SISTERS TO EMPHASIZE DOMINICAN SPONSORSHIP, ESTABLISH NEW BOARD

Dominican Sisters sing during the 50th Anniversary Mass on September 6.

The Dominican Sisters of Springfield have recently taken steps to strengthen the means by which the spirit and Mission of the Dominican Order is shared with constituents in sponsored institutions of the Congregation. Sister Dominica Brennan, O.P. has been appointed by the Prioress General and her council to head the Office for Mission Integration which will be responsible to lead this initiative. The presidents and principals of all community owned and operated institutions will work closely with this new office to ensure that the Dominican pillars continue as foundational supports throughout the future of all community sponsored institutions. While there will be no structural change in the day-to-day operations of Marian Catholic High School, the faculty and staff will have additional professional development opportunities with emphasis on the four pillars of prayer, study, preaching, and community. Along with shared decision making and the search for truth, there will be more intentional promotion of the Dominican Charism. Realizing that shared decision making is so fundamental to the Dominican way of life, and recognizing the strong historical contribution that has been made by the current Advisory Board model of Marian Catholic High School, the Congregation has approved a shift from an advisory board to a governing one. This Board of Directors will form a strong partnership with the Dominicans of Springfield in their efforts to advance the Mission of Marian Catholic High School. In the months ahead, more information will be shared as this renewed commitment unfolds.

50TH ANNIVERSARY LAUNCHED WITH MASS, REUNIONS, AND CELEBRATION “Each of us has had our ‘Marian Moment’...the length of time, circumstances and place in these past 50 years have varied...but we’ve all experienced the quest for excellence, the belief in and promise of youth, the compassion and the joys that yield that strong sense of community. “We have all had our space of history in these hallowed halls and our own Marian moment. Some of those moments lasted the four years of high school; for others it has been nearly 50 years of service.”

– Sr. Kathleen Anne Tait, O.P. from September 6, 2008 Liturgy

Sr. Kathleen Anne Tait, O.P.

More than 900 people attended the 50th Anniversary Mass on September 6 which was Celebrated by Francis Cardinal George.

Thank you TC2L Investors

TC2L investor wall MCHS newly completed FieldTurf ™

The Courage to Lead capital campaign for Marian Catholic celebrates the extended $6 Million goal, exceeding the preliminary goal by $750,000, with solid potential to go further. This capital project partnered with more than 370 investors from among alumni, current and past parents, faculty and staff, foundations, corporations and friends. A 2004 Long Range Planning led to the decision in 2005 to launch the campaign to fund the Marian Catholic Leadership Center/Student Union (opened for the ’07 school year) that supports a copyrighted, cutting edge Leadership Training curriculum. The campaign also supports endowment funding of scholarships and programs; campus growth realized in the newly completed FieldTurf ™ installation, expanded Bergstrom Fitness Center and the beginning stages of a Broadcasting curriculum. This tremendously successful capital project was accomplished during a three-year dialogue that extended across the country through published materials explaining the goals, keeping constituents updated on the progress of the campaign, and inviting investments throughout the quiet and public phases of The Courage to Lead campaign. TC2L at $6 Million is the second capital campaign in the school’s history, following the 1994 Partnership 2000 Capital Campaign netting nearly $4 million. Subsequent, restricted capital initiatives, such as the half-million dollar 1999 Science Labs Initiative, and the $1.9 million Dominican Way in 2000 to add a wing of classrooms, have helped expand a vibrant educational community of excellence.

