For its excellence in educating young men and women, Marian Catholic High School was named one of the Top 50 Catholic High Schools in the United States by the Catholic High School Honor Roll in 2004 and 2006. Excellence is demonstrated as both men’s and women’s athletics excel in their field (see page 7 for partial summary). Coaches and members of athletic teams will be available in the West Gym during the Open House to answer questions. For those interested in the Fine Arts, the Marian Catholic 7-time Bands of America Grand Nationals Champion and 27-time state champion in class Marching Band will show a video of the 2006 performance; the madrigal choir and four-year undefeated in Catholic

ENGLISH TEACHER MARTIN AUTHORS SECOND HISTORICAL NOVEL but who thought the potential audience too small. Martin persisted and self-published Push Not the River in 2001 to glowing reviews and enthusiastic word of mouth. Sister Mary Paul was the first to read the novel, devouring it in a day and a half and later suggesting that Martin have his classes read it. The novel was well received. “And I went to my core audience, too,” Martin explains. “The Polish community welcomed both me and the book with open arms. I’ve had people come up and thank me for informing them, in a fascinating way, of the Constitution and the struggle for democratic reform. But it seems that Push Not the River was most successful in getting across the Polish spirit, one that triumphs despite setbacks, invasions, and the many attempts by other nations to wipe it from the map.” Martin was most touched when a young Polish couple from Madison, Wisconsin profusely thanked him for writing the book, telling him that they loved the story so much that they named their first son after Jan Micha, the baby born in Push Not the River. Martin is of Irish and Norwegian descent, but his interest in Polish history began in 1976 when his good friend John Stelnicki asked him to look at the diary of his ancestor. It was a life-altering occasion for Martin. Just recently, Martin has been designated a Gold Medal recipient by The American Institute of Polish Culture. The event will take place in Miami on January 27th. Previous recipients include Lech Walesa, James Michener, and Senator Barbara Mikulski. The success of the self-published edition awakened St. Martin’s Press to the wide appeal of Anna Maria’s compelling story with its themes of love and revenge, patriotism and treason, strength and survival, prompting them to put out their own edition and ask for a sequel. In October of 2004 the St. Martin’s edition won the prestigious recommendation of BOOKSENSE, a consortium of 1200 independent booksellers. Additionally, in 2005 BOOKSENSE placed Push Not the River on their annual list of most recommended books for book clubs. And in August of 2006, Against a Crimson Sky also won the coveted BOOKSENSE recommendation. Marian Catholic hosted a booksigning for Jim in 2001 and one for his more recent book on Tuesday, November 7th. He expressed his sincere gratitude to the school community, the Faculty Council and the Mothers Club.

James Conroyd Martin

The prestigious St. Martin’s Press has recently published Against a Crimson Sky, the second novel by long-time English teacher James Martin. The first, Push Not the River was based on the writings of Countess Anna Maria Berezowska who started her diary in 1791 at the age of seventeen when both her personal life and the political situation in Poland began to unravel. Martin began work with the diary in 1976, balancing and integrating Anna’s very personal odyssey with the rise and fall of the ill-fated Third of May Constitution. Critics have cited Martin’s novel as having the sweep of stories like Gone with the Wind and Doctor Zhivago. “But Anna’s story is true,” Martin is quick to point out. “It’s about a woman’s incredible odyssey and survival.” The highly acclaimed follow-up to the story, Against a Crimson Sky, “is a sequel,” Martin says, “but one that can stand alone.” The follow-up takes the characters twenty years into the fascinating Napoleonic era, culminating in French and Polish forces marching into and retreating from Moscow. Publishers Weekly called it an “entertaining sequel,” saying that readers “will find much to enjoy in this sprawling epic.” The author’s long struggle to bring the novel to the public involved numerous agents, editors, and publishers who found value in the work,

USB flash drives for sale!

A N N UA L F U N D / P H O N AT H O N The Annual Fund (of which Phonathon is a major part) supports day-to-day activities of the school. All monies address human concerns, whether it be for students, parents or staff. In almost fifty years of “Teaching Scholars with a Soul,” no student has paid the full cost of a Marian Catholic education. Tuition has always been less than the actual per pupil cost.

Mr. Scanlon's Business Economics class is selling custom USB flash drives for only $18. The drives are 128 MB (approximately equal to 90 floppy disks), and they are compatable with all computers. The Spartan logo and Marian Catholic are imprinted on one side. These drives enable students to move documents, worksheets and presentations between home and school and are large enough to back up their entire network folder from Marian.

This “gap” between actual cost and tuition paid has been met through the Annual Fund appeal. This year is no different and your support is again needed. The Parent Phonathon (parent volunteers calling current and alumni parents) will be held January 28-30. The Student Phonathon (students calling alumni) will be held February 11-12.

