Readers join forces at club By Katherine Kokkonen

YOUNGSTERS who share a love of the written word now have their very own club. The first meeting of The Mareeba Junior Readers and Writers club saw five like-minded kids come together, on Friday. Surrounded by some of their favourite books at the Mareeba Library, the kids discussed their plans for the club. Members will meet every Friday afternoon to talk about their favourite authors, bring in stories they have written and

work on craft projects inspired by books. Club leader Judah Thomas enjoys writing daily and is an avid reader. Judah, 13, said books are great for providing an escape from everyday life. “I just love to read and I think it’s fun,” she said. “You can live as somebody else and see the world through somebody else’s eyes.” New members are always welcome and receive a Golden Ticket bookmark on joining. tition, winning both first and second place. Friendly rivalry saw the top teams battle it out with only one point separating them at the end. Year 9 student Tristan Burford-Baynes knew what he was in for at the Reader’s Cup, having competed in previous years. He said he enjoyed the atmosphere at the Reader’s Cup and liked how it was fun but also competitive. Nevertheless, when it came to competition day, Tristan admitted it was still daunting going up against the other students. “All the posh schools are there and you know it is going to be hard because they’ve been training and training,” he said. “They were there with their teacher’s drilling them and we just didn’t know what to do, really.” The team will be hard at work, ahead of the state finals with another five books to read and analyse before The Mareeba State High School Reader’s Cup team, Jessica Heggie, Maddison Ryan, Bradley Newlands and the quiz. Council scrubs out graffiti By Katherine Kokkonen

Mareeba Shire Council Youth Support Officer Michael Haendel with the GraffitiSTOP trailer.

UNSIGHTLY graffiti will hopefully be a thing of past as Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) works to keep the town beautiful. The State Government has given the MSC $7,830 towards the council’s graffiti removal and prevention activities. Mayor Tom Gilmore said graffiti was a sporadic issue for council and that he wanted to help create an environment where people felt proud to live in Mareeba “From time to time young people get overly enthusiastic with the idea that they might leave a mark on society by painting it,” he said. “I think that that is really sad and what we try to do is that every time we find a bit of graffiti we eliminate it immediately.” MSC and Youth Justice have partnered to run the GraffitiSTOP program, which sees offenders clean up their own graffiti. The program aims to show young offenders the repercussions of committing vandalism. So far, eight kids have taken part in the program with the majority not going on to reoffend. “This gives them a consequence to their ac-

tion—they then clean-up what damage they’ve paint or with anything else that gives us, or done to the community,” Mayor Gilmore said. visitors, a bad feeling,” he said. As well as removing existing graffiti, MayMSC also hopes to establish an Art House or Gilmore said council was looking at inno- to provide kids with an artistic outlet. vative ways to discourage graffiti from occurring in the first place. He highlighted the toilet block at Arnold Park as an example of a building that has not been the target of vandals because of the way it has been painted. “It has been painted in an indigenous motif, organised through our council, and so the young people had an opportunity to express themTHIS WEEK’S SPECIALS... selves,” he said. > Lamb Loin Chops....................................$17.99 KG “It becomes theirs and they have > Lamb Legs ................................................$9.99 KG ownership. Fight for medical use of Cannabis FROM P1 is a matter for politicians, the possible use and administration of the drug has caused concern among doctors. Australian Medical Association Vice President Dr Stephen Parnis said more information was needed before doctors would be happy to use and prescribe the drug. Dr Parnis urged for more trials exploring both the potential benefits and harm of using cannabis for treatment. “I’m not ruling anything in or out, but there has to be appropriate levels of safety and as little harm as possible,” he said. “The bottom line is more work needs to be done before we can go one way or another. Good evidence

will lead to good decisions and avoid unintended consequences.” While the emphasis has been on the use of cannabis oil, Dr Parnis said doctors would require more information about the way cannabis would be administered and what doses should be given. He pointed to research on the use and administration of drugs such as aspirin and morphine and that the information provided doctors with guidelines on when and how to safely administer the drugs. Growing community support and increasing international acceptance of cannabis for medical use might well play into Mr Entsch’s hands when he introduces the bill in federal parliament. He said he had been

upfront about his views on the issue and felt now was time to do something positive. “I’m hoping it will be supported; I’m not trying to ambush anybody and have been very public,” he said. “I hope commonsense will prevail.”

Festival showcases Mareeba’s melting pot By Katherine Kokkonen MAREEBA Multicultural Festival went off with a bang with everything from spicy food to graceful dancers and rhythmic music at Arnold Park. Fine weather descended on the festival, which celebrated its 16th year on Saturday. Festival Committee Chairman Giuliano Cordenos couldn’t have been happier with how the day went. “It’s magnificent—the weather is good, the people are good

and they enjoy everything,” he said. Mayor Tom Gilmore said the festival was a great feel good exercise for Mareeba and showcased the town’s cultural harmony. “We are a potpourri of culture that has been growing now since white settlement because of the nature of the place,” he said. “They have all become part of who we are. The people here feel good about themselves and feel good about the community.”

