FAT H E R O ’ M A R A B R I N G S F R E S H P E R S P E C T I V E TO M A R I A N Years of experience, mixed with a fresh perspective. A shoulder when needed or a closer connection with faith for students. Filling a void of nearly two decades on the Marian Catholic campus. When Fr. William O’Mara retired from St. Elizabeth Seton Parish in Orland Hills and decided to devote himself to the students of Marian Catholic, 1,675 students gained the benefit of all of the above. “I enjoy the liveliness, enthusiasm and energy of highschool-age kids,” explained O’Mara, who actually founded the new Orland Hills Parish. “They’re searching for things in a lot of ways and I believe high school represents some of the most important years of their lives. I really like to see the development of friendships and a Catholic identity.

“I hope to further the sacramental involvement and that can be accomplished much more easily with a priest on staff. It’s good for the kids to have a priest’s presence. There are a lot of great people to talk with in Campus Ministry, but many students are more accustomed to talking with a priest from their parish experiences. “I also want to be here to give a healthy image of the priesthood and what we do.”

Fr. William O’Mara Chaplain

“I also really enjoy going to the games, the events and just talking with the kids.”

To Marian, O’Mara brings a wealth of knowledge and a strong diversity in his experiences. During the 1960’s and early 1970’s, he served as a teacher, athletic director and coach for Quigley Seminary in Chicago.

O’Mara is the first full-time chaplain on campus at Marian since the late Fr. John Lambert, O.S.A., who worked in Guidance and Campus Ministry through the 1984-85 school year.

O’Mara already has added a 7:00 a.m. Mass for students and faculty, but there’s more to come.

O’Mara actually returns to some of his roots. His first assignment in 1958 was to Infant Jesus of Prague in Flossmoor, where he occasionally helped at Marian for Masses and reconciliation. Other assignments have taken him to Florida and Texas, but O’Mara has been back in the South Suburbs since returning to serve as an associate at St. James Parish (Sauk Village) in 1986. While he fills a role Marian has longed for, O’Mara is not going to try to change the complexion of Campus Ministry. “I’m not going to replace anyone, I just want to provide an added dimension,” O’Mara said. “As I get to know more of the kids, I will get more involved.

While a welcome presence is atop O’Mara’s priority list, he also wants to see an increase in reconciliation opportunities, some involvement with coaches and athletic teams, additional activities during the Advent season and consistent invitations to attend Mass. “I hope we can encourage students to see their faith as a very meaningful part of everything they do,” O’Mara explained. “Parents send students here for the good discipline and education, but we also want to give them some theology. “Kids are searching for a lot of things and it’s important for us to help them make decisions. We want to continue the faith development to help them make wise decisions––especially in high school and soon in college when they are making more decisions on their own.”

H A L L O F FA M E C L A S S E P I TO M I Z E S S P I R I T It’s no secret why the Class of 2005 Alumni Association Hall of Fame inductees are something special. While their names will be listed under four categories that include an array of impressive members of the Marian Catholic family, this group depicts characteristics of the Hall of Fame criteria.

Bishop Frank Kane, awardee Sr. M. Paul McCaughey, O.P. ’67 and Bishop Joseph Perry chat at the American Catholic Press Awards Banquet. Our MCHS president was the first woman recognized by ACP.

The new group of five includes an alumnus who deserves recognition in the United States’ Hall of Fame, a former coach who helped mold Marian for decades to come, a fine arts recipient who now excels in the world of sports, and an alumni couple who serve as perfect representatives of Marian in any Hall of Fame category. Turn to page 8 for a look at the Hall of Fame Class of 2005.

WOMEN’S GOLF HAS RECORD - SETTING FALL “These kids can play.” With three freshmen helping to lead the charge, Marian Catholic’s women’s golf team produced the most amazing season in school history to highlight the fall sports season. With a mix of veteran golfers, the “kiddie korps” and a coach from the South Suburbs’ first family of golf, the Spartan women’s golf team reached heights never before seen at Marian. En route to the school’s first IHSA Regional championship, Marian also compiled a 16-0 dual meet record and won both the ESCC regular season crown and post-season tournament. One of the freshmen, Samantha Sloan, set the stage for a great future with the individual ESCC championship, the regional championship and a tie for 68th place at the IHSA state tournament. “It was my absolute pleasure to work with such a great group of girls this season,” Spartan coach Linda Gilley said. “This was a serious team with specific goals. Their dedication and hard work showed in the accomplishments of an undefeated dual meet record, ESCC champion, an unprecedented five players named all-conference, regional champion, and taking our first individual downstate.