Under the 16-year leadership of alumna and Dominican Sr. M. Paul McCaughey, O.P. ’67, Marian partnered through all theses campaigns with dynamic lay leadership. She was assisted by current Vice-President for Advancement, Mary C. Moffatt, who provided Counsel and Leadership to both capital campaigns, supported along the way by former Vice-President’s Michael Bruni ’86, now of LatzBruni Partners, and Peter Ruhl, who retired in 2007. Seasoned Campaign Coordinator, Peg Massucci, also Assistant to the President, helped direct the efforts of an already active and knowledgeable Advancement staff. Lay leadership remains at an exceptionally high number with 73 signing on as ambassadors for the TC2L Campaign, overseeing the progress and providing counsel to the administration. This group includes Honorary Chairs Sr. Rose Marie Riley, O.P. ’67, Melissa Sage Fadim and Nancy Rita Kaz; General Chairs Pat ’72 and Nancy Dolan, and Nick and Kathy Zagotta, along with a Steering Committee: Pete Kroner, Charlie Gallagher ’77, Kevin Larson, Holly Griffin, Bob Jones ’79. Unique to this campaign is the creation of a National Council of Leadership reflecting the expanding reach of the MCHS mission and experience. Elements of the campaign priorities will remain open to future funding, especially endowments for student scholarship, faculty development and the Leadership Program. Closing TC2L on such a high note becomes the ideal legacy to launch a 50th Anniversary celebration that looks forward to a bright future reflected in a proud, hard-working past.

BAND 4TH AT GRAND NATIONALS, ROSE BOWL BOUND

Band members Dan Klipper ’09, Keith Jennings ’09, and Chris Karlin ’09 were selected to the Army All-American Band.

The Marian Band performs at Grand Nationals, where it won Class AA and earned 4th overall

• Marian captured its 29th consecutive State Championship in class in early October at Illinois State University. Competing against bands from all six classes, Marian earned second place overall in the competition.

For Marian Catholic’s Marching Band, it’s been another historymaking fall season. With a fourth-place finish in the Bands of America Grand Nationals on November 15 in Indianapolis, Marian Catholic became the first band in history to qualify for the finals in 25 consecutive years. In fact, the Spartan Band has performed in the finals almost twice as many times as any other band nationwide. The Spartan Band also captured first place in the nation for Class AA, while winning captions for Outstanding Music Performance, Outstanding Visual Performance and Outstanding General Effect. While the fall of 2008 has been a staggering one for accolades, the good news for 2009-2010 is already arriving as Marian Catholic has been invited to march in the world famous 2010 Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena. Marian was one of approximately 20 bands selected for the 121st Rose Parade. “The Rose Parade is the granddaddy of all parades,” a proud Band Director Greg Bimm said. “Watching the beautiful floats and great bands on New Year’s morning is a long-standing tradition for millions of people around the world. For our band to be in Southern California, visiting Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Disneyland and then representing Marian in one of our country’s great events, is truly a significant honor. “As for me, I will be thinking of all of the years of great Marian Bands as we perform in the parade. I hope all band alumni know that we will be representing each of them, their hard work, and the legacy that they created.” A grand New Year’s Day tradition, the Rose Bowl Parade annually draws more than one million live spectators and a television viewing audience of more than 350 million internationally. Other fall 2008 season accomplishments were also impressive and numerous.

• Seniors Keith Jennings (Matteson), Chris Karlin (Dyer, IN) and Dan Klipper (Highland, IN) were chosen among only 97 students from throughout the country as members of the United States Army All-American Band. The three Marian Band members will travel to San Antonio in January for four days of rehearsal, then play at the Army AllAmerican Bowl televised on NBC on January 3. Marian Associate Band Director Bobby Lambert has been selected to work with the All-American Band in January as well. • Seventeen Marian Catholic High School musicians were selected to perform with the Illinois Music Educators Association AllDistrict Band and Orchestra. Students from the Chicagoland area compete for a position in one of two honor ensembles. These students play an audition for professionals in the field. These musicians will travel to Downers Grove South High School where they will rehearse for one day, then perform a concert in the evening. Next, the highest placements of these 17 will continue on to Peoria to perform with the Illinois All-State Ensembles in January. • The Marian Band also earned second place in the Bands of America Regional in St. Louis, MO, as 54 bands from several states across the Midwest traveled to the Edward Jones Dome for three days of competition.