ABOUT GEORGIA ROSE RUNNERS CAIRNS, AUSTRALIA

Ê

Georgia Rose Runners commenced in 2010. Not working and needing an income I put my sewing skills to full use by creating a home décor range to sell at markets. Filling a niche by creating a very individual product the décor range proved very successful with creations being admired by everyone. The name George is a family name spanning three generations and with the resurgence in the name Rose I changed George to Georgia added Rose and the two went together perfectly. Georgia Rose Runners was born. From 2010 to present the range has expanded, offering a wider variety of superior quality handmade items for sale. A large selection of runners are fully reversible allowing you to create a variety of themes/moods in your home. I also design and make boot stays, traditional hessian peg bags, aprons, bed runners (some with matching cushions, coverlets, individual cushions, coordinating reversible placemats PEG BAGS with runners, tablecloths and a range for children’s bedrooms), wall hangings, bunting, cot quilts and burlap garlands. Soon to be released will be the new Christmas line. Designed and created from superior quality fabrics, with the majority of the fabrics used having been designed and manufactured in Australia. I also source fabrics from the UK and the Americas offering clients a very different style of fabric. Bespoke designed in coordinating colors, I create very unique decor for your home at very affordable prices. Sizing also varies for runners, from square to over 2 metres in length suitable for 10 and 12 seater dining tables. Prints and colors vary, from contemporary, modern, cowboy, country, seaside, to bright and cheerful. Designs and colors are great for alfresco dining. All products are finished to a high standard. Machine sewn internally and reinforced with over-locking to avoid fraying. This also creates a smooth and seamless finish externally.

Youth Speaks: Arosh Heenkenda won the John Baxter trophy and Kate Schincariol from St Anthony’s in Dimbulah received a highly commended By Katherine Kokkonen MOST people would turn into a bundle of nerves at the thought of getting in front of a crowd to speak, but a group of young orators from the local area have shown they can talk the talk. The Mareeba Rotary Youth Speaks competition saw 11 students take to the lectern to present on a range of topics, including fishing, music and bullying. The competition is in its 17th year and saw a crowd converge at the Mareeba International Club, on August 29. Judges Connie Duncan and Gordon Malcolm were faced with the tough task of picking a winner. St Thomas Year 6 student Arosh Heenkenda came away with the trophy for his captivating speech on Mother Teresa. He said that while he did get a case of the

nerves he liked having the opportunity to express his feelings. “It was scary looking at all the people there,” he said. Fellow St Thomas student Kyrah Johnston, 12, presented a speech on the importance of environmental sustainability. She had a good tip for those wanting to be better public speakers. “Speak with passion,” she said. “Don’t just say it because you know it—say it because you mean it.” St Thomas Principal Rita Petersen was impressed by all of the students and picked up pointers from the speakers. “For 12-year-old students to get in front of 80 people and present how they did—look, I’m in awe,” she said. “I get nervous when I have to stand up in front of a crowd, so I think they did exceptionally well.”

Meals on Wheels tees off fundraiser Legacy lives on By Katherine Kokkonen

Meals on Wheels treasurer John Lambourne and Vice President Trish Goldfinch with Bendigo Bank assistant secretary Diana Pregl look forward to teeing off at the Golf Day.

THE time has come to break out the golf clubs for a worthy cause. Meals on Wheels has teamed up with Bendigo Bank to host a four ball Ambrose, later this month, to raise funds for a new vehicle. Meals on Wheels services more than 35 people, ranging from the elderly to those with disabilities, in Mareeba. The service provides healthy meals for only $8 and makes up to 150 meals every week. “Some of the vulnerable in the community don’t have family to cook for them or they can’t cook for themselves or they don’t have access to the supermarket and this really fills that

gap,” Meals on Wheels Vice President Trish Goldfinch said. Treasurer John Lambourne said a new vehicle would help Meals on Wheels operate more efficiently. To register for the Meals on Wheels Mareeba Golf Day head to your local Bendigo Bank branch or contact Diana Pregl on 0414 429 420. Entry is $100 per team and the day tees of at 9am on Friday, September 19 with the competition to be followed by a BBQ lunch. Meals on Wheels will have an AGM, later in this month, and are keen for new committee members to join. “It’s important to give back to the community and share your skills,” Ms Goldfinch said.

