Five years ago, Alan Clements wrote an inspiring book – A Future to Believe In. This book title is also the motto of the Sanders campaign. The book’s subtitle is, A Guide to Empowerment, Revolution and the Universal Right To Be Free. We seem to be in a hall of mirrors at the funhouse, where all of our quirks are blown up to look weird. At times it’s funny, but right now it’s weird and scary; and it’s time to find an exit to get fresh air. It’s almost the end of May, and the quadrennial rat race has narrowed to a neofascist, sociopathic narcissist and a bland, neoliberal superhawk who are – gasp – tied in polls in key battleground states. Clinton has so much baggage – the emails, the server, the distrust and dislike – that people are thinking about Canada again. Brrrr. Trump skunked the Republican Party establishment; and Clinton, who has had the entire corporate political and media machine promoting her, still hasn’t been able to seal the deal. As Amy Goodman said, the major networks are bringing you “a small circle of pundits who know so little about so much, explaining the world to us and getting it so wrong.” But wait, put down the razor blades. We don’t have to choose ‘the lesser of two evils,’ or what Gov. Jerry Brown calls ‘the evil of two lessers’ – those distasteful nominees whom a majority of the public believes lack integrity and honesty. No, we have Bernie! Bernie has attracted massive crowds all over the country because he is seen as an honest, trustworthy, straight-talking man of great moral courage and integrity. He speaks to the 99 percent who know that the game is rigged

and that the elites are a club; and as George Carlin reminded us, “you ain’t in it.” While Hillary is barely even with Trump in the polls, Bernie consistently beats him by double digits – 11 to 15 percent. At the time of this writing, the narrow path to the nomination and presidency is there if we can stay the course with the Sanders campaign. Even if he does not win, his campaign has exposed the schism in the Democratic Party and empowered a new generation of activists. The revolt against underhanded party manipulation, and distaste for the war hawk Hillary, caused Hawaii Representative Tulsi Gabbard to resign from the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to endorse Bernie. A similar separation has occurred from Maine to the state of Washington, as ‘Berners’ from ages 18 to 80 have challenged rules committees and exposed voting irregularities. Across the country and around this state, old and new activists have risen up to demand a more open, more transparent process. They are getting into the nuts and bolts of convention politics to wrest control from the old guard. When voters passed the Maui GMO Moratorium bill in November 2014, Mayor
Arakawa, already an outspoken opponent of the initiative, ordered his county attorneys to silently side with Monsanto in the seed industry federal lawsuit, to prevent the ordinance we passed from being implemented. That tactic was in dramatic contrast to what happened in Kauai and Hawaii counties, where the administrations sought help in appealing similar seed industry lawsuits. Collusion? Corruption? Whatever it is, it emboldened a new wave of pono politicians to come forward to challenge the developer-friendly political establishment. It’s the same story at the state level, where lobbyists have prepped industry-friendly bills for politicians. It was quite easy for A&B to get senators and representatives to approve HB2501, giving the dying sugar company three more years of public trust water. Voting isn’t revolutionary, but we must begin by making the dysfunctional function better for people, not just corporations. The Hawaii primary will take place Saturday, August 13; winners will go on to the general election in November. Get an absentee ballot and please vote. There are important races for State House districts. For District 11, South Maui, we have to keep Kaniela Ing in office. Kaniela has integrity and works very hard for all of Maui. In District 12, Upcountry, voters have the opportunity to replace the corporate shill Kyle Yamashita with the highenergy and wise Tiare Lawrence. North Shore voters in District 13 can vote for a hard-working Haiku neighbor, Alex Haller. County races are more complex. Move Forward And Carry The Memory Of The Miracle
