CHANCE OF A LIFETIME (Margaret Iggulden) THE BATTLE OF NEWTON ROAD (Leslie Dunkling)

SEVEN ONE ACT PLAYS (Donn Byrne) MY DEAR AUNT AND A MORNING IN LONDON (Donn Byrne)

THE CANTERBURY TALES (Geoffrey Chaucer)

ALICE IN WONDERLAND (Lewis Carroll)

Helen Davies is sad and lonely when her boyfriend, Tom, goes to Australia without her. But then a friend encourages her to take an exciting new job and Helen sets off on a journey round Europe; an adventurous journey that brings her new confidence, new hope and the chance to find out more about herself – the chance of a lifetime! Newton Road is in an English town. The houses are small but the people aren’t poor. And all the neighbours are friends. They are happy. But one day, a man from the Town Hall comes. He’s going to knock down the houses in Newton Road. He’s going to build a new road. But the people of Newton Road aren’t happy. And they have a battle –a battle with the man from the Town Hall! Tom is the new assistant in a shop that sells old pictures, vases and furniture. He must make a good profit on the things he sells. “The new assistant” describes his first day at work! All the seven plays are full of interesting and funny people (a professor, a bank manager, a film maker) doing unusual things. They are not only great fun to perform but will practise your English too! Jane’s two aunts, Agatha and Mary, quarrelled. They don’t speak to each other. Jane writes letters to each of them. To Aunt Agatha she writes bad things about Aunt Mary, and to Aunt Mary she writes bad things about Aunt Agatha. She wants their money. But one day, something goes wrong. My dear aunt tells the story. Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales has a group of people each telling a story, but our interest is as much in the story-tellers as in the stories. Each of them is a real person. Chaucer introduces them in the Prologue, and then we meet them again between stories. Before long, we feel that we know them personally. We don’t have pardoners and summoners today, but we all know people with characters just like the pardoner and the summoner. The tales are told (in Chaucer’s book) in poetry. Alice in Wonderland was not written as a book for grown-ups. It was for children. It must have been a great surprise. But are the things that happen in Alice really so surprising? We –children and grown-ups– have all been in Wonderland in our dreams. We are not really surprised when Alice changes her size; we have done that in our own dreams. The Cheshire Cat appears and disappears. Why not? The playing-card people are frightening one minute, and “only a pack of cards” the next minute. Of course. We all know the feeling.

A TALE OF TWO CITIES (Charles Dickens)

RIP VAN WINKLE and other stories (Washington Irving)

GREAT BRITISH GHOSTS (Nick McIver)

writes in the opening lines of A Tale of Two Cities as he paints a picture of life in England and France. The year is late 1775, and Jarvis Lorry travels from London to Paris on a secret mission for his employer, Tellson’s Bank. Joining him on his journey is Lucie Manette, a 17-year-old woman who is stunned to learn that her father, Doctor Alexandre Manette, is alive and has recently been released after having been secretly imprisoned in Paris for 18 years. Washington Irving's ‘‘Rip Van Winkle’’ is one of the best-known short stories in American literature. That is to say, the character of Rip Van Winkle, the man who sleeps for twenty years and awakens to a greatly changed world and a long beard, is one of the best-known characters in American popular culture, widely recognized through his many appearances and references in books, movies, cartoons, and advertisements. Britain has always been famous for the ghosts which are said to haunt its old buildings: the castles, theatres and churches. Great British ghosts visits the wild mountains of Scotland, where the ghost of Earl Beardie –dead for over five hundred years— plays cards with the Devil! It visits, too, the Tower of London, scene of so many royal executions, and where famous figures re-live the past. Perhaps you don’t believe in ghosts –yet. Read this book, and you may find that you must believe in them.

