09/05/2018 16:

A WORD FROM THE EDITOR I’m sitting at my desk with aching limbs after an unexpectedly adventurous morning. At approximately 7.30am I heard by son shout “Oh my God” from the sitting room. I could tell it wasn’t a normal ‘I’ve just spilt my cereal on the sofa’ howl so I ran to him. I found him staring at what can only be described as a flash flood running through the garden. We both ran to the front door and sure enough it was there too, rushing down our neighbour’s drive, into our garage and garden, and a short time later, into my kitchen.

NEWS

WITNESHAM CHURCH FETE SATURDAY, JUNE 16

I’ve often wondered how I would cope in an emergency situation and now I know. I shout very loudly! “We have an emergency down here,” I roared to Daniel as I grabbed my wellies and coat and went to investigate. When Daniel arrived on the scene I was waist deep in the ditch with a garden hoe, having assumed the culvert where it goes underground was blocked. On further anaylsis we realised the problem lay elsewhere and Daniel set off to find the source.

Put the date in your diary and come along and enjoy all the bargains and fun at the annual Witnesham Church Fete to be held on Saturday, June 16 from 2pm in the paddock and village hall on Church Lane.

I won’t go into the details here, but while others tried to fix the cause we set about trying to divert the flow away from the house and outbuildings using everything we could lay our hands on. Meanwhile Jack used every towel he could find (even the good ones we keep for guests!) to mop up in the kitchen. It was quite a team effort (practically a ‘meitheal’ as we might say in Ireland) and soon others, including neighbours, joined in and a pump was set up to divert water into the brook.

Grand draw and stall donations welcome: contact 01473 785669

I left them to it at this point (it was deadline day after all) but I’m not sure I want to go home tonight! Just imagine how many towel washes I’ll have to do? And grandma’s garden hoe is still firmly lodged in the ditch! Thank goodness better weather is predicated for next week and summer is on its way. And there’s still plenty of Easter chocolate in the cupboard! Perhaps the one positive I can focus on is the satisfaction of working together with others which I highly recommend. You’ll find many opportunities in the following pages.

NEWS ASHBOCKING NEWS For once, since I’ve been writing for In Touch, I am way ahead of the deadline! Sharon will probably fall off her editor’s chair with shock. My efficiency is probably down to the fact that my daughter is getting married in May, no doubt around the date Sharon will give us for June’s deadline, so I need to sort my article in good time. As I write, it is wet and the temperature has fallen to four degrees. It can only get better for all the May weddings. Please! As reported last month, I have stood down from the position of chair for Ashbocking Parish Council though I will still be a member. Tony Gilbert has agreed to take over with Stephen Stegman remaining as clerk. I can now confirm that Adine Schrankel will serve as vice-chair. We have many projects to complete including a village plan, a VAS sign for The Green and further measures at the crossroads to assist the safety of children crossing the B1078, at a busy time, to catch a bus to school. Thanks to our district and county councillors, we have the money for the supports and the VAS sign. It will tell drivers the speed they are travelling through the village and give them a ‘Thank You’ if they are driving at 30mph or below. I imagine the majority of people passing through our village will be quite shocked when they learn the speed they are driving! This is the final reminder that you’ll get to give your email address to the clerk if you wish to be included in village news items. This may include information about such things as police alerts, bin collections, road works/ diversions, BT works, and things generally concerning parishioners. Today the clerk sent round information about which chemists would be open during the bank holiday. But you have to be in it to get it! That includes all the information about Ashbocking Village Produce, Arts and Craft Show 2018, and other such social events. So please send

