No Jesus. No Peace.

Ark of the

Covenant

Know Jesus. Know Peace.

When we are young we sometimes think that if we could just get enough money we would be set for life. We could buy all the stuff that goes to make life comfortable, overcome all our problems and have lots of friends. People will go to all kinds of things to achieve this goal – sometimes even destructive things such as drug dealing, burglary and fraud. Many people turn to gambling to find that elusive pot of gold only to find they have a far bigger problem than they started with. In the process they ruin their own lives and often the lives of others. Materialism is one of the most prominent and harmful characteristics of our present day society. But the Bible (God’s Word) tells us that this idea is wrong! Money and all the things it can buy is not the most important thing in life. There are lots of people with plenty of money who will tell you it is not the answer to life’s greatest need. It does not bring lasting satisfaction and many of these people are still looking for something that will bring them real peace and contentment. It may bring a certain amount of security in this life, but it does not prepare us for eternity and to meet God. It is true that we need some money in order to provide our daily necessities. But if we make it the main goal of our lives we will surely be disappointed. The richest man who ever lived was King Solomon and he said, “I denied myself nothing my eyes desired!” (Ecclesiastes 2:10). Imagine that! Solomon had so much money there was absolutely nothing in the world he could not buy. Nothing – except peace, lasting joy, satisfaction and a worthwhile purpose for living. This is why he also said, “When I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.” As far as the material scene was concerned he had gone right to the top. He had more money, things and land than we could ever dream of, but he said it was not the answer. When he approached the end of his life on earth he gave some very good advice that we should pay careful attention to. He said, “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, ‘I find no pleasure in them’.” (Ecclesiastes 12:1). Solomon knew that if he left God out of his life the time would come when there would be nothing left to live for and all his wealth would not save him. He came to realize that the greatest need we have in our lives is God. God created us to have a relationship with Him, but we have all sinned and wandered away from Him. Isaiah tells us that “all we like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way” (Isaiah 53:6). But the Bible also tells us what God has done to meet our greatest need. He sent His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to pay the price for our sin. When He was born in the little town of Bethlehem, the Angel instructed Joseph that His name was to be called “Jesus” which means “Deliverer” or “Saviour”. Upon the cross at Calvary He died and in His death He took the punishment for our sin. Three days after His death He rose again and, after showing Himself alive to many of His followers, He ascended back to Heaven. He is the only One who can deliver us from our sin and make us right with God. It is only through Him that we can know God and have Him in our lives. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). You need, above everything else, to open your heart and life to the Lord Jesus and receive Him as your personal Saviour and Lord. You can pray to Him right now, asking Him to cleanse you from your sin and invite Him into your life.

Ark of the

Covenant

So what is the Ark of the Covenant?

the Ten Commandments. This box, or chest, was called an “ark and was made of acacia wood overlaid with gold.

God made a conditional covenant with the children of Israel through His servant Moses. He promised good to them and their children for generations if they obeyed Him and His laws; but He always warned of despair, punishment, and dispersion if they were to disobey. As a sign of His covenant He had the Israelites make a box according to His own design, in which to place the stone tablets containing

The Ark was to be housed in the inner sanctum of the tabernacle in the desert and eventually in the Temple when it was built in Jerusalem. This chest is known as the Ark of the Covenant. The real significance of the Ark of the Covenant was what took place involving the lid of the box, 4

known as the “Mercy Seat.” The term ‘mercy seat’ comes from a Hebrew word meaning “to cover, placate, appease, cleanse, cancel or make atonement for.” It was here that the high priest, only once a year (Leviticus 16), entered the Holy of Holies where the Ark was kept and atoned for his sins and the sins of the Israelites. The priest sprinkled blood of a sacrificed animal onto the Mercy Seat to appease the wrath and anger of God for past sins committed. This was the only place in the world where this atonement could take place.

Ark of the Covenant - so there is also only one place for atonement in the New Testament and current times - the cross of Jesus Christ. As Christians, we no longer look to the Ark but to the Lord Jesus Himself as the propitiation and atonement for our sins.

Did you know?

The Trinity is composed of three united Persons without separate existence, so completely united as to form one God. The divine nature subsists in three distinctions - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The German word Dreieinigkeit “three-oneness” expresses the concept quite well.