RESUMEN

IRELAND (Patrick Tolfree)

DOUBLE FEAR and other stories (John Escott) SHAKESPEARE DETECTIVE and other short stories (S.H. Burton) SCOTLAND (David Hill) AUSTRALIA (Elizabeth Laird) DAVID COPPERFIELD (Charles Dickens)

TREASURE ISLAND (R.L. Stevenson)

JAPANESE RED and other short stories (Lewis Red) THE LOST LOVE and other stories (Jan Carew)

Ireland, the “Emerald Isle” is famous for the green of its countryside and its warm-hearted people. It is a country of strong traditions, a land of poetry and song. The Irish have a strong independent spirit, a distinctive character and a wonderful sense of humour. This book will show you why so many people love to visit Ireland and why so many of the Irish who now live in other countries long to return) “The snow came to the south one day in January, and on that day Greg Mason saw his Double.” So begins “Double fear”, the first of the three stories in this chilling new collection. Greg’s Double is exactly like him. He wears the same clothes, he has the same face, hair and eyes. Only his smile is different; it is not a nice Julie walked across the room and sat down. Her face was white. She wasn’t very well – I could see that. But she was brave and she smiled at me. “What am I going to do, John? He’s trying to hurt me because. I’ve got Cordelia’s part in the play. Why? Who is he?” “I don’t know, Julie, but I believe he’s dangerous.” Scotland is one of the most beautiful parts of Great Britain. It is famous for its mountains, lakes, glens and castles. But it is also famous for its history and traditions, its historical characters, its dancing, the Kilt and the bagpipes and, of course, the Loch Ness Monster. Australia is famous for koalas and kangaroos, sunshine and surfers. But how much do you really know about the world’s largest island? Do you know what a “jumbuck” is? Or a “surfie”? A “barbie”? Come on a tour of Australia and find out! Explore the most beautiful parts of Australia, from Ayers Rock to the Great Barrier Reef, and see for yourself what Australia is really like… Charles Dickens is perhaps Britain’s most famous writer and this is one of his most famous books. It was written in 1850 and follows the sometimes happy, sometimes sad life of David as he grows up. It is filled with the funny and interesting people that he meets and which Dickens so richly describes. “Treasure” island is the island on the map that young Jim Hawkins finds in the wooden chest of Billy Bones, the dead sea captain. The local squire, the doctor and Jim decide to find treasure and they buy a ship. But when they look for a crew to sail the ship, they choose the cruel men who have been following Billy Bones and his map with the fearful “black spot.” The adventures that the true and honest Englishmen have with the pirates, led by the one-legged Long John Silver, have made this exciting story a classic of English Literature. “Lenny sat down in an old armchair and read a book. But he kept an eye on Dr Spinks. The old man walked about the shop. He stopped and looked here and there, but never at the goldfish bowl. The bowl came from Italy, and was Venetian glass, and it could bring a lot of money. Dr. Spinks moved on. For a time he looked at the little red flowers of a house plant. Then he made his way to a small white horse –it stood to the right of the goldfish bowl.” One summer’s day, a young man is walking along a quiet country road. He meets a girl. She takes him to her home in a nearby village. But the village is not on the map, the people there wear strange clothes, and they cook their food in pots over the fire. Can this really be England?

RESUMEN The Great Armando was a strange, brave man. His escape tricks were the most important thing in the world to him. He liked to say that there wasn’t a lock or a prison that he couldn’t escape from. But at that time, he hadn’t met Sheriff Jules Massim, in Detroit. Massim was going to put Armando in straitjacket, and then into a strong bag with a lock. He was going to put that inside a box and drop the box into an ice-cold river in winter. Could Armando escape? The Romans came to Cambridge in the first century A.D. They built the first bridge over the river Cam and gave the town its name. Today, Cambridge is best known for its historic university and this book visits the most famous of the colleges, traces their growth and history, and names their most famous ex–students. But Cambridge is also the centre for the most advanced research in medicine and science, and is a thriving town in its own right. Old meets new in every aspect of life in Cambridge, a fascinating insight into one of Britain’s most fascinating towns. Graham Reed is a professor at the university of Cambridge. His brother is a commanding officer in the British army. How can Professor Reed hope to write interesting letters to his brother? The army in Germany is much more exciting than the quiet life he leads in Cambridge… or is it? One evening, Phileas Fogg is reading a newspaper. “The railway is now complete in India”, he tells his friends. “A person can now go round the world in eighty days.” “It isn’t possible”, his friends say. “You have forgotten bad weather. Perhaps the ships will arrive late, or will catch fire. Trains can be late too”. But Phileas Fogg is an exact man. He makes a bet with his friends. He bets twenty thousand pounds that he can go round the world in eighty days. And he leaves that night for Paris, with his servant Passepartout, and a small bag of clothes… 1000 years ago, Oxford was a rich town. There were a lot of churchmen in the city. Some churchmen gave lessons in churches, and students came to Oxford from other parts of Britain and form Europe. Slowly, a university began to grow, and it grew richer and stronger. Oxford is about history, but it is also about today. It meets some students and gives you a taste of life –the fun and the hard work- at one of Britain’s most famous universities.