in your email. It will not be shared with any other organisation outside Ashbocking village. However, there are now a number of ways you can keep informed of news, events and parish council activity: our new websites, What’s App (News and Social), In Touch magazine, the village noticeboard and emails to and from the clerk. Please never say to me, “oh, I didn’t know about that”. You can find all the contacts at the end of this article. Don’t forget about the Church Flower Festival; June 30 for the cheese and wine and July 1 and 2 for the open church. Please contact Linda Pollard if you’d like to take a part in the festival. That might include sprucing up the churchyard, helping to erect a couple of marquees, serving at the bar, cleaning or manning the church, making a cake for teas, serving the teas, creating a flower arrangement or clearing up afterwards. Please don’t think you have to be good at arranging flowers. As you can see from the list, there are lots of tasks that need to be done. I’ll leave Ashbocking Produce, Arts and Crafts Show until next month. Our editor will be getting anxious about the length of this piece! But finally, we wish every success to all our students taking exams in the next months. Stay calm and do your best. Revision enables you to walk into the exam room feeling confident. They’ll soon be all over! Now, did I remember to invite Uncle George to the wedding? NEWS THE GREAT EXHIBITION OF WITNESHAM 1851 Well it’s all over and for some no doubt a relief, but for others a gap in their week. Plays are always a mixture of both. Four months of rehearsal, seeing, laughing and sometimes drinking with the same people two or three times a week in an endeavour to give local people, plus friends and relations a night out that they will enjoy and hopefully remember. From my personal point of view, I can say with some certainty that it was most enjoyable. We had three new people onboard, Victoria Dowsett, Rose Johnson and Pat Roots, along with familiar faces in Malcolm Goodall, Rosemary Nicol, Tracey Hardy and Michael Trotman. Unfortunately, Stuart Patience had to drop out due to work commitments which meant I had to promote myself to performer!

WITNESHAM AND SWILLAND VILLAGE SHOW 2018 Saturday, July 14, 2pm, Witnesham Village Hall By now most of you should have received your copy of this year’s schedule and hopefully are planning your entries (but there is still time if you haven’t). If you still require a schedule please ask at the drop off points: Witnesham School, Witnesham Baptist Church, Skoobs, The Barley Mow, Liz Farrow (01473 785421). Entry forms need to be in by July 12, except for the cooking disaster class which can be entered on the day. We would like as many of you as possible to enter at least one class to boost the entries as well as enjoying yourself. Parents please encourage your children to enter too. This year there are a few new classes including men and women making the same cake in separate classes; a bit of competition in the family! Talking about families, this year there is a class (No 80) where all the family can work together to produce an exhibit. There are many choices in the flower classes as well as in cookery and handicrafts. Those of you who have cameras could hopefully find an entry for the photo classes. Please re-read the schedule and get inspired. We also need support on the day so would love to see lots of you from 2pm. You can see the entries and also have delicious cake and tea, kindly provided by our WI. There will also be a raffle, outside games and entertainment for all the family. This is a great opportunity for the whole of the villages to come together to meet one another and have an enjoyable time. We look forward to seeing you there.

We had good crowds; they made a noise and laughed. What more could we hope for? We raised a fair amount of money for EACH. The final amount will be known once all the sponsors have paid up. We will also be able to thank Andrew at the Baptist Church with a contribution towards the church for his generous allowance for the use of the building for our rehearsals. Without our sponsors the performance would not have gone ahead so a massive thank-you especially to John Keeble (Bramford) Ltd and The Westerfield Railway. Also, The Barley Mow, Jayrest Interiors, Austwick Berry Estate Agents, Elm Cottage Cattery, CAS electronics, Crettingham Golf club and, of course, The Ipswich Building Society est.. 1849. Outside the cast the real stars were my wife Janet who was the prompt (she sometimes had more words than cast members); Dave and Kathy Whiting who provided the sound and lighting with their normal professional touch; Liz Farrow Front of House; Brian Roots who along with Terry Burrows gave us a wonderful set and stage; Richard Nicol meet and greet; and finally, but by no means least, Terry and Erica Burrows for allowing us again to put on our show at their farm, Manor Farm, in their now famous theatre, The Le Panto Theatre Witnesham. Finally, I have to again mention the cast; what a great bunch and what fun we had. Some of the singing was top rate and the humour between them was again first rate. I hope you can all take pride in your efforts and commitment. You were great, well done! So there we have it for at least another year. If you came along and enjoyed it and would like to be involved in the future then let me know; we will always welcome newcomers. If you didn’t come, think about it next time; we are a village and they’re so much better when we have community spirit! Village Historian and Recorder Steve Henley RECORDERS REPORT One correction from my annual recorder’s report (I think this may have been a printing error): Guy Templeman passed away on December 25, not December 26.

