating weight of 23,603 kg, the PC210LC-10 features improved hydraulic efficiency, improved operator comfort, simplified maintenance to extend component life, and two counterweight options that maintain the lift capacity and stability of the previous model while also providing transportation flexibility. The PC210LC-10 is equipped with the latest KOMTRAX® technology, which sends machine operating information to a secure website utilizing wireless technology. Data such as operating hours, machine location, maintenance notifications, out of area notifications, machine utilization and residual fuel levels are relayed to the web application for analysis. The KOMTRAX® fleet monitoring system monitors machine availability, reduces the risk of machine theft, allows for remote diagnosis by the distributor, and provides a wealth of other information to drive business efficiency. Special features of the new PC210LC-10 include: • EPA Tier 4 Interim and EU Stage 3B Emissions Certified Engine Built upon Komatsu’s proven EPA Tier 3 technology, the SAA6D107E-2 engine provides increased horsepower while lowering fuel consumption. The Komatsu Tier 4 Interim engine uses an advanced electronic control system to manage airflow rate, fuel injection, combustion parameters, and aftertreatment functions to optimize engine performance, reduce emissions, and provide diagnostic capability. As a leader in hydraulic technology, Komatsu has developed a hydraulically actuated Komatsu Variable Geometry Turbocharger (KVGT) and Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve, resulting in better precision and air management as well as longer component life. The Komatsu Diesel Particulate Filter (KDPF) has an integrated design that does not interfere with daily operation yet keeps the operator aware of its status. • Two Counterweight Options and Improved Performance The PC210LC-10 standard counterweight maintains the lifting performance of the PC200LC-8 and provides excellent lateral stability in applications that require heavy lifting or multiple attachments. An optional lighter counterweight provides transportation flexibility while minimizing performance impacts. The robust undercarriage design features new final drives that provide up to 13% more drawbar pull than the PC210LC-8, improving travel performance and manoeuvrability.

• Highly Efficient Hydraulic System All major components on the new PC210LC-10 including the engine, hydraulic pumps, motors and valves are exclusively designed and manufactured by Komatsu. This integrated design uses a closed centre load sensing hydraulic system that takes hydraulic efficiency to the next level, utilizing both variable speed matching and low speed matching technology. Variable speed matching allows the engine speed to adjust based on the hydraulic pump output for both light and heavy-duty applications, while low speed matching utilizes larger pumps capable of producing higher pump output at lower engine speeds. • Enhanced Operator Environment The new cab provides a comfortable and quiet work environment so operators can maximize productivity. The ROPS certified cab is specifically designed for hydraulic excavators and gains strength from a reinforced pipestructured framework. The cab is mounted on viscous damper mounts, which provide low vibration levels. The high-back, fully adjustable seat uses air suspension and is heated for improved comfort. An auxiliary input has been added to connect an MP3 player or other device that uses a standard auxiliary plug, along with two 12-volt ports that have also been incorporated into the cab. A new high resolution LCD monitor features enhanced capabilities and displays information in 25 languages for global support. The operator can easily select up to five working modes of operation to match machine performance to the application. These working modes include Power Mode, Economy Mode, Heavy Lift Mode, Breaker Mode, and Attachment Mode. Komatsu Launches New D61-23 Crawler Dozer Equipped With Factory-Fitted Intelligent Machine Control System Following the recent introduction of their D37-23 model just months ago, Komatsu has launched a new mediumsized D61EXi/PXi-23 crawler dozer factory-fitted with an innovative machine control system that works equally effectively in rough and fine dozing applications. The system is one that Komatsu claims will enhance productivity, reduce costs and improve job site safety. It was first shown to the public in Munich last April. Unlike conventional add-on control mechanisms, the new Komatsu system allows the dozer to perform rough dozing and finish grading functions, all in automatic mode, through the use of a durable off-blade sensor package. Marketed here by their distributors in Ireland, McHale Plant Sales, the D61EXi/PXi-23 is the first Komatsu dozer to come with a factory-fitted intelligent control system that gives fully automatic blade control and blade load control, whether doing rough dozing or finished grading, to deliver an outstanding improvement in productivity. During rough dozing, the system monitors blade load and adjusts blade elevation accordingly with the result that track slip is kept to a minimum in order to deliver more highly efficient dozing. As work progresses closer to the target finish grade, the system adjusts the machine accordingly to provide finish grade performance with high-level precision – an outcome that Komatsu claims, will deliver a 13% increase in efficiency. Factory-installed while the machine is being assembled, the D61-23 system includes an improved cab-top Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver, control box and antenna and an enhanced Inertial Measuring Unit (IMU+) with stroke sensing hydraulic cylinders. Robust and accurate, the integrated sensor package eliminates the daily hassle that is part and parcel of having to install and remove conventional GNSS antennae and cables from the blade, not to mention the wear associated with it. For reasons of safety and efficiency, the antenna, mast pole and cables are now fully integrated in the machine. Positioned on top of the cab, the antenna provides accurate data collection, regardless of the actual blade position. In operation, the system works by tailoring the machine’s responses to actual operations – constantly adjusting blade load settings to match actual work conditions. As it moves around the site, accurate surface data is collected by measuring elevations while the stroke-sensing cylinder measures the actual angle of the blade for high precision