TÍTULO (AUTOR) THE DEATH OF KAREN SILKWOOD (Joyce Hannam)

FRANKENSTEIN (Mary Shelley)

MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS (Tim Vicary)

THE BRONTË STORY (Tim Vicary)

RESUMEN This is the story of Karen Silkwood. It begins with her death. Why does her story begin where it should end? Certain people wanted her death to be an ending. Why? What were they afraid of? Karen Silkwood had something to tell us, and she believed that it was important. Why didn’t she live to tell us? Will we ever know what really happened? The questions go on and on, but there are no answers. This is a true story. It happened in Oklahoma, USA, where Karen Silkwood lived and worked… and died. Victor Frankenstein thinks he has found the secret of life. He takes parts from dead people and builds a new “man”. But this monster is so big and frightening that everyone runs away from him –even Frankenstein himself! The monster is like an enormous baby who needs love. But nobody gives him love, and soon he learns to hate. And, because he is so strong, the next thing he learns is how to kill… England and Scotland in the 1500s. Two famous queens –Mary, the Queen of Scots, and Elizabeth I, the Protestant Queen of England. It was an exciting and a dangerous time to be alive, and to be a queen. Mary was Queen of Scotland when she was one week old. At sixteen, she was also Queen of France. She was tall and beautiful, with red-gold hair. Many men loved her and died for her. But she also had many enemies –men who said: “The death of Mary is the life of Elizabeth.” On a September day in 1821, in the church of a Yorkshire village, a man and six children stood around a grave. They were burying a woman: the man’s wife, the children’s mother. The children were all very young, and within a few years the two oldest were dead, too. Close to the wild beauty of the Yorkshire moors, the father brought up his young family. Who had heard of the Brontës of Haworth, then? Branwell died while he has still a young man, but the three sisters who were left had an extraordinary gift. They could write marvellous stories – Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall… But Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë did not live to grow old or to enjoy their fame. Only their father was left, alone with his memories.

They killed and ate the king’s deer, and stole from the rich. King Richard, who ruled then, was always fighting in other countries. So his brother, John, ruled England for him. He gets a title of honour when he takes the fleet of Blefuscu out of the water. But when he makes water on the emperor's palace it's decided he should die. But he escapes. On his second voyage he gets into a great storm and comes in a land of giants (12 times as big as he is). He is found by a farmer. Who takes him to a market and to the metropolis? GULLIVER´S TRAVELS (Jonathan Swift)

THE THREE MUSKETEERS (Alexandre Dumas)

THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY (Oscar Wilde)

“When we are happy, we are always good, “ says Lord Henry, “but when we are good, we are not always happy.” Lord Henry’s lazy, clever words lead the young Dorian Gray into a world where it is better to be beautiful than to be good; a world where anything can be forgiven –even murder- if it can make people laugh at a dinner party.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND (Lewis Carroll)

Alice in Wonderland was not written as a book for grown-ups. It was for children. It must have been a great surprise. But are the things that happen in Alice really so surprising? We –children and grown-ups– have all been in Wonderland in our dreams. We are not really surprised when Alice changes her size; we have done that in our own dreams. The Cheshire Cat appears and disappears. Why not? The playing-card people are frightening one minute, and “only a pack of cards” the next minute. Of course, we all know the feeling.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND (Lewis Carroll)

The same as above.