Legacy President Jimmy Ingram and 106 Squadron Australian Air Force Cadets are out in force for Legacy Week. By Katherine Kokkonen VOLUNTEERS and Air Force Cadets are taking to the streets and shopping centres to raise money during Legacy Week. Legacy Week, which started on Sunday, is the annual national appeal to raise awareness and funds for the families of incapacitated and deceased Veterans. Mareeba Legacy President Jimmy Ingram said Legacy provided an essential service and social support for veteran’s families. He said due to ongoing global conflicts, Legacy remained as vital as ever. “There are lots of widow, and young widows now,” Mr Ingram said. “Legacy is a must to maintain the status quo for the widows and the children. I know it doesn’t compensate and it doesn’t replace a father or a husband, but it provides a lot of support.” The funds raised will help Legacy continue to assist approximately 100,000 widows and 1,800 children.

Strengthening link By Katherine Kokkonen MAREEBA State High School students received unexpected kudos after attending the FNQ Engineering Link Project at James Cook University. Engineers were so impressed by the students’ intellectual abilities, creativeness and positive attitude that The Engineering Link Group director Paul Richards wrote a letter to the school. He described the students as best they had ever had in the project, no mean feat considering the project has been running across Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria since 1994.

MPM owner Selena Carabot.

A SENSE of betrayal and disappointment haunts a small business owner, after a former employee stole tens of thousands of dollars from her business. MPM owner Selena Carabot wanted to remind business owners to be vigilant after an employee, who had worked for her for almost three years, betrayed her trust. Ex-employee Pamela Lyn Groundwater pleaded guilty to eight

charges at the Mareeba Magistrates Court, on July 17. She was sentenced to 30 months imprisonment, to be released after serving three months, and was ordered to pay more than $37,000 in compensation. Ms Groundwater was the senior property manager and licensed accounts department manager. Despite the business’s accounts being regularly audited through a reputable accountancy firm, Ms Groundwater’s deception

remained undetected until another employee returned to work and discovered discrepancies in the accounts. Once the discrepancies had been detected, Ms Groundwater’s illegal acts intensified. Police investigated her for ten months and found she had been stealing money from the trust account. “It is a timely reminder for small business owners to be more vigilant, Ms Carabot said. Over Ms Groundwater’s time at

MPM she had developed a solid and trusting relationship with Ms Carabot, to the point where Ms Carabot paid for the funeral of Ms Groundwater’s father. After hearing rumours that Ms Groundwater felt compelled to steal because she was not being paid correctly, Ms Carabot wanted to set the record straight. “I was so disappointed because I really had gone that extra step to really look after her, Ms Carabot said.

Council cross at state passing on rail cost FROM P1 “I just think this is a cost-shifting exercise, he said. “We have had this in the past, with the EPA, and I think this is another one that is a headache for the state and they are just throwing it in our court. I think it is about time we stood up and said ‘we don’t want it’. Mayor Tom Gilmore expected that negotiations between MSC and QR would hinge on the term “reasonable. He pointed to the obligations of Road Managers and that it outlined one of their responsibilities as “determine measures to manage those risks, so far as is reasonably practicable. However, Mayor Gilmore said he was aware that it was possible that QR might have more stringent views on rail safety than those held by MSC. “I don’t like to continue crying poor, but this council is brand new and we’ve just delivered the toughest budget, he said. “All of a sudden the state says, ‘you must do this, too’ and it’s another $130,000 and that equates to a one per cent increase of rates. While MSC will enter into negotiations, Mayor Gilmore was not hopeful that an agreement would be reached and said this situation was an example of the state taking a one-size-fits all approach to local councils. A Transport and Main Roads spokesperson said level crossing interface agreements provided an opportunity to collaboratively plan the best use of available resources to maintain level crossing safety and that the implementation of the agreements should not add “any significant

Mareeba PCYC Branch Manager Mary-Anne West said they had received glowing comments on how amazing the flowers were. “The florist who judged it said the quality was beautiful and there were perfect specimens there, she said. Ms West put the lower number of entries this year down to the weather and said gardeners had told her flowers, especially roses, had not come out yet due to the cold. The Flower Show raised funds for the PCYC main kitchen renovation, which is in a heritage-listed building. MAREEBA SAWMILLS

Did you know that Mareeba has had 3 sawmills? The first was The Chillagoe Mines Co. Ltd Sawmills, built in approx 1904, and managed by Walter Jamieson. It’s probable that this sawmill only supplied timber for the Mining Company’s own purposes.

In 1905, Walter Jamieson built his own sawmill on the western side of the Keeble Street railway crossing. The sawdust from the mill was dumped in Basalt Gully where the local youngsters had fun sliding down the sawdust hills. A young man by the name of Alec Lawson was in charge of construction of Jamieson’s Mill. When construction was complete in 1907, Alec told his boss he wanted to build his own mill. Mr Jamieson was satisfied there was enough business for another mill and actually assisted Alec to build his sawmill. Alec’s sons eventually took over the running of the mill, until the mill was sold to Foxwood Pty Ltd in 1968. The Jamieson mill ran until closure in 1938.