By Liah Howard Most of us who have been on a path of spiritual growth have had a “peak spiritual experience” along our journey. What does this mean? How do we remember and integrate an extraordinary spiritual experience into our ordinary life? One of the key elements of a peak spiritual experience is an exaggerated sense of timelessness. This different awareness of time brings one more fully into the present moment. Living in the present moment intensifies and enhances the sensory world. Colors are brighter, sounds are clearer and the body is awake! As the physical senses come alive, feelings of wonder and love also intensify, and there is a palpable sense of “otherworldliness” that envelops the soul. In addition, there is a sense of being connected and a part of a greater whole. Some call this sense of connectedness God, universal consciousness or the infinite all. These experiences of the divine can be gateways that invite us to alter the way we live, allowing the mystical realms to infuse the ordinary aspects of life. Years ago, I practiced fire-walking to help me blow through some fears I had about bringing my psychic work out into the world. In the dark of the starry night in a field near some redwood trees, a fire taller than me burned fiercely, surrounded by a group of 20 people deep in meditation. As the huge logs burned and then crashed down, the hot burning coals were carefully raked into a long bed. It was time to walk! I wanted to go first so I wouldn’t change my mind. I remember feeling as though I was being carried lightly over the 1200-degree coals by an invisible force of love. The coals were warm, like a hot pavement, but no worse than that. When I reached the other side of the 12-foot coal bed, I danced with joy and said, “If I can do that, then I can do anything!” My feet were unscathed by the hot coals. While fire-walking, I felt more alive than ever before and my belief in the power of mind over matter was strengthened. This experience enlarged my faith, and translated into the courage I needed to enlarge my business life. However, it is unrealistic for me to think that I can live every moment of my life with that sparkling enthusiasm and faith in the invisible force of love that I felt that starry night. I admit at times, fears come up and I yearn to feel as deeply trusting and radiantly alive as I did when I completed that fire-walk. Mystical spiritual experiences leave a very deep imprint on our minds, hearts and bodies; but when they pass, we have our human frailties and our day-to-day duties to deal with as we live our lives. To integrate the feeling of divine connection that the mystical experiences bring, one must let it go. For it is in fully living each moment now that the spirit of life and love can be felt. We breathe deeply into this body, this breath, this life, and we reconnect with our essence. We then can move forward and carry the memory of the miracle as a golden jewel kept sacred in our hearts for strength, courage and faith when we need it most. Channeling Your Own Creative Power
By Paul O’Brien Spring in full bloom is a perfect time to spread your creative wings – including through playfulness, joy and humor – with some playful monkey business. If you’re feeling more creative or playful than last year, it might have to do with this being the Chinese Year of the Monkey. This nimble, playful and oh-so-clever primate wants adventure or to seek out more creative solutions (in contrast to the energy of last year’s Goat, which was more about careful footing and diligence). How can we channel creative energy this year that supports our learning and productivity? Well, truly fruitful creativity requires focusing your attention and doing things in the right order. Ironically, these boundaries free up creative power so it can flow through us. Hardly anything is more joyful than creative productivity! Focus on goals. Creative power is unlimited, but requires focus to produce effective or pleasing results. If you want to creatively design or produce something, make your goal enough of a top priority to work toward it every day. That’s how I finished my book, Great Decisions, Perfect Timing. I wrote an hour or two upon waking every morning for over four years – every day of the week, no matter where I was. In spite of the disciplinary aspect of making myself do this, I found I kept discovering fresh insights! Do things in the right order. Creative Power is the first archetype of the great Chinese oracle – the I Ching, or Book of Changes. It represents the highest expression of pure Yang ‘doing’ energy. As the Visionary I Ching App advises, if your goals are in alignment with the greater good – if you assert yourself in a positive way – actions taken with good timing produce success. How do we channel creativity most effectively? We start by doing
things in the right order, while creating some space for creative inspiration. A mindfulness practice like the “Letting Go” meditation taught in Great Decisions, Perfect Timing, is an easy way to release mental roadblocks, “priming” your mind for better intuitive reception. It’s critical to learn how to clear your mind of distractions and emotional clutter when you need a creative solution the most! Work can be fun! If you are focused on a creative pursuit, make sure to take in the pleasure and joy of the experience. A recent article in Current Biology by Patrick Bateson noted that “acting playfully” and “coming up with new ideas” and being humorous are linked. Interestingly, playful creativity was defined as an internal human attribute – as opposed to being motivated by external rewards, which were shown to actually inhibit creativity! Organizations should take note that it is beneficial to profits and customer satisfaction for staff members to be playful and creative at work. Bateson points out that companies like 3M give employees a portion of each day to engage in “speculative ideas” to help spur their creative juices. Channel your creativity. Let feelings of deep pleasure sink in … let yourself enjoy the process – whether you’re writing, playing music or making art. If you feel distracted or frustrated, do a quick “Letting Go” meditation, or just put creative work aside and escape into something you enjoy. By combining focus, timing and playfulness, you will be able to joyfully channel creative power. So, plant some wild seeds and manifest some monkey business! The Forgiveness Factor