LATE FOOTBALL PLAYER SCHROEDER REMEMBERED AGAIN AT PARTY The Alumni Office receives a lot of correspondence throughout the year, ranging from inquiries about lost yearbooks to attempts to find long-lost friends to updates on alumni and their growing families. One recent inquiry from Meghann (Thompson) McDonnell ’99 was especially intriguing. Meghann’s uncle, Tim Schroeder ’74, played football at Marian and was the consummate team player, developing his skills as a featured running back. His efforts and work ethic were always recognized as a model for the entire squad. Tim died within a year after his graduation from Marian, leaving his family devastated and teammates stunned. The Marian Athletic Department instituted the Tim Schroeder Memorial Award in his honor and gave the award to deserving athletes from 1975 to 1979. Meghann explained that her grandfather, William Schroeder, Sr., was about to have his 80th birthday and she wanted to give him the Tim Schroeder ’74 plaque as a birthday gift. A replica of the plaque was produced and presented to William Sr. at his birthday party in August.

ONYEMA ’97 SACRIFICES TO BENEFIT OTHERS in his father’s idea. He studied and earned his law degree in 2007 and then passed the bar exam in California. “The plan was to work for a big firm in Los Angeles and live that life, but the appeal of this–to have a meaningful impact this way–was something I didn’t want to pass upon,” Onyema said. “I wake up each morning terrified, but also excited, inspired to do work that will, eventually, cause this hospital to come about. To get kids treated for malaria, people treated for AIDS, mothers to deliver healthy babies. I couldn’t say ‘no’ to being a part of that,” Onyema said. Urging students to do more, he told them to take an hour a week at the start to help a cause. “You would be surprised how much time you have if you are disciplined,” Onyema told a group of students in the school’s theater. Asked by students if he regretted his decision, Onyema said, “No, no I don’t. Someone asked me what type of Rolex they should buy. I said, ‘Why not buy a Timex and donate the rest of the money?’ What’s more important is what you do with your time.” The GEANCO Foundation, named for first names of family members, has raised $500,000 for preliminary engineering and planning work for the hospital to be built between the city of Awka and Nawfia, in the village where his father grew up. “The state government has given us 200 acres for the project,” Onyema said. The hospital will be named Augustine for his father, who still works locally as an obstetrician and gynecologist. But there’s a long way to go. They need an estimated $25 million for the hospital. Onyema is not daunted by that number. He’s confident they'll find the money, and is happy to be traveling around the country, attending fundraisers and driving home the need facing Nigerians. – Excerpts from SouthtownStar, story by Steve Metsch

Afam Onyema ’97 could be hauling in a six-figure salary working at a law firm in Los Angeles. Instead, the 29-year old graduate of Marian Catholic High School, with a law degree from Stanford, makes $60,000 a year as he tours the country seeking donations to build a hospital in his father's homeland of Nigeria. Sometimes, he told Marian Catholic students, you have to make choices and sometimes those choices may be hard for others to understand. But it’s what’s important to you that counts. Onyema spoke to several groups of students at Marian in late October. “It's good to come back home and hopefully share what I learned and inspire people to think more broadly,” Onyema said. He was in Chicago for a conference of Nigerian Americans and happily visited Marian at the invitation of Mary Moffatt, Vice-President for Institutional Advancement. While at Marian, his mother Josephine and his two sisters Ebele ’99 and Ncheta ’02 stopped by to see his presentation. Growing up, he often heard of his father’s dream of building a hospital back home. His father, Godwin, came to America for a medical residency, but stayed because of educational opportunities for his children here. The hospital dream, however, lingered. “Attending Marian Catholic, sparked my sense of service,” Onyema said. Even while attending Harvard University, he began to think more about service, more about helping others than “getting the high paying job.” There, he started a program that provided books to the needy in Nigeria. While studying law at Stanford, Onyema found himself more interested

