Hiking

The North Santiam River Country is a mecca for hikers. There are trails seemingly everywhere you look. Riverside meanderings; hill climbs that will test your stamina; amazing meetings of water and rock and old-growth trees, with moss everywhere; water gurgling on all sides. The wilderness area is more than just a place to mosey among the trees. It is a symbol of the fight that took place in the 1980s over Forest Service logging. It helped turn a small nocturnal bird into a bumper sticker and changed the way Oregon does business. Interestingly, the region’s first industry was hard-rock extraction, with the buildings of Jawbone Flats, the old mining town at the center of the wilderness, still standing, incongruously, amid a cathedral of old-growth trees. Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center maintains and stewards Jawbone Flats, a rejuvenated historic 1930 mining town in the heart of the 35,000-acre ancient forest watershed of the Opal Creek Wilderness and Scenic Recreation Area. The Opal Creek Forest was first inhabited by Native Americans. Miners arrived in the valley and discovered gold in 1859. The Jawbone Flats mining camp began in 1930.

Friends of Opal Creek was established in 1989 to secure permanent protection of the Opal Creek ecosystem. In 1992, mining ceased and the Shiny Rock Mining Co. gave Friends of Opal Creek a land gift valued at $12.6 million. Included were 151 acres of land: Jawbone Flats

and a stand of old-growth forest. In October 1996 federal legislation established the 20,827 acre Opal Creek Wilderness, the 13,538 acre Opal Creek Scenic Recreation Area and a 3,066 acre Wild and Scenic River designation for Elkhorn Creek. The Opal Creek forest receives approximately 20,000 visitors annually. The Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center features natural history workshops for adults, private cabin rentals, and day or night education programs for community groups and schools. Visit www.opalcreek.org or call 503-892-2782 for information. To get to Opal Creek take Highway 22 to the Little North Fork/Elkhorn exit. Proceed 15 miles on paved road and 1.3 on gravel, then take Road 2209 for six miles until it dead-ends at the trailhead ($5 day-use fee). Another route into the Opal Creek area is via the Little North Santiam trail, which you can pick up by turning onto Elkhorn Drive off of North Fork Road (and skip some of the dirt roads that go into Opal Creek). Other hiking destinations in the area include Shellburg Falls (turn off of Highway 22 on Fern Ridge north of Mehama), Marion Lake (take Marion Creek Road/Forest Road 2255 at Marion Forks), and Jefferson Park (take Forest Road 2243 to the Whitewater trailhead just past Idanha). Please note that fires in 2017 have closed the Whitewater trail until at least the summer of 2018.

Water Sports

The River Country is home to some of the best water recreation in Oregon, with the North Santiam River and Detroit Lake offering opportunities for kayaking, boating, fishing, and swimming. A 92-mile tributary of the Santiam River, the North Santiam originates in the Cascades near Mount Jefferson. During spring snowmelt it offers many Class III and Class IV rapids, including Spencer’s Hole, Carnivore and Mill City Falls. During the summer the North Santiam moves at a more relaxing pace with Class II rapids.

Elkhorn Golf Course An exceptionally scenic course, Elkhorn offers a challenging 18 holes of golf, even for the low handicapper. Elkhorn is an regulation length course, 71 par, 6242 yards. There are chipping and putting practice areas for golfers interested in working on their short game. The course is located at 32295 North Fork Road SE, Lyons. Mike Whitmore

Detroit Lake is a multi-purpose water project, created by the Army Corps of Engineers upon completion of the 463-foot Detroit Dam in 1953. Powered by two generator units, the dam provides flood control, irrigation, power generation, and a recreational lake. Detroit Lake is nine miles long, holds 455,100 acre-feet of water and has 33 miles of shoreline. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife stocks the waters annually with 125,000 rainbow trout along with fingerling rainbow trout, kokanee and Chinook salmon. There are also brown bullhead, largemouth bass and pumpkinseed in the reservoir. The main game of the North Santiam River, Steelhead and Chinook salmon, make their way to the area in May and remain until August. Substantial runs of these fish continue to be abundant in the North Santiam below Detroit. The downstream point of the fish runs is located at Packsaddle Park about 60 miles upstream from the Willamette. The North Santiam is a popular spot for kayaking and float trips, with access to the river provided at many of the communities and at parks from Lyons and Mehama to Big Cliff Dam.

Heritage & History

Heritage & History

Glaciers formed the North Santiam Canyon, carving out the area from Lyons-Mehama to Gates, as well as the hollow where Detroit Lake now exists. The canyon served for centuries as a highway for Native Americans, especially the Santiam band of the Kalapooya, Klamath, and Warm Springs tribes. In the late 1870s, white settlers arrived from the Willamette Valley.

