Services Found at GateWay Central Advisement
Student IDs
One of the first things you should do before registering for classes is make an appointment to meet with an advisor. The GateWay advisors assist students with the following: • Exploration of educational and life goals • Academic and occupational programs • Selection and sequencing of courses • University transfer options • Information on campus resources and services
All new students are required to take placement tests for Math, English and Reading in the Testing Center prior to an advisement visit. Test results and any transcripts or grade reports of prior coursework along with any information from past advisement sessions should be brought to advisement every visit. Study your degree requirements in the General Catalog, become familiar with the class schedule and, if possible, make a list of courses you wish to take. The advisor will assist you in the formation of your educational plan. It is essential that you be an active participant in planning your education because the ultimate responsibility for making decision about life goals and educational plans rests with you. Finding Money to Finance College You’ve seen an advisor and you have your classes. How are you going to pay for it all? You want to go to college so you can make a lot of money; however, you don’t have a lot of money, so you think you can’t go to college. Don’t believe it. You have just met the main requirements for getting federal student aid, so read on.
Federal Pell Grants
Direct Loan Program
Unlike loans, Pell Grants do not have to be paid back as long as the student attends college. The amount awarded is based on financial need and the student’s status as a full- or part-time student.
The government’s Direct Loan Program offers both subsidized and unsubsidized student loans.
What is Financial Aid?
Federally Funded Campus-Based Aid Programs
Student financial aid refers to funding intended to help students pay educational expenses at a college, university or private school. Nearly 70% of student financial aid is provided by the U.S. Department of Education’s Federal Student Aid program (around $70 billion every year). Visit: www.gatewaycc.edu/ Pay/Financial/Aid

Campus-based assistance like the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Leveraging Educational Assistance Program, Federal Work-Study and Federal Perkins Loan programs are awarded based on financial need, other aid the student receives and the total availability of funds at the school. This aid is awarded on a “first come, first serve” basis, so filing early in the spring for the up coming academic year is advised. Note: Getting one form of aid does not make you ineligible for others. Many students get a “package” mixing all three types of financial aid— scholarships, grants and loans.

Subsidized loans are awarded to students with financial need. All interest on subsidized loans is paid by the government while the student is actually enrolled at least half time and during certain periods, such as grace and deferment. Unsubsidized loans are available regardless of financial need. The student must pay all interest on unsubsidized loans. The PLUS program offers unsubsidized loans to parents of dependent students. The parents must pay all interest on PLUS loans. Federal loans offer a great deal of flexibility and benefits for student borrowers. Amounts that can be borrowed, repayment options, and interest rates vary greatly and can be modified during the term of the loan.

Eligibility Requirements for Student Aid Eligibility for federal student aid is determined on the basis of financial need and on several other factors. In order to be eligible for aid, you must: • have financial need (except for certain loans); • have a high school diploma, a General Education Development (GED) certificate or pass a test approved by the U.S. Department of Education; be working toward a degree or certificate; • be enrolled in an eligible program; be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen; have a valid Social Security Number; register with the Selective Service if required; and maintain satisfactory academic progress once in school.
Process To apply for student financial aid from the federal government, you will need to fill out and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The form can be found at www.fafsa.ed.gov which will take you through every step of the process and provides all the information you need to apply for federal student aid. There is no charge for submitting this form.
If any additional documentation is needed GateWay will contact you via your my.maricopa.edu stundet center. Once complete, your application will be awarded and you will be notified of your award. Scholarship Assistance Scholarships are the ideal form of student aid and are often considered “gift” aid as they never have to be repaid and are an excellent way to fill the gap between your need and the college financial aid package. GateWay offers a number of institutional, Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) foundation and private scholarships throughout the year. The Children’s Learning Center The Children’s Learning Center is located on the north end of campus on the west side of the CHCE building. Fall, Spring and Summer Semesters Monday - Friday 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Intercession care will be available for specified weeks.
We welcome children ages 2-12 (toddlers must be fully potty trained). In the morning hours we offer preschool classes for children ages 2-pre K. The curriculum is developed around weekly themes and is aligned with the Arizona Department of Education’s Early Learning Standards.
School age children are accepted after 2:30 p.m. for fall and spring semesters. Camp Gecko is a school-age program that is offered during the summer semesters. For more information, call the Children’s Learning Center at (602) 286-8130.