Liesse Headlines National Merit Honorees Marian Catholic senior Kelly Liesse (Glenwood) has earned Semifinalist status in the 2008 National Merit Scholarship Program. Semifinalists numbering 16,000 nationally now have the opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards, worth $33 million, that will be offered next spring. The nationwide Kelly Liesse ’09 pool of Semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. Overall, Marian had 24 students gain recognition this year in National Merit and National Achievement. “This is another great example of the type of students we have at Marian Catholic and the rigorous college prep curriculum that prepares them for these kinds of successes,” explained Gerry O’Brien, Director of College Counseling. Eleven Marian students earned status as Commended Students (top 50,000 in the nation) in the National Merit Program, two earned recognition as Semifinalists in the National Achievement Scholarship Competition (for Black American High School Students), ten were among 3,000 National Achievement Scholarship Program participants being “referred” to U.S. Colleges and Universities, and one earned recognition as a National Hispanic Scholar. Ranking among the best in the Chicagoland area, Marian Catholic High School recently had 98 students named AP Scholars by the College Board in recognition of exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Exams.

Class of 2008 members Dominic Ortigara (Tinley Park), Timothy Stanis (Hammond, IN) and Alexander Tolish (Flossmoor) qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average grade of 4 or higher on a 5-point scale and grades of 4 or higher on eight of the exams. Marian students, numbering 24, qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction (average of 3.5 on all exams and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams), fifteen more Marian students earned the AP Scholar with Honor Award with an average grade of 3.25 on all exams and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams, and 56 students earned the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more exams with grades of 3 or higher.

The following Marian seniors earned status as Commended Students in the National Merrit Program: (standing left to right) Lauren Denton, Garrett Von Schaumburg, Bryan Golubski, Daniel Anderson, Sean Barry, Jonathan Lamano, Roseann Drosos (sitting left to right) Laura DiLuia, Sarah Kasper, Ayana Worthey, Julie Rzeszutko .

SOCCER PULLS STUNNERS TO WIN REGIONAL

Marilyn Akey

The Marian Catholic men’s soccer team upset two top seeds to win the H-F IHSA Regional championship.

Watch out for the soccer Spartans in the postseason! Following up a string of women’s soccer upsets to reach the IHSA sectional finals last spring, the men’s soccer team was up to the same tricks this fall. Marian captured the HomewoodFlossmoor Class 3A regional crown by upsetting #2 seed Bloom Township (2-1) and #7 seed Lincoln-Way Central (1-0), earning the right to play at home in the Marian Sectional on Spartan Stadium’s new FieldTurf ™. The fall also featured Spartan state qualifiers as senior Keith Haines finished 70th in the IHSA state boys golf tournament and women’s tennis players Teresa Banks ’09 and Hannah Katz ’11 made the grade for a state tournament bid in doubles. Marian also honored two long-time coaches

who announced their retirement. Women’s volleyball coach Marilyn Akey concluded a 13-year head coach and math teacher career prior to the fall season. As alumni parents, Marilyn and husband Mike have been strong supporters of Marian both on the volleyball court and in other areas. Akey earned 287 victories as mentor of Marian’s program, including leading the Spartans to nine regional championships and a Class AA Elite Eight berth in 2002. Ron Guagenti, a Spartan coach in both baseball and football dating back to the late 1970’s, concluded his final football season this fall. A long-time offensive coordinator for the Spartans and science teacher, Guagenti was key contributor in more than 200 football victories, the 2003 Class 4A state championship, and 2000 Chicagoland Prep Bowl title. A fixture in baseball and football since the late 1970’s, Ron Guagenti is surrounded by his family and honored before coaching his final home game at Spartan Stadium.