State qualifying freshman Sammi Sloan putts on her way to winning the IHSA regional crown. “We look forward to a bright season next year, as we strive to take the next big step, getting the team to state!”

While Sloan was joined by newcomers Ann Vrdolyak and coach’s daughter Meg Gilley, upperclassmen experience also molded the chemistry for a perfect regular-season campaign. Senior Stephanie Pascarella provided excellent leadership, while juniors Lindsey Haines and Jill Nicholas played big roles in the post-season. The remainder of Marian’s post-season roster included junior Shayne Cleary and sophomore Lauren Pascarella. The Marian men’s golf team also made its mark this fall as the Spartans captured second place in the ESCC tournament hosted by Marian at Glenwoodie. A pair of Spartans also made the state tournament cut, senior Dean Calara and junior Luke Marthaler. Women’s tennis gained its stage at the state tourney level, as well, in senior Tifany Hoyne who qualified by capturing first place in singles at the Lincoln-Way East Sectional. Marian also earned first place this fall at the Joliet Township Invitational. Cross country had good news of its own, as junior John Walter finished 14th overall at the Rich East Sectional to become the first male to qualify for the IHSA state meet since 1964. Both the men’s and women’s teams qualified for sectional competition, highlighted by a regional championship for the women at the Crete-Monee Regional. Katie Stillman led the lady Spartans with a second-place regional finish, John Walter captured second place in the men’s race. Golf team members Meg Gilley, Sammi Sloan, Lauren Pascarella, Lindsey Haines and Ann Vrdolyak helped lead Marian to a record-setting season.

SOFTBALL CLASSIC A MARIAN REUNION With more than 13,000 alumni, Marian Catholic has reunions of all varieties popping up at all times of the year and in all regions of the country.

“Marian has always carried a strong name when it comes to high school softball, but it’s also great to see that so many colleges have gained the same respect in recruiting Marian athletes. They’re a big part of what make this fall tournament so successful.”

One reunion not on the regular schedule, but an event that could certainly qualify, is the Chicagoland Fall Classic, a college softball tournament held each September in Orland Park. The brainchild of former Marian Catholic and Bradley University coach Stefanie (Guillen) McAllister ’85, the tournament currently assembles 27 college teams from throughout the Midwest. McAllister’s goal was to bring great competition back to one of the nation’s “hotbeds” of softball, but it has also turned into a reunion of sorts.

Tournament champion Wisconsin-Parkside featured a former Spartan in Angela Marshall ’04. Other Marian representatives in the 2004 CFC included: Indiana’s Rachel Carlson ’04, Stephanie (Guillen) McAllister ’85 Kankakee’s Ryan Thomas ’04, Robert Morris’ Kristy Dawson ’00, Western Illinois’ Christine Drankiewicz ’03 and Illinois trainer Sarah Spiller ’01.

Most of the teams showcase several south suburban products, including a very strong representation from Marian Catholic. “It’s great to come back each year and see so many Marian friends from so many different eras of softball,” explained McAllister, who helped lead the Spartans to the school’s first IHSA state trophy in 1985 and led Marian softball back to the Sweet 16 as a coach in 1994. “You can see Marian athletes on virtually all of the five fields at one time, plus alumni are involved in the tournament organization and coaching staffs. Even Marian alumni parents who haven’t had kids playing in years come back each fall to support the tournament and renew friendships. It’s a homecoming event for a lot of people, but even more so for Marian Catholic products.”

Current Marian trainers Kim Blackwell and Josh Lamont also got into the act. With a three-year mark of 96-19 and a Sweet 16 appearance in 2004, Marian softball hopes to keep the Spartan Spirit alive at McAllister’s CFC Tournament for years to come.

With similar representation each year, the 2004 CFC included more than 15 participants with Marian ties, as well as dozens of parents and fans. McAllister has husband Eric in the act, as well as most of her family. Sister, Kara Guillen ’90, designs the tournament program which is supported by Concept Printers and Terry and Pam Murphy, parents of Tara (Murphy) Singler ’93.