page 28

grading accuracy. From pass to pass, blade control can be left engaged to automate the precise lifting and lowering of the blade at the finish and beginning of each pass. Using TOPCON’s advanced construction management system, Sitelink3D, dozing progress can be communicated to the site office. From there, updated design data can be sent back to the dozer, quickly and efficiently without the need to dispatch personnel. Other Komatsu features present in the D61-23 are longer track-on-ground (EX) and low ground pressure (PX) models that offer customers flotation and weight distribution options to best match applications. Operating weights range from 17740 kg to 18660 kg, depending on the configuration, with a net power output on tap of 125 kW / 168HP at 2200 rpm. For the first three years or 2,000 hours, the D37-23 will be supported by Komatsu’s CARE maintenance program. Part of the package also is Komatsu’s own KOMTRAX technology that uses wireless technology that monitors the machine remotely, protects against theft, records operating hours, fuel consumption and provides maintenance alerts. Commenting, Sales Director at McHale Plant Sales, John O’Brien said “we regard this new model as an attractive proposition that links proven performance with leading edge technology in a way that delivers a more efficient and economical dozing solution".

Roadbridge takes delivery of 8 new model HM400-3 dump trucks

R

oadbridge have taken delivery of some of the first HM400-3 trucks to be delivered in Europe for the improvement of the A477 between St Clears and Red Roses in South Wales. The A477 from St Clears all the way to Pembroke Dock is one of the main links from the M4 motorway into Pembrokeshire. It forms an important part of the Welsh Government’s strategic road network. This 9.3km scheme will bypass the villages of Llanddowror and Red Roses, cross the River Hydfron and pass through several environmentally sensitive areas including the Taf Valley. It will greatly improve the alignment of the road, raise safety standards and improve journey times and journey time reliability. The existing A477 trunk road from St Clears to just west of Red Roses follows a sub-standard alignment for most of its length. Very few overtaking opportunities exist and the horizontal and vertical alignment, forward visibility, junction standards and the general carriageway and verge widths are well below current design standards. There are only limited pedestrian facilities in both Llanddowror and Red Roses. Opportunities for improvements in the villages are restricted by the close proximity of properties to the carriageway edge. The length of the road between the villages follows a tortuous alignment through a wooded valley and the relatively steep gradient along this length, added to the sub-standard alignment, results in delays and frustration for road users. There have been numerous accidents along this length of trunk road in recent years.

McHALE PLANT SALES NEWS Issue 8 Spring 2014

Zetor Forterra HSX – a smart choice for everyone Traditional Czech agricultural technology manufacturer Zetor expanded upwards its line of time-tested tractors last year. The new Forterra HSX offers many technological innovations that ensure higher performance, comfort and improved safety. In conjunction with its new generation fourcyclinder turbocharged motor, one of the main innovative features of this model is its HSX reverse gear, which makes tractor control much easier. The new five-gear synchronized gearbox enables speeds of 30 forward + 30 reverse gears, along with a three-stage automatic torque multiplier with pressure increased to 19 bar. The engine has high torque backup (34%), easier starting, excellent durability and low fuel consumption. The tractor‘s high performance is guaranteed not only by the four valves per cylinder heads, but also by enhanced hydraulic valves and the new fuel injection system. The engine is also equipped with a solid particle filter to lower emissions. The new electro-hydraulic power shuttle provides greater ease for loader work. Shifting of the PTO drive shaft is also hydraulically controlled. Two external auxiliary hydraulic cylinders ensure uniform load distribution on the tractor and a lifting force up to 7,000 kg. The reliability of the hydraulic system is secured by a moderated pressure filter. The longer wheelbase - 2,490 mm – on the Forterra HSX offer greater stability. HitchTronic – revolutionary innovation for all types of terrain Another innovation is the revolutionary automatic HitchTronic rear three-point suspension control, which allows the tractor to adapt to any terrain as it ploughs. Whether a beginner or an experienced driver, work will be much easier and more efficient. The quality of soil or the type of equipment doesn’t matter. Moreover, using HitchTronic saves fuel, thus helping to protect the environment. The HitchTronic system was launched on the market in 2011 to wide accolades from the farming industry. This recognition was formalised at Agrotech 2012, the international exhibition in Poland, where Zetor’s HitchTronic was awarded a gold medal for this innovation. Safe, comfortable and compatible The instrument panel comes equipped with an LCD display that shows information for operation and servicing in a more user-friendly and clearly structured format. In the driver’s seat there is a safety switch which prevents the engine from starting or the tractor from moving unless the driver is seated. The cabin is mounted on silent blocks and uses a combination of flooring materials which greatly reduce noise and vibrations in the (driver’s) cabin.