By Suzän Proia, C.Ht. Why is the act of forgiving so challenging for most of us? The process of holding on to a past hurt requires a great deal of energy and is a burden in itself. This blocks us from moving forward to a healthier state of mind. Choosing forgiveness is a direct route to reclaiming our personal power. When we give ourselves permission to forgive, we have a reason to celebrate. We create a golden opportunity to let go of our negative feelings towards the source of our pain (the person, event or situation) and release the emotional weight we have been carrying. As we let go of the discomfort caused by a perceived injustice, we make room in our hearts. Once that opening is created, we can choose to fill the space with warm energy, love and joy. Hidden within the experience of forgiving is a unique chance to shift our personal history. We are able to “emotionally reset” that which has transpired. Does this mean we must forgive and forget? No, not necessarily. It is always essential to protect ourselves. Remembering the challenges we have faced and the transgressions we have experienced will allow us to increase our survival skills. How do we forgive? Start by forgiving yourself for holding the hurt. We are human, after all! Find a path that works for you – perhaps meditation, EFT, or prayer. Realize there is a lesson to be learned. Recognize that the actions of others are a reflection of them; don’t take them personally. Remaining upset is like giving someone power over you. Moving Past Your Fears
By Linda Rayner, M.D. Although many issues can block your path to success, one of the most important is fear. Some fears are related to stepping outside of your comfort zone. After experiencing pain in your life, your subconscious can try to protect you by avoiding activities and interactions that could challenge your sense of safety. Some fears can paralyze us, but do not actually threaten our survival (e.g., fear of failure, not being good enough, repeating past mistakes, and fear of the future). These types of fear can dissipate quickly once you push through them (although some help using energy psychology tools can ease the process). Then, there are the fears that seem insurmountable – ones that no amount of pushing can get you through, and that never seem to get easier. These roadblocks can be more challenging to overcome, as their roots tend to be deeper and go further back in your past – either in your ancestral line or past lives. Painful experiences lead to frozen emotions and beliefs about reality, causing you to choose to never let this happen again. The energy of this choice can seep through from your ancestor(s) or past life experiences, and create an energy vibration that you carry around which blocks you from succeeding. For example, a past event that led to rejection can result in you carrying rejection energy, which will either attract rejection into your life or stop you from taking any actions that might elicit rejection. When you release these old blocks and the beliefs tied up with them, there is more room for your True Self to shine through and more energy available for you to reach your peak. By Susan Varsames Look around. We all have history, and the baggage that comes with it can either drag you down or be used as scaffolding to lift you to your best self. What is your past doing for you? Can you look back and give gratitude for your history? Do you recognize the trauma and even minor bumps in the road as part of how you have evolved? If not, what is getting in the way? Reaching for the best version of you can be a scary path, but using the experiences you have lived through can assist your process. The top three intervention strategies I recommend for your best brain functioning and body healing are: Clear your body of toxins. Your food, body and household products, and your thoughts and relationships need to be pure! Eat a plant-based diet of raw foods as much as possible, completely avoid GMOs and pesticides, and make your own body and cleaning products with vinegar, lemons, lavender, and therapeutic grade essential oils. Clear your mind with meditation. Breathe deeply to increase oxygen to your cells, and listen to the silence of your mind. It whispers wisdom that you are missing while you multitask with electromagnetic pollution devices. Be You, Wear Blue!
