2015 Marian Catholic High School

The five individuals chosen for the 2015 Marian Catholic High School Hall of Fame share a deep affection for and an abiding commitment to the institution that provided an intellectual, spiritual, and moral foundation and help launch them into the world. These outstanding members of the Marian Catholic community will be recognized for their accomplishments at the 2015 Hall of Fame Awards dinner on February 5, 2015, at Olympia Fields Country Club.

Selected this year are Daniel Mulhollan ’62, Alumnus of the Year; Mark Weishaar ’76 and Joe Klupchak ’85, Athletes of the Year; John Kozojed, Spirit of Marian; and Charlie Misovye ’78, Fine Arts Distinguished Achievement. By Marcia Borucki Neville

The Hall of Fame awards honor alumni, parents, faculty and friends of Marian Catholic who have distinguished themselves in their chosen field and have upheld the Dominican tradition of unselfish service to others. The awards were established in 1994 to commend those graduates and friends of Marian who have embodied and exemplified the school’s mission of “Teaching Scholars with a Soul.”

Band records another top ten finish at BOA Grand Nationals

The Marian Catholic Marching Band finished their 2014-2015 season on a high note, with performances that continued to fuel the band’s stellar reputation nationwide. This year’s show, entitled “Rapture of the Deep” took the band and audiences on an underwater journey. Rapture of the deep refers to a condition that happens when a body is underwater too long and nitrogen replaces oxygen. This causes the person, in this case a guard member, to hallucinate. The guard member hallucinates sea monsters that ultimately save her. Director Greg Bimm said that beyond the storyline the show was a “parable about belief and being saved.” This show was the foundation that led the band to another year of excellence. Starting in the summer, students from all grade levels and incoming freshmen, began working on this season. After several local competitions, the band continued onto the State Championship held at Illinois State University. The Marian Catholic Marching Band had a strong showing at this early competition and defended their state championship title for the sixth consecutive year and also won their class, making this their 35th straight class title. The band then attended the Bands of America Super Regional in Indianapolis, where they competed with bands from numerous Midwestern states. Marian Catholic was one of the fourteen bands to continue to the finals of the competition and made a splash, being named third overall.

Although Mulhollan originally had his sights set on a legal career, he has no misgivings about the path he did take. And he can point to a number activities at Marian that he says prepared him for that path, such as newspaper and yearbook, which taught him “the importance of meeting deadlines and the key elements of journalism.” Drama and debate clubs, he says, instilled “comfort and self-confidence, which helped particularly in leadership roles.” Serving as vice president of student council senior year gave him “a sense of being responsible and of the consequences of corporate decisions.” Key components of his high school education were the social skills and ethical behavior that accompanied the solid academics. Appropriate “social interaction and the building of friendships has always been a mainstay [at MCHS] and I learned from that,” he says. “I also have an abiding faith in the overall decency of people because of my upbringing and years at Marian and that has always stayed with me.” Unarguably successful, Mulhollan says there are no secrets to professional achievement. “First and foremost its hard work. There’s no getting around it.” He urges students to take advantage of the amount of time they have without adult responsibilities to focus on their education, because preparation is critical to success. And, he notes, “completing Marian you will be well prepared for whatever school you go to.” Mulhollan resides in Alexandria, Va., with wife Juli ’62, a pediatric nurse. The couple has three daughters and eight grandchildren. He and his wife recently celebrated their 70th birthdays with a trip to Amsterdam and Berlin.

