A Blow Against The Empire
By Mark Sheehan “You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy…We must be cautious.” - Obe Wan Kanobe It was not in a galaxy far away, but in this county – far from the biotech hive – where the rebel alliance struck. The Maui Jedi warriors have been trained to work with the Force, to feel the mana of the land, to respect the aina. The Hawaiian warriors learned from their ancestors the many ways the capitalist/industrial food system disempowers and destroys. The empire never knew what hit them. It was a blinding strike against the 200-year-old missionary monoculture that eradicated a rich, diverse Hawaiian polyculture that had thrived in Hawaii for a thousand years. The rebel alliance could have been put together over drinks at the Star Wars cantina; the team came from around the galaxy. It was an improbable group, early dismissed as a ‘north shore local uprising’ of the haole and hippies. But then moms from a nearby star system joined in and then came the Hawaiians! With each community training, every march and every rally, the movement grew. At first, locals were suspicious and fearful. But the teachers were brilliant, and the revelations about health risks frightening. The small leadership had inexhaustible energy – they had the Force! The empire had all the advantages of the dark side – the support of local government and power players, ad experts, and pots of money. They listened in on the rebel phone calls, read their emails and still saw no problem, convinced their superior forces would easily crush the rebellion. The movement grew slowly, and then very

quickly as it went viral. Suddenly the message was everywhere; the moms were talking to all their neighbors, and the news exploded on the Internet as more and more people became appalled by the magnitude of the poisonous operations around them. The empire tried to instill fear in the farmers and confuse the masses. “There will be chaos,” they said, as they flooded airways and mailboxes with threats of economic chaos. “The rebels will destroy the natural order of the universe.” The local population watched, reflected and soon realized the empire is here only to mine and ship out our resources; it otherwise has no use for our small corner of the planet. The exports leave quickly while the chemicals stay behind, bio-accumulating in the soil, air, water and, inevitably, in us. “A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defense, never for attack.” The rebel alliance took Yoda’s advice and stuck to telling their truths from the heart. Soon, “Enuff Already!” became the rallying cry across this remote corner of the empire. When the campaign spending report came out, the rebel alliance pounced on it. As voters on the fence discovered the amounts spent to brain-
wash them, they mentally checked ‘Yes to test.’ “You are beaten. It is useless to resist,” said Darth Vader. High officials warned that if the new order were to be invoked, there would be ‘papaya police’ in your backyard, inspecting. Field workers doffed their hazmat suits and donned overalls to wave signs. Full-page ads listed hundreds of empire supporters. But Yoda assured us, “the Force…a powerful ally it is. Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we…” And so it is that the rebels built their alliance based on education, love of the land, respect for the host culture, and a pledge to tell the truth with compassion. The Force empowering the resistance is the same consciousness that is illuminating the global awakening, turning ordinary citizens into extraordinary activists determined to stop the chemical insanity. News Update – Within six hours of the GMO moratorium initiative being approved by voters on November 4 – a victory that echoed around the country – the biotech announced they would sue in federal court. But then, in a surprise move a week later, five citizens and the SHAKA Movement filed suit in state court to keep the matter on Maui where it belongs. The very next day, Monsanto and Dow, the Hawaii Farmer’s Union, et al. filed suit in federal court to have the law ruled illegal; Maui County joined in that suit. On November 17, Maui County agreed with U.S. Magistrate Judge Barry Kurren to prevent implementation of the ordinance before March 31, 2015. At press time, other lawsuits followed. Stay tuned! Glowing Through The Holidays And Beyond
By Craig King There is nothing as fun for the spirit and as nourishing for our bodies as indulging in a feast with friends. But how do we stay balanced and without regret come January 1st? As the season of celebrating shines before us, just a little focus and inspiration can prevent us from excess and ‘overdoing’ it. As the invitations overflow, it can be easy for us to lose balance. Focus on eating plant-based, nutrient-dense foods for breakfast and lunch. This is vitally important to deal with the extra stress and emotional turmoil that the holiday season can bring. Eating well throughout the day will prepare you for the evening ahead. Enjoy easy-to-digest foods such as soups, salads, juices and grains. Eat an hour before you go out to prevent attacking the Brie and cracker platter before the main course! Remember that sugar and processed foods are highly addictive. The more you have, the more you start to need in order to ‘feel good.’ If sweet treats are your weakness, bring a healthier option of something you love and can share. Then your willpower does not get tested and you do not feel deprived. Think rich dark chocolate, and superfood-based treats. Enjoy that crisp glass of Sauvignon Blanc, but before you go out, protect your stomach with good fats. An avocado is digested slowly, and will protect the stomach from the irritating effects of alcohol. When you get home, a green juice will help neutralize the alcohol. If you do wake up a little shaky, indulge in some fresh cold-pressed juice. Juice works because it replaces lost vitamins. The fruit sugar boosts your energy levels and may help your body eliminate toxins. Don’t beat yourself up about indulgences. The guilt and worry is way more toxic to your body (and your mind!) than anything you’re eating. Let go, savor and enjoy every delicious mouthful, and then make sure you get your greens and phytonutrients the next day to balance it out. Enjoy a little of everything. Don’t obsess. Just be conscious. Your body is amazing and can deal with a heavy meal, just not every day. If you wake up in the morning with regret, be gentle with yourself and jump straight back into your nourishing regime. On New Year’s Day 2015, how do you want to feel? Let it be a new year’s day every day from now! Do not use the excuse of the season to overdo it. It’s just not worth it. But if you do find yourself whimpering on the scales as the dawn of the New Year breaks, flush the word ‘diet’ out of your vocabulary and invite in ‘lifestyle.’ 2015 will be the year of self-care, not of deprivation. There is nothing to buy, and there are no gimmicks, pills or gym memberships. It will be a year of clean eating, walking, playing, swimming, hiking or whatever calls to you. A vibrant body is your natural state of being. So usher in the holidays with good vibes created through the power of fresh, delicious, nutrient-rich foods and juices. Be Open To Messages From Deceased Loved Ones
By Liah Howard As a psychic/channel who is also a medium, I am often asked if it is really possible to communicate with loved ones on the other side, and if so, how it is done. In my experience, it is possible. In fact, our deceased loved ones have the same query, for they want to connect with us as well. Messages of love, assurance and guidance regarding unfinished business often motivate these connections. Keep in mind, though, that the timing and frequency of spirit communication can be very unpredictable. Sometimes it happens immediately after a death and other times not until years later, if at all. This connection may happen spontaneously or be consciously invited in through meditation, hypnosis, psychic assistance, prayer or automatic writing. Visiting a location that is highly charged with our deceased loved one’s energy can be helpful, as well as holding an object or piece of clothing that carries their personal frequency. After death communication can be experienced more fully when we are open to the signs. Since our deceased loved ones are no longer constrained by the laws of the physical universe, they can manipulate the environment in surprising ways. They often send ‘signs’ such as lights flashing, TVs turning on, feathers, birds or butterflies appearing, or via radio or phones. In addition, our loved ones can make ‘knocks’ on the wall, bells ring or objects move. These paranormal signs of spirit’s presence can

either excite and delight us, opening our connection to them, or frighten and contract us, closing down our connection. I encourage you to relax and breathe deeply if you receive a sign; invite the love of your departed into your heart and listen inside for a message from them. Here is the story of how my dear 84-year-old mother connected with me on the day she died. I received two very distinct signs of her presence. and sat down on my bed while gazing at a pair of green and gold shamrock earrings. The earrings reminded me of my mom because she was all Irish and very proud of that fact. I felt in my heart that she was with me in that moment; I could sense her love surrounding me. Then I closed my eyes and told her how much I appreciated the way she taught me to honor my Irish ancestry by having gratitude for the gifts of spunk, strength and humor. Then the next sign appeared. From across the room, my iPhone started playing a beautiful angelic tune. I was stunned! The alarm on my phone was set to “Horse” and this was the farthest sound from a whinnying horse that I could imagine. I heard myself saying, “How can this be?” Then I surrendered to the situation, got out of my head and into my heart, and turned the phone off. Next, I lovingly clutched a picture of my mom to my chest and wept tears of gratitude. It was as if she knew I needed signs from her that she was okay and our love would go on. Prescriptions Offered For Living Free In An ‘Unfree’ World
By Eric T. Richter How do we live freely in a world that, on so many levels, seems unfree? We are taught as youngsters that we have freedom to do whatever we choose, and that we live in a free country. But do these things represent true freedom? Many of us are tied to jobs, mortgages and credit card debt. When the economy tanked in 2007, the economic bailout never trickled down to individuals, only to big corporations and banks deemed too big to fail. How do we awaken to true freedom in the midst of these realities? Consider the perspective of author, event producer, anthropologist, teacher and guide Happy Oasis. She shares, “As a child I realized that the link between happiness and freedom is enormous – and enormously overlooked. ‘Freedom is the greatest joy,’ proclaimed Buddha and other sages. I concur wholeheartedly. At the human level, this ‘wholeness’ is the sovereignty and freedom of each and every individual to do as they please as long as it does no harm to another or to the integrity of eco-systems.” Gamble’s wife, Kimberly Carter Gamble, a former journalist for Newsweek International, believes our freedom is an inside job. She says, “To me, personal freedom, human consciousness and social reality are one and the same. Living free has to do with who we think we are. Like Camus said, ‘The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become absolutely free, so that your very existence is an act of rebellion.’ So I believe living free is an inside job with outside ramifications.” As a social activist, Kimberly considers the ripple effects of personal freedom. “I become free to be completely present with what is while unabashedly visioning – and working toward – what is possible. When I take a stand socially, and engage in bold activism, my courage is not the result of some ego-based bravado. Smile And Say Cheese!