DECEMBER 5: EXPERIENCE OPEN HOUSE

Coaching staffs this year included former Marian head coach Donna DiBiase, now the assistant at Illinois, and Kelly Redican ’00, a graduate assistant at Northern Illinois. Kathryn Gleason ’92, a Marian Alumni Association Hall of Famer like McAllister, was at the tourney on the Purdue coaching staff before taking an assistant job at Michigan State this year. Nicole Barker ’03 plays for St. Xavier at the 2004 Chicagoland Fall Classic.

Marian Associate Athletic Director and former softball coach Kevin Kelly ’80 coordinates the umpires for the tournament and current Spartan softball coaches Kerri ’96 and Cristin ’99 Evans have been involved in the tournament both as players and organizers. McAllister is a graduate of St. Xavier University which happened to have the strongest Marian contingent this year. The Cougars put together a 4-1 record in the tourney thanks to help from twins Marie and Nicole Barker ’03 ’03 and pitchers Nicolle Bartels ’04 and Jill Hope ’04.

No other Chicago area Catholic High School can make the claim of 46 years of co-education. Marian Catholic Recruitment Corps members (boys and girls) do their part to prepare for the 2004 Open House on December 5 (11a.m. - 2p.m.) which is expected to host hundreds of families. Alumni are always welcome. Pictured from top left: Scott Noth ’07, Christopher Terriquez ’06, Clifton Gordon ’07, Marissa Iacopelli ’05, Kristin Richardson ’05 and Ashley Hluska ’05.

“I’m proud to be part of the group that helped put Marian Catholic softball on the map in the middle 1980’s and also proud to see the team’s resurgence with three straight 30-win seasons,” said McAllister, who will welcome overwhelming crowds for the tourney’s 10th anniversary in 2005. 5

H A L L O F FA M E C L A S S E P I TO M I Z E S S P I R I T He’s represented the community for estate planning as a lawyer. He’s represented Marian Matters readers as Chairperson of the Marian Catholic Alumni Association. What better person to represent the entire United States?

C HRISTOPHER C UMMINGS ’76 has done that as well, making him a perfect selection as Alumnus of the Year. Co-owner of Cummings & Duda, Ltd. law firm in Homewood, as well as a devout family man, Cummings made great sacrifice by serving his country when he traveled to northern Kuwait as a military engineer in 2003.

While his job and some of his Marian roles force Cummings to approach things from a serious nature, it’s much of the “fun” during high school that prepared him so well for the future. “I shared experiences with so many wonderful people,” recalled the graduate of Butler and DePaul University College of Law. “As part of the band, we traveled to Mexico City to perform. For our senior class trip, we went to California and drove down Highway 1 from San Francisco to San Diego. These are just some of the high points, sandwiched between lots of English, literature, algebra, French, chemistry and religion. I never had ‘nothing to do.’” Whether interested in academics, fine arts or athletics, look no further than Spirit of Marian honorees J OSEPH AND S USAN

(H AMILTON ) B EAUDRY ’67 ’67 as walking encyclopedias for Marian Catholic past, present and future. As alumni, alumni parents and friends to Marian, the Beaudrys are strangers to virtually no activity that occurs within the Spartan walls. His work with the Army 416th Engineer Command played a critical role in America's mission. Cummings has also played a prominent role in developing and carrying out the Mission of Marian Catholic High School. “Chris’ dedication to our Alumni Association and the Advisory Board in the past seven years sets the standard for being the ultimate Marian Catholic Alum,” current Alumni Association Chair Colleen (O’Neill) Ranieri ’83 said. “I’m proud to have had the chance to work with Chris through the Alumni Association.” No stranger to committees and the Advisory Board at Marian, Cummings considers his alma mater a natural match to much of what he does in daily life. “The Marian community has become a part of my personal and professional family,” said Cummings, one of three brothers (Andrew ’81, Peter ’86) to attend Marian. “Many of my current neighbors, friends and clients are Marian graduates. We all share a common bond. “At a higher level, my Marian experience has had a more subtle, but pervasive effect. Selfless service to others is a large part of Marian’s message. I try to approach every situation from this perspective. While it might not make you rich financially, it provides more lasting rewards.”

“We miss the many friends who are scattered around the country,” according to the Beaudrys, who have sent Jeanette ’94, Jeff ’97 and Carrie ’03 through Marian as well. “However, we are fortunate to be back at Marian for many events and sometimes feel as if we never left.” Most friends of Marian feel the same way about this couple.