The Mercy Seat on the Ark was a symbolic foreshadowing of the ultimate sacrifice for all sin - the blood of Christ shed on the cross for the remission of sins. The Apostle Paul, a former Pharisee and one familiar with the Old Testament, knew this concept quite well when he wrote about Christ being our covering for sin in Romans 3:24-25 “…and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith.” Just as there was only one place for atonement of sins in the Old Testament - the Mercy Seat of the

A keen student named Will Taylor was a five-year-old student last year at the Frasertown School, which is near Wairoa where Ralph and Pat Wichers take Bible in schools. From time to time, with the approval of the class teacher, Ralph encourages a student who shows real interest in the Bible, to write an essay on a lesson. Will Taylor is one of those students and this story about Joshua is some of his wonderful work. Well done Will!

Do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord - Ephesians 6:4

JOSHUA THE LEADER

The city of Jericho had strong walls. God promised to help them. They started by marching round the city once every day while the priests blew the trumpets for six days. On the seventh day the army got up early in the morning and marched around Jericho seven times. Joshua yelled, “Get ready to shout! The Lord will let you capture this town and destroy it and everything in it to show it now belongs to the Lord! And God did as He had said He would.

Hypocrisy: The pretending

of having virtues, principles, or beliefs that one in fact does not have.

Russell Hohneck on Psalm 84. Russell emphasised the importance of knowing and experiencing God’s presence. It was then time for leaders’ reports. This is always a particularly interesting part of conference when we learn what is happening in the various branches around the country. Among the encouragements and difficulties encountered we were once again assured that the Gospel continues to make an impact on many lives through the work of MPA.

MPA Hui The weekend of Saturday, March 14, MPA leaders and others interested in the ministry gathered once again at Lakeview Bible Camp near Rotorua for their AGM. People were present from many parts of the country. It was a time of great scenery, great food and great fellowship. For those gathered on the Friday evening there was the renewing acquaintances over tea followed by a time of singing favourite hymns and choruses, a devotional message from Stephen Treloar and a time of prayer. The official conference began after morning tea on the Saturday. The morning consisted of MPA business, a message from the superintendent and a report on progress centred around Headquarters from Tony Ahie plus an update on our website. It was then time for the conference photo and lunch. The afternoon’s programme included a time of singing, followed by a devotional message from Senior Pastor of Riverbend Bible Church, Principle of the Shepherd’s Bible College and MPA Executive Committee member

Who is Jesus? Jesus is the eternal, sovereign God who came to earth as a human being to live a righteous life among humanity. He then died as a perfect sacrifice to deliver all who repent and believe. Jesus, the almighty God of the universe humbly came to earth in human flesh to seek and to save the lost. 7

Seductive Fantasy

of GAMBLING

The

Gambling is a grey splodge on our nation. A disease that eats away at the souls of many and although gambling increases crime rates, degrades morals, ruins finances, destroys families, crushes youth, starves children and shatters lives, people still do it and a lot of them cannot stop. But there is an answer. First and foremost, no matter what way you look at it, gambling is built on sin. If you clear away the glamour, the twinkling lights, catchy tunes and the jackpot sound effects, you’ll find that it’s nothing but a life draining, habitual sin. Gambling may give short term quick highs but the low is a

distressing, habituation of endless chasing. Chasing after the fool’s gold. A gold that your chances of attaining are very slim. Winning big is a common fantasy of our people but our true riches are found only in Christ. God incarnate. Once you realise that and know you need Him, you have started on the road that leads to true life, fulfilment and eternal riches and security. The whole deceitful charm of this evil of gambling, is that it claims that you can gain riches quick, without working for it and in fact the ‘claimed’ investment is so small and the pay off so enormous that

you need not think twice about doing it. This is a lie! The more you get the more you want. The more you win the more you want to win. It is an endless cycle of false hope and misery. A cycle of sin that is hard to be broken. But there is hope for you. Jesus Christ has broken the chains of all sin. He can free you, today. Yes, sometimes it’s not easy when you’re a Christian but you don’t have to be a slave to sin any longer, Jesus Christ paid for your sin and mine when He bore the full wrath of God upon the cross. You too can be free. Seek the Lord Jesus Christ. He can free you from all chains of sin. In Him we have redemption through His blood the forgiveness of sins and eternal life.

The

POKIE TRUST

MACHINE  The money lost on pokie machines is called the gross machine profit (GMP). It is the amount wa gered, less the amount paid back as prizes. Pokies are located in Class 4 venues but they are owned by gaming machine societies, also known as ’pokie trusts’.