By Jenny Grace Shaw If I had a dime for every time I hear the questions: “When will I ever get a break, Ms. Jenny Grace?” “When is everyone going to stop judging me? I don’t judge them.” “What do I keep doing to make them judge me, and when will I get it right?” When these kinds of questions become part of a person’s internal dialogue, repeating hour after hour, it can be selfabusive. Often the “victim” never really knows what they did “wrong.” When someone asks me these questions, I feel a rush to take on the role of “protector” – flying in with a cape, fancy armor, and magical powers giving me the ability to ‘save the day.’ But alas, I cannot. I may be in the healing field but I have nothing compared to the powers they actually own, even if they are unaware of them. Even if I could ‘save the day,’ the truth is that I believe in the gifts of life’s challenges. Though I would never wish pain upon another, I wholeheartedly support the power of self-recognition and empowerment that can only be found through a healing process. When we healers take over and try to ‘fix’ another’s problem, we have stolen from our clients and friends a universally-designed opportunity for them to build self-love, self-trust and selfcompassion. Letting go with love is a gift to the other person, more than we can ever truly imagine. We can offer genuine compassion to another, in place of taking ‘inventory’ of them, which simply keeps our own ego nourished while others starve. When we cross boundaries and use the justification that “I know and do it better,” we are blinded from our own arrogance. I am not separate from the other. I know the dark side intimately. I know the deep hole within which every soul can easily fall. I have watched myself walk, or even run, right up to the hole and practically jump in; and then look around and wonder to myself, “Why?” “Why me?” “Why again?” I have experienced the feeling of despair. I know what it’s like to hang on by just a shred of hope. I would love to say that I hold the key to freedom from intense emotions like fear, anxiety and shame. As a healer, I can be a part of the healing process. I can stand beside you as you bravely walk through the dungeons, dodge bullets and face each demon as it arises. I can hold your hand while you find your own light and courageously shine it upon each part you once denied or loathed; and as you now offer empathy, respect and compassion instead. I can also joyfully cheer with you as you celebrate each ‘win’ in the battle to live authentically. I am here to remind you of where you’ve been, how far you’ve come, how hard you’ve worked, how powerful you discovered you really are, and how absolutely beautiful and significant each part of you is. So, luvies, calmly invite curiosity and compassion to your party and choose authenticity. If you’re feeling unappreciated and unacceptable, choosing to live authentically is always the way out. The energy and courage it takes to live transparently and vulnerably, far outweighs a shame and fear-based existence. Be you, dear ones. If you want to wear blue on an ‘all red’ day, do it. By Ann Paquin Life sometimes shows us that we simply can’t force the motivation or timing on how certain things will unfold. Building basic trust and listening to Divine Timing are two powerful ways to do less, accomplish more, and flow. For example, we may pursue activities that don’t work out no matter how hard we try, and we spend all of our time and energy focusing on things that are not meant to happen at this time or at all. Ego may tell us to become more motivated and keep pushing. The result of pushing to make something happen, however, taxes our adrenal glands and zaps us of our discipline and energy. Of course, there are some things in life that we don’t feel like doing and don’t feel motivated to do, like paying bills. In these instances, it is helpful to become present through meditation, breath or sensation to relax into the broader perspective and optimum timing. However, when we pursue our most desired goals, there may be times when it is better not to force motivation; and instead, move in the direction of flow. When we spend time in our flow, it is regenerative. We become resourceful and energized, and we can accomplish more than we might have imagined. We experience synchronicities and unexpected support, increasing our trust that life will work out well. We understand the importance of balance, rest, no-technology days, or to simply be in nature. For peak performance, try focusing on what is already going well naturally, and see if motivation expands in that direction. By Judy Levy I just hit my 7th Maui birthday and I am so grateful to be living here on this lush island. If we progressive environmentalists continue to speak up and have our voices heard, then imagine what this island will be within the next decade – this land has the potential to be even greener and lusher than it is now. Once the poisonous pesticides have been remediated, this beautiful a’ina will be regenerated! Some brilliant permaculturists – Jenny Pell and her team – have proposed the perfect plan so that we could grow all of our own food. At the time you read this, hopefully we will have gathered the necessary 10,000 signatures to get the Community Farmland Initiative on the ballot. This law would set up a process so agricultural lands (including our last remaining sugar plantation which is shutting down operations) can potentially be converted into public agricultural parks; and the land would then be leased to large numbers of local farmers using organic and regenerative agricultural practices. Our power to transmute Maui’s environmental issues lies in local government; this is where we can have influence. The upcoming primary is crucial to help elect a new County Council. I am encouraging all Baby Boomers to get on board! We can’t slide from our responsibility, as