THE CANTERBURY TALES (Geoffrey Chaucer)

Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales has a group of people each telling a story, but our interest is as much in the story-tellers as in the stories. Each of them is a real person. Chaucer introduces them in the Prologue, and then we meet them again between stories. Before long, we feel that we know them personally. We don’t have pardoners and summoners today, but we all know people with characters just like the pardoner and the summoner. The Tales are told (in Chaucer’s book) in poetry

MARIE CURIE (Beverley Birch)

Marie Curie was the brilliant scientist who discovered radium nearly a hundred years ago. It was a discovery that changed the world: doctors were later able to help people with cancer and scientists came to know more about the atom. This book tells the story of her life of struggle, success and disaster, and of her devotion to her work which continues to help millions of people throughout the world.

MARTIN LUTHER KING (Valerie Schloredt & Pam Brown)

Martin Luther King was the leader of the campaign for black civil rights in the USA in the 1950s and 1960s. This book tells the story of the peaceful demonstrations he held in the southern states demanding equal rights for blacks. He faced enormous opposition but his non-violent struggle for freedom won changes for the blacks of America and opened the eyes of the world to the injustice of racial discrimination

THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS (Kenneth Grahame)

A linked series of animal tales by Kenneth Grahame, considered a classic of English children’s literature. The book was begun as a series of bedtime stories for Grahame’s son and was published in 1908. The tales relate the adventures of four animal friends and neighbours in he English countryside Mole, Rat, Toad (of Toad Hill), and Badger. Although the animals converse and behave like humans, each creature also retains its distinctive animal habits. Review by child: “My mom made me read it. She always picks the worst books! Surprisingly, after the first 10 pages, I couldn’t put it down. This group of friends is more than the story of adventure. It’s the story of them.”

BLACK BEAUTY (Anna Sewell)

ALICE IN WONDERLAND (Lewis Carroll)