 Pokie trusts must pay the current minimum of 37.12% of GMP to community groups in the form of authorised purpose grants. These are meant to benefit the community by funding non-profit organisations. Authorised purposes include amateur sport, charity, non-commercial purposes with community benefits, and the operation of racing.

What’s wrong with:

Gambling?

 The GMP collected by individual venues goes to the pokie trust that owns the machines.  Venues can claim back up to 16% of the GMP for maintenance and upkeep on the machines. Venues are not legally allowed to use this as a source of profit.

 Pokie trusts can keep up to 25.45% of GMP to cover their administrative costs. The government receives 20% of the GMP as gambling duty.  The remaining 1.48% is the Problem Gambling Levy, which is distributed by the Ministry of Health to fund research in the field of problem gambling, and  provide treatment services to people with gambling problems.

It denies the reality of God’s sovereignty by affirming the existence of luck or chance.

It is built on irresponsible stewardship tempting people to throw away their money. It erodes a biblical work ethic by demeaning and displacing hard work as the proper means for one’s livelihood.

To receive salvation you have to realise that you have thought said and done wrong things and therefore are sinful, be truly sorry for your sin and ask God for forgiveness. Let go of everything else you trust. Turn to and fully trust in Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Saviour. There is hope for you in Christ.

Testimony to the power of

Christ Jesus

My name is Perry Rackley. Born and bred in Nelson to a very sporty family. Dad and Mum worked hard to support us and my Dad ran the local Boxing gym. Out of us 6 kids, my 3 older brothers and I were NZ Boxing champions and my 2 sisters played Volleyball for NZ. My Dad was also a NZ Boxing trainer for some years. My Mum

deserved the credit also, she gave her all. I guess I was the black sheep of the family. I got into a bit of trouble in my teens, which started a life of drug abuse, violence and 3 jail terms. I had over 100 boxing fights, 8 NZ titles, represented my country on occasions, but I still had trouble controlling “me”. So, until I was 33 years old I was a mess. I was on 160mls of methadone a day, I had 2 children die, I had lost a house and business and had a failed marriage. I moved to Auckland in 1993 to get away from my old life, but still used drugs. I went to Henderson Baptist church for a Girl’s Brigade meeting so my adopted daughter could join. The next day, a lovely couple bought us over a food parcel. We thanked them and took up their offer to go to church. Wow, that Sunday changed me forever! At the end of the service, they offered prayer and somehow I

ended up there. That’s when I became a child of God. Within 2 weeks, I was off the methadone and other drugs, astounding my doctor and drug counsellor. I thank the Lord for that miracle. Over the next 17 years, as a Christian the Lord blessed me with many children. Biological, step and other children became my family. My lovely wife and I have brought up 14 kids and currently have 17 grandchildren. Now, that brings me to God’s plan for me. Because the Lord blessed me with a connection to kids and youth, ‘Hinemoa House’ approached me about starting a business, to help keep them running. Since boxing was what I knew best, I got a contract with Sport Manawatu and off I went into schools. From that start, our charity ‘Hinemoa House’ is now growing. Boxing in schools got me relationships with kids and then, their families. We run 3 after school clubs, free holiday programs, coffee mornings, a community gym, we have 3 lawn mowers to use, a washing machine

and we are useful for so many other things. We work closely with Police, CYFS, Iwi and schools. This year we are helping out with ‘Stopping Family Violence’ in the Horowhenua because we believe we can make a difference. We can’t do any of this without our supporters. We need financial support and lots of prayer. Thank you to our dedicated Board of Trustees and our amazing volunteers. We are a charity and our staff and volunteers are missionaries doing God’s work. I live by my favourite scripture from Ephesians chapter 6 verses 11 to 14. I put on God’s armour every day to go to work, because Satan rules the earth and he is well established in our area. But, God’s mighty power and grace is with us daily. Thank you, God bless.

Marriage Married to an

Unbeliever

Being unequally yoked with an unbeliever, can be frustrating, discouraging, disheartening, depressing and very unfavourable, but it need not be defiling because one believer can sanctify an entire home. If you are a Christian and married to an unbeliever both the children and the unbelieving spouse are sanctified through you. In this sense sanctify does not refer to salvation, however, it’s referring to being set apart (the basic meaning of sanctify and holy, these terms are from the same Greek root). The sanctification spoken of here is familial and matrimonial but not personal or spiritual. In God’s eyes a home is set apart for Himself when the husband or wife is a Christian. Such a home is not ideal but is far more superior to a home that doesn’t even have one Christian parent influence. One Christian in a home graces the entire home. God is living within that believer and all the blessings and graces that flow into the believer’s life from heaven will spill over to enrich all who are near. What a wonderful truth that is. However, your faith as a believer cannot suffice for the salvation of anyone only yourself, but your love for Christ is often the means of other family members coming to know the Lord, by the power of your testimony. There’s a story of a young woman, that when she was growing up her