First aid for the mind By Katherine Kokkonen

GET in quick for the final chance of the year in a mental health first aid course. Following on from the success of previous mental health first aid courses, another two-day course will be run in early November. Disability Support Worker Venera La Spina attended the course in August out of professional and personal interest. She found the course extremely informative and encouraged others to participate. Ms La Spina said the course catered for people of different backgrounds, interests and professions. “If anything it shows that it is applicable to everyone in society, we have courses that teach us how to stop bleeding, but we also need to be able to understand when people are struggling with life and

anxiety,” she said. “Society’s thing is that people with mental illness shouldn’t be out in the public, but really we should understand them and support them. This is about the reapproach and trying to get that connection back—understanding them and helping them to get the tools for help.” Ms La Spina said she used the information the course gave her in everyday life and would even sign-up for the course again to refresh her skills. “I walked away from the course with better tools and understanding,” she said. “You can never have enough knowledge or understanding of other people and that’s what makes us good people.” For more information or to register for the course, contact Mary Stefanutti on 4092 9311.

Among the practical tips given to participants was the use of the acronym ALGEE, which can be used if you think somebody you know is struggling.

A – approach, assess and assist with any crises L – listen non-judgementally G – give support and information E – encourage appropriate professional help E – encourage other support

Hundreds flock to show

By NICK WATLING of Atherton Rotary

Lilly-pillies galore...

Peter & Ann

The Mareeba Theatre Group played to packed audiences for their midyear show A Night of Comedy. More than 250 people packed the theatre groups hall looking for a barrel of laughs and that’s exactly what they got. Numerous comedy skits, including favourites like ‘My Big Deck”, had the audiences rolling in the aisles. The night also featured the return of the famous Nick and Shaz from last year’s wedding. “Comedy is not a science, its art”. According to Director Ida Portella, “Comedy has no rules it can be very subjective, what one

person finds funny the other may cringe at”. “It was the first time we used our new hall and I think that the audience had a great time”. “It was a collection of sketches that we collected, some written by popular comedians, playwrights and others and from our cast members including Michael Bryce who wrote and directed “Tech Support” she said. “I appreciate the time and effort the cast put in and all the back stage crew, without them there would be no show”. The Mareeba Theatre Groups next production will be in December where they will have a six night program for theatre lovers.

Happy gardening, and see you at Yuruga!

Everyone loves Lilly-pillies! Why? Because they are dense and bushy, they have lovely tropical foliage, they’re beautiful in flower, attract native birds and, well, they just look simply fabulous in the garden. They are a quintessential Aussie plant, but you don’t have to be a died-in-the-wool native enthusiast to appreciate a lilly-pilly – in fact they look just as at home in a native garden, a rose garden, a cottage garden or a good-old anything goes garden. So there’s no excuse for not having a lilly-pilly in your garden! There’s so many varieties, that there is a lilly-pilly for every situation from the cool misty heights of Millaa Millaa to the bright sunny flats of Mareeba and everywhere between and beyond. The botanical name for lilly-pillies is ‘Syzygium’ which everyone agrees is the ultimate tongue twister, so the common names Satinash, Lilly-pilly, Cherry and Apple are much easier to use. There’s lilly-pillies for small spaces and shady spots, such as the Powder-puff Lilly-pilly with its glorious fluffy maroon flowers (in flower at the Yuruga Garden Café right now). There’s lilly-pillies for screens and windbreaks, such as the Creek Cherry, River Cherry and Blush Satinash. There’s lilly-pillies you can clip and hedge and turn into elephants and other topiary, such as Smith’s Lilly-pilly. There’s fabulous bush-tucker lilly-pillies such as the Water Cherry, Lady Apple and Fibrous Satinash. There’s lilly-pillies with beautiful, delicate, exquisite foliage such as the Tinkling Satinash, Mulgrave Satinash, Rocky River Lilly-pilly and Rex Satinash. There’s lilly-pillies with stunning new growth such as the Johnstone River Apple, Yellow Satinash and Plum Satinash. There’s lilly-pillies that make brilliant street trees, such as the White Apple, Claudie Satinash and Bumpy Satinash. There’s lilly-pillies that are fabulous for shade on a large block, such as the Bamaga Satinash and River Cherry. And there’s lilly-pillies with the most glorious ornamental fruit, such as the Paperbark Satinash, Plum Satinash, Water Cherry and Lockerbie Satinash. So I think you get the idea... there’s a lilly-pilly for every situation! Yuruga grows about 40 different varieties of lilly-pillies suitable for gardens in North Queensland. Pick our brains to choose the best ones for your garden. And take advantage of our September special... there’s 20% discount on all lilly-pillies at Yuruga this month!