Golf, table tennis, Notre Dame football, Chicago Cubs, word jumbles VISION FOR MCHS FUTURE:

“I envision three major developments for Marian over the next ten years: “First, Marian’s academics, athletics, fine arts, and nationally recognized Leadership Program, will make Marian Catholic High School the destination high school of choice among junior high students in the Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana areas. “Second, parents and students will come to a full realization of the personal and financial benefits that Marian creates by developing incoming freshmen who have 100% potential into well-rounded student leaders who are 100% kinetic. While $32,000 is an expensive undertaking for a high school education, for many of Marian’s students the education will pay for itself it the long run (often 3, 4, and 5 times over) when taking into account the college credits and extra scholarship money that Marian’s students earn while attending Marian. “Third, I envision Marian strengthening Catholic education at it roots by reaching out through its technology-based initiatives to assist Catholic elementary schools in the educational development of their students.”

Marian Reunion Recap With great help from dozens of reunion committee members, twelve class reunions on three dates within 23 days were facilitated through the Marian Catholic Alumni Office. Planning for the 2008 reunions began almost a year ago with identifying committee members and setting meeting dates. Combining classes for reunions was first done successfully last year in 2007 with the classes of ’62, ’67, ’72, ’77, ’82, ’87, ’97 and ’02 celebrating together on one night. The Marian Catholic Leadership Center has proven to be the perfect venue for class reunions, not only because it is “home,” but also because it is so beautiful that it rivals many hotel grand ballrooms in the Southland. Add to that a phenomenal sound system and five 60” plasma screens for viewing each class’ senior pictures; and voila, instant reunion party. ’62

This year, the classes of ’68, ’73, ’78, and ’88 had their reunions on September 5, the Founding Four classes of ’62, ’63, ’64 and ’65 celebrated September 12 and 13, while the classes of ’83, ’93, ’98 and ’03 gathered over Homecoming weekend on September 27. Photos of the reunions can be viewed on the Marian Catholic website by clicking on Alumni, then Reunions. Dates for reunions in 2009 are beginning to firm up. If you are a graduate of 1969, 1974, 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994, 1999 or 2004 and want to help locate and notify your classmates of their upcoming reunion, please call or email the Alumni Office (708-756-9775) cswanson@marianchs.com.

Marian Catholic 50th Anniversary Gala SAVE -THE - DATE

April 25, 2009

A host committee is being formed with the help of the Advancement Office and Big City Events Coordinator, Susan Lewandowski Cordogan ’92. The Marian Catholic 50th Anniversary Gala on April 25, 2009 will cap a year of celebration and memories. Set in the beautiful School of the Art Institute Ballroom on Michigan Avenue, the 50th Gala promises to be an evening filled with music, memories and dancing as we celebrate Marian Catholic’s first fifty years. Like many Marian gatherings, the evening will start with a 4:30 p.m. Mass at Lewis Chapel on the DePaul University campus, a short walk from the party. Then, as guests are welcomed into the impressive School of the Art Institute Ballroom with flags and colors flying, they will be whisked up to the mezzanine level to peruse a silent auction and enjoy cocktails before dinner while listening to some of Marian’s finest musicians, both current students and alumni. A short program announcing the Dominican Legacy Pillar Award honorees will take place while dinner is served at elegantly decorated tables. Dancing through the decades will continue well into the evening with music provided by the Dennis Keith Experience. If you’d like to put on your best party clothes, help wear the finish off of the ballroom floor and join in the 50th Gala celebration, please contact the Marian Advancement Office. For those coming from out of town, great accommodations have been reserved at the Hyatt Regency Chicago and Club Quarters on Wacker, and to get the weekend started right, a Friday, April 24, 2009 welcoming gathering is being planned in conjunction with the Metro Chicago Alumni and Friends group. Location to be determined, but rest assured, Marian knows how to throw a party! For more information or to request an invitation, please call Carol Burke Swanson ’81 (708-755-6579).