By Suzän H. Proia Focus. Smile. Click! Is everything in our daily life worthy of being photographed? Why do we feel the need to record poignant intimacies, take numerous “selfies,” and post them for everyone to see? Is it necessary to let the world know where we are located and what we are eating? How did we become so self-absorbed, and what have we given up as a result? Some of us are busily recording the minutiae of our lives, and perhaps we are upsetting a natural balance. The camera creates a filter between an individual and an event, while it preserves a moment in time without emotion. It is simply a nonjudgmental record keeper. When we eliminate the camera, our experience changes energetically. It is pure, natural and real. The lens is often a witness to a private situation, and that alone is enough to alter the dynamics of the outcome. This may be very subtle, or quite pronounced. Don’t misunderstand me. I am an avid photographer and value the artistic creations that a talented eye and a lens can produce, but there is a time and place for preserving life’s events. When the camera is always on, is the experience and spontaneity of the moment diminished? Is a marriage proposal less meaningful if cameras are not rolling? If we are so engrossed in the activity of documenting, are we fully living our lives? Enjoy capturing the wonderful and fleeting events, but remember to put your camera down on occasion. Give yourself a chance to etch your life’s momentous occasions inside your heart. Embrace the moment, you won’t regret it! Conscious Oneness
By Maribeth Theisen When my life gets busy and hectic, I sometimes forget there is only Oneness. I forget that we live, move and have our being in vast universes of love, peace, joy, health, prosperity and wisdom. Of course, it’s easy when life is unfolding smoothly and circumstances turn out the way I think they should. But the challenge is to hold that awareness when I feel I am bumping into barriers to my goals. In these times, the most significant remembrance is that I am one with all that is. I often hear people say they want to connect with God, Spirit or Source. The truth is, we can’t be disconnected! Even when we feel far from it, we are connected. If there is only Oneness, including peace, love and joy, then we are made up of it; and its ‘mind’ is available to us at any time we choose to tune in. I find comfort in knowing that, even when I get busy or distracted, that quiet and peaceful place is waiting for me. It’s the substance I am made of. It’s the connection between another person and myself. So, any circumstance, any moment or any person can be holy ground, an opportunity to sense that connection and perfection. How do we consciously get there? There are many paths. What each has in common is quieting the mind. The heart is where we carry the imprint of the love and wisdom that we are. “Spiritual awareness is a calling,” he tells me when I inquire when his own quest for spirit began. “There are different levels of readiness. We try to divide ourselves up, but there is no division. We all come from the same source.” Time spent with Dr. Dyer leaves one feeling all is right in the world. By ‘right,’ I don’t mean that terrible things don’t or won’t continue to happen. I mean there’s an overall sense, a belief, that if Dr. Dyer and others sharing similar messages of spiritual awakening continue on their path of enlightened leadership, then soon, hopefully sooner as opposed to much later, enough of the

world’s population will hear them, remember themselves as who they really are, and the world will tip towards love. During our conversation, Dr. Dyer quoted from memory half a dozen poems and lines from various authors. All were inspiring, but one stood out among the rest – “Nothing is more powerful than an idea whose time has come.” That’s Victor Hugo, the French author most notably known for penning Les Miserables. Another memorable, but not so famous quote from Victor is, “Light is satisfied in being light. Light is everything; the human race has no other love.” I think Victor and Wayne have each other’s numbers, despite the fact that Victor departed this world over a hundred years ago. By Nadia Toraman and Shakta As more of us become aware that our thoughts lead to the creation of our reality, we can actively begin seeking a practice that takes control of those processes in the mind. It’s not easy, but just like any other practice, you simply do your best! The practice of yoga brings the mind to a calm state or still point, allowing the spirit to take lead and direct our actions. We think our thoughts are our own, but do we really know where they arise from? It is said that they are like little bubbles rising up from our consciousness to play on the mind-field. A thought vibration tends to communicate with any matter in the surrounding environment that is capable of receiving it. Since the