LUCY

A woman accidentally caught in a dark deal turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic.

Cancer Council Queensland Relay For Life Coordinator Courtney Sullivan introduces the new Relay experience - the simple, social and mobile way!

Relayer’s – it’s time to pick up your smartphones and get interactive!

...

There is an excellent new movie at The Rising Sun Cinema this week – LUCY, starring Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman. A sci-fi film that is very different and very entertaining, and what's more, it's been a huge box office success. Read the review and you'll see what we mean . Continuing for a second great week are the delightful HUNDRED FOOT JOURNEY, with Helen Mirren and THE EXPENDABLES 3, the all action flic with a host of top stars, providing a feast of adrenalin pumping entertainment.

To help make Relay For Life even more interactive, we have also launched a new national website (www.relayforlife.org.au), designed to make participating in Relay simple, social and mobile. The new site assists teams with fundraising efforts, enabling viewers to set and track goals, personalise their profiles and lastly, tap into their social networks to raise funds for Cancer Council Queensland. The new website is a great platform for fundraising, and will help us spread a message of hope throughout our community. With your help we can paint Facebook, Instagram and Twitter the official colour of purple and show our support and love to those who have been impacted by cancer in some way.

Review by Louise Keller: It might be too bizarre for some, but Luc Besson's high concept exploration of the meaning of life as it deals with the human brain and its capacity, is wildly fascinating and blatantly sensational. Impossible to categorize, it's a crime thriller cum sci-fi roller coaster, in which time is life's unit of measure. Pushing boundaries while exploring unfathomable notions of what might happen if we could utilise all instead of 10% of the brain's capacity, the result is an audacious film that stimulates and tantalises both visually and intellectually. Besson's film is quite a trip: a potent mix of action and scientific mind-games with Scarlett Johansson's beautiful features in focus throughout (she plays an innocent who becomes an unwilling participant in a heavy duty drug smuggling operation). After a brief prelude depicting imagery of single and reproducing cells, we are thrown headlong into the dark story, when Lucy (Johansson) is forced to deliver a briefcase with unknown contents to a stranger in Taiwan. The juxtaposition of images of predatory animals

With its drug mule themes and central plot line involving powerful synthetic crystals that increase the brain's capacity, the narrative explodes on screen with Lucy both prey and predator. Johansson is fabulous and totally credible as the shapely young woman who evolves into a warrior with heightened senses, strength, no pain, fear or desire and an increasing ability to control herself, others and external forces. Watch out for the thrilling Paris car chase that begins in Place Vendome, continuing along the Seine with Lucy at the wheel. The shoot outs and innovative way that Lucy handles her foes as she makes them unable to move or fall asleep at will, is highly entertaining. By the time Lucy and Professor Norman connect, we are ready for anything and the visuals, including iridescent streamers floating from the sky and squirming, gigantic black worms representing energy force, are effective. Needless to say, the special effects are mind-blowing. Also effective is the use of music to accentuate the drama and incongruity throughout. A considerable leap of faith is required to tag along with Besson's imaginative train of thought, but the rewards are tangible. If it's intellectual stimulation you are after, chances are you will find it here. Besides, there's plenty to talk about.

THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY

Following the violent attack that burnt down their restaurant, an Indian family moves to rural France and opens an eatery across the road from a Michelin-starred French restaurant run by Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren).

THE EXPENDIBLES 3

A assignment to stop a powerful weapon from falling into the wrong hands ends in a shocking turn of events for Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) and his crack team of mercenaries, known as The Expendables. They discover that the ruthless arms dealer they are pursuing is none other than Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson), Barney's former partner and Expendables' co-founder, and a man he thought he had killed more than a decade earlier. Classic old-school tactics meet high-tech expertise as the combined teams battle to survive an epic onslaught by Stonebanks' militia.

is a Moderately reactive clay or silt site, which can experience moderate ground movement from moisture changes. Anything below M Class is either a “ H”, “E “or “ P” class. A “P” class site includes soft soils, such as soft clay, or loose sands, soils subject to erosion or abnormal moisture conditions. A “P” Classification may mean many extra Dollars to help prevent movement. How do you find out what your soil classification is? Contact our local soil testing professionals. Here at Amaroo, we guarantee an “M” class or better, and we encourage our Buyers to have a soil test done to determine the classification of the soil before they purchase. This way if there are any problems there is time to find out extra costs, and make an informed decision about the purchase. We have a terrific track rate, and always stand by our guarantee.