Kidnapped and cheated out of his inheritance, young David Balfour falls in with a Jacobite adventurer, Alan Breck Stewart. Falsely accused of murder, they must flee across the Highlands, evading the redcoats. Sally Thompson is a schoolgirl and she is learning to ski. Ski? The rain in winter is cold, the ski mat that she falls on is hard, and Brenda Moore always laughs at her at school. But Sally is brave, and one day her skiing helps a friend … [“Here we go!” said Bertie, beginning to run. When he reached the car he could hardly believe his eyes. It was a completely new Rolls Royce, with enough room in if for eight people. The man must be worth a million pounds, Bertie thought, and all from diamonds! He looked through the windows. There were papers Iying on the back seat, but he could not read what was on them. He tried the doors. Three of them were locked. But the fourth was not. “Ah!” he cried, pulling it open. At the same time he felt a hand on his arm, and an angry voice said right in his ear, “And what do you think you’re doing?”] This extract from The Empty Street is one of the eight short stories of crime and detection in Catch a Thief. This is the story of the life and adventures of a beautiful horse: Black Beauty. Black Beauty works hard for all his owners, who are sometimes cruel, sometimes kind; sometimes rich, sometimes poor. Will he ever find true happiness? Alice in Wonderland was not written as a book for grown-ups. It was for children. It must have been a great surprise. But are the things that happen in Alice really so surprising? We –children and grown-ups– have all been in Wonderland in our dreams. We are not really surprised when Alice changes her size; we have done that in our own dreams. The Cheshire Cat appears and disappears. Why not? On the same day two boys are born: the pauper Tom and prince Edvard. As a kid, Tom sneaks into the palace garden and meet the prince. They change clothes with each other but the guards discover them and throw out the prince, since they are almost identical. Nobody believes them when they try to tell the truth. Soon after, the old king dies and the prince will inherit the throne Marcel is a French mouse, and a very fine detective. He and his friend, Céline, are on holiday in Los Angeles. They’re staying at the home of Arnold Waldman, a famous film director. But on the first night of their holiday, Arnold’s daughter is kidnapped … Helen Davies is sad and lonely when her boyfriend, Tom, goes to Australia without her. But then a friend encourages her to take an exciting new job and Helen sets off on a journey round Europe; an adventurous journey that brings her new confidence, new hope and the chance to find out more about herself – the chance of a lifetime! In Eden City the sun always shines, people never grow old and everyone is happy. For BZXY741, a young student, life seems perfect. But one day he meets Eve, a girl who is different from the rest, a girl who shows him that there is another world … He is not beautiful. His mother does not want him, children run away from him. People laugh at him, and call him “The Elephant Man.” Then someone speaks to him –and listens to him! At the age of 27, Joseph Merrick finds a friend for the first time in his life. This is a true and tragic story. It is now also a famous film. It is 1880, in the Opera House in Paris. Everybody is talking about the Phantom of the Opera, the ghost that lives somewhere under the Opera House. The Phantom is a man in black clothes. He is a head without a head; he is a head without a body. He has a yellow face, he has no nose, and he has black holes for eyes. Everybody is afraid of the phantom –the singers, the dancers, the directors, the stage workers … But who has actually, seen him? Mr James Conway wants to make money. He wants to build new houses and shops –and he wants to build them on an old graveyard, on the island of Haiti. There is only one old man who still visits the graveyard; and Mr Conway is not afraid of one old man. But the old man has friends –friends in the graveyard, friends who lie dead, under the ground. And when Mr Conway starts to build his houses, he makes the terrible mistake of disturbing the sleep of the dead! When a large plane is hijacked, the Prime Minister looks at the list of passengers and suddenly becomes very, very frightened. There is a name on the list that the Prime Minister knows very well –too well. There is someone on that plane who will soon be dead –if the hijackers can find out who he is! And there isn’t much time. One man lies dead on the runway. In a few minutes the hijackers will use their guns again. And the Prime Minister knows who they are going to kill. “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,” Dickens writes in the opening lines of A Tale of Two Cities as he paints a picture of life in England and France. The year is late 1775, and Jarvis Lorry travels from London to Paris on a secret mission for his employer, Tellson’s Bank. Joining him on his journey is Lucie Manette, a 17year-old woman who is stunned to learn that her father, Doctor Alexandre Manette, is alive and has recently been released after having been secretly imprisoned in Paris for 18 years.

