The Home is where the heart is! This simple yet universal truth is why it’s often such a heart wrenching thing to broach the subject of a Personal Care Facility with a parent that is languishing at home. For a whole host of reasons; concerns about diet and medication, safety and well being and the malaise that can result from isolation and a lack of direction, you have reluctantly concluded that it may be time to begin to consider placement options. The impulse to act brings to mind all that they’ll be giving up; the family home with memories of spouses and children and the myriad events that comprise growth, passage and change or the apartment that has come to represent independence. They often insist that they can manage, forgetting for the moment that they have come to rely on family or friends to get them to appointments, pick up their medications and to keep them supplied with groceries. Still you worry that they’re eating regularly, taking their medication as prescribed or that maybe they’ve fallen or left the stove on. Finally you accept that this impending change is also part of life and that home and hearth with all its attendant history can do little now to ameliorate a situation that offers little hope of improvement. Now all you’ve got to do is convince them!
Timing is everything! You’ve heard the old saying and there is a lot of truth to it. You will know when the time is right but just getting the conversation started with the prospective resident can be a hurdle fraught with an unexpected array of emotions. You believe you are doing the right thing while at the same time you don’t want to feel like you’re dictating to them and leaving them out of the loop of a decision that will have a significant impact on their lives. So yes, timing does matter. It can mean the difference between having sufficient time to do your research and explore your options and having to scramble desperately to find a suitable facility because a hospitalization forced your hand and a decision needs to be made quickly. Timing will allow you the luxury of visiting facilities and making an informed decision based on what you feel will be the best situation for your parent even if it could mean having to wait for a time for a room to open up as opposed to having your selection limited to facilities that can accommodate you immediately upon discharge. And there is another little discussed benefit to making the move at the optimal time. A resident will never have a greater ability to adapt to the new environment than right now. It can ease the initial transition and as I have seen numerous times, it can extend their stay as the years roll by because they’ve mastered the basics and become ‘old hands’ at the day to day requirements of thriving in such a setting. I have helped hundreds of family members navigate this difficult emotional terrain. While acknowledging the difficulties they face, it is my task to turn the focus away from what’s being given up to what’s being gained. In the 25 plus years we’ve been operating Walden III I have witnessed again and again the ‘bounce’ residents get when all the basics are covered and they are eating well, taking their medication as prescribed and seeing the House Physician as soon as the need arises. But its being ‘engaged’ that seems to provide the greatest benefit. There is structure and social opportunities at every turn and the desire to continue to do as much as they can for themselves is contagious. I have always taken it as a given that each and every one of our residents would rather be living at home and I deeply respect that. Most, however, come to accept that it’s no longer possible and that life can be rewarding in many ways here at Walden III.

What to look for when choosing your eye surgeon and surgery center. Despite numerous advertising campaigns whether they tout low pricing, combined experience or convenient locations you owe it to yourself to base the decision on fact and logic. There are significant differences in the caliber of surgeon and surgical technology you’ll receive.

“Caring is What We Do Best” Personal Care Since 1994 Weston Senior Living has been operating Personal Care Centers throughout the Lehigh Valley. These Personal Care Centers offer care to seniors that may need some assistance with their day to day lives but do not need a nursing home. Many services are offered in our centers and are based on the individual needs of each resident. Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Long Term Care for a resident that needs more care then what a Personal Care Center can provide is offered at several of our Centers. These centers offer long and short term care for residents who need rehabilitation services or have serious or persistent health issues. Private or Semi-Private rooms are available with baths. Medicare and Insurances are billed as… provided by the resident. Skilled Nursing involves care provided by trained professional performing services needed due to an injury or illness. This could mean a nurse who must attend to a post–operative wound or intravenous medication, a Physical Therapist who might be working with a resident to regain strength and balance issues, a Speech Therapist who is working with a resident who has lost the ability to speak after a stroke, an Occupational Therapist who is also helping that stroke patient to become as independent as possible when it comes to eating and dressing or attending to personal hygiene. Pharmacy, laboratory and radiology services can be provided in this skilled setting. End of life hospice services are provided to the resident and their family member as well.