OUT & ABOUT IPSWICH SOROPTIMIST CLUB Our annual charter dinner celebrating the launch of our club in 1952 was held in May. The early minutes are intriguing. The members recruited give an interesting insight into the status of Ipswich women in business and the professions. One early success was persuading local coal merchants to change their delivery systems to meet the needs of poorer women. Internationally the main concern was the plight of people displaced in Europe by the war. Maybe the issues keep changing, but our purpose doesn’t. At least we don’t have to wear hats at meetings now! May was the start of a new club year. We want to raise our own awareness of the lives of different groups of women in Ipswich. As a start a speaker from the Street Pastors will discuss her experiences with us on June 13. We’d be very happy if you would like to join us. In contrast we have booked a stall at Sproughton Village Fete on June 24. We shall be raising money for our new regional project, the Pelandaba Orphans’ Project in Zimbabwe. It was started by one visitor shocked to see orphan children out on the streets because they had nobody to pay their school fees. So she did something about it. Our club is particularly pleased to be contributing in a small way to a country which has had so many troubles. A few years ago we had a close link with Soroptimists in Harare and we partnered with the club in Ipswich Australia to fund the training of two African teachers. More history! If you are interested in coming to hear our speaker on June 13, please contact Joyce, our secretary, for more information and directions: 01394 615659

GREAT BLAKENHAM OVER 50S CLUB Open to anyone over-50 living in Great Blakenham and the surrounding area. We meet from 2-4pm in Great Blakenham Parish Room (opposite the Chequers PH) on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month. The cost per meeting is £1.50 which includes whatever activity is programmed for the afternoon, refreshments and raffle. On afternoons when we may play a couple of games of bingo the tickets are £1 each. At our first meeting in April we had a visit from Andy Malcolm from the Fishermen’s Mission. Andy told us about the work of this important charity helping seamen and their families. Despite all the health and safety measures that exist today, by the very nature of their work seamen may still be lost at sea. Andy also sang some rousing sea shanties to end the visit. We were pleased to give our contribution to the Mission’s funds. With the arrival of a new baby in time for our second meeting of the month we had a quiz all about the Royal Family and the succession to the throne. Can you name them in order for the first 24 with their titles? A lot of groaning when the answers were given! We also had a bring-and-buy which helped boost our funds.

SCHOOLS / SPORT THE OLD SCHOOL HOUSE NURSERY The children are making good use of the lovely summer weather being outside for most of the day. Our sand pits are in the grassy garden and on the front playground where we have buckets and spades ready for action. Filling up the wheelbarrow and taking it round the corner to create a land for dinosaurs or the ponies is very popular.

JOIN US FOR A SUMMER OF TENNIS AT BRAMFORD TENNIS CLUB With summer now just around the corner there’s no better time take up tennis. We welcome people with all levels of experience at both adult and junior level. Our Tennis for Kids courses are proving to be very popular with two full courses already running and more to follow. The club also has special membership offers for first time members that start from as little as £25/year for adults, £10/year for juniors and just £60/year for families. We strongly believe we offer the best membership rates in Suffolk so get in touch to find out how to join us while the offer lasts. LADIES SOCIAL TENNIS The aim of our ladies only sessions on Tuesday evenings at 6.30pm is to encourage more female players to engage with the sport of tennis through a friendly non-competitive and supportive coaching environment. Sessions cost just £4 for members, £5 for non-members and are suitable for all levels of ability. Each week we concentrate on a stroke or tactical aspect of the game using a mixture of shot progressions, drills and fun tennis related games. No need to book in advance, just turn up. Racquets and balls are provided, so all you need are trainers, comfortable clothing and a willingness to take part and have some fun!

Our colourful parachute is a favourite of the children with it billowing up and screams of delight as they rush underneath changing places with someone opposite. We then add balls onto the top with frantic shaking to see which colour flies off first. Counting one, two, three as we lift the parachute up. Some fantastic learning takes place with colours, numbers, listening and following instructions. We use wooden blocks to build a jungle home for the animals, Duplo to create a home for the family of Duplo characters and mega blocks to build a tower as big as they are. Wonderful experiences that sit nicely alongside our regular features this term: cooking something for snack on Monday, French with Dee on Tuesday, dancing with Miss Pamela on Wednesday, visiting the primary school to join in their play and learning on Thursday, and rounding off with Friday when we go out of nursery on our woodland walk. We are now taking bookings for our summer holiday play days – four days during the summer holidays of games, crafts, activities for those who currently attend nursery, or have attended and are now in Reception or Year 1.