It is important for the prospective purchaser of a block of land to ensure that they know the type of soil classification on the block of land they are buying, before they buy it-so that they are aware of any problems in the foundation soil – which could save heaps of time and money. Buildings can and often do move, this can usually be related to one or more problems in the foundation soil, and can result in cracking in brickwork and walls. The types of soil in residential land can be put into two approximate categories, Granular and Clay. Granular soils generally can contribute to erosion problems, whereas clay soils are prone to saturation, and swell/shrink problems. Should the Lot you are buying have an inferior classification, it is quite possible that you may be up for a lot more money before you even begin, with stronger steel and wider footings required to strengthen the slab. Seed Savers Leader Lindy Alba presents Teacher Aide Librarian Leevi Elmes with resources for Mareeba State School.

Garden passion flowers at schools By Katherine Kokkonen

A LOVE of gardening and fresh produce is taking root at schools across the region thanks to a Mareeba community group. Mareeba Seed Savers and Gardeners donated books and DVDs about seed and food production to Mareeba State School, St Thomas, Dimbulah State School, Tolga State Primary School and Biboohra State Primary School. The resources were created by Seed Savers founders Michel and Jude Fanton and celebrate farmers and gardeners who preserve and share nutrient-dense food heritage. Seed Savers is a group that shares and exchanges non-hybrid local seeds, plant materials and knowledge. Seed Savers leader Lindy Alba practices the group’s philosophy and

has been growing and sharing an open Italian lettuce variety, which was passed down to her from her grandmother, Francesca Leotta. “The idea behind this is to inspire students and teachers to grow, harvest and eat fresh food in the school,” she said. “It shows children the process of growing food to eat and how delicious it is to eat straight out of the garden.” Mareeba State School Teacher Librarian Liz Crunkhorn said it was a great opportunity for the kids and believed the students would be keen to learn more. Seed Savers’ next meeting is on November 2 at 19 Kenneally Road, Mareeba. For more information, call Lindy Alba on 4092 1116 or go to seedsavers.net

July 23 to Aug 22

A quiet restful day just staying in bed or catching up on reading will be your best bet. You will be able to dazzle others with your obvious charm and your outgoing nature.

There might be one who is quite willing to take the credit for your work. Remember; talk to them, not at them. Home improvement projects will run smoothly.

You have more than enough on your plate already. Be careful what you consume this week. Don’t let children hold you back from doing things you enjoy. Attend to things that you should have done yesterday.

Scorpio

Oct 24 to Nov 22

Your high energy will help you through this rather hectic day. You may have a hidden adversary who would love to prove you wrong. You’ll be tempted to spend extravagantly this week. Your intellectual charm will entice new love interests.

Sagittarius

Nov 23 to Dec 21

Travel will result in new romantic attractions. Moves or the possibility of having someone different living with you may be difficult at first. You’ll find it easy to deal with government agencies or large institutions.

By Katherine Kokkonen A rising soccer star was taken by surprise when he won the Mareeba Bulls Junior Player of the year trophy. Marco Soncin was humbled to receive the recognition at his club’s presentation night, on Saturday. The central midfield or right wing player has been on the soccer pitch for nine years. While he played in the under 14 team, Marco dreamed of one day playing soccer professionally.

Coach Andre Soncin said Marco deserved to win for his outstanding work ethic, understanding of the game and technical ability. “He’s always giving his best,” Soncin said. Junior Mareeba Bulls President Michael Haendel was proud of Marco’s achievement and the overall development of talent at the club. “It’s good to have these awards so that they can strive to be the senior bulls players of the future,” he said.

sPORT results & draws MAREEBA BASKETBALL INC. Exciting draws in Senior and Junior fixtures together with a new serious challenger for the Senior Ladies championship title were a highlight of Mareeba Basketball competition decided last week. The clash between Stingrays and Topshot Thunder Senior Mens sides saw both teams locked together at 20 all when the half time hooter sounded. While Shana Aue and Matapo Matapo played strongly for Topshot Thunder. Majestic Gallopers were convincing 37 points winners over Comet Young Guns in the other Mens fixture. The Young High School Divas combinations are strong contenders for championship honours after a good 30 to 22 victory over Baiada Steggles. Bulls stampede into final The Mareeba Bulls overcame some inner demons and the set the record straight with a hard and typically tense semi-final win against the Stratford Dolphins. The Bulls 2-1 win over the dolphins will see them move directly into the decider in two weeks time. The Bulls tweaked their lineup, shifting right back Kane Alderton to the left and brought in youngster Marc Torrisi in an effort to match the Dolphins physical and direct style. The move paid dividends for the home side with Stratford’s danger man Mic Van Hooran made a spectator for most of the match. The Bulls overcame the opening barrage from the away side to settle and should have taken the lead early on, with returning striker Steven Cater missing an open goal and then a one-on-one chance with Dolphins custodian Angelo Serafin, who was the difference for the travelling side. But against the run of play, a sloppy corner and resulting passage from the Bulls allowed the Dolphins to catch them on the break. Away side big man Greg Darbyshire found a way past the Bulls defense and gave the Dolphins a 1-0