Daniel P. Mulhollan ’62 Alumnus of the Year

Marian Catholic High School has long emphasized the importance of service to others, and Alumnus of the Year Daniel P. Mulhollan ’62, a member of the school’s first graduating class, has indeed walked the talk during his 42-year public service career. Mulhollan, who retired in 2011 as director of the Congressional Research Service (CRS) at The Library of Congress, credits a lifelong love of learning, reinforced by the education he received at Marian, with influencing the course his life and career took. “I just like to learn. I like to read, I like to understand how the world works. And Marian nurtured that in so many ways,” he says. During high school, Mulhollan recalls a visit by the late Congressman Ed Derwinski (R.-Ill.). “He made a very positive impression on me,” Mulhollan says. “It was the whole notion that an individual sacrifices a lot for the common good. I was struck then, and still am after 42 years, that Congress is an incredible institution, though less appreciated than it should be.” He earned a bachelor’s degree with honors in political science from the College of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., which he attended on a General Electric College Bowl Scholarship. After, he received a National Defense Education Act Title IV Fellowship to Georgetown University, where he completed his graduate courses in Political Science and passed his doctoral comprehensives, along with exams establishing competency in French and Spanish.” Mulhollan, who grew up in Steger with five siblings who all attended Marian, began his career in 1969 as an analyst in what then was called the Legislative Reference Service. In 1994, he was named head of the CRS, directing the work of more than 800 employees in 10 offices. The CRS works exclusively for the members of Congress, providing them with research, analysis and information to guide legislation. It is, Mulhollan notes, one of several entities charged with trying to help Congress make informed decisions. The day’s headlines, Mulhollan says, essentially were his workload, as his office provided information to congressional committees on such issues as the Watergate investigation, the Nixon and Clinton impeachments inquiries, the Freedom of Information Act, the Government in Sunshine Act, the Civil Reform Act of 1978 and numerous others. Speaking on the House floor on the occasion of Mulhollan’s imminent retirement, Rep. David Price (D.-N.C.) called Mulhollan an “institution within an institution.” Mulhollan, Price said, “personified the growth of CRS from a relatively small division of the Library of Congress into the world-class source of objective and authoritative research and analysis that it is today.” Through his efforts, there now exists, Mulhollan says, a “pool of physicists, physicians, economists, attorneys and other experts who are paid by the taxpayer to provide Congress assistance so the members don’t have to rely on an expert from, for example, the Environmental Protection Agency. They can go to the field biologists and say, ‘OK, they are arguing this is an endangered species. Give me an objective assessment.’” As Price noted, Mulhollan “expanded the [CRS’s] ability to bring interdisciplinary scholarship to bear on complex issues of policy, recruiting scientists and engineers to work alongside policy analysts and attorneys.”

Mark Weishaar ’76 Athlete of the Year

Mark Weishaar ’76 spent a lot of time in the chapel during his days at Marian Catholic, and now the entire school is better off because he did. During a reunion visit to Marian one year, Weishaar, a 2015 Athlete of the Year, stopped into the chapel and was dismayed with what he found: walls that needed plastering and painting, and carpeting that needed to be replaced. “I used to work with the nuns a little bit, cleaning the convent, the chapel, washing windows,” he says. “So I spent a fair amount of time in the chapel. And this wasn’t the place I remembered. I remembered a real lively, beautiful place.” Weishaar offered to pick up the tab for repairs, but Sr. Paul had a better idea. “She called me about a month later and said she wanted me to give her a donation to create an endowment for the chapel, so we could keep it nice forever,” he recalls. So several months later, when he received a call during the annual Phone-a-thon asking for a donation, Weishaar shocked and delighted the student caller by telling her that he would he would be make a donation to create an endowment. “Marian is really special to me,” he says. “Marian is the foundation of my life, other than my parents, that still carries on today. It means a lot to me; it’s not just a high school I went to.” Weishaar says his parents and his exemplary Catholic education at Marian because of the Dominican sisters really set the tone for his life: “The nuns were great. I really loved the sisters. They were instrumental in helping me from my faith and my learning and my ability to get along with society.”