Please contact Mr. Scanlon at sscanlon@marianchs.com if you are interested in purchasing a flash drive for yourself or your student.

M A R I A N T E A M S E X C E L O N G O L F C O U R S E , G R I D I RO N Fore! Success on the golf course was contagious this fall, as a second place in state finish for the Marian women in 2005 was followed up by top state performances from both the men and women in 2006. Both teams followed up brilliant regular seasons by rolling through the postseason. The women added to their trophy collection with conference, regional and sectional crowns, nearly capturing another state trophy with a fourth-place state finish. The men turned in Marian’s best finish in school history with an 11th-place state finish. “The men’s and women’s teams had outstanding seasons, highlighted by outstanding state finishes and each team featured a conference champion in Samantha Sloan ’08 and Ben Nichele ’08,” said Jim Mendenhall, who has guided the men’s team for 14 seasons. Each team had first-place and runner-up finishes in invitationals and the women also won regional and sectional championships. Seniors who completed outstanding golf careers included Kate Kotora, Lauren Pascarella, Joe Barker, Dan Karwowski, Kyle Panici, Anthony Rosati, Tom Scrementi and Mike Vanover. “There was much camaraderie between the teams as we competed in a Ryder Cup competition that ended in a tie. Both teams are looking forward to next season,”said Mendenhall. The contagious trend of success translated to the football field, as the Spartans earned their first IHSA playoff berth since 2003.

Marian golfer Ryan Maksimik eyes up a shot during a very successful men’s season (11th at the IHSA state tourney).

Marian junior Sammi Sloan finished fourth at the IHSA state tourney.

Winning five of its last six regular-season games, Marian opened the playoffs with a revenge victory over Homewood-Flossmoor in overtime. The Spartans turned the tables on a 42-28 season-opening loss to the Vikings by winning a thrilling 20-14 playoff contest in overtime. It was no surprise that this group brought success as the 2006 seniors posted a perfect 9-0 ESCC record as freshmen, led by this fall’s co-ESCC Players of the Year Cliffton Gordon (Offense) and Josh Howe (Defense). Running back Gordon finished second on Marian’s all-time charts for both single-season

rushing (1,958 yards) and career rushing (3,274). More good news is forecasted for the winter season, where men’s basketball will try to build on a school-record 22-win campaign and Marian’s second IHSA regional crown in school history. Meanwhile, the women’s basketball team got good news even before it started its bid for a fifth Elite Eight visit in six years. The Marian women’s squad was ranked as the area’s pre-season No. 1 team in the Illinois Times, Daily Southtown and Star Newspapers.

PERKOVICH TANDEM HITS NATIONAL RANKINGS John A. Perkovich, Marian teacher since 1977, and his son, John B. Perkovich ’92, began playing the national USTA Father-Son tournament circuit last year. They achieved a ranking of 77th in the country and were the only father-son team from Indiana ranked nationally. For 25 years, John “A.” was Marian’s varsity tennis coach. He is currently Director of Tennis for Briar Ridge Country Club in Schererville, Indiana. John “B.” is a certified PTR tennis pro and head pro at Briar Ridge. He is also the head girl’s varsity coach at Andrean Catholic High School in Merrillville, Indiana. Their competitions have taken them to Cincinnati, Ohio, Cherry Hills, New Jersey and LaJolla, California.

Self sacrifice and helping others. Helping others in the business of helping others. It’s a banner that applies to all of the Marian Catholic High School Class of 2007 Hall of Famers. The prestigious class includes four Marian Catholic alumni and a couple with a staggering resume of service to family and school community. All have contributed greatly during their careers at and beyond Marian, in all cases advancing near the top level of their fields. While medicine may be the theme for most of the Marian Hall of Fame inductees on February 28, 2007 at Olympia Fields Country Club, this group goes well beyond the concept of treating others. Through expertise, education and experience, it’s a group that elicits the Dominican tradition by educating the teachers and preparing leaders in their fields.

grounding at the time, I certainly do now.” Formerly a surgeon for the United States Air Force, Bendrick also remains a respected teacher in his field. He’s currently an instructor at both the University of Southern California and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. His work involves the health of all in his field, as well as being in the life-saving business. That allows Bendrick to keep many things in perspective. “You do not know what the future holds,” warned Bendrick, who joined siblings, Cathleen ’74 and John ’81, at Marian. “Car wrecks, cancers, deaths, disability, substance abuse, lawsuits, etc., all happen. They are not fun to talk about, but they are a fact of life, and people on the ‘fast-track’ to success rarely have time for you when you’re no longer able to keep up with them. Adhere to the faith and the Church, no matter how much of a success or a failure you might become. “In fact, it is more difficult to see one’s need for faith when things are going well, than when they are not. Read from Scripture and pray regularly. Attend Mass faithfully; practice charity and kindness in what you do. Allow God to use you and your talents in whatever way he sees fit. Follow Christ’s agenda, not your own. If you do these things, you will always be a success.”