we committed to do this work long ago. Our generation signed up to make the world a better place. Reaching Peak Performance By Michelle DeStefano, C.Ht. Is peak performance only for athletes? For many years, people have used hypnosis in sports to gain an edge over their competition. Many athletes know that sports competitions are not entirely a physical endeavor, and that one’s mental state is just as important. The athletes who have a greater advantage for peak performance, not only strengthen their bodies to perform better, but also employ ‘mental fitness’ using hypnosis. Hypnotists help the athlete gain focus and concentration skills to stay calm and strong throughout the event. We tend to react better when we are in a calm and focused state of mind. Hypnotists enable people to cultivate the ‘right’ thinking, which includes imagination/visualization routines that give the athlete a tremendous advantage over their competition. Intuition and Feng Shui
By Cathleen McCandless Have you ever said, “I wish I hadn’t listened to my intuition”? Probably not; though it’s highly likely there have been times when you wished you had. Intuition is the inner voice that speaks from the heart, gently guiding you to where you need to be for your highest good. Listening to your intuition is one of your best tools when identifying good feng shui. Studies prove that people make up their minds within 10 seconds whether or not they will purchase a home. They may have a list of things they’re looking for, but ultimately they’ll make their decision based on their intuitive response to it. That initial intuitive/emotional response is almost always correct. It is when we get in our heads and try to rationalize reasons to not listen to our intuition that we get ourselves into trouble. I have worked with many clients who have regretted purchasing a home, saying that they intuitively didn’t feel right about it in the beginning. Ignoring their intuition, they went ahead and purchased it anyway because it was a great deal, someone talked them into it, or they thought they would learn to like it better over time. The truth is, whatever you don’t like about a home in the beginning will only amplify the longer you live there, especially if it’s something that can’t be changed. The next time you’re uncertain about whether a place, situation, or relationship is right for you, try checking in with the way your heart feels. The heart is where intuition resides. You will find that the more often you listen to your intuition, the stronger it will become. And instead of saying, “I wish I had listened to my intuition,” you’ll be grateful that you did. The Alchemy Of Sound
By Crystal Lober We are blessed on this island with an abundance of opportunities for sound healing. Because sound healing can take many forms employing the vibrations of the human voice as well as instruments that resonate – tuning forks, gongs, singing bowls – it is helpful to know how sound works with the body when selecting a sound healing technique. Sound works as a healing modality through brainwave entrainment. Entrainment happens when frequencies synchronize to each other. Our fluctuating brainwaves shift when presented with harmonious sound. With sound, we can entrain our brainwaves to shift from normal waking consciousness (beta state) to a relaxed state (alpha) and even theta (deep meditative) state. In my sound healing practice, I primarily work with alchemy crystal singing bowls because they allow us to reach that state of entrainment much faster than other methods. These bowls are made of pure quartz crystal that has been infused with precious metal, minerals and earth elements. These singing bowls have penetrating, resonant tones that are rich in harmonics. Energetically, alchemy bowls entrain refined frequencies that speak to our subtle energy bodies and our emotions. The alchemy of the bowls affects the energetic frequency produced by the bowl. Think of it this way – the vehicle is the resonating quartz crystal, while the message is the frequency of the alchemy picked up in the sine wave of the sound produced by the bowl. When a Rose Quartz bowl is played, the essence of the rose quartz (unconditional love and infinite peace) is transported via the sound. Not only are we hearing the sound of the singing bowls, we are also feeling the alchemy through our skin! By Maurgana Stiastny We are the Sun. We are the stuff from which stars are made. The more we can remove the blocks that keep us from our full expression, the more radiant, whole and resourced we will be. Many of us are awakening and evolving to be more present, more loving, and more kind. We are living from our hearts more fully, with a deeper knowing of our connection to all things. We are realizing that we do not live in a vacuum; we affect the world around us. We have opportunities to wake up and be present every moment. It is important to ground and feel the earth under your bare feet every day. We can harness the energy of the earth, sky, moon and sun. Filling ourselves with that light and then radiating it out to the world around us does not take much time, but it does take a relaxed effort. Daily practices of mindfulness are very helpful. Examples include Qi Gong, Tai Qi, Yoga, breath practice, meditation and prayer. It can be anything that makes you totally present and focused. The little things you do to be more present will have a larger impact. As we move forward into this new time, we are being called upon to awaken to our true nature. I find it helpful to place a hand on my heart and breathe into my chest and belly. This will bring you into a harmonic resonance, allowing you to feel your heart and move from that space. Your heart is filled with many neurons much like your brain, so it can help your entire being to focus on and move from your heart. Living from our hearts is the true spiritual revolution.