Adult Re-Entry Whether students attend class to pursue a degree or simply to acquire new skills, our services provide students with a welcoming and supportive environment to facilitate transitions that adults face when returning to college. EMPOWER Program The EMPOWER Program is a learning community for adults in transition, providing an opportunity to attend two integrated classes: • Career & Personal Development • Microsoft Office 2007
The Career and Personal Development course guides the student through a series of exercises to promote self-awareness, with a focus on career and life planning and dealing with change. The course is designed to introduce students to the basic concepts of Mircosoft Office, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access. Student Success Center The Student Success Center at GateWay is located in the GateWay Central area of the South building. Our Student Success Coordinator, Jennifer Bradley, works with students who are having trouble navigating the process of getting into and successfully completing college. Students often work with our Student Success Coordinator on issues with their classes, questions about financial aid, working out a time management schedule and ways to balance their “school” life with their “real” life. Connecting Disabled Students with the Tools for Student Success The Disability Resources and Services Department provides information and resources for students with a documented disability. Services include advisement, interpreters for the deaf, note takers, test reading and adaptive equipment. The Americans with Disabilities Act requires an institution of higher education to provide reasonable accommodations to a qualified individual with a documented disability, provided that the accommodation does not create an undue hardship. Some examples of reasonable accommodations include the following:

The GateWay Honors Program GateWay encourages student scholars to challenge themselves further through the various honors programs offered: The Honors Experience, The Honors Program and Phi Theta Kappa. Each of these programs gives students the opportunity to reach beyond expectations and promotes the advancement of learning at a higher level.
Participation in the Honors Experience results in: • Honors (HO) designation on your academic transcript next to all applicable courses • Opportunities to qualify for spring semester scholarships • Fee waivers Enrolled Fee Waived Credit Hours

The Honors Experience is a great place to start for those wishing to test their academic strength. Through this program, students can convert one or more classes to an Honors (HO) class by completing a special project or taking HUM 190 (1 credit).
6 - 8.......................$163
To be eligible to convert a class students must have completed 12 credit hours within the Maricopa Community Colleges and achieved a GPA of 3.25 or higher, or be a President’s Scholarship recipient. In order to remain an Honors student, you must maintain a GPA of 3.25.
9 - 11.....................$244 12+........................$325
The Honors Program This program is designed to challenge students beyond the Honors Experience. To be eligible, you must meet The Honors Experience requirements, complete 12 or more Honors credits and receive a ‘B’ or better in all Honors courses, and demonstrate evidence of leadership, service or contribution to the college or community.
Participation in The Honors Program produces the same results and you will be designated as an honors program graduate on your transcripts and receiving an Honors Program cord for Commencement. For consideration of acceptance into either Honors Program, complete the Honors Program and Project Contract available online at www.gatewaycc.edu/ Academic/Honors and be sure to obtain all necessary signatures. Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Phi Theta Kappa is the official International Honors Society for two-year colleges. This student organization provides many opportunities for involvement and leadership. The local Alpha Alpha Epsilon Chapter of PTK is supported by our campus as a significant honor.

Eligibility Requirements All persons using any type of Veterans Educational Assistance program are required to make satisfactory academic progress toward achievement of their program of study.
To receive educational assistance you will need to: 1. Download the Veterans Educational Benefits request form at www.gatewaycc.edu/ Support/Veterans
2. Print and complete the form. 3. Go to the VONAPP (Veterans Online Application) website at http://vabenefits.vba.va.gov/ vonapp/main.asp.
4. Click on the “Start VONAPP” button and complete the online application then click submit. Once your application has been processed, you will receive a letter from the VA explaining their decision regarding your eligibility for the program. 5. Bring both the request form and the VA Certificate of Eligibility letter to the Veterans Office for assistance on getting enrollment certification.