lead just before the break. The message at halftime from the Bulls coach Alex Srhoj was simple: go hard or go home. The Bulls lifted from the kick-off and totally outplayed the Dolphins. The introduction of Bulls ace Wayne Srhoj in the final 30 minutes gave the home side the push to go for it and Robert Pendenza drew level with 20 minutes to go. The Dolphins somehow held on, with Serafin outstanding in the goal, and some poor execution from the Bulls saw the game 1-1 at full time and moved into extra time. The first 15 minutes of the extra period flew by with the Bulls dominating possession but unable to find a breakthrough, but with the change of halves the luck changed for the Bulls with Elliot Gardner netting the winner with five minutes to go, sending the large Bulls crowd into raptures. “I am happy for the players, they had to really fight and they did,” Coach Srhoj said. “They had to battle hard and they did, the work rate was outstanding. Though we were down 1-0, I always felt like it was going to be our night.”

The Bulls will now move into the grand final and look to be heading back to full strength; striker Steven Cater enjoyed his first football in a month and looked good, Larry Maggio has made a miracle return and was on the bench ready to play and Wayne Srhoj was able to get some game time back. The team will have another rest to make sure they are ready for the final. “It is pleasing, Wayne is getting better, probably 30 minutes more then what we would have liked, Cater looked really good and Larry was ready to go, so hopefully I will have some headaches for the grand final,” Srhoj said. “Now though all our focus turns towards getting the men’s reserves and 2nd division into the grand final, which would be something special.” MUFC are encouraging businesses to paint the town orange and black before the grand final on Saturday, September 13 – show your support of your club and your town. The best dressed business will receive four free passes to the grand final which will be held in Cairns at Endeavour Park.

Little Gators win premiership By Katherine Kokkonen THEY may be small, but what they lack in size they more than make up with in determination. The Mareeba Gladiators Under 11s have beaten Innisfail Brothers 18–12 to take home the premiership. In a brilliant display of guts and teamwork, the Gladiators came out firing in Cairns to score three tries within the first 10 minutes and went to halftime with the scores at 18–6. Manager Darrin Hastie said the team had a lot of go and were indomitable. He praised their team spirit and was thrilled all of their hard work throughout the season had paid off. “The way they played the first half made it the best half of football this year, by any Mareeba team,” he said. “They made no mistakes and they played for each

other and coach Brett Crooks instilled in them that it is a team sport. They’ve worked hard all year and trained 110 per cent. They did this for themselves, the club and the town.” The Gladiator’s shellacking of Brothers owed a lot to Owen Christopher’s three tries. His performance earned him the Neil Bretz Memorial Trophy and Hastie’s praise. “He was a standout – he’s nearly the littlest fella on the team and he embodies the saying ‘small town, big heart’,” Hastie said. “He goes 100 miles per hour 100 per cent of the time and he is just a lovely kid.” Brothers tried to make a comeback in the second half, but while the Gladiators were exhausted they dug deep to hold a strong defence. Hastie wanted to thank the committee and the fantastic supporters who travelled with the team, giving them a sea of green and gold to cheer them on. He said that while it might have been almost 20 years since Mareeba had won a premiership in Cairns, he hope the win showed the boys what they are capable of. “We are the boys from the bush and we went to the city to steal their crown,” Hastie said. “I hope the boys have that taste of victory, that fantastic feeling and want to do it again.”

Mareeba swimmers now have room to move and better facilities to train in their revamped clubhouse.

Clubhouse makes a splash By Katherine Kokkonen SWIMMERS will be hard at training, both in and out of the pool, now that Mareeba Swim Club has a revamped clubhouse. The renovated facility provides a space for swimmers to focus on building up their fitness and core strength. The clubhouse has new rubber flooring and features more space for equipment, including a large TV that will be used for training DVDs and will allow for swimmers to analyse their techniques. “We can just do so much more now with the kids,” Mareeba Swim Club President Kevin Davies said. “Instead of being crowded they have their own room to spread out and we can still have space to get more equipment. The kids just absolutely love it and we hope this will improve their performance.” Last year, the club had more than ten swimmers qualify for state and Mr Davies hoped 15 swimmers would qualify this year. He said that without the $20,000 grant from Bendigo Bank, the club would have had to undertake about five years of fundraising for the revamp. “It would have been numerous hours of people volunteering to sell tickets,” he said.