surrounding is filled with mental matter, which responds to such impulses, a kind of influence is created. Yogananda says that all thoughts vibrate eternally in the cosmos – thoughts are universally and not individually rooted; a truth cannot be created, but only perceived. Witnessing thoughts means we can observe the natural flow without being disturbed or distracted. When we align ourselves with our dharma (path which upholds), then the precious energy we cultivate through our asana, meditation, service and other practices will be directed in a higher way – to support thoughts that have positive outcomes for all. Amma speaks of sankalpa, or divine resolve; when we simply focus our minds and breath along with sacred vibrations such as Om or Ma (symbols representing divine light and divine love), we have made the sankalpa of what they represent. We can use these tools to nourish a mind that is more at ease, and to open to the divinity within.

By Jody Soltau Mountain Imagine contacting a remote tribe in the Amazon for the first time. Introducing modern technology such as electricity, cell phones and computers would most certainly seem ‘impossible.’ Ironically, introducing Ancient Indigenous wisdom to the modern person seems much the same. Our modern mind has no frame of reference for perceptions that challenge the scientific model of reality. For example, we know that hydrogen and oxygen compose water, but are we experiencing the Living Stream, Lake or Ocean? Similarly, we may have discovered that the average distance to the Sun is 93.76 million miles, but are we aware of a visceral kinship with this Star? These ideas seem diametrically opposed to the very matrix of modern Western understanding. We are taught to value what can be measured, proven and understood. However, just like the ‘impossibility’ of introducing cell phones to that remote tribe, an ‘unknown’ paradigm emanates from the worldview of Ancient People. This perception, however, is not just another way of looking at the world; it is our Natural State of Being. It is an awareness of Life devoid of the countless rules and regulations we have absorbed from our families, churches, governments and societies. In this tumultuous time, I believe we are being invited to ‘deprogram’ our consciousness and restore relationship with Life. This means that most of us raised in the West have to quiet our impulses to ‘help,’ ‘educate,’ and ‘convert,’ and take direction from what we may have classified as ‘primitive.’ Traditional Hawaiians and other Indigenous Peoples hold the keys to our survival as a race. We learn from them to re-set our foundation. Instead of prioritizing money or status, we need to ground ourselves in Aloha. Acting from this place, we will change everything, benefiting all of Life.

Celebrating Kwanzaa
By Ayin Adams, Ph.D. Kwanzaa is an African American and Pan-African holiday that embraces values such as community, family, culture and the individual. The name Kwanzaa comes from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza,” which means first fruits. During the seven days of Kwanzaa – from December 26 through January 1 – we acknowledge spirit, our ancestors, and seven principles for living more harmoniously. Although the African American community is small in the Hawaiian Islands, resident groups of African Americans, along with their friends and families, gather together in a tradition to celebrate the seven principles of Kwanzaa at the end of each year. Nguzo Saba refers to the seven principles upon which Kwanzaa is based. These principles are: Umoja, or unity; Kujichagulia, or self-determination; Ujima, or collective work and responsibility; Ujamaa, or cooperative economics; Nia, or purpose; Kuumba, or creativity; and Imani, or faith. The question asked at the start of every Kwanzaa celebration is, “Habari gani?” This is Swahili for, “What is the news?” Celebrants respond with the Nguzo Saba, or principle, of the day. Mkeka refers to a straw mat on which a Kwanzaa sacred altar is arranged. Sacred items placed on the mkeka include: mazao, a bowl of fruits and vegetables, especially those native to Africa; muhindi, or vibunzi, ears of corn that represent the number of children in the family; kikombe cha umoja, a unity cup; and zawadi, gifts. Kinara refers to a candleholder central to the celebration. Mishumaa saba are the seven candles of the Kinara that represent the seven principles of Kwanzaa. By Paul O’Brien Carl Jung’s teaching about archetypes was one of his groundbreaking contributions to psychology. He defined universal archetypes as psychic blueprints that lend form to how human beings perceive, interpret and respond to situations and relationships. Archetypes are an energy resource that we can call upon to support us on our path to individuation and wholeness. They reside in humanity’s “collective unconscious,” as Jung called it, from which they can be ‘downloaded’ to support personal development and lend us powerful support for overcoming challenges. We have all experienced how different we can feel just by changing our clothes. An archetype can be like a costume that we put on to embody the energy of a sage, trickster, sovereign or warrior – or even the gods, goddesses, demons and angels of mythology. By personalizing and taking on archetypal characters, it becomes easier to resonate with divine powers that are mystical and essentially unknowable by the logical mind. Praying to an all-powerful God is the most common form of invoking an archetype in Western culture. The shortcoming of the way we were taught to pray, however, is that it was a petition, a begging God for a favor or perhaps some sort of rescue. Now, it is good to be humble, but prayers of petition blur the line between humility and low self-esteem. An alternative way to invoke this archetypal energy would be to let Creative Power (the archetype of the first hexagram of the I Ching) flow through you. Invoking archetypes is a broader, more proactive form of prayer that can activate different powers on our behalf. From a practical point of view, it doesn’t matter whether we conceive of the divine as one God or many, but psychologically, a channeling approach is radically different than begging an all-powerful deity to do something for you. In this more empowering form that I call “invocative prayer,” we call upon archetypal energies to flow through us in order to help us grow into ourselves and follow our calling. We invoke the blessings of divine energy to help us rise to the occasion – through us, not to us – inspiring and empowering us to make better decisions and do our best. Invocative prayer is expressing an intention to the Universe and feeling grateful in advance as you welcome good results (the Manifestation Treatment in the Resources section of Divination.com offers a template). Invoking archetypes can work for you no matter what your belief system. When I was young, I was taught to say morning and evening prayers. Even now when I find myself going through changes, I return to a prayer ritual. Depending on what it is that I want to co-create, develop or preserve that day, I can call upon various archetypes in addition to Creative Power to help me stay more consciously connected to Infinite Intelligence throughout the day. In the evening, my prayer summons the healing power of dreams. In general, let’s live according to the Synchronicity Prayer: “May I notice synchronicities that arise during this day and pay attention to them. If I don’t understand their meaning, I trust it will be revealed in due course. Nourish Your Psyche With Your Emotional Diet

Remember who and what you really are, see yourself and others through the eyes of tenderness, and know at last, that we are all beautiful in the Heart of Goddess, all will be forgiven of their inconsistencies, all will be welcomed into the boundlessness of Becoming! In the end, Wild-Love, you cannot be diminished, you cannot be abandoned or forgotten, for you are held in the soul of Source, and one day, when all dualities have dissolved, even your worst enemy will become a part of you, even as they have always been. Knowing this, now you can smile and be amused that you have been tortured so by the wisps of nothing that surround our lives. Succeeding In The Quest By Eli Jaxon-Bear
Before we begin the spiritual search, we first try analgesics. We ignore the pain of our life by distracting ourselves. We become very busy with career, family, surfing or any other pursuit that we can give our attention to in order to stay distracted. We don’t have time for insight or emotional pain. This is the “ignorance is bliss” school of life. For some people it works. We may also become involved in emotional intensity as a way to fill the space left by our ignoring what is already here. Relationships with family, lovers, friends or co-workers create the emotional dramas that ride on top of the deeper, untouched pain and
fear of life and death. For most people this is where life is spent. A life of pleasures and pains, gains and losses, family and tragedy is where life begins and usually ends for most of us. We often die with the hopes that our children will have a better life and will find something that we did not even know to search for. Suffering, it seems, is the human condition. We are born only to replicate, grow old and die. In the past, it seemed to most people that the best we could do is to take care of our family, have the most success, pleasure and money, and live a relatively comfortable and good life. But in our time, a deeper possibility has emerged – this possibility of freedom from