FACULTY REUNION JOINS GREAT EDUCATORS, STORIES On behalf of Sr. Mary Blaise, O.P., Mary Margaret Flanagan, myself (Allen Marazas) and the entire 50th Anniversary faculty reunion committee I would like to express our absolute delight at the success of the gathering of current and former Marian faculty and staff held the Friday night of the 50th Anniversary kick-off weekend. We also would like to thank Joe ’67 and Sue ’67 Beaudry and the 50th Anniversary Steering Committee for its support. And a very big thank you to Sr. Kathleen Anne Tait, O.P., Sr. Judine Hilbing, O.P., Sr. Mary Paul McCaughey, O.P. ’67, Carol Burke Swanson ’81, Gail Young, Sue Sheehan Trump ’75, Dave Mattio ’66, Aurelio’s Pizza and Sr. M. Karla Fritz, O.P. and Country House for their help in making that evening Allen Marazas ’64 possible. It was a night to remember. We hosted over 200 current and former faculty and spouses in the West Gym lobby for an evening of remembrance, pizza and, I believe, there was some malt beverage involved. Former faculty members from every decade were Marianne LaBanca Kienker, Bob Stirzen, Mary Margaret Flanagan, Bob Bergstrom, present and friendships were remembered and renewed. and Kathy McGrath

A number of those present expressed the wish that we could do it again. Well, we can. Every year there is an alumni reception after the Homecoming football game. It is a gathering of alumni at which all faculty have always been welcome, and that certainly includes all our former faculty and staff. If there was a desire on the part of the faculty to meet separately for part of that evening, it definitely could be arranged. Now that we have the means to contact so many of our former faculty, we can keep them informed of any plans that might include them. If you know of a former faculty member that we have not been in touch with please help us add their name to our data base. This information can be sent to Marian Catholic by phone 708-755-6579, fax 708-756-9759, or email mflanagan@marianchs.com. It was truly a wonderful evening and we hope to continue a close relationship with our “alumni” faculty. It would be helpful in planning if we had some idea of how much interest there would be in such a gathering annually or every few years. A contact, note, email or phone call indicating your interest would be of great assistance in preparing for such future events. We will continue to invite our current faculty as well to any of these gatherings. – Allen Marazas ’64

SR. MARION HEADS ARCHIVES PROJECT precious few of the earliest copies, but thanks to her diligent attention, five secured, archival copies of each Megaphone are stored here at school. The many, many extra copies of the Megaphone have been displayed and given away at class reunions this fall, much to the delight of attendees. Anniversaries naturally bring out the “history talk” and stories in all of us, so in an effort to coordinate a true Marian Archive, the MCHS Library has graciously offered an 11 x 13 room to house our history. There are the aforementioned Megaphones, tubs and tubs of photos taken of everything over the last 50 years, scrapbooks made by the Mothers Club and other parents, and copies of almost every yearbook since 1962. Unfortunately, like your great aunt Sally’s attic, our history is crammed into a small space and is in urgent need of attention and organization. The archives room has chrome wire shelving (for sufficient air circulation) along with a table and a couple of comfortable chairs for those who wish to linger among the archives. If you were a writer for the Megaphone, worked on the yearbook staff, or simply have an interest in helping to preserve Marian’s history, please contact the Alumni Office (708) 756-9770. We’re also looking for a few additional yearbook copies from 1962 through 1972 if you’re willing to donate them. History: We all have one, let’s preserve our Spartan heritage.

Based on the great attendance and enthusiasm of the public party on September 6, everyone in the Marian Catholic family knows that 2008-2009 is our 50th Anniversary year. The kickoff to the year-long celebration on September 6 brought hundreds of visitors back on campus for tours, reminiscing and catching up with friends. One of our Dominican Sisters, Sr. Marion Sitkiewitz, nearly single-handedly found and cataloged every issue of the school newspaper, Megaphone, over the past couple years and proudly displayed them in the decade themed hallways. CURRENT STUDENT WLOS COVERS OBAMA RALLY – By Joe Wlos ’09