“I played baseball, basketball and football all four years. I think my senior year, I didn’t even have a day off between sports. I went from one to the other,” he recalls. Appropriately, some of Klupchak’s favorite memories of Marian are sports-related. “Football season senior year, the team became so close-knit,” he says. “We all went out together, worked out together. It was a great bonding time. Back in the day, we were only the second or third Marian team to make the playoffs. We all came together for one goal. It wasn’t about individual players or stats. It was a total team effort.” Klupchak, who grew up in Olympia Fields and resides in Flossmoor with his wife Sheila and three children, also has fond recollections of his coaches, particularly Coaches Mattio and Ron Guagenti. “At that time, unlike today, all the coaches coached multiple sports. They knew that you had to get ready for what was coming up and not specialize in one thing. It was kind of nice when you see the pressures the kids have today, where some coaches don’t want them playing more than one sport. It was nice to be able to excel at three different sports and play for those coaches. They were your teachers and mentors too.” Klupchak also recalls the huge impact Marian’s mission of service made on him, most notably a class called Discovery in Service, in which seniors were assigned to various social service agencies and hospitals. Klupchak volunteered at a Chicago Heights center for mentally and developmentally disabled children. “It was so rewarding,” he says. “It really put Christian learning into action. We helped out in whatever way the teachers needed. There were a lot of boys, and I would take them to gym class and help them in the locker room. We were like aides, and helped them with classroom activities.” Klupchak went on to play football and baseball at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., where he earned a bachelor of science degree in psychology in 1989. “I was completely prepared for the rigors of college, to succeed academically. The values I got from school and those instilled by my family prepared me for everything I faced going forward,” he says. Klupchak currently is a sales and marketing manager for Dennis Coatar and Associates, which represents several different manufacturers. Coatar is a 1974 graduate of Marian. In 2001, Klupchak and his family (he also has three sisters-in-law who attended Marian) established an endowed scholarship in memory of his father George. It was important to the family to honor him and give back. “My parents made many sacrifices to send nine kids to Marian and give us Catholic educations,” Klupchak says. “Now that I have kids, it made me appreciate the things they did for us, how they gave up their time for us.”

A basketball standout during his career at Marian, Weishaar led the 1974-75 team with 45 assists, and the 1975-76 team in scoring, with 431 points. He also led the team in scoring for 13 games. He earned a basketball scholarship to Western Michigan University, where he played all four years and was Mid-America Conference All-Academic in 1979 and 1980. He graduated in 1980 with an accounting degree, and says his Marian education was a big influence on his major. “I took four and a half years of math at Marian, and it was the foundation of my career and my life,” says Weishaar, who also is a certified public accountant and has an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. Weishaar, who grew up in Chicago Heights and currently lives in Kalamazoo, Mich., is not the only one in his family with an affinity for math: His wife of 32 years, Karen, has a master’s degree in accounting, and his three sons all work in finance and accounting. A member of the National Honor Society while at Marian, Weishaar says he found college to be easy: “I had a 4.0 my first two semesters of college because of Marian. It was just a recap of high school.” In addition to its strong academics forming the basis of his career, Weishaar, who is president of Sturgis Molded Products, a custom plastics injection molding company, says the school’s faith-based learning and social aspects very much influenced his life. “I’m a pretty outgoing guy and a lot of that was a result of the whole Marian experience,” he notes. “I learned the basis of relationships and being open to new things and new people. “Spiritually, Marian formed the foundation of what my family does. We are super involved in our children’s Catholic school here in Kalamazoo. My experiences at Marian led us to want to get involved in our diocese. If it weren’t for Marian, there is no way I would be doing these things.” Besides his service to his parish and diocese, Weishaar serves on the board of Southwest Michigan First, an economic development corporation. He also is on the board of the Western Michigan University Foundation, where he is chair of the finance committee and a member of the executive committee.

Joe Klupchak ’85 Athlete of the Year

For Joe Klupchak ’85, Marian Catholic High School was a big part of his life even before he entered grade school. The youngest of nine children, all of whom attended Marian, Klupchak fondly recalls attending games and other activities at the school with his brothers and sisters. “There was one of us at Marian for 20 years,” says Klupchak, a 2015 Athlete of the Year. “I remember going to a basketball game and seeing Mark Weishaar play.” Weishaar ’76, joins Klupchak in this year’s Hall of Fame. Following in his brothers’ athletic footsteps, Klupchak distinguished himself by receiving four Most Valuable Player awards – in football and baseball his senior year, and in basketball his junior and senior years. In addition, he was named All Conference/All Area in all of these sports, and also was the only player in school history – other than long-time coach Dave Mattio ’66 – to earn four varsity letters in football. As a junior, he earned a National Army Scholar Athlete award.