JOIN US FOR OUR SUMMERTIME SLAM The Summertime Slam takes place between 2 and 4pm on Sunday, June 24 and is one of the family themed tennis festivals we run during the year. On the day we will run a parent and child tennis competition along with a host of fun tennis related games. Prizes will be available to all participants. So, while the professional players take to the grass courts of Wimbledon and other tournaments across the country why not celebrate the summer of tennis and begin your tennis journey by joining us for our Summertime Slam on Sunday, June 24. To find out more at about any of the items mentioned above please call or text our coach, Carl Douglas on 07553 966380 or visit: https://clubspark.lta.org.uk/BramfordTennisClub

IPSWICH RAVENS OUTDOOR SESSIONS

Our nursery summer outing this year is to Foxburrow Farm at the end of the month when we will visit the coppice and barn garden as we explore and find out about The Hungry Caterpillar. If you would like to visit us please ring 01473 890950 or check out our website.

WITNESHAM AREA PRE-SCHOOL We are pleased to announce that over the summer holidays we are having some building work done. The old EMU building next to us is going to be demolished due to subsidence and the site will be landscaped and turned into a new large fenced outdoor area for us to use. We are also going to have new patio doors fitted which will allow free-flow play between indoors and outdoors. With this new larger area of land we are hoping to offer children the chance to grow vegetables and flowers as well as getting closer to the natural world, drawing on ideas from forest schools. Internally we are making plans to refurbish the space, hopefully with a new kitchen area and a separate area for younger children to use with smaller furniture and age appropriate toys. We are also applying for grant funding to build a conservatory. Once all the work has been done we are planning an open day for everyone to come and have a look around. Witnesham Area Pre-School is a friendly, rural pre-school situated next to Witnesham Primary School. We are open Monday-Friday from 8.30am-3pm and children can attend morning sessions, afternoon sessions or full days. From September we will charge £4 per hour for fee paying children and we also take children on 15 or 30 hours funding. We offer a hot lunch for £2.20. For more information please call Annette on 01473 784934 or visit: www.witnesham-preschool.co.uk

Volleyball is loads of fun and a very friendly game. It’s the only high-energy, no-contact mixed team sport you can play indoors and outdoors – whatever your ability. It’s energetic enough to help with your fitness, but without placing high demands on your body, and good teamwork is important as well as individual skill. This summer is the perfect time to give volleyball a go and find out why it is one of the top three most-played sports in the world. Ipswich Ravens will be holding outdoor sessions at Copleston School (entrance off Foxhall Road) every Saturday from noon-2pm. In addition to our normal grass courts we will provide the opportunity to play beach volleyball on the sand court. These sessions are open to everyone age 14+ and cost £2 for adults, £1 for juniors. We are happy to accommodate people who want to play either competitively or just at a recreational level. All sessions are organised by qualified coaches who also give some playing advice to each individual if needed. So why not go along and take a look? If you like what you see please introduce yourself and you will be very welcome to participate in a session under no obligation. Wear your normal outdoor sports kit, and it’s a good idea to bring water, sun cream and cheap sunglasses – also insect spray if you are prone to being nibbled. CHURCH NEWS CHURCH NEWS FROM SWILLAND & ASHBOCKING Have we got the right Jesus? When I first went to Spain, many years ago, I was taken aback by hearing someone calling out “Jesus! Jesus!”. No, he wasn’t blaspheming. He was calling out to his friend. Jesús is still sometimes used as a name in Spain and South America. (As I write this Jesus has just scored a goal for Manchester City against Liverpool!) Jesus Christ had an ordinary name (it could have been Peter or James – though probably not Fred!). He was fully human, like you and me. He didn’t look different from the people of his time. I like that. Last year Jane and I went on a retreat. The speaker for that week was John Bell (you may have heard him on Thought for the Day on Radio 4). His subject was 10 things they never told me about Jesus. When we were very young we probably heard about Baby Jesus and the shepherds and kings coming to see him. We may also have been told about him dying on a cross and coming alive again. But what did he do between being born and dying – and why did they kill him? If we’re old we may have sung the children’s hymn Gentle Jesus, meek and mild. Really? People don’t usually get executed for being meek and mild! We read of him speaking out against the rulers when he believed they were in the wrong. He called King Herod “that fox!”.