Bendigo Board Chairman Gilbert Teitzel was delighted with the work the club had done with the grant and believed that it would benefit not only swimmers but also the wider community. The clubhouse has already been put to good use with 30 people completing the Royal Lifesaving Bronze medallion course at the facility. “It’s not just for the swimming club, but for all the other kids that want to come along and use the facilities,” he said. “This couldn’t be achieved without the support of the community who go to the Bendigo Bank to do their business.” As well as the grant, the club put in more than $15,000 towards the clubhouse and members pitched in to work on the renovations. Coach June Cotter was amazed by the support and dedication of club members. “All the swimmers came in and helped their parents,” she said. “The kids were in here shovels and brooms and dust flying everywhere but they were in and proud of their clubhouse. It was lovely and good team bonding.” Mareeba Swim Club would like to thank Shane Smith Builders, APL plumbing, Soncin Electrical, Maximum Pest Control and RTS concreting for their contributions towards the revamp.

EXPRESS sPORT Mareeba Turf Club secretary John Thurlow surveys the track.

Friends Serena Kruse, Helen Shaw and Carly Fitzpatrick pull into the first stop at Mareeba.

Spring into racing season By Katherine Kokkonen MAREEBA Turf Club preparations are on the homestretch in the lead-up to the first race meet of the Spring season. More than 1,200 punters are expected to frock up and place their bets at the Mareeba Annuals, this Saturday. Club secretary John Thurlow expected a classy party atmosphere and for all eyes to be on the horses and fashion ponies. Fierce and fine competitors will be in the fashions of the field with more than $3,000 prize money up for grabs. Any styling emergencies will be quickly solved with Gallery of Beauty on site to lend a hand. “The ladies express themselves with their gear and they really flock here,” Mr Thurlow said. “Mareeba ladies really love getting dressed up.” For the more serious punters, attention will be on the track from the PIM’s race through to the Samson’s Fruit & Veg Cup and Graham Hotel race. As well as the excitement of Spring

racing, Mareeba Turf Club anticipated a stellar year after Racing Queensland announced an increase of prize money. After October 1, prize money will go from $5,000 per race to $7,000, putting Mareeba on a par with other clubs across the region. However, Mareeba Turf Club has set their goals even higher and planned to continue adding more to the prize money from the club’s own stake money. The club will have at least one $10,000 race every race meet, starting from Boxing Day. Mr Thurlow said the increase in prize money will attract more trainers and owners to bring their horses to Mareeba to race. “We were always playing catch-up trying to keep up with the other clubs and now we will forge ahead of the other clubs in stake money,” he said. “I really see it as a big benefit to racing, as a whole, because more people will get involved. It will increase interest in racing and in people to own a horse because there will be a greater return.”

Riders are all heart By Katherine Kokkonen HUNDREDS of riders were all smiles when they rolled into their first pit stop of the Cardiac Challenge. Leaving Kuranda on Friday morning, more than 270 hungry and thirsty riders pulled up at the Mareeba Rotary Park for a well-earned break before continuing their 335 kilometre journey to Cooktown. Camp Commandant Terry Roos said the morning had run according to plan and hoped the participants were having a good time. He said the first day of riding was a nice introduction to the challenge before the riders hit hills on the second day. The challenge was all for a good cause with the money raised going towards the purchase of medical equipment for the Cairns Hospital Cardiac Unit. Equipment bought through the challenge fundraiser includes an ultrasound system for young heart patients and two intra-aortic balloon pumps. “The unique part of it is that there is no middle man and the money that is raised goes straight to the cause,” Mr Roos said.

Flying the flag for Gen Y, 12-year-old Natalie Kean-Sharp takes on the Cardiac Challenge.

Rotary exchange students Zoe Sournia, from France, and Stefanie Neuhaus, from Germany, tag along on the Cardiac Challenge.

Challenge set for golf day

Girls on top form Mareeba Netballers have shown they are in top form, winning the Port Douglas Junior Netball Carnival and taking out first place in Division 1. The 16 years team dominated at the carnival with players showing that Mareeba can mix it up with the best in the region. This team consisted of players who have been with the Association since its inception and well deserved the title of best team at the carnival. They proved

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

they were the ones to watch but were unstoppable, winning all their games to bring home the title. Mareeba continued its success with the 12 Years team also winning their division and the 14 years team finishing as Runners Up. With a total of five Mareeba teams competing in the Port Douglas Junior Carnival including an eleven year old team, Mareeba Netball was clearly the club to beat.

Alex Hofer and Loz Finlay take a well earned break.

The annual Mareeba Dunnrite golf day is on again this Saturday September 6. Defending champions Darren Hastie and Chris Lea have sent out a challenge to see if anyone can beat them this year. Almost 90 golfers are expected to run the Mareeba Golf course and are coming

from the Tablelands, Cairns and surrounds where they will play 18 holes, 2 ball Ambrose with a shotgun start at 8am. Lunch will be provided and drinks will be available, great prizes will also be on offer. Presentations will be at 1pm so those wanting to go to the Mareeba Annuals can do so.