John Kozojed Spirit of Marian

Does John Kozojed, assistant principal of student activities at Marian, really bleed black and gold? That’s the rumor, undoubtedly started because of the phenomenal amount of time and energy Kozojed has devoted to Marian in his 27 years here.

The performer, director and producer attributes this “luck” to the talented teachers who helped guide him, most notably music teacher Sr. Anna Rose, who encouraged him to audition for plays and participate in madrigals and choir. “Sr. Anna Rose was the person who kind of plucked me out and said, ‘I want you to further your education in the world of music and art and theater.’ I was inspired by her passion.” Pivotal in his Marian education was the opportunity to play George M. Cohan in the all-school musical “George M!” At that time, he says, it was unheard of for a sophomore to have a leading role in the musical, especially someone who could sing and tap dance. “It was a remarkable experience: To memorize all those lines, and age from a young man to just before he dies [at 64],” Misovye recalls. “It was an organizational lesson as well. Balancing a huge amount of homework and rehearsals was not an easy task. I think that is why I am now a very organized person and make time management a priority.” The Chicago Heights resident has worked on stages around the country in all aspects of theater: actor, singer, dancer, choreographer, director and producer. Since 2004, Misovye has been with the Theatre at the Center, Inc., in Munster, Ind., where he currently is a director, producer and group sales coordinator. “I do a lot of fundraising; I do all the programming. And every once in a while, I still get my feet wet performing,” he notes. One of the most rewarding aspects of his career, he says, is being able to share his knowledge with others and help them follow in his footsteps. “I get a big kick out of teaching,” he says. “Passing along your years of training and education and experience is exciting and exhilarating. It’s a great feeling to be the nucleus of inspiration for a greater good.” In addition to several other theaters, Misovye offers his teaching talents at The Drama Group in Chicago Heights, where he studied and took advanced classes while in high school. A long-time member and past president of the group, he also instituted and heads the Children’s Theatre presentations there. Misovye also eagerly shares his passion with students at Marian, where he directed and choreographed “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” subbing for a semester for a theater teacher who was on leave. He also directed and choreographed “Oklahoma!,” “West Side Story” and “Annie Get Your Gun,” and worked with the MCHS choir on its concerts. “Good teachers produce good teachers, and Marian has always had the best,” he says. “I am grateful to have found a career that would let me inspire others and teach them to perform.” Misovye earned a bachelor of science degree in theater from Illinois State University in 1982. He credits his Marian education with giving him the tools for an easy transition: “I never realized how well prepared I was for college because I kept growing day by day and year by year, and by the time I got to college, nothing was that overwhelming. What was overwhelming were the other people who were not as well prepared.” In addition to preparation, Misovye says, it was the perseverance instilled at Marian, along with the solid moral and ethical foundation established by his parents Charles and Lucille, that allowed him to achieve the career of his dreams. “A solid education, advanced training, perseverance and faith in God that all things will work out for the best have helped me to succeed and accomplish my goal of making a living in the performing arts,” he says. “If you have a dream, you have to give it 100 percent. You have to be your own motivator, because that is what will put you in the forefront. I have done everything. I played a Lotto ball. I was a dancing orange for Jewel food store’s 50th anniversary. Nothing is too small. They always say there are no small roles only small actors. And that is very true in life as well.”