position as Staff Nurse in the Cardiopulmonary Rehab/Wellness/Cardiac Telemetry Unit at Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey. While raising children Gabrielle (age 8) and Dominick (5) with husband Alan Angellotti ’85, Mary Ann finds time to advance in her career and continue her ambition of helping others. "Live your dream, work hard, serve others and make your own opportunities," Angellotti advises others. "My strong family bond and support can be attributed to my success. Also, the privilege of being a member of fabulous 'teams' throughout my career and being surrounded by supportive and superb coaches have assisted as well. "Having people believe in you goes a long way. Always focus on the positive."

Alumnus of the Year Gregg Bendrick ’80 is in the medical field, yet his influence spans the globe and beyond. Owning degrees from the University of Chicago and University of Texas, Bendrick currently serves as Chief Medical Officer of the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base. Among many responsibilities, Bendrick is the Designated Flight Surgeon and Senior Aviation Medical Examiner performing FAA flight physicals on NASA research pilots. He interacts closely with Life Support, Operations and Flight Safety to reduce the overall health risk of flight research at the center. Through his highly technical work and on-call emergency work with space shuttles, Bendrick is hands-on with most of the nation’s most significant space research. Yet, he is able to take much of his work right in stride, in large part because of a strong background that began at Marian Catholic. “Marian gave me the moral compass by which to navigate my life,” Bendrick explained. “In this day and age it is very easy to become confused and even disoriented with regard to right and wrong, good and bad. How can anyone make any type of decision unless they are using some sort of standard by which to judge the rightness or wrongness of that decision? Marian Catholic High School gave me this moral compass by inculcating the teachings and practices of the Catholic Church in all areas of academics. Though I did not appreciate such

She put into practice where her career path has taken her as an athlete at Marian Catholic and the University of Michigan, and has continued to be a true “practice what you preach” person in her adult life. As a pioneer athlete at Marian, Angellotti led the Spartans to the school's first IHSA trophy, a third-place in softball in 1985. She went on to a very successful softball career at the University of Michigan, where she helped lead the Wolverines to 142 victories and three Big 10 runner-up finishes in four years. In her athletic career, Angellotti was characterized for her work ethic and heart. So it's no surprise her career path has taken her to a position of helping others in mending hearts and cardiac health. Following 11 years in several different positions in cardiology at St. James HospitalOlympia Fields/O.F. Regional Osteopathic Medical Center, Angellotti moved to her current 10

Marian's Fine Arts Achievement Award winner also has impressive ties in sports. As the Sports Anchor at WNDU-TV Channel 16, in South Bend, Ind., Jim McAteer ’89 has won numerous Associated Press and Society of Professional Journalists awards for his sports feature stories. As Marian is on the verge of enhancing broadcasting opportunities for students through its The Courage to Lead Campaign, McAteer still recalled a strong preparation Marian provided him at a time of minimal mass media offerings. "I think the Marian Catholic experience for me is one of those things that, as it's happening, you don't really understand it or appreciate it. Marian taught me there's a certain way to treat people, how to conduct yourself, how to help people, and how to challenge yourself. "At Marian, I was surrounded by good people,' teachers who cared, students who worked hard, and in general, a Marian community that does things the right way. It reminds me of the University of Notre Dame, at the high school level." A graduate of St. Mary's University in Winona, Minn., McAteer has provided live coverage of some of the biggest sports stories in Indiana sports, including Bob Knight at Indiana and Lou Holtz at Notre Dame. He won an Edward R. Murrow award for his "Track Star" story, where he followed the path of a troubled Benton Harbor teen turned star track athlete. "One of the best moments has to be flying to South Carolina to talk with Lou Holtz," recalled McAteer, who also watched siblings Sheri, Kelly and Dan graduate from Marian.