Rent-A-Text Students have the option to participate in the new Rent-A-Text program and save up to 50% on textbooks upfront by renting rather than purchasing their books.
Whether students shop online or in the campus bookstore the program allows the student to select their book–new or used–and rent it based on the price of a new book. For example, if a new book originally costs $100, then the rental fee is only $45. Students are then asked to return the book before the last day of the semester. In order to rent a textbook through the bookstore, which is operated by Follett, a student must be 18 years old with a major credit card. The credit card number is kept on file for collateral, but the students may pay for their rental books using credit cards, cash or financial aid.
Students under age 18 can have their parent rent books for them. Although all textbooks are not available for rent, the bookstore currently has 95 titles available for the rental program and the list continues to grow. For more information, contact the bookstore at (602) 286-8400

College Terms and Definitions Academic Advisor: A
person who guides and advises students on academic matters, such as degree requirements, transfer requirements and graduation. Academic Year: Fall and Spring (annually beginning August through May). Add/Drop: The period of registration when students can change their schedule without penalty (see college catalog for specific timelines). College Catalog: An official source giving information about programs, course descriptions, facilities, policies, student life and student rights. Counselor: A certified person who assists students with educational planning and/or personal/social issues and concerns. Electives: Courses that a student chooses to take, in consultation with an advisor, toward their intended degree, as distinguished from required courses. Semester: Time of instruction, approximately 15-16 weeks. i.e., Fall or Spring semester. GateWay also offers a summer session. Registration: Process through which students select courses for a given semester. Withdraw: Dropping a class past the add/drop dates. Schedule of Classes: List of classes, days and times that are offered for a specific semester. Prerequisite: Course or program that must be completed before advancing to a higher course or program. Grade Point Average: Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is the overall average from the grades and grade points you received and the credits you earned in all the courses you have taken. Grade points range from 4.00 for an A to 0.00 for an F.

Major: The subject a student wishes to study in-depth. Core Requirements: Mandatory courses required for completion of a degree.
General Education Requirements: Also
known as Gen Ed. courses needed to complete the core requirements for a degree i.e., math, science, English, reading, etc. College Work Study: A Federal financial aid program, which allows students to be employed on a college campus. Credit Hour: The number of hours a class is scheduled to meet each week determines the value of a course or the number of credit hours you will receive for that course. For example, ENG 101 (College Composition) involves three class hours each week and is worth three credit hours. Credits: Units used to record the completion of courses. The catalog of a college defines the number and kinds of credits that are required for the college’s degrees and states the value of each course offered. Full-Time Student: A student taking 12 credits or more. Part-Time Student: A student taking under 12 credits. Syllabus: A contract between teacher and student that outlines course competencies and requirements. Will generally include teachers contact information, grading policy, timeline for assignments, etc. Tuition and Fees: An amount charged by the college, to cover institutional services. Refer to the college catalog or schedule for due dates and fee cost. Transcript: Student’s educational record.
Undergraduate Studies: Two or four-year programs at colleges or universities, encompasses associate and bachelor degrees. Certificate of Completion:
Awarded upon successful completion of core requirements for certain degrees. Associate Degree: Generally about 60 credits, a two-year degree awarded to students upon successful completion of a specific program of study, includes core requirements plus General Requirements. Bachelor Degree: Generally about 120 credits, a four-year degree awarded to a student upon successful completion of a specific program of study, includes upper and lower division of classes.
Types of Classes Lecture: Traditional
instruction, a faculty lectures in classes of 20 to 30 students. Hybrid Courses: Traditional instruction mixed with online instruction and activities resulting in reduced physical class time. Online Courses: Over the Internet, online instruction. Requires reliable access to the Internet and a valid email account. Exams may require on-site attendance. Open Entry: Courses: Course instructions, activities and assignments are completed independently and self-paced. Exams and assignment are submitted online and/or through the ICT Open Computer Lab.

About GateWay Community College
About Maricopa County Community College District
As one of the Maricopa Community Colleges, GateWay Community College is a fully accredited public institution of higher education, emphasizing both academic and career-training programs. GateWay offers more than 125 degree, certificate and workforce training options in the following areas: Apprenticeships, Automotive, Business, Environment, Health Care, Industrial Technology, Information Technology, Liberal Arts, Math and Science, and Nursing and has emerged as a leading institution in meeting the needs of business and industry. As a division of the College, the Maricopa Skill Center offers 18 self-paced, entry-level vocational training programs. GateWay is also home to GateWay Early College High School which provides students with the opportunity to earn a high school diploma and an associate’s degree, enough college credits to enter a four-year year university as a junior or a certificate of completion in an occupational area.
The Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) consists of 10 nationally accredited community colleges, two skill centers and multiple education centers. The District ranks as one of the nation’s largest providers of higher education and is the largest single provider of higher education in Arizona. MCCCD is the largest provider of healthcare workers and job training in the state, educating and training more than 250,000 students year-round.