Li Sun is living happily in Blue Moon Valley, but her grandmother thinks it is time for her to go to the big city and work in her uncle’s circus. The Emperor’s visit to the circus changes Li Sun’s life, and she has to make some difficult decisions. On the same day two boys are born: the pauper Tom and prince Edvard. As a kid, Tom sneaks into the palace garden and meet the prince. They change clothes with each other but the guards discover them and throw out the prince, since they are almost identical. Nobody believes them when they try to tell the truth. Soon after, the old king dies and the prince will inherit the throne. A baby is left in the jungle. He will be adopted by a pack of wolves and will learn the laws of the jungle. From Scotland to Cornwall, Britain is full of customs and traditions. A lot of them have very long histories. Some are funny and some are strange. But they’re all interesting. Some British customs and traditions are famous all over the world. Bowler hats, drinking tea and talking about the weather, for example. But who was Guy Fawkes? Is the Queen the only person in Britain with two birthdays? This book on British customs and traditions will tell you. What is a monster? What is a loch? This book answers your questions. Here you can read the real story of Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster. Scientists think “she” is a creature from the past, but they cannot give us all the answers. This book has photographs and newspaper stories. In Scotland you can buy books, pictures and games about the monster, but is the monster real? What do you think? On Christmas Eve, Suzanne and her mother are flying from Lima back to their home in Pucallpa. But suddenly there is a storm and the plane crashes. Suzanne’s mother is dead and Suzanne is lost and alone in the South American jungle. This is the true story of ten dangerous days in the jungle and of a girl’s struggle to stay alive. Pete and Carla are both students at the University of Bath. One day in summer they are walking round the city and decide to look at some very old coins and stamps in a shop. Pete wants to buy some, but they are too expensive. Later that afternoon the coins are missing from the shop –and the shopkeeper wants to find Pete… Richard Walton is in trouble again. He has lost his job, and he has borrowed money from his sister, Jennifer – again. And now he has disappeared. Jennifer is looking for him, and so are the police. They both have some questions that they want to ask him. How did he lose his job? Why did he fly to Frankfurt? Who gave his girlfriend those very expensive gold earrings? Only Richard can answer these questions. But nobody can find Richard. Of course. Six short stories about everyday life in Ireland in the early nineteen hundreds –about families, growing up, love and death in the city of Dublin. James Joyce, one of Ireland’s most famous writers, paints a clever and understanding picture of the city and its people. It is April 1st. It is April Fool’s Day. Joe Selby wants to play a joke on Puddleton, his village. Why is he digging a hole in his garden? Why isn’t he working on his farm? Mr ‘Nosey’ Parker thinks he knows the answers to there questions. By 10 o’clock at night, Joe has shown that ‘Nosey’ and all the people in the village are fools! Why does Joe Carter’s scientist father move his satellite dish in the middle of the night? Why does he disappear the next day? Will Joe’s mother arrive safely in Australia? Joe and his friends follow Professor Carter to Dead Man’s Island. But can they stop the war in space? Will they beat the Countdown to Midnight? The human mind is a dark, bottomless pit, and sometimes it works in strange and frightening ways. That sound in the night… is it a door banging in the wind, or a murdered man knocking inside his coffin? The face in the mirror … is it yours, or the face of someone standing behind you, who is never there when you turn round? England and Scotland in the 1500s. Two famous queens – Mary, the Queen of Scots, and Elizabeth I, the Protestant Queen of England. It was an exciting and a dangerous time to be alive, and to be a queen. Mary was Queen of Scotland when she was one week old. At sixteen, she was also Queen of France. She was tall and beautiful, with red-gold hair. Many men loved her and died for her. But she also had many enemies – men who said: ‘The death of Mary is the life of Elizabeth.’ In the mountains of Transylvania there stands a castle. It is the home of Count Dracula – a dark, lonely place, and at night the wolves howl around the walls. In the year 1875 Jonathan Harker comes from England to do business with the Count. But Jonathan does not feel comfortable at Castle Dracula. Strange things happen at night, and very soon, he begins to feel afraid. And he is right to be afraid, because Count Dracula is one of the Un-Dead – a vampire that drinks the blood of living people … Who invented the personal stereo? How much water do you need to make a car? How do you make a paper glider? Is Europe really smaller than we think? How tall was the tallest man? You’ll find out the answers to these questions, and much more, as you read Life on Earth and other pieces. What’s the Breakfast Club? How logically can you think? What’s it like living in a horse-drawn caravan? How do you make real American cookies? Can elephants really paint? You’ll find out the answers to these questions, and much more, as you read Hidden Pictures and other pieces. Billy and Rox are staying with their grandmother in Brighton. They dream of having expensive new bikes, but where will they find the money? Gran has a plan. The only things they need are a camera, a bit of luck – and the Queen of England! Gabriel loves Silvia and is very disappointed when she chooses to go out with rich, handsome Marco instead of him. But that evening a terrible earthquake strikes the town and their lives are changed for ever…

