Mayfield Junior School offers a unique independent school education with caring teachers, a collaborative and inclusive classroom experience, and a strong, innovative curriculum designed to enable students to attain, comprehend, and master essential concepts, content, and skills. Lower School In the Lower School [Grades K-4], a nurturing environment encourages children to explore and discover, develop new talents and learn not only from their teachers, but also from each other. A Mayfield education is a values-added experience that provides students the academic challenges of reading, math and science, along side opportunities to build confidence in physical education, appreciate other cultures in foreign language and find new possibilities in instrumental music. Our whole child philosophy incorporates the chance to perform in a play, write and illustrate a story using an iPad, and express creativity in an art class. The common thread throughout the lower school years is cultivating joy in learning and the importance of compassion and understanding. Middle School In exploring content and posing questions, middle school students gain the ability to think critically, to evaluate, to analyze, to extrapolate and to synthesize information, and to be creative. The core curriculum and extra curricular courses allow students to further develop skills and explore talents as independent and collaborative learners while a consistent theme of compassion and awareness promotes citizenship and responsibility. Communication is abundant, as is the integration of technology. Outdoor education field trips connect the science classroom with real-world experience. A healthy dose of athletics and a host of fine arts options complete our unique Middle School experience. The entire program is supported by dedicated and innovative faculty members who embrace the challenges of the time, encourage discovery, and foster a love of learning.

L I F E A F T E R M AY F I E L D J U N I O R S C H O O L The eighth grade is a year of greater responsibility and leadership. Eighth graders organize major school events such as the Harvest Festival, Love Grams and Blue & White Day and they become role models as Student Council officers and heads of School Families. Given the opportunity to meet the challenges of the year as individuals and as a group, the class develops strong bonds and grows in confidence. A Mayfield Junior School education comes full circle when the time comes to send our eighth graders off to high school and out into the world. Every spring a feeling of anticipation and perhaps a little anxiety fill the air. Will I get into my first choice? Happily most will. Mayfield graduates are accepted to and attend some of the best secondary schools within the greater Los Angeles area and beyond. While the choices are many and can often be overwhelming, the school takes an active role in assisting with the application process and works in partnership with students and parents to help them make thoughtful, well-informed decisions. In keeping with our mission, the ultimate goal of the secondary school process is to ensure the placement of each student in a school environment best suited to his or her academic strengths, personal interests and individual needs. It is a big step to leave the familiar hallways and courtyards of Mayfield, but well prepared and confident our students thrive in the right school.