Amazing Benefits Of Castor Oil
By Shelby Molchan, CCHT Castor oil (Ricinus communis) has been used for therapeutic purposes since ancient times. Also known as Palma de Christi, or “Palm of Christ,” castor oil is a triglyceride of fatty acids consisting of almost 90 percent ricinoleic acid. Castor oil’s remarkable healing properties are thought to be the result of the high concentration of this unsaturated fatty acid. Ricinoleic acid is effective in preventing the growth of certain viruses, bacteria, yeasts and mold, and is the most potent antiinflammatory agent on the planet. The lipid structure of castor oil is easily transmitted through the skin, into the lymphatic system, making castor oil packs a very effective, all-natural healing tool. In the early 1900s, sleeping prophet and medical psychic Edgar Cayce brought awareness to castor oil packs by recommending them more than 500 times in his readings. He advised the use of castor oil packs for lymphatic disorders and for use on the liver. Placing a castor oil pack on the skin increases circulation, decreases inflammation (both internally and externally), and promotes elimination of toxins and healing of tissues and organs. Reach Your Peak With Zero-Point Rhythm And Energy By Douglas J. Price, D.C. Bringing to surface suppressed conflicts and utilizing tachyon (free energy) to reestablish order, are keys to peak performance and health. Just like a computer, we have the ability to operate at a peak level. In order to have peak performance, all channels must be open and as clear as possible. Soul and spirit defragmentation means that we need to learn our soul’s lessons to attachment so that our world becomes one with all that is. We may observe our bodies as a living bio-computer, which can be accessed through muscle testing and other measurements that can detect any fragmentation. Fragments can then be tested on the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels. Adjusting diet, exercise and meditations are the most common suggestions. However, there may be unconscious or subconscious blocks that influence our behaviors. Sometimes we do things that are not good for us, and life doesn’t turn out as we wish. We can check things that will help free us from these fragments in our bio-computer so that we may experience peak performance. Rhythm and energy must be reset to zero. As with all things in life, there is a rhythm that reflects the soul level. The first thing that will need to be altered is fixated rhythm caused by an unanticipated dramatic event that leads to the onset of disease – physical or psychotic. The founder of this work, referred to as German New Medicine, is Dr. Geerd Hamer. His first book – Cancer, Disease of the Soul – explains that all diseases are classified according to
altered rhythm, such as cold diseases and hot diseases. It actually will cause the body’s hard drive (brain and nervous system), software (psyche), and machine (inner organs and tissues) to become fragmented. Growing And Building Trust By Jenna Keck Trust shows up for me as a myriad of peaks. It appears as the relationship to the unknown with future situations I cannot control. When I try to pin it down, it can be elusive; or when my trust seems broken, I naturally brace myself in anticipating disappointment. I have spent so much energy trying to predict, grasp and calculate something unknown. This has often resulted in accumulated heavy emotional burdens, physical tension or perpetual negative thought patterns. I observed that this frenetic and unbalanced energy negatively influenced my love relationships, finances and health. Finding Spiritual Peaks
By Rich Ralston On my journey to find the spiritual mountaintops, I often find myself on a plateau. These are the places where I seem to cycle back and forth, experiencing old patterns of thinking. This can be frustrating. Only when I take the time to reevaluate what I am doing can I identify the old patterns. Once I understand the challenge, then I begin the process of clearing away the old thoughts and replacing them with new ideas. This is a process; not a one-time event. It is important to understand that thoughts create emotions, and emotions create behavior. So we begin where we first experienced the limited thinking patterns. Where did it all begin? Once I identify the source of the thoughts, I go back in my mind to the time I experienced it. I relive the emotional experience. I then take those thoughts and create an energy ball and release them from me; and I replace them with positive thoughts. The energy holding the thoughts of old emotions must be released. By doing this, I create a new reality of thought that supports me. It is important to work at it on a consistent basis to reprogram the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind is like a memory chip on a computer. It only holds the memory that has been downloaded on it. The data needs to be replaced in order for it to retain new information. It is worth the effort to clear ourselves and create new positive thoughts so that we can reach another mountaintop. We have many mountain ranges to conquer during the course of our lives.

