(304-642-2351) 2 3 Elkins / Randolph County A s the Tygart River trickles from its birthplace in Pocahontas and winds its way down the fertile Randolph County valley following US Route 219, it gains size and greets Elkins, the historic county seat. Known as one of the “28th Best Small Arts Town in America,” downtown Elkins hosts a potpourri of shops offering unusual gifts and handcrafted items made by local artists. Elkins is the western Welcome Center into the Mountain Highlands region, easily accessible via interstate corridor from I-79 and is the commercial outpost of the southern region. Heritage Born from the philanthropy of two mercantile families of the same name at the turn of the century, Davis & Elkins College, a four-year liberal arts institution, brings to Elkins a cultural flavor unique to the region. The Augusta Heritage Center preserves Appalachian heritage with over 100 one-week courses offered each year in crafts, dance, folklore and music. Ride the Train, See the Show The last passenger train pulled into Elkns and the Elkins Railroad Depot in 1959. Since then the railroad tracks have been silent. Today, passengers can again board at the restored downtown depot just as they did many decades ago. The Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroad offers five mountain rail adventures into the nearby countryside, plus many event rides and dinner trains. After a rail excursion, attend a Branson-style live family music, comedy and variety show at the 525-seat American Mountain Theatre, located adjacent to the Depot. The theater also offers American history shows and special Gospel / Bluegrass concerts. New this year is the Gandy Dancer Theatre. Take in a live mountain music show while sitting down to a chicken dinner. Recreation in the National Forest The Monongahela National Forest wilderness areas are reserved for soft-impact hiking and backpacking, watching wildlife and birding. Trout fishing in county streams and rivers is a favorite past-time in spring and fall; hunting in early winter. Canaan Valley, at 3,200 feet elevation and hugged by 4,200-feet high mountains, is home to two model state parks, two ski areas and the nation’s 500th wildlife refuge. Resort Adventures The Blackwater River meanders slowly through Canaan Valley, the year-round vacation resort area of the northern highlands. In winter Canaan Valley Resort and Timberline Four Season Resort open their slopes for skiing, snowboarding and tubing. In spring, summer and fall, mountain biking, hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, and exploring the Monongahela National Forest lands and Dolly Sods Scenic Area take precedence. Families gravitate to Canaan Valley Resort State Park and Blackwater Falls State Park and their full schedule of warm-weather activities. Swimming, tennis, interpretive nature walks, and evening events fill leisure-time hours. Golfers head for the Canaan Valley 18-hole championship golf course. Great Outdoors After plummeting over Blackwater Falls into the Blackwater Canyon, the Blackwater River makes its way to the Dry Fork. Dry Fork and Shavers Fork both empty into the Cheat River at Parsons, the county seat. All these waters team with catches of trout anglers dream about. Spring rains churn the Cheat into Class II-IV rapids, exhilarating to rafters and kayakers. State Route 93 from nearby Davis leads northeast to Mt. Storm Lake, the man-made lake sitting atop the Allegheny Plateau that attracts scuba divers and those who enjoy swimming in the waters kept constantly warm by Virginia Electric Power. Traveler Information seneca rocks Pendleton / Grant Counties N ine hundred feet of Tuscarora sandstone lays vigil over a landscape of agricultural valleys, fish-filled rivers and outrageous outcroppings that jut from the surrounding mountaintops. Great Outdoors Rock climbers come from around the world to challenge the craggy face of Seneca Rocks. Beginners seek out the area climbing guides or try the unique self-belayed climbing adventure at Nelson Rocks Outdoor Center located near Circleville. The Center also offers a new Canopy Tour this year. Explore our forests from a unique angle — from the tree tops! Seneca Rocks is also the home of the Monongahela National Forest’s Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area and the Seneca Rocks Discovery Center where regional information can be easily obtained. Pendleton County is the birthing ground of the great Potomac. All three rivers – the North Fork and the South Fork of the South Branch, and the South Branch – meander downward from the cedar-spotted highlands south of historic Franklin and Brandywine. These waters wind quietly through beautifully-farmed valleys on their way to Grant County where they converge to become the full-fledged South Branch, renowned for its float trips and angling for bass. Cave Country Rocks on top, caves underneath, this area is famous for its caving and commercial caverns — Seneca Caverns on Rt. 33 and Smoke Hole Caverns to the north on Rt. 28, south of Petersburg, offer tours, rain or shine. The barren outcroppings of Seneca Rocks and North Mountain are signatures of this rugged, forested area. Hunting and fishing take first place, in season. Pendleton County is home of Spruce Knob, the highest point in West Virginia. The views on a clear day from the overlook at Spruce Knob cannot be compared! A network of hiking, biking and riding trails criss-cross through this national recreation area, making it a haven for outdoor adventure seekers. Grant / Hardy / Hampshire / Mineral Counties F lying eagles, vintage passenger trains and historic towns color the beautiful, green South Branch Valley. It's the land of the Potomac and the place where George Washington slept. The North Fork of the South Branch follows State Route 28/Highland Trace 55 and empties into the South Branch of the Potomac west of Petersburg, county seat of Grant. The South Branch continues into Hardy County, passing through the historic county seat of Moorefield, before disappearing into the impenetrable “Trough” . . . a unique geological area best explored by canoe or by train! It then makes it way into Hampshire Country and to the great Potomac. Great Outdoors Trophy bass and lazy canoe trips color the South Branch. Anglers of all ages learn here and make records here. Outfitters specialize in magical river trips of choice. Whether your water pleasure be canoeing, kayaking, rafting or running in duckies, there are custom trips available, designed by local outfitters. Take time to explore the Smoke Hole Canyon by canoe or tube around Big Bend. Heritage The sister towns of Petersburg and Moorefield sit in the center of the picturesque South Branch Valley characterized by historic farms and mansions and paralleled by misty, blue mountain ridges. The Valley is a repository of Civil War history.