Gangaji and Eli Jaxon-Bear suffering, not as a practice or a future goal, but as a living possibility for each of us. This is what informs our time now. For now, it has been received in our collective psyche; the meme has spread through the Internet that it is possible to wake up and be free. This possibility did not exist for our parents or their parents for countless generations before because they had not yet heard of it. Now that we have heard the call, how will we respond? We have to be willing to penetrate the ignorance, to stop and face what we have been running from. The secret into direct realization is to fully stop, as we will see. We must be willing to invite our pain, our fear of living and our fear of dying, our fear of separation, our sense of worthlessness and despair. By going in the direction that we have been avoiding, we discover what we have been searching for. When we are deeply willing to experience whatever may be here, we will penetrate to the substratum where everything is born. Here, prior to the arising of anything at all, we realize peace and freedom. We discover who we are. By Eliza Bassett This northern hemisphere’s Winter Solstice is quite unique as the New Moon transpires just hours after the Sun enters Capricorn on December 21st in Hawaii Standard Time. This is the third in a series of five New Moons on the first day of each sign. The New Moon in Pisces will be the last one in this group. The Aries New Moon, April 18th, will be at 28 degrees of that sign. This series of New Moons at the 0 degree is very rare. Usually, the moon shifts the numeric position it has New or Full Moons at by at least two or three degrees. For people who know their Sun’s position is considered at a ‘cusp’ of a sign, these New Moons are feeling more than a little different. People who have planets at the 0 or 29th degree may be experiencing a sincerely different approach to life during these New Moons. Still Learning About Love
By Rich Ralston In my spiritual quest, I have experienced a wide range of practices associated with religion. I have written a book – Subtle Energy and the World We Experience – about what I believe concerning the practice of religion and how our thoughts influence our beliefs. When it comes to spirituality, I have learned more from crossing over departed souls than I have from all of my religious experiences. Since I have the ability to communicate with these souls, I ask questions. I have been journaling questions and answers for quite some time. I ask them what their spiritual practices were while on earth, and what their viewpoint is now that they are no longer in the physical body. The answers vary, but the common denominator is that they want to learn and experience unconditional love. After our physical body dies, the memory of who we are, including our spiritual beliefs, stays with us. I refer to this as our Heavenly consciousness. Our personality is held in our consciousness. When I communicate with a departed soul, I observe them as if they were still alive. Recently, I crossed over about 20 Heavenly souls who had died on Maui in the 1930s. They had died in a local hospital and were afraid to cross into the light leading to higher dimensions. I asked them why they were afraid. They said they were afraid they would go to purgatory. I explained that this teaching was no longer valid and that their own fear kept them in a state of purgatory. I sent angels to them, and they were eager to cross over and return to their soul group. Get Up And Move!
By Lavenda Schaff Sometimes we become so comfortable on the couch, but then we hear that nagging voice urging us to get up and move. We resist another day, relax on the couch, and there it is again. Once we listen, we might get up 10 minutes earlier each day to start a daily meditation practice or new fitness program to strengthen our awareness and physical body. The quest for spirit might guide us to a camel ride in the desert, or encourage us to greet our grumpy neighbor with Aloha. Or, it might inspire us to sing our favorite tune at an open mic event despite our inability to hold the pitch. The actual movement that is being called forth might be internal, such as experiencing powerful inner transformation at a workshop, or external, such as traveling around the world. Whichever journey we take, we experience a deeper connection within. It requires courage to leave a comfortable and settled situation or way of being. The spark inside motivates us to step out of the ordinary and reach for more happiness. Our souls want to stretch and expand; that is why we manifested on Earth. The quest for spirit moves us away from the norm, as well as the concepts, assumptions and expectations of our surroundings. The courage to face discomfort and disagreement with others brings deep rewards – love for self, and enthusiasm and happiness for life. To listen to that nagging voice fires up our soul. Eventually we feel more grounded in this world, with a sense of being closer to the Divine and our creative genius; in this place, we experience deep contentment with Self. Who Have I Evolved Into?
