AFM brieFs Nas shakes to Dust Continental Media’s AFM documentary Shake The Dust received a boost with news that hip-hop star Nas has come on as executive producer and will provide original music. Adam Sjoberg directs the film about rap fans from Colombia, Cambodia, Uganda and Yemen who use music for social empowerment.

Raven swoops on People Toronto’s Raven Banner has acquired worldwide rights to Doghouse Pictures’ home-invasion thriller Beautiful People and is talking up the project at AFM.

Sierra/Affinity takes on pair from FFI’s slate By JEREMy KAy

Sierra/Affinity has come on to handle international sales on two titles from Focus Features International’s slate, Somnia and Oculus, in the wake of the announcement that FFI will close. Kate Bosworth and Thomas Jane have joined the cast of horrorthriller Somnia, which Oculus

director Mike Flanagan will direct from a screenplay he wrote with Jeff Howard. Production is scheduled to begin on November 11. Demarest Films and MICA Entertainment are financing, with Intrepid Pictures’ Trevor Macy and Demarest’s Sam Englebardt and William D Johnson serving as producers.

Mali Elfman and D Scott Lumpkin will serve as executive producers. Supernatural thriller Oculus premiered at Toronto in September where Relativity acquired US rights for a 2014 release. Macy and Marc D Evans produced and Intrepid Pictures co-financed with MICA Entertainment.

VSC moves on Cheerleaders

Tribeca Film gets Starred Tribeca Film has taken North American rights to prison drama Starred Up. Independent is handling international sales.

Video Services Corp (VSC) will release recent Toronto Midnight Madness premiere All Cheerleaders Die next spring in Canada through its output deal with Modern Distributors. Myriad heads to Frontera Myriad Pictures is to handle international sales on Ocean Blue Entertainment’s Frontera starring Ed Harris and Eva Longoria. CAA represents the US and Canada.

7&7 courts Shirin In Love By ANDREAS WISEMAN

UK sales outfit 7&7 Producers’ Sales Service has boarded sales on US romantic comedy Shirin In Love, written and directed by Ramin Niami. Set in the affluent IranianAmerican community in Beverly Hills, the film stars Nazanin Boniadi as a quirky twenty-something who, on the eve of her wedding, causes turmoil for her family when a handsome, enigmatic outsider opens her eyes to a different world. Amy Madigan co-stars with comedians Maz Jobrani and George Wallace. Producer Karen Robson said: “Shirin In Love will be widely distributed in US theatres in early 2014 as a co-release with AMC Independent and we have produced a superb Farsi-dubbed version that will also screen in select US cities and will be available to foreign distributors.” The film is due to receive its first market screening at Berlin’s European Film Market in February.