~Divine Catastrophes~
By Dr. DreamingBear I have always been a lover at heart; not a leader or lecturer, but a lover. This has ruined my ‘reputation’ on occasion. My grandfather was an educated Palestinian man who endured the loss of his homeland, and still managed to make a way out of no way for his beloved family. Years later, Lebanon’s bullet-ridden landscape was where we first met, and visited the restricted area that allowed us to see across the border and into the holy land. There he picked up a rock and said to me, “We go through the worst to become our best; never forget where you came from, or let anyone shame you for being your most sincere self.” Then, with tears he kissed and threw the stone across the narrow valley, hoping to touch his ancestral home. The refugee curse followed me, having inherited a culture of displacement. I visited every country that called out to me, sharing music and poetry along the way. No place felt like home until I found Maui. This ocean-oasis became my own personal promised land. At first I got lost in the nature. I spent an entire year exploring Iao, Hana, Haleakala and the like before finding my community. My heart belonged to Maui and the sense of overwhelming beauty she inspired in me, musing my most mystical literary legacy. I found an ohana at Twin Falls, where I was able to live out the fantasy of loin-cloth-clad lad and inhabit a fabulous Formosa koa tree house. It was complete with fireplace, drawbridge, bathtub, kitchen, bedroom and a star tetrahedron canvas roof that opened up to an ocean view. Lucky me, but the DreamingTree was wherein came my multiple lover infamy. This ‘ill repute’ was compounded when shortly after, I was injured and disappeared into the spinal fusion medical world. I was in and out of the hospital over a dozen times, and to my
surprise I became dependent on a small cocktail of prescription painkillers to deal with the constant pain. Suddenly, I had lost touch with what I loved the most – Maui and her people. No doubt I acted unconsciously towards many, misusing my mana. I felt alienated from my own soul and couldn’t accurately interpret or communicate with others. (Radical Disclosure) I even contemplated ending it all, feeling so alone in my self-imposed solitude. Then amidst this intense isolation, my friend Home killed himself and his death became my clarion call to life. I stopped all meds at once, enduring withdrawals in hopes of being resurrected. Emotions and sensations returned as if I was feeling, tasting, smelling and seeing for the first time. Everything made me weep from the flood of emotions that had been medically inhibited along with the pain. Then, a sudden awful realization of all the hearts I had unintentionally hurt along the way flooded me, and I wept for weeks. This series of divine catastrophes has led me to this moment of absolute apology to all I’ve neglected. As grandfather Kanaan said, “We go through the worst to become our best; never forget where you came from, or let anyone shame you for being your most sincere self.” Now fellow lovers, I kiss the stone-ink of these words with tears and throw them across the void of forgiveness, hoping they’ll reach your heart’s holy ground. Do You Have ‘Computer Neck’?