Kozojed, the 2015 Spirit of Marian award winner, began his career at MCHS in 1988 as a teacher in theology and history. He was hired, he says, with the intention that he would create and move into the Director of Student Activities. “I had served as student activities director and campus minister at my previous high school,” he says. “The only reason that I left [Mendel] was that it closed. “When I first came here I was not highly optimistic that I was going to find the same kind of community and some place I would want to stay for all these years. So I guess it was sort of a surprise – a very welcome one, as Marian has been socially and spiritually a source of life for me these past 27 years.” It is that sense of community and Marian’s commitment to excellence, he believes, that compels faculty and staff members to spend their careers here. “There’s something about this place that you always want to be part of it as well as give it your best. It instills a family atmosphere, and it becomes your support in good times and in bad times.” As part of his responsibilities, Kozojed is very involved in the Kairos retreats, and says he finds the depth of spirituality the students possess remarkable. “Oftentimes students will come to the retreat struggling or looking or questioning,” he says. “By the end of it and, I believe for many, by the end of their time here, they’ve seen what I talk about as the Movement of God. It’s something that’s inside all of us, and I believe if you search for it you can find it. And I think they truly do that, especially through the Kairos program.” Kozojed says he see Marian’s culture of service as having a big impact on students. “By the time they are out of here they have figured out that the idea of service and the idea of veritas are one and the same,” he notes. “For us to be truly involved in our society, truly involved in our faith, truly preachers of what we believe, you do that through your actions, through your service to others.” One of the things he has learned in his time at Marian is the benefits of collaboration. “As long as you are working together and not trying to do it alone, you can accomplish virtually anything. That goes for working not only with the staff and the other administrators but with the students as well.” Kozojed, who hails from Chicago, attended Quigley Preparatory Seminary South. A 1979 graduate of Niles College of Loyola University with majors in history and theology, he also has a master’s degree in educational administration from St. Xavier University. He has been married to his wife Diana for 31 years. Being selected to receive the Spirit of Marian award was unexpected, he says: “After this many years, what I do is part of who I am. To get recognized for it is a surprise as well as an honor.”

Charles Misovye ’78

Fine Arts Distinguished Achievement

Unlike many young teenagers, Charlie Misovye ’78 knew early in life the direction he wanted to take and was “blessed” to develop at Marian Catholic the skills he would need to launch his theater career. “When I got up on stage and saw I was making people smile and happy, there was an emotional connection,” says Misovye, winner of the 2015 Fine Arts Distinguished Achievement award. “When I saw and felt that reaction, I knew that this was what I had to keep doing. I found it in high school. I was lucky.”

2014 ENDOWMENT GOLF CLASSIC

SMASHES GOAL

For 25 years, the Marian Catholic Endowment Golf Classic has endured and grown to be one of the largest fundraisers for Marian Catholic High School. The 25th Annual EGC held on Sept. 16 at the famed Olympia Fields Country Club once again surpassed expectations and netted more than $114,000 exceeding its $100,000 goal. This year’s event, co-chaired by Greg Underwood, Flossmoor, IL, and Mark Peifer, Munster, IN, could not have been possible without the help of the 22-member committee. With more than 180 golfers on the two picturesque courses, family, friends, and community members flocked to Olympia Fields from near and far to support Marian Catholic.

Marian Catholic Welcomes Newly Appointed CFO and Business Manager This past year Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Bill Hogan made an announcement that most desire. After 45 years of work and service at Marian Catholic High School Bill Hogan let the Mr. Bill Hogan Spartan community know of his retirement. Bill spent a number of years at Quigley South High School where he held the same position, before making the move to Marian Catholic to serve as the Chief Financial Officer. After a brief transition period of guidance for the new CFO hire, Bill will begin a new, well-deserved phase of life, pursuing activities that will offer a spirit of joy and adventure. Marian Catholic thanks Bill for his many years of dedication to the school community.

Knowing the extremely long hours and years of accumulated knowledge that have been inherent in Bill’s commitment to Marian Catholic, it was determined that Marian will best be served by hiring both a Chief Financial Officer and a Business Manager. The role of Chief Financial Officer will be filled by John J. Stibich. John is well known to the Marian Catholic Community as an alumni parent, soccer coach, Director of the Board, member of the Finance Committee, and field crew leader for the Marian Catholic Band. John notes, “I knew coming to Marian on a daily basis would provide me with an atmosphere of a well-knit family and community.” John comes to Marian with 20 years of experience at the National Bureau of Property Administration where he served as both the Chief Financial Officer and the Chief Information Officer. John is an active member of St. Stephen Church in Tinley Park.

Business manager, Mrs. Mary (Romano) Harrison ’81 & Chief Financial Officer, Mr. John Stibich.

In the role of Business Manager will be Mary Romano Harrison ’81. As both an alumna and a current parent, Mary is deeply committed to the Mission and Vision of Marian Catholic. Mary, who resides in Steger, is a certified public accountant and has experience in both the banking industry and country club environment. She recently served in the capacity of controller for the Flossmoor Country Club. Mary is an active member of St. Liborius Parish and served as a member of the parish finance committee. “Being a graduate of Marian and my daughter being a student there I feel that I have a home and an extended family at Marian. I want to take an active part in all that Marian is now and will be in the future,” states Mary.

