How ERP Software Revolutionized Modern Business Looking back now, it’s hard to believe that computers only became commonly used in business a few short decades ago. Back then, in the 1980s, PCs were used primarily for word processing and some simple accounting and spreadsheet functions. But as that decade continued, use of PCs became more and more commonplace. Software developers at that time recognized the need for modules that would specifically address the timeconsuming, error-prone tasks involved in accounting. MCBA was one of the earliest companies to introduce these modules, followed shortly thereafter by Macola Software. In the 1990s, large-scale computer systems began to emerge. It was then that companies began to rely on computers to handle virtually every aspect of their business. As use of computer systems continued to expand, so did the development efforts of software engineers. It was during this decade that developers used those early accounting modules as a basis for some of the first ERP (enterprise resource planning) software products. This product gave businesses the ability to improve how disparate software modules used in different departments communicated back and forth. Once again, Macola led the charge by introducing one of the first true ERP software products in the 1990s. When Macola was purchased by Exact Software in 2001, their ERP product became known as Macola ES. The company continued to expand their line by offering other products – such as Macola Progression – which were specifically designed for certain business applications. A plethora of other companies followed suit, and today the Macola ES and Macola Progression products are joined in the marketplace by a large number of other ERP products intended for use by companies of all sizes and in a variety of industries. In retrospect, it seems inevitable that ERP software came to be. As our companies became more and more reliant on computers to perform our everyday business functions, the need for a comprehensive business management software product became obvious. Today, ERP software coordinates virtually every aspect of day-to-day commerce, including: • Accounts receivable/accounts payable • Purchasing • Product development • Inventory management • Marketing and sales • Manufacturing

• Human resources While there’s no doubt that ERP software has, in fact, revolutionized modern business practices, it was actually the computer itself that initiated the revolution. Little did business managers know back in the 1980s, when personal computers first emerged in companies throughout the U.S. and around the world, how much our day-to-day business tasks would be transformed by technology. It’s hard to imagine now, in the 21st century, how we ever got along without the computer technology that we rely on so much each and every day. And the revolution is far from over, as ERP software products continue to evolve and improve over time.