Canyon Life Museum 129 Wall St., Mill City Memorial Day – Labor Day, Open Fridays and Saturdays or by appointment: 503-897-2816 Between 1888 and 1890, the Oregon Pacific Railroad penetrated the canyon and encouraged the growth of small towns along its

path. Originally designed to be a transcontinental railroad before succumbing to financial difficulties, the railroad became a means for the transportation of huge quantities of logs to feed the Willamette Valley’s timber industry, from Idanha to Corvallis. The canyon’s economy was dependent on logging, farming, lumber mills, and mining for most of

Lyons, Mehama & Gates Two Irish brothers, James and Henry Lyons, named the community south of the Santiam River after themselves in the 1880s. The city of Lyons was incorporated in 1958. Services include restaurants, stores, service stations, beauty salons, churches, a gift shop, the Mari-Linn School, Lyons City Hall, Lyons Post Office, a fire department, a ball field and a public library. The area offers many outdoor entertainment opportunities, including wooded trails for walkers, joggers, bikers and hikers; natural wetlands; fishing and boating access to the North Santiam River; Freres City Park and John Neal Campground. Mehama, an unincorporated community north of the Santiam

River, was named after Mehama Smith, the wife of James Smith, who laid out the town site in the 1870s. The town is most easily found by exiting Highway 22 at the flashing yellow light at Highway 226, near Gene’s Meat Market. This iconic local butcher shop serves locally raised meats and an unofficial welcome center to the region and communities that embrace smalltown style. The Mehama Fire Hall is the center of many community activities. Gates was founded as a settlement for miners and loggers who lived in the area during the winter months. A post office was established in February 1882. Ten years later W.R. Robertson, then postmaster, moved the post office

across the river to a place called Gatesville. The name of the post office was changed to Gates, which became the name of the city when it was incorporated in 1950. Gates is a peaceful little town located three miles east of Mill City along the North Santiam River. Several small pristine creeks and tributaries run through or near Gates, including Rock Creek, Little Rock Creek and Mad Creek.

Mill City

Mill City

In 1886 four entrepreneurs from Stayton gave Mill City its name when they purchased land next to a falls on the North Santiam River. The men had machinery hauled up on wagons from Stayton and constructed a mill. A small community formed around the mill in the following years and Mill City’s first post office was established in 1888. The city was incorporated in 1947. center, a library, a video store, a visitors’ center and retail stores. It is subdivided by the scenic North Santiam River; north of the river is Marion County and south of the river is Linn County. The two dams that control the river flows are well upstream from Mill City, which means great fishing and lots of river recreation.

Mill City is the largest community in the North Santiam River Country. Recreational opportunities include three parks that offer playgrounds, boating, fishing, water activities and picnicking. HISTORIC RAILROAD BRIDGE Sheldon Traver

Heritage & History

Detroit Detroit was founded during the construction of the Oregon Pacific Railroad. The name was selected because of the large population of people from Michigan, who had settled in the region in the 1870s. A post office was established in 1891, and Detroit began to prosper as a center for the logging industry in the 1920s. The city was incorporated in 1952, the same year that it was relocated to higher ground due to the construction of the Detroit Dam. Remnants of the original town occasionally make their ghostly appearance on exposed portions of the

lakebed – including a pioneer-era wagon relic trapped in the mud. The completion of the dam, and the filling of the lake it created, transformed the city from a logging community into a popular tourist attraction. Detroit today offers an appealing balance of small-town friendliness and recreational excitement. The lake is a popular location for boating, fishing, swimming, sailing and other water sports. Aside from water activities there are

opportunities for camping, picnicking, biking, hiking, hunting, and backpacking. In the winter, Detroit offers access to sledding and skiing. Detroit features motels, bed and breakfasts, rental cabins, campground facilities, RV parks, and retreat and conference facilities. Restaurants, grocery stores and marinas offer their services and goods as well. The city hosts events held throughout the year, including the July “Fireworks Over the Lake” celebration.

Breitenbush Hot Springs, Idanha & Marion Forks facilities in 1977 and converted the area into the modern Breitenbush Hot Springs Resort & Conference Center.

Breitenbush Hot Springs, about ten miles northeast of Detroit, were used by Native Americans for healing and ritual purification. President Theodore Roosevelt granted the land that includes the springs in a homestead patent in 1904. Merle Bruckman purchased the land in 1927 and converted it into a health spa, which he operated for more than 20 years. Alex Beamer bought the then-dilapidated

to Idanha in 1889 but construction didn’t continue eastward because of a lack of funding.

In addition to its renowned hot springs, the center offers healing arts and massage, daily well-being programs, performances, hiking trails, and workshops. Breitenbush hosts more than 150 events each year. Visit www.breitenbush.com or call 503-854-3320 for information.

The post office was established in 1895 and the city was incorporated in 1950. Idanha is the smallest town in the North Santiam River Country and the highest settlement along the river. Idanha has a store, café, post office, library and a city park. It is located about halfway between Salem and Sisters.

Idanha’s original name was Muskrat Camp. It later adopted the name Idanha, a name that was inspired by the Natural Mineral Water Company in Soda Springs, Idaho. The company bottled water called “Idan-Ha.” The Oregon Pacific Railroad system was completed along the North Santiam River up

Marion Forks is an unincorporated community on the North Santiam Highway, 15 miles south of Detroit. named for the nearby river fork where Marion Creek meets the North Santiam River. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife Marion Forks fish hatchery is located just south of the community.