MEN’S SOCCER

Advances to Super-Sectional “In my several years of coaching at Marian Catholic, I have been fortunate to coach some fantastic players, and specifically, some very skillful forwards,” Shahtaji said. “But what Alec Guarino achieved this year is a unique accomplishment. He is a true finisher. He did something special that will motivate future players to aim high in order to break his records.”

Like Guarino, Marian Catholic’s women’s swimming was represented by a very unique and special individual this year in senior Abby Kresal. A staple in the pool for the Spartans for a long time, Kresal was an IHSA state qualifier in all four seasons. “Abby Kresal has represented Marian in the best possible way for the past four years – in and out of the pool,” longtime swimming Coach Sean Scanlon praised of Kresal, who finished 42nd in the state in the 100-yard individual medley this fall. “She holds two school records and is a four-time state qualifier. Her work ethic in the pool and the classroom are second to none, which has made her a true student-athlete.”

Members of the Men’s Soccer team gather after their Sectional Title.

Coming off a season where it won the prestigious Reavis Windy City Classic and graduating several key seniors in 2013, Marian Catholic men’s soccer had several question marks entering the fall season. The soccer Spartans and 13-year Head Coach Nasser Shahtaji answered virtually all of those questions in fine fashion this fall. Led by record-setting senior Alec Guarino, Marian soccer posted a school-record 18 victories (18-8-2) en route to a first-ever appearance in the IHSA Class 3A Elite Eight. “There is a poster at my work that starts with: Food for thoughts in our day-to-day lives... None of us is as powerful alone as we are together,” explained Shahtaji, who has led the Marian men’s program to 136 victories in his tenure. “Every time I look at the poster, it reminds me of our team... the way they jelled together, the way they overcame obstacles, the way they played for each other and became a team. As a coach, there is nothing sweeter than seeing your players overachieve more than what was expected from them.” “After last year’s great season and then losing half of the starters to graduation, nobody expected us to do as well. But hard work, positive attitude, desire to do well, supportive parents, enthusiastic fans, and the Athletic Department made it possible to do something special. Also, I have to mention the devotion, dedication and knowledge of assistant coaches Marvin Rodas and Tim Ashe, who played huge roles in

helping our team reach a new height in Marian’s soccer history.” Along the way, Marian knocked off defending state champion Chicago Washington, 3-2 in overtime, to win the Lincoln-Way West Sectional. The dream season came to an end with a hard-fought 2-1 loss to St. Joseph in the Lemont Supersectional. While the Spartans had lost an impressive senior class, this year’s group responded with class, including Alec Guarino, Carlo Falcioni, Jeff Molitsky, Michael Quarles, Frank Raymond, Kyle Reichart, Cody Rodas and Kellen Williams. “One of the key factors in reaching 18 victories and establishing new records for our soccer program was the role of our experienced, skillful and determined senior players, who wanted to finish their soccer season with a sense of accomplishment and happiness,” Shahtaji explained. “They not only did that, but also made all of us proud and happy. Kudos to all players for their tireless efforts, strong winning desire and, especially to the seniors for their great leadership. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing our senior captains raising regional and sectional trophies in the air and celebrating them with teammates, families and supporters.” A headache for opponents all year, Guarino scored a school-record 34 goals this year and earned Player of the Year honors from the Southtown Star.

Next Generation Leaders 2014-2015 Marian Fund

Be a part of the future of Teaching Scholars with a Soul through the Marian Fund

WHAT IS A PHONATHON?

Your support of the Annual Fund is evidence of your commitment to a Marian Catholic education and a means of building the future by providing students with the opportunity to achieve success. We are grateful to all who choose to support our Mission by gifting to the Marian Fund. Each gift has a meaningful impact on the school, and on those who work and study at Marian Catholic. Gifts to the Marian Fund are invited throughout the year from thousands of loyal benefactors who want to be part of a solid investment that empowers the Catholic Education Mission established by the Dominican Sisters of Springfield. The Marian Fund is a vital funding source that supports a broad spectrum of needs that cannot be met through the tuition-driven operating budget alone. True to the fundamental Mission of Marian Catholic High School, the school community moves boldly into the future, and with God’s grace and your support, our students are on their way to achieving excellence.