By Samana Benedetti I had quite a challenging time in my life. I knew I was depressed because everything I did was so much effort and I quickly discarded most tasks due to lack of energy. I tried everything to change my state and nothing worked, until I made a decision to try the only choice left – let go and start over. I realized every outcome was blocked because my situation was no longer serving me. I had learned all I could. My spirit was dying. I released attachment to all outcomes and became willing to walk away from everything. In that moment, my energy and mental clarity came back. I saw the steps I needed to take towards ‘unwinding’ the stickiness of my life. All struggles we encounter are merely an illusion the spirit manifests to ‘steer’ us in the right direction. The challenges are only that, when we do not ‘go with the flow.’ We are spiritual beings in a body, not just a shell whose only needs are eating, sleeping, and defecating. We are on this planet for such a short time to learn, love, create beauty, and to inspire and surprise even ourselves. If you are not able to ‘live’ the current life you created with enough vitality and passion, it may be time to check in and ask yourself: Who have I evolved into? What does my spirit need to fulfill its purpose, to be alive? Are my current relationships supporting this direction? If you do not know these answers or if you answered “no” to the last one, you have a choice – you can continue living a life without meaning or have the courage to see what needs to change. Hints To Navigate Roads With Black Holes By Jenny Grace Shaw In the middle of the road I walk down every day is a deep black hole. I know it’s there, and I know there are different roads leading to my destination, yet I still walk down this road with the deep black hole. I fall in the hole every time I walk on this road. I get upset, scared, angry and even shameful after crawling out of the hole each time this happens. I feel awful, and I then blame the hole for being in my way, all the while recognizing the hole has no power over its destiny like I do. Hmmm…wait a minute. I have power over my own destiny? Though I know of other roads to travel on, why do I repeatedly turn my compass toward the road with the deep black hole in the middle of it? Why do I continually put myself at the door of sabotage? Is it ego? Do I think, “This is the day that I am going to be able to beat that hole!” or “Nothing is ever going to beat me; I can ‘handle’ this on my own”? Or, am I believing the deep black hole is what I deserve – that I deserve to fall, and further, that I don’t deserve to get out. Is this the reason why I stay in the hole longer sometimes, or keep returning to it with full knowledge that I will fall in? Sometimes I wonder if I like the hole. Do I actually feel safer being in the hole than out of it? Life is filled with these deep black holes – we may call them enemies, trauma, issues, or even family. The goal is not to find the

perfect road; rather it’s to identify, embrace and evaluate the reasons for staying on the same road. The goal is not to label ourselves ‘right or wrong,’ ‘good or bad,’ but to honor the very fact that we are both right and wrong, good and bad; and every decision and every road is ours to choose. Not only that, but every road has its own beauty as well as its faults. We need not fear that road with a deep back hole as if it were our destiny. We can walk around it and show ourselves that we

can handle challenges and take care of ourselves. We can reassure ourselves that even if we go down that darn road again, fully knowing what will occur, we are forgiven. We are human. We are still okay. We will awake in the morning, ready to venture again. The truth is, it’s not failing that brings us to our knees; rather, it’s the idea of our own successes that steals our soul’s breath. We do have the ability and strength to live through the discomfort of trying a new road; we need not stay stuck simply because something is familiar. We need not try to hide from our own empowerment by blaming others for our unhappiness. I find it interesting when I hear people jokingly use the phrase, “It’s all about me.” Well, it really is all about you. So let us reclaim our power simply by embracing the fact that we have the power. You are the only one who knows which road is aligned with your destination. By Debbie Dehm This year I have been thinking a lot about community – to which community I belong and what that means to me. This theme has come up for me through the community’s involvement in the SHAKA Movement, as I see like-hearted people working together to protect the land and the children. It takes many dedicated people to launch a movement like this and I am so happy to live on Maui where people are willing to step up and make change happen. The theme of community has also come up because I recently changed my website to include other healers on Maui. I also started Community Healing Day once a month in my office space. We have had three of these events thus far where we, as a community of healers, provide our services for love donations only. Our intention is to educate people about what we do and serve them a small dose of healing. The people who have come to these events usually sample everyone’s work and spend a few hours with us. It is like a mini retreat. What often happens is that we trade healing with each other, or at the very least get to know one another better. I am so grateful to be part of this community of dedicated healers with positive intentions to help others. It isn’t about money or fame. Our events have provided a very quiet and safe healing space for people to receive what they need. You can feel the love and compassion from all of the healers, eager to share their knowledge and skills.
By Maurgana Stiastny I have always been a seeker. Born into a Catholic family, I liked doing the rosary as a child. When I was 16, I started to study yoga, which would become a deep passion and love of mine. I would go to the big Barnes & Noble in downtown NYC and peruse the spiritual section for hours. I was searching for a deeper understanding to life and purpose. Many of us feel a separation from the divine, which happens early in life due to many circumstances. Throughout my life, I have walked many paths – the Wiccan path, the Native American Red Road, Vajrayana Buddhism, Sufism, Taoism and others. With all of these, my goal was to find God, to feel connected. I truly believe in the expression, “the paths are many.” I have learned that I do not need to go to any temple or place to find God. The divine dwells within us and all beings and all of nature. The more I am able to be thankful and remember that divine nature is within us and all around us, the more connected I feel. Our culture teaches us that nature is a backdrop for human activity. And yet, as I deepen my connection to nature, feeling a true kinship to plants and creatures, then I feel intricately connected to a living web of divinely animated creation. So the spiritual life really is here and now. I enjoy practicing rituals that make me stop and be still and reflective. We each can create what is meaningful for us. If we choose, we can all walk the path of Light, Peace and Love and allow that to permeate our activities and interactions.