page 32

Zetor tractors reputation is of being robust, necessitating minimal maintenance and offering low operating costs. The same applies to the new model Forterra HSX, which can also use biofuel and bio-oil. The remarkable performance of this model will enable farmers to utilise larger capacity equipment; it may also be aggregated with various combinations of agricultural equipment. Consequently, the number of field crossings is decreased, which - along with the low-profile tyres that may also be used for this model – helps reduce soil compaction. The tractor is compatible with agricultural attachments of domestic and foreign origin or special aggregations in forestry or construction. The Zetor Forterra HSX was introduced to the public at the TechAgro 2012 trade fair. Production commenced in July 2012. The first HSX tractor was sold into the irish market in the autumn of last year. McHALE PLANT SALES NEWS Issue 8 Spring 2014

NEW ZETOR MAJOR ARRIVES In terms of specifications, it has a fully-synchronised, four-stage, 12 + 12 gearbox with a three-stage reduction and reversing capability. Mechanically regulated hydraulics stand out in terms of lifting strength, high lifting force and smooth operation with a lock function that works when transporting attachments. Fitted with bi-sectional or single sectional switchgear, its standard offering includes a Dromone hitch and inclusive two-years warranty cover – with an option to buy extended warranty for an additional two years. A spacious and comfortable cabin comes with a roof window as standard. Ergonomically designed controls ensure ease of operation. According to customer needs, it can be retrofitted for air conditioning, radio and roof light installation.

Zetor has announced the arrival on the Irish market of their new entry-level Major tractor. Competing in a segment of the market that currently accounts for up to 15% of total tractor sales, the new four-wheel drive Major will sell at an introductory price which Zetor themselves describe as "highly competitive". Viewed as a few-frills, lower-tech, value for money tractor, the Major is aimed at owners of smaller, family-sized farms and those in the market for a second run-around tractor that will be less costly on the pocket and less technically challenging to operate and maintain. Powered by Zetor’s own tried and trusted, electronics-free, four-valve, 80hp engine, the Major is seen as an important and timely addition to the Zetor range whose appeal in recent years has been significantly enhanced by success of its more-powerful, moresophisticated Proxima, Forterra and Forterra HSX stablemates. Free of complex electronics and expensive high-tech gadgetry, the Major is a down-to-earth all-rounder that should appeal to farmers whose requirements are for a tractor that is free of complications, easy to operate and that stands out in terms of price and performance.

For many, the introduction of the new Major will rekindle memories of the first Major model introduced by Zetor in 1960. Renowned for its robust performance, early models were powered by three and four-valve engines in the 59-84 horsepower range and came in two and four-wheel drive options, with and without a safety cabin. Modified in 1992, it was then rebranded in 1997 under the name Super and continued to be sold in that guise until production ended in 2006. Welcomed by the Zetor dealer organisation, the new Major is expected to fuel an anticipated increase in sales in 2014. In this, it will be helped with the arrival later in the year of a 2-wheel drive version powered by the same 80hp engine. Other factors that will underpin this objective, according to Zetor Sales Ireland managing director, Michael McHale, will be design changes and other improvements planned across the wider Zetor range as represented by the Forterra and Proxima models. Specific to the Irish market also is a determination on the part of Zetor to protect Ireland’s position as one of their top-10 markets worldwide – a goal they plan to achieve through an even more competitive approach to pricing with reductions expected in some cases. Plans to achieve growth here are also reflected in a realignment of the Zetor dealer organisation which is currently taking effect with new dealer appointments being made in a number of locations, including some in which Zetor was not previously represented.

Komatsu Makes A Child’s Dream Come True

A

fleet of Komatsu excavators, all dancing in unison to the strains of a Strauss waltz and conducted by young Eoin Gavigan from Donegal, was the centerpiece of a Christmas broadcast of ‘Una’s Dream Ticket’ screened on RTE Two television over the holiday break. Filmed earlier in the year, the show gave a starring role to young Eoin who had written to the show asking if it could arrange for him to drive a giant excavator. After receiving delivery of his ‘golden’ invitation card, Eoin was whisked to the McHale Plant Sales headquarters in Birdhill where a guard of honour of Komatsu excavators formed an archway to welcome him to the plant.

page 34

After that, it was fun and enjoyment all the way. Being shown how to handle the controls of his Komatsu like a true expert, Eoin experienced what it is like to be a real road builder as through the magic of studio editing, he appeared to swing his machine from side to side, digging and filling-in a deep trench. Afterwards, in studio, the smile on Eoin’s face said it all as hostess Una Foden of pop group ‘The Saturdays’ presented him with a workman’s tool belt, his own personalised hard hat and a unique ‘Una’s Dream Ticket’ lapel badge.

Komatsu and McHale Make A Child’s Dream Come True

T

hanks to an enquiry received from the RTE Television programme ‘Una’s Dream Factory’, Komatsu and McHale Plant Sales recently made a dream come true for lucky young 7-year old Eoin Garrivan from Letterkenny.