Phonathon is a fun event that connects the Marian Catholic community both near and far. Over the course of seven sessions, current parents, alumni parents, and students will reach out to you and ask for support of the Marian Fund. Please take our volunteer phonathoner’s call. Your investment in the Marian Fund will directly support MCHS operating expenses for its many programs and initiatives. Your gift to the Marian Fund may be restricted to any area of school life and, while the Marian Fund (of which Phonathon is an integral part) supports all aspects of the school community, three areas have been targeted this year as priorities: unrestricted gifts, technology, and the Sr. Simeon Fund. Success of the Marian Fund Parent Phonathon is dependent on your participation. Please participate with us and help Marian Catholic reach its goal.

Building their futures and achieving excellence Band records another top ten finish at BOA Grand Nationals Continued from Cover

The group finished their season strongly at the Bands of America Grand National competition held November 13-15 in Indianapolis, IN. Marian was one of 96 bands in the competition, and after fantastic preliminary’s and semifinal’s performances, the band earned a spot alongside 11 other bands in the finals. This was the band’s 31st consecutive finals appearance, which is an unprecedented record. The Marian Catholic Marching Band finished the season by earning 10th in the nation with a score of 87.45. The band also captured second place in

Class AA and was awarded the Al Castronovo Esprit de Corps award, which is awarded to one group that demonstrates spirit, pride, and friendliness. Greg Bimm reflected on the season saying “the student level of achievement was really high.” He was also very proud of the students and their “belief in self and others.” The group was able to come together to produce another successful season and continue the legacy the Marian Catholic Marching Band has created through the years.

BOD Members Come Together to Offer Scholarship Approximately one year ago, Terry Kenney ’76, former Director of the Board of Directors, proposed the establishment of a scholarship in the name of the Board of Directors. Taking Terry’s lead, the Board approved the Marian Catholic Board of Directors Endowed Scholarship on November 11, 2014. The Directors took immediate action to fund the scholarship which will be awarded to a student in the Fall of 2015. To be eligible, the student must be a sophomore who maintained a cumulative GPA of 4.0 or higher, demonstrates service, is involved in school activities, and models Catholic values. The scholarship may be renewed each year based on the student maintaining these requirements and completing the common application process. The Board felt that in addition to strong academic achievement, the student receiving this scholarship should exhibit service to others, Catholic values, involvement in the Marian Catholic community, and a willingness to support Marian Catholic students when they become established in a career. The Board of Directors Endowed Scholarship supports Objective 1.3 of the strategic plan to “Increase the amount of merit and need-based scholarships to $2 million per year.” Thank you to our Board for taking a bold step to support the Mission of Marian Catholic. With their leadership, Marian Catholic will continue to reduce the financial barriers of our Next Generation Leaders. If you are interested in learning more about contributing to an existing scholarship or establishing your own scholarship, contact Vince Krydynski ’81 at (708) 756-9767.

Food & Toy Drive

A SUCCESS!

Another year and another great achievement for the Student Council Food Drive. The Drive is a great tradition hosted by the Student Council and the Marian Catholic community to help those in need around the holiday season. The west gym lobby is filled with food and toys on this special day as students from each Emmaus’ present gifts to their assigned families. “Each Emmaus takes up a collection to buy gifts for the family members and the students do the shopping to provide these gifts for their families,” states Student Council Co-moderator, Mary Mesterharm. This year Marian Catholic was able to help 40 families during the holiday season. Emmaus rooms are given the gender and ages of their specific family nearly one month in advance and it is their responsibility to provide for these families. “We are so proud of how our students come through and help others,” says Mrs. Jen Lamb, Student Council Co-moderator. In addition to each family receiving gifts and food, each family is provided with a turkey complements of an anonymous donor.