Connor and Anne Loesch

"One of the worst days was covering the Cubs' debacle in game six of the NLCS. It still hurts to see that eighth inning. They were five outs from the World Series!" Talk about a family of World Series proportions- look no further than that of Connor and Anne Loesch. This year's Lifetime Achievement Award winners have plenty of which to be proud with their seven children. Marty ’83 completed four degrees at Notre Dame and is now legal counsel for the Swinomish Indian Tribe. Maria ’84 (St. Norbert’s, Loyola) serves as office manager for husband Craig, a chiropractor. Carl ’86 (Notre Dame) serves as principal at Marian High School in Mishawaka, Ind. Katie ’88 (Indiana, Rice) works in human resources for Master Spas and occasionally plays with the Ford Wayne Philharmonic and Indianapolis Symphony. Matthew ’91 (Notre Dame) is a certified professional engineer for the City of San Jose, Calif. Anne ’93 (Kalamazoo College, Loyola) works as a school psychologist in Kalamazoo, Mich. Finally, John ’97 (Indiana) is a chartered financial analyst and is studying for his MBA at Notre Dame. Resumes like that don’t come by accident… more through tremendous guidance and examples by parents. When Marty arrived at Marian in 1979, Connor and Anne Loesch became involved for the duration. “Marian had a very positive influence on every aspect of the lives of our children,” Anne Loesch explained. “Their spiritual lives were influenced in academic courses, the opportunities for service work, the example of priests and Sisters they met, the retreat programs offered and participated in, and other students from families with values similar to their own. “Marian also has had a positive influence on us as parents and as a faculty member. We were part of the Marian Family that stressed commitment to service and family, and Christian values in all aspects of life.” The actions of Connor and Anne Loesch spoke for themselves. Connor served as a member of the Lay Advisory Board and stepped up as a leader for the Partnership 2000 Capital Campaign. Anne worked in the Math department from 1984 to 2000, while both were regulars on various committees and as boosters for Athletics and Band.

Mary (Jensen) Camp ’83

Following education at Drake University and the University of Georgia (Doctor of Pharmacy), Spirit of Marian awardee Mary Jensen Camp ’83 began a career in pharmacy. Since becoming a Hematology/Oncology Specialty Resident at Emory University in 1993, Camp began a fast track in research, writing and specialty work to the top of her field. She is currently Director of Scientific Services at Educational Concepts Group in Atlanta. Camp’s current position requires numerous public speaking encounters, where she has addressed “Chronic and Cancer Pain Management,” and “Update on Breast and Ovarian Cancer,” among several topics. Much of Camp’s drive to advance in her field comes from her high school experience. “Marian Catholic set the foundation for the person I am today,” Camp explained. “My academic drive and success, not only in college and graduate school, but every day, can be attributed to my learned experiences from MCHS. My first real opportunities to give back to my community occurred in my high school years as did my real desire for learning and excelling academically. It was through support of the teachers, as well as support from a number of key friendships of like-minded people, that allowed me to see my potential for academic achievement. “When I started at Marian, I was fine with being average, doing what needed to be done and doing it without really pushing myself. By my junior and senior years, I was very driven to unleash my academic potential and really push myself for excellence. This translated into my college and graduate school years where I graduated with top honors and in the top of my class as well as in my current career endeavors where I continually strive for excellence.” Camp has also been published on several occasions through studies, abstracts and handbooks. She considers her call to help others and prepare society for the future a natural one. “You just have to be true to yourself and to listen to your inner being,” said Camp, one of four to attend Marian- Susan ’80, Julie ’82 and Robert ’89. “I think we miss so much if we try to be someone or something we are not. We are so blessed to have a God that forgives us for all of our wrong doings and frees us from the burdens we carry; how else will we want to become better and better.”

Semifinalists numbering 16,000 nationally now have the opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards, worth $33 million, that will be offered next spring. To be a Finalist, students must have an academic record of very high performance, be endorsed and recommended by the school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier qualifying test performance. More than 1.4 million juniors in nearly 21,000 high schools entered the 2007 National Merit Program by taking the 2005 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). The nationwide pool of Semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. Ten Marian seniors also earned status as Commended Students (top 50,000 in the nation) in the National Merit Program, including Katherine Gray (Oak Forest), Ashley Gunville (Olympia Fields), Melissa Harmon (Crete), Caitlin Listro (Crete), Shannon McGuire (Matteson), Elizabeth Nagel (Flossmoor), Eric Pedone (Tinley Park), Matt Rossbach (Crete), Jasmin Simmons (Matteson) and Timothy

Spear (Mokena). Five students earned recognition as Semifinalists in the National Achievement Scholarship Competition. They rank among more than 1,600 high school seniors named Semifinalists in the 43rd annual program, a competition for Black American High School Students. Marian students include Melissa Locke (University Park), Jasmin Simmons (Matteson), Corey White (Homewood), Jared White (Homewood) and Michael Whittaker (Olympia Fields). Seven Marian Catholic High School seniors are among 3,000 National Achievement Scholarship Program participants being "referred" to U.S. Colleges and Universities. Marian referred students include Briana Briscoe (Crete), Chris Chaisson (Flossmoor), Steven Dudley (Richton Park), Matthew Harper (Harvey), Jacquelin Magby (Dolton), Laurence Moss (Country Club Hills) and Rashaunah Williams (South Holland). More than 130,000 African-American students took the 2005 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) to enter the program. The 3,000 referred students are in the top five percent of students testing. The students will be referred to more than 1,500 colleges and universities.