The leadership of the Beaudrys has been profound, whether cheering at an event, as members of the Advisory Board, or most recognizable as Co-Chairs of the Marian Phonathon where they continue to devote themselves to the Dominican mission and future of the school. Sue had six other siblings travel through Marian including Bill ’62 (deceased), Dick ’63, Mike ’71, Jim ’72, Tom ’74 and Eileen ’80. Sue continued her education at Prairie State and DePaul. Joe graduated from St. Mary’s College in Winona, MN, but the two were reunited in marriage in 1971. The advice from two of Marian Catholic’s finest? “Try new things when the opportunity presents itself,” the Beaudrys said. “You will never know where it will take you unless you take that first step! Be true to your feelings, your instincts will usually guide you in the right direction. “Make a commitment to excellence to everything in which you get involved. It is very important to have passion in all of your endeavors.” They didn’t just say it—they live it. Hall of Fame discussion is nothing new to

Fine Arts Distinguished Achievement honoree PAUL PABST ’87. In the work that he often considers play, Pabst deals with Hall of Fame personalities on a weekly basis in his career with ESPN Radio and as a writer for ESPN the Magazine. Whether it’s the Super Bowl, World Series or the regular show with two of the most recognizable names in sports broadcast media— Dan Patrick and Rob Dibble— Pabst has plenty of clashes with greatness. Although behind the scenes, the shows and casts would never click without Pabst’s influence as producer. The passion that Pabst has for sports and his profession has existed for a long time, including dating back to his days at Marian Catholic.

“Salt and pepper, cream and sugar, Joe and Sue: whether on the Board, co-chairing the Phonathon, cheering on our athletes, hosting Snowball teams, the Beaudry’s do it together,” praised Marian Catholic President (and classmate of the Beaudrys) Sr. M. Paul McCaughey, O.P. “The family spirit runs deep in the Beaudry and Hamilton clans...and the Marian Catholic community has been blessed by it.” 8

“Senior year at Marian I took an elective journalism class and started working on the school paper,” said Pabst, who produces the Dan Patrick Show aired daily in the Chicago area on ESPN Radio AM-1000 from 12 to 3 p.m. “That's when I knew what I wanted to do. I still have a few pieces that I wrote for the paper; they are funny to look at from time-to-time. “One big thing Marian did was to instill expectations in you. When you went to school there, you were expected to go to college, expected to make something of yourself. When I think back to my days there, it was a positive place that really put you in

position to do great things in your future. The one person I remember most is Sr. Judith Anne. To me, her positive, friendly nature was what my time at Marian was all about.” Last February, Pabst hooked up with another Marian graduate, as Rodney Harrison ’91 helped lead the New England Patriots to a Super Bowl XXXVIII win over the Carolina

process for the football program. He had a tremendous rapport with the student-athletes in his classroom as well as a charismatic leadership on the field. “He was capable of demanding the ‘most’ from the student-athletes that he encountered, and was able to do it in a respectful manner. It is a fitting tribute that Bob Voss is now a member of the Marian Catholic High School Alumni Association Hall of Fame as the honored athlete for 2005. Congratulations!” As football coach at Marian Catholic, Voss started a string of five consecutive winning seasons from 1971 to 1975— a streak that eventually extended to 27 straight campaigns with a record of .500 or better. His 31-13-3 career record was highlighted by an 8-1-1 season in 1973, one that included victories over rivals Bloom and Homewood-Flossmoor.

Panthers. Pabst, along with Patrick and Dibble, were right there to capture the action. “I hope I never become jaded,” says Pabst, “where meeting some of the greatest athletes in the world becomes old-hat. I doubt that will ever happen. The show is a challenge, mostly because every media outlet is in town competing for the top names and biggest stories. However, that's what gets me fired up, trying to have a better show than the competition.” Pabst, a graduate of Southern Illinois University, has also worked for Pro Football Weekly, CBS Sports and CBS News. Now, he’s doing what he wants to do- something he considers a very important message. “Try as many things as you can when you’re in college and right after college,” Pabst said. “Most importantly, whatever you choose as your profession, you have to be passionate about it. I don’t care if you are a plumber or a CEO of a company, find a job that you are pumped up to do every day.” Since the early 1970’s the Marian Catholic football program and athletic department as a whole have been recognized as one of the finest in the state. The foundation for that reputation and the blueprint for continued success was established by Athlete of the Year ROBERT V OSS . “Bob Voss was instrumental in initializing the Marian Catholic High School football program in the early 1970’s,” praised current 29-year football coach and Athletic Director Dave Mattio ’66. “He brought a fresh energy and enthusiasm and began the direction