14

Matters mother was the only Christian in the entire family. Her mum used to speak of her great love for the Lord Jesus Christ, do Bible lessons with them and was a witness to her family in what she said and did. Eventually, three of the four children came to know the Lord plus a friend of one of the children! Each one stated that the mother had the greatest influence on their decision for Christ. Be encouraged, our God is a God of miracles! Even if your family is divided spiritually and most of the family members are unbelieving and immoral, remember, the entire family is graced by just one believer among them. The Lord guarantees that the presence of just one Christian parent will protect the children. It is not that their salvation is assured but they are protected from undue spiritual harm and that they will receive spiritual blessing because they share in the spiritual benefits of their believing parent. The testimony of just one believing parent in this situation is so powerful and so potent that children should see a clear difference between your life and the unbelieving spouses life, and that may just lead them to salvation later in life. Kia kaha and keep praying!

The Emperor Constantine is one of the major figures of Christian history. After his conversion, Christianity moved swiftly from the seclusion of the catacombs to the prestige of palaces. The movement started the fourth century as a persecuted minority; it ended the century as the established religion of the empire. Thus, the Christian Church was joined to the power of the state and assumed a moral responsibility for the whole society. To serve the state, it refined its doctrine and developed its

this or that, or what kind of processes or methods you use. It comes down to answering these questions: “Am I committed to obedience to the Spirit of God? Am I committed to the controlling influences of the Word of God? Am I going to live out a Christian life?” If you can answer yes to all of those questions, then you are bound to have a successful, fulfilled, God-honoring family life.

In a world of divorce, casual sex, and homosexual unions, “family,” once the bedrock of our culture is becoming a matter of uncertainty and argument. From some quarters, traditional roles for men and women are ridiculed. And standing firm in a healthy, well functioning family is harder than ever. So how can you have a happy home? How can you pass on strong morals to your children in a world going mad? “By following God’s divine plan for family life,” writes Bible teacher, pastor, father, and grandfather John MacArthur in this book. u With so many things taking up your time, people that require your attention, Q work you have to do and places you have to be, there’s not a lot of time to look after your physical body. But as we see in 1 Timothy 4:8 exercise is of some value, but of course not as important as the Godliness of the believer. However, since the physical body is the temple of the Holy Spirit we need to care for it, not to the extent of vanity, but we should consume fresh, clean water and eat good healthy food, such as; fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grain breads and high fibre cereal to name a few. If you can do some light exercise a few times per week, such as take a light walk around the block, that will also help, plus you can enjoy God’s creation while you exercise! Please remember to seek the advice of your health care professional before venturing into a new exercise routine.

Mangakino Gospel Chapel was turned into a marae as a mark of respect for Thomas Lind who had served the Lord so faithfully for nearly 60 years in the Waikato/King Country district. The burial took place at the Mangakino Cemetery in the morning of 15th April and a memorial service was held in in the afternoon in the Mangakino District school hall. Tributes were paid by his family, younger brother Stanley, Charlie Sundgren who talked about Tom’s early life in Feilding and Selwyn Wadsworth who spoke about the different camps Tom had been involved in and especially the setting up of Lake Whakamaru Christian Youth Camp. Tom’s Grandson, Justin Thompson, conducted the memorial service and gave a thought provoking message about the hope and assurance we can have in the risen Lord Jesus Christ. The service was attended by many people, he will be greatly missed in Mangakino. Tom is survived by his wife Mavis three daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

“Hey MPA what shall I do if my ‘friends’ are trying to force me to do things that I don’t want to do?” With so many different ideas around that claim to be “the right thing to do,” it can sometimes be difficult to know what exactly we should do. Fortunately we have the answers to every moral question you may have, all found in the Bible! The first question you should ask your self is “what does the Bible say about this situation?” Or ask someone you trust who knows the Word of God really well to point you in the right direction.

Some practical ways to assist you in doing the right things is to ask yourself... Will doing this: - Produce spiritual benefit? - Lead to spiritual bondage? - Expose my mind or body to defilement? - Benefit others, or cause them to stumble? - Further the cause of the gospel? - Violate my conscience? - Bring glory to God?