When I was selected by Scholastic Publishing Company to join their Kid’s Press Corps, I had no idea what kind of opportunities would await me. Barack Obama was still the Junior Senator from Illinois and I was still in grade school. After three years of writing for Scholastic’s website, my editor gave me the assignment of a lifetime; I was going to cover Obama’s election night rally at Joe Wlos ’09 Grant Park with hundreds of other journalists from around the world. I missed school that day, arriving in Chicago after interviewing people at Marian’s polls and watching my mom vote. The press area was very close to Obama’s podium and to enter I had to show the Secret Service my credentials, which seemed like a golden ticket. The press area was awash with reporters and famous faces. I was competing with the best journalists in the world for election night stories. I had luck on my side. Late in the night, I ran into Oprah Winfrey in the concession area. I joined the paparazzi and got some amazing quotes for Scholastic’s online blog. When CNN announced that Obama won, the crowd thundered and the anticipation turned into jubilation. I staked out a spot where the podium was visible. As the president-elect started his speech, chills ran down my spine; I was witnessing history! This opportunity, along with my other work for Scholastic, has helped shape my life. I feel fortunate and grateful to have had these experiences as a part of my education. Later in life, I’d like to pay it forward by giving others the experiences they need to broaden horizons and learn new things.

On November 1, Marian Catholic hosted the Dedication of a Grand ‘Ol Maple Tree with the Hamilton Family in memory of George Hamilton. This dedication was to join family and friends to remember George, who provided roots and wings for so many early years of Marian Catholic. The tree that the family members are standing next to was planted and cared for by George 50 years ago. EMIG COLLABORATES WITH EDUCATORS ON ISRAEL CURRICULUM TRIP Marian Catholic Theology teacher Mary Emig recently joined other teachers of the Archdiocese of Chicago to accompany Esther Hicks of the Office of Catholic Schools-Israel to develop a curriculum on “Modern Israel: Holy Land and Democratic State” as the nation celebrates its 60th year as a free democracy. The project is a collaborative effort between the Chicago Archdiocese Office of Catholic Schools with the Office for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs and the Jewish United Fund with The Jewish Federation of Chicago to improve and further Catholic and Jewish relations and understanding between the two religions and nations. “We often had meals with historians, journalists, and high school students exploring the different views and facets of the Israel-Palestinian question, as well as the very existence of Israel itself,” said Emig. There were also visits with government officials and touring of communities such as Fassoutta, a Christian town in northern Israel. The town has been working with the Archdiocese of Chicago, which has sponsored a computer lab for students there. “Wherever we went, such as exploring the neighborhoods of Fassoutta, the hospitality of the people of the Middle East was heartwarming,” Emig explained. Emig’s highest and most memorable moments were visiting Yad Vashem and joining an Israeli family of Jerusalem for Friday night Shabbat. Yad Vashem is the Holocaust Museum of Jerusalem. “It is an awe-inspiring nation whose existence is so vital to the Middle East, and the trip was so incredible and fantastic,” she said.

When doctors told Kelly (Thompson) Harmsen ’84 that her son, Joshua, 2, had amblyopia or lazy eye, she couldn’t imagine keeping an eye patch on him for three hours a day. He pulled it off after about 30 seconds. But when Joshua saw a cartoon with a patch-wearing pirate, he took his own patch out of the drawer and tried to put it on. That gave his mom an idea: Make it fun. Kelly took socks, added eye patches and had her husband, Allen videotape the makeshift puppets. And so began the idea for the “Eye Patch Kids,” a DVD of singing puppets she sells to motivate children to wear their eye patches. With puppets, cartoons and celebrities wearing glasses and eye patches, children today can see that eyewear doesn’t have to look ugly or scary. Joshua is now 8 and still wears an eye patch for about an hour three days a week. For more information and an introduction to the “Eye Patch Kids” characters, visit Kelly’s website www.bjortandcompany.com.

The Tulsa-based company is one of two business concepts that earlier won this year’s Governor’s Cup Challenge. Witt and her sole partner, Fernando Bermudez are applying for a matching funds grant from the state of Oklahoma to move into the production phase of the business. Witt received her master’s degree in business administration this summer.