By Erin Elster, DC Do you spend a lot of time working at a computer or slumped over a desk? Do you have chronic neck and upper back pain from prolonged computer use? For many computer workers, improper work station setup, sustained poor posture, and spinal misalignment may be contributing factors to ‘computer neck.’ Quite simply, ‘computer neck’ is caused by sitting in front of a computer with poor posture for prolonged periods of time. When our head and neck are held in a neutral, upright position, very little muscular effort is required to hold up our head. If we leave neutral, however, and allow our head and shoulders to roll forward, then our neck and upper back muscles must constantly contract to hold up our head. This constant engagement of the posterior neck muscles – due to forward head posture – leads to an overuse syndrome, which results in muscular irritation and pain. Longterm consequences may include muscle strain and spasm, disc herniation, arthritis, pinched nerves, and loss of the cervical curve. Several suggestions to counteract ‘computer neck’ are as follows. First, use proper computer ergonomics to prevent forward head posture while working. Second, use a speakerphone or headset to avoid pinching a phone between your neck and shoulders. Third, take frequent breaks to prevent sitting for longer than 30-60 minutes at a time. Fourth, maintain spinal and core fitness through practices such as yoga, pilates and/or weight training, to keep supportive spinal muscles strong. Finally, undergo an examination with a chiropractor specializing in the cervical spine (neck) to determine whether a misalignment of vertebrae is contributing to neck symptoms. By Frances Salvato Soothing massage may enhance peak performance by athletes and others. In contrast, stress can inhibit tissue repair and disrupt a body’s sleep cycle. In the context of human activity, the human stress response is related to survival. Increased muscle tension and sensitivity enabled our species to survive being hunted by predators or enemies competing for limited life-preserving resources. This sensitivity allowed us to take in more information about the environment and to be in a state of readiness to fight or flee. The mechanism to heighten our senses is most effective when we start from a state of ease. However, a prolonged fight-or-flee state results in poor circulation, body armoring, higher blood pressure, inefficient breathing, poor posture, decreased body awareness and an eventual adaptation to stay in fight-or-flight mode. A prolonged fight-or-flight state often leads to exhaustion and depleted immune resources, and gives rise to autoimmune dysfunction that sets the stage for chronic illness. There is a fascinating relationship between body language and two body systems: the nervous and endocrine systems that mediate the flight-or-fight response. The body language of stress includes elevated shoulders, a clenched jaw, forward head and collapsed chest. Such body language increases fight-orflight-related hormones that slow tissue repair and confuse the body’s sleep cycle; reduces lung capacity and the amount of oxygen available to cells, and can lead to a vicious pain-spasm-pain cycle. Massage therapy is among the quickest and most pleasant ways to remind the body to let go of the fight-or-flight response, increase body awareness and optimize posture. Touch therapies that focus on being pleasant rather than painful, stimulate the body to relax and repair itself. By Taryn Kama Even if you choose not to have social media in your life, it is undeniably a part of today’s society. Like the introduction of the Internet, the social media phenomenon has seeped into our everyday lives, whether we acknowledge it or not. It’s not just a way to keep up with friends and family, or read about trending topics the moment they happen; it is also a way to conduct business. Even if you choose not to participate, the evidence of its usage is everywhere. Icons and “@” symbols show up on signage, taglines and television. I am not saying that using social media is the new panacea for increasing sales or ramping up your business, because that wouldn’t be accurate. Face-to-face meetings and word of mouth will always be tried and true methods for increasing sales. Additionally, print advertising is still alive and well. However, when used strategically, social media can be a nice complement to how you currently do business, and it can help you reach your peak. The potential exposure and the ability to hone in to the right audience are closer to your fingertips than ever before. It’s also measurable. While this is a huge topic, I offer a few tips to help you navigate. If you are just beginning to use social media, choose one or two platforms – e.g., Facebook and LinkedIn. Get a personal account first, figure out how it works, and be an observer. After a while, you can start to use a platform for your business. By Sally Black When I found out my son was the victim of a violent crime in India, I came face-to-face with my deepest fears, darkest emotions and many unknowns. I immediately began a funding campaign and raised over $10,000 in four days from friends both known and unknown. Thankfully, my son made his way out of India and is recovering. Achieving my peak and success has been a lesson in accepting what is, and to never take anything for granted. I was undeniably forced to learn a lot more about healing by dealing with my own pain and struggle. Days of meditation, keeping my faith, and many tears took me deeper than I ever imagined. When placed in fearful, and what seem like unbearable situations to deal with, we can feel like we are frozen, unable to proceed with even our simple daily activities. When we are tested, our true selves become quite visible to us; we question ourselves and whether we can truly overcome the harsh realities of life – something that all of us experience at some point in our lives.