MCHS students present their gifts to their family during this year’s food and toy drive.

On August 6th, 2014 Sr. Luma along with other Dominican Sisters were warned to leave their convent at midnight and drive to Erbil, Iraq for safety because of ISIS terrorism. They left everything behind and have not been able to return. In the meantime Sr. Luma was able to teach a graduate level class in Jerusalem and will return to Erbil in January. As times became difficult for Sr. Luma and her community, Marian Catholic came together as a family to support the needs of the Dominican Sisters in Iraq. Students, faculty and friends of Marian donated over $11,500 to help the Dominican Sisters support the refugee camps. We are also thankful for Flint-Ridge Sacred Heart Academy in La Canada, CA and St. Thomas Aquinas in Hammond, LA for also donating to the fund. “It says a lot about the people associated with the Marian Catholic Community and what we are truly about.” said Sr. Teresa Marron, O.P. “I know Marian Catholic holds a special place in Sr. Luma’s heart and she is so appreciative of everything that we do to help those in need.”

Sr. Luma, O.P. reads to both the children and adults of her hometown in Iraq.

Please continue to pray for the Dominican Sisters of Iraq as they continue to serve the Christians of their country. When asked what has been the most satisfying aspect of her vocation, she responded, “In parish ministry and teaching I was blessed with the ‘hundredfold’ that Jesus speaks of. I have come to cherish so many friends. They have become my extended family. There have been sorrows, pain, and fulfillment and joy! God showers me with love and joy which I hope I can continue to share with others.” Sister Karen Marie Kvidera, O.P., a native of Cary, is celebrating 50 years as a Dominican Sister of Springfield, Illinois. REUNION WEEKEND CLASS OF 1964

It is always a special time to gather with friends and old classmates, particularly those you may have not seen in some time. In September of this past year, members of the graduating class of 1964 collaborated to celebrate their Fifty Year Reunion at Marian Catholic. It was a pleasure to have over 40 members of this class come together and share all the great memories at Marian Catholic, while catching up on past years. Classmates were reacquainted at the Alumni Gathering on September 26th, in the Sr. M. Paul McCaughey, O.P. Leadership Center. This was an opportunity for classmates to join one another in the celebration of an all school reunion. Food and beverages were served as Alums were able to relive their past. The official reunion was held the following day and began with Mass, which took place in the Marian Catholic Chapel. The Chapel had a very superior setting as Father William O’Mara spoke about the pleasure of all the classmates coming together. To remember those classmates who were no longer with us, there was a memorial that consisted of a lit candle and their names being recognized. Mass was followed by a reception held at Olympia Fields Country Club which consisted of a lot of laughs and fond memories. “Worries about going to a 50th reunion weren’t much different than worries about going to our Junior Prom,” said Connie (Corso) Nykiel. However, instead of fretting over whether or not members would have a date, classmates were more concerned if anyone would recognize each other and remember the names of former classmates. this for the rest when she said, “They better make the letters on our name tags real big!” The event was decorated with past memorabilia that consisted of trophies, yearbooks and photos to bring back wonderful memories. To add a little fun to the festivities special prizes were awarded to attendees who traveled the farthest, had the most children, had the most grandchildren and had been married the longest. Those who traveled the farthest were appropriately given gas gift cards. Janet (McEvoy) Barber topped the list of furthest traveled by flying 2,200 miles from Seaside, OR. Lynn (Berglind) Manning, Donna (Pabst) De Angeles, and Kathryn (Showalter) Pierce followed close behind by trekking all the way from Arizona. Jim Prombo was presented with a picture frame featuring the word “grandchildren.” He has the most grandchildren, 19 of them to be exact. Jim tied with Mary Ann (Balfour) Carlstead for having the most children. They both have six children. Barbara (Strons) St. Aubin won the “Happily Ever After Award” for being married the longest. On the night of the reunion, Barbara and her husband had been married 49 years and one month. To make the night even more eloquent, the class of 1964 was presented with a special gift from an old friend. The class of ’64 had a very special bond with Sr. Mary Gael, O.P. Unfortunately, Sr. Gael took ill and could not make the Reunion, but she did not forget.