Something may be waiting for you in the dark… Pete and Carla are both students at the University of Bath. One day in summer they are walking round the city and decide to look at some very old coins and stamps in a shop. Pete wants to buy some, but they are too expensive. Late that afternoon the coins are missing from the shop – and the shopkeeper wants to find Pete … One evening, Phileas Fogg is reading a newspaper. And he leaves that night for Paris, with his servant Passepartout, and a small bag of clothes … Sea Brid Cottage is the ideal place for a holiday. That’s what Mrs Dale and her children think when they first arrive. But the cottage has a sad history. What are the noises they hear at night? Who is the mysterious figure in the garden? And who is the boy from yesterday? The story of the madman, Rafael, and his gold ring is a story of murder, mystery and love. Many people know part of Rafael’s story, but no one knows the whole truth. One man tries to find out what really happened … Nicky has just got off the plane at New York to stay with his Aunt Carrie. But at once things start to go wrong… Soon Nicky finds that he is being taken on a terrifying tour of New York by a group of young people that he doesn’t even know. And the police are looking for him because they think he is a thief! Nicky is lost, alone and very scared. He has got to find Aunt Carrie before the police find him … When Maria discovers Harriet Beecham’s body in the river, she runs to tell the police. But first she takes something, a necklace. She knows that this is wrong, but she doesn’t realise that other people also want the necklace. And they will do anything to find it. When Richard Hannay’s neighbour. Scudder, tells him a secret, an exciting adventure begins. One evening Hannay knows that his own life is in danger. He has to live if he is going to save his country. But who are his enemies? What are they trying to do? And what did Scudder mean when he wrote the words “thirty-nine steps” in his secret notebook? Hannay needs to find the answers to these questions quickly. But his enemies are very dangerous and clever men who are prepared to kill anyone. It is 1800 and Jenny and Sam Tinker arrive in the United States of America. They have to work very hard on a farm, but Jenny’s friendship with the Indian girl, Blue Sky, leads the Thinkers to a better life.

TÍTULO (AUTOR) MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS (Tim Vicary)

THE WITCHES OF PENDLE (Rowina Akinyemi)

THE SKY’S THE LIMIT (Norman Whitney)

RESUMEN England and Scotland in the 1500s. Two famous queens – Mary, the Catholic Queen of Scots, and Elizabeth I, the Protestant Queen of England. It was an exciting and a dangerous time to be alive, and to be a queen. Mary was Queen of Scotland when she was one week old. At sixteen, she was also Queen of France. She was tall and beautiful, with red-gold hair. Many men loved her and died for her. But she also had many enemies – men who said: “The death of Mary is the life of Elizabeth.” Witches are dangerous. They can kill you with a look, or a word. They can send their friend the Devil after you in the shape of a dog or a cat. They can make a clay picture of you, then break it … and a few weeks later you are dead. Today, of course, most people don’t believe in witches. But in 1612 everybody was afraid of them. Young Jennet Device in Lancashire knew a lot about them because she lived with the Witches of Pendle. They were her family … Max worked for a large company – Friendship Services International. THE MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE (Edgar Allan Poe)

RESUMEN Sally’s always running – and she has her phone with her all the time: at home, on the train, at work, at lunchtime and at the shops. But then one afternoon suddenly she has a different phone … and it changes her life. When Tug wakes up, he is not in his own bedroom at home. The door is locked and there are bars across the window. Loud music hammers through the house and through his head. Then a woman comes in and says that she is his mother, but Tug knows that she is not… Outside, Jinny stares through the trees at the lonely house on the hill. She hears strange noises, but she turns away. After all, it’s none of her business… It is the year 2522, and the planet Earth is dying. The Artificial Ozone Layer is only 300 years old, but it is breaking up fast. Now the sun is burning down on Earth with a wide fire. There is no water. .. In a colony under the moon, people wait for news – news from home, news from the planet Earth. And in a spaceship high above Earth, a young man watches numbers on a computer screen. The numbers tell a story, and the young man is afraid. The planet Earth is burning… The room was on the 4 th floor, and the door was locked – with the key on the inside. The windows were closed and fastened – on the inside. The chimney was too narrow for a cat to get through. So how did the murderer escape? And whose were the two angry voices heard by the neighbours as they ran up the stairs? Nobody in Paris could find any answers to this mystery.