A Quest For Remembrance
By Shems Heartwell I believe we all are on a quest of remembrance of our true divine nature. Living in a human body under the laws of the earth and experiencing our physical sensations, we get a temporary amnesia of our true nature. What I call spirit is that which is connected to or represents the ever-flowing fountain of existence. When we feel connected to spirit, we experience our true nature, and we sense the interdependent web of life and the unification of all things. People often become disconnected from spirit by overusing the mind. The rational mind primarily sees through the lens of division and separation. Precious awareness and attention get consumed through thinking and interpreting via the rational mind, while heart intelligence and gut knowing are forgotten. Our true intelligence is far vaster than our capacity to think; it is an integrated experience of sensations, feelings and knowing. Each of us is a living system of stimulus and perception that is ultimately evolving and growing through all experiences. A simple practice to deepen connection to spirit is cultivating ‘whole body awareness,’ which is our ability to perceive and have awareness of our bodies as a whole. It is a practice of expanding our inner felt perception of our body and mind as an interconnected, highly functioning intelligence. Whole body awareness could involve feeling your heart beating, your blood pulsing, the tingling in your hands, and your breath flowing in and out, while simultaneously being aware of the sensations on your skin and the environment you are in. When we expand our sensory perception to include our whole body, we awaken more subtle awareness and have greater potential to remember our true nature. Shems Heartwell, LAc, Dipl. Your Sexual Awakening

The healing happens when we live, behave and act from this truth. It happens when we update old beliefs and patterns, and line them up with our goals for a fulfilling sex life. By Stephen Linsteadt The heart has an extraordinary ability to ‘know.’ Experiments by Dean Radin, for example, demonstrate the heart’s ability to cause physiological changes before a significant event occurs, similar to the instinct of animals to take protective measures before an earthquake or a tsunami. If the heart knows an important event is about to happen before it actually happens, then our concept of time and space must be reconsidered. It suggests that we live in a holographic universe, as physicist David Bohm suggested. It puts the heart at the center of ‘knowing,’ connected to an intelligence that lies outside the brain, perhaps in the field of essence. Asking the heart for guidance is easier than we may think. The process of Scalar Heart Connection utilizes synchronicity, similar in that aspect to the I Ching. The difference is that Scalar Heart Connection utilizes number as a matrix of informative statements that identify the specifics. This is accomplished when we tap into trusting our heart and we ask it to show us a number related to the information we need, which is related to the ‘issue’ at hand. The heart will guide us through the ‘obstacle’ as well as the ‘action’ we need to take to modify the resonance pattern into one that is entirely integrated and connected with what our heart truly desires. Connecting to heart consciousness helps us tap into the wellspring of love. When the spirit of love flows through us unimpeded by repressed emotions and negative thinking, we become a channel for spirit to manifest in the world. Then, what we create and who we are becomes a monument to spirit.

Months later you may ask them about it and discover it has been forgotten; something new is the pursuit of the moment. It is helpful to remember that while we are on any quest, once we envision or state our intentions, then release our hold on them, more often than not what we intend will come to fruition. This approach is different from how our society has been conditioned. “No work, no gain” is a common expression. It saddens me at times to silently observe as our society teaches children to be and do better, robbing them of the joy, love and completeness of knowing how perfect we all are, right now. I start my Reiki classes with introductions, asking students to share how they found out about the class. The stories I hear continue to validate my intuitive knowing that the positive healing changes we yearn for inside can only occur when we release them on the outside. One student shared her story of walking along the beach and looking up to heaven asking for help. She had worked hard all her life to feel satisfied and couldn’t find fulfillment. After asking for this assistance, she walked to a nearby store and noticed a bulletin board filled with many flyers. Only one popped out – it was for this class; she knew immediately that she needed to register. Trust, surrender and release your need for control; then dance with the energy of life!