DEEP TROUBLE (Lesley Thompson) RIP VAN WINKLE – THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW (Washington Irving) THE TURN OF THE SCREW (Henry James) LORD ARTHUR SAVILE’S CRIME and other stories (Oscar Wilde) GREAT MYSTERIES OF OUR WORLD (Gina D B Clemen)

Molly Clarkson is having her 50 th birthday party. She is rich, but she’s having a small party – only four people. Four people, however, who all need the same thing: they need her money. She will not give them the money, so they are waiting for her to die. And there are other people who are also waiting for her to die. But one person can’t wait. And so, on her fiftieth birthday, Molly Clarkson is going to die. When a large plane is hijacked, the PM looks at the list of passengers and suddenly becomes very very frightened. There is a name on the list that the PM knows well. There is someone on that plane who will soon be dead – if the hijackers can find out who he is! And there isn’t much time. One man lies dead on the runway. In a few minutes the hijackers will use their guns again. And the PM knows who they are going to kill. Amy and Matt are bored. They don’t want to study for their exams – they want to have a good time. So they drive to the marina at West Palm Beach, and Matt jumps onto one of the boats. ‘We can go anywhere!’ he jokes. But when the owners of the boat come back and find them, Amy and Matt are in deep trouble. Matt is a good swimmer and enjoys scuba-diving, but now he must dive for their lives. In the first of these stories, Rip Van Winkle sleeps for over 20 years, and then wakes up to a world that he no longer understands. In the other story, Ichabod Crane, the school teacher, meets a headless rider in the middle of a dark night. A young woman arrives at a large country house. Her job is to look after the two children who live there, but she soon discovers that there is something very strange about both the house and the children. The longer she stays, the more she feels that the two children are in danger – or is it that the children are the danger, and the person in danger is herself? At Lady Windermere’s party a famous palm reader tells Lord Arthur Savile that he will commit a murder. But will the handsome young nobleman become an assassin or will he marry Sybil, his beautiful fiancée? Find out about Lady Alroy’s mysterious ways in “THE SPHINX WITHOUT A SECRET” and discover how it pays to be nice to the poor in “THE MODEL MILLIONAIRE”. Some of the world’s most puzzling mysteries remain unsolved. Do you think a fast sports-car can be evil and kill its drivers? Would you wear a splendid diamond that brings bad luck? Can a 3,300-year-old Egyptian curse still exist? Which of Nostradamus’ prophecies were true? Why was the Mary Celeste a ghost ship?

LIFE EXCHANGE (Jenny Dooley)

The burned man turned towards his burned friend on the other trolley. He put his hand onto his friend’s hand. “J … a … k …. e!” But that was his last word. He died, with his hand in the hand of his friend. “Can you hear me? Jake, did you say?” The nurse lifted the dead man’s hand away from his friend’s and laid it across his chest.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL (Charles Dickens)

Ebenezer Scrooge is rich but he is a mean, miserable old man with no friends. It is Christmas Eve but he’s still in his office counting his money. He doesn’t like Christmas – it costs too much! Later that night in his bedroom, Scrooge is visited by three ghosts. They show Scrooge scenes from his life. They show him his sad childhood. They show him the present, Christmas Eve in Victorian England where both rich and poor are enjoying Christmas with family and friends. They show him a frightening, lonely future. In this famous story by Charles Dickens, Christmas brings a surprising change in Ebenezer Scrooge. But is it good or bad?

MISSING IN CORNWALL (Alessandra Brunetti & Janet Harmer)

THE HAUNTED BOOMERANG (Janet Harmer)

THE JUST SO STORIES (Rudyard Kipling)

Sam King is a lucky girl. She lives in a comfortable cottage, she attends a nice school and her father is a famous rock star. When the school year begins, she makes friends with a new student named Keith, who helps her with her homework. But Sam’s luck turns bad during the school trip to Land’s End. Alone for a moment near the empty school bus, she falls into the hands of two strangers, who then demand a high ransom from Sam’s father. Keith believes he can help the police find Sam and rescue her from the kidnappers. During their Christmas holidays in the “red heart” of Australia, Penny and Bob set out to look for a very special boomerang that is missing from an Aboriginal museum near Ayers Rock. The situation gets serious and they get lost in the unfriendly Australian bush. There they meet Sel, a young Aborigine, and his grandfather who gives them clues about the location of the boomerang. From then on their cultural holiday turns into an exciting adventure! Kipling’s popular stories about the “evolution” of some of the stranger species of animals around the world have fascinated generations of children. This colourful simplified version re-tells these amusing stories in language which is accessible to early learners of English.