He said that some of the religious leaders were “hypocrites” and “whitewashed tombs”. He drove out the people who were trading in the temple, overturned their tables, scattering their piles of money in all directions because, he said, they were preventing foreigners from having a place for prayer in the temple. Yet he had time for children and for beggars, and he did something to help those who were ill, distressed or marginalised. He welcomed foreigners, and sometimes commented on their deep faith. He treated women as equals (not a universal trait then or for the next 2,000 years). He told a prostitute who cried all over his feet and wiped them with her hair that her love showed she’d been forgiven. He seems to have had as much to say about money and wealth as he had about heaven. He spoke openly about God’s judgement, yet surely no-one spoke more powerfully about God’s love and forgiveness, or showed it more clearly. On the brighter side he obviously loved eating with people, “good” and “bad”. He was often a guest at a supper party. And for his first miracle? He turned water into wine, so the wedding party weren’t ashamed when the wine ran out. (Wouldn’t you and I have done something more “serious” for our first one!) That’s the Jesus I want to get to know and try and follow. (And I haven’t even mentioned how, and why, he died. Or his resurrection.) CHURCH NEWS WITNESHAM BAPTIST CHURCH While as a church we didn’t fully embrace the ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ project as other local churches did, we did spend time praying for it. We Christians can more easily understand what is meant by God’s Kingdom, but to explain it to those who do not attend church is tricky. This is especially true when what is often seen from the church is disagreement and at worst animosity.

We welcome you to worship at 11am each Sunday.

In mid-May a previously high profile politician (now well retired) stated that he wouldn’t attend Bury Cathedral if a certain member of the clergy was taking the service. Others leave churches because they don’t like to type of services that take place – the music is too loud, modern, boring, old fashioned, etc.

Family Time Together is a time when parents and children can come together and do a craft activity, hear a Bible story, sing and pray, all within 45 minutes! Come and enjoy.

So what is meant by God’s Kingdom come? Well in short I suggest that it means that individually we give, dedicating our lives to God by declaring our desire to follow Jesus Christ. Making Jesus king of our lives means we will want to behave, live in a way that pleases Him and then to care for and want the best for others. Others means all people, whether they think like me or agree with me or have faith like me. I should want the best for them whatever we may disagree about. Putting the other person first is something that we don’t see when we look around the world and see that nations are at each other’s throats all the time. God’s Kingdom would see individuals at peace with themselves, with God and so then there is the potential for peace with each other. One may think this is impossible and you may well be correct, but if we accepted God’s Kingdom here now then it may change our individual life and how we approach our neighbours, family and view the injustices in the world and then want to do something to changes things. Christianity calls us to a radical lifestyle that often is at odds with current society and culture. Is it a challenge you want to investigate? Call me. Pastor Andrew

I will miss the people and the opportunity to worship together every day in the college chapel but at the same time it is also exciting to look forward to the future and the opportunity to minister within a rural setting.

‘Now is the time to say goodbye!’ It's hard to believe that I have been on attachment with this benefice for almost two years; the time has gone far too quickly for my liking! The warmth of the welcome at all three churches has been tremendous and when I leave on Sunday 10th June*, it will be with a great deal of sadness: for the friends that I've made and the experiences I've had during my attachment. I have been given the opportunity to learn so much about rural parish ministry which I know will stand me in good stead for my curacy that will be in a benefice of eight parishes elsewhere in Suffolk but not very far away. The two Rev’s (Alan and Catherine), the Ministry Team and the congregations have gone out of their way to ensure I made the most of my time with them. I am truly grateful for everyone's interest and support. Some highlights for me were playing a full part in the Christmas and the

I have been very fortunate to be able to spend my attachment with this benefice and will always look back on this time with great affection and gratitude. Sarah Jenkins

The congregations of all three churches are getting together on *Sunday 10th June in Witnesham Church at 11am for a service to thank Sarah and send her on her way to her next post. Our loss is most certainly their gain. There will be a “bring and share” lunch after the service and everyone is welcome to attend.

The end of my attachment with the benefice coincides with the end of my training at theological college. The second year of training has been as challenging as the first, with a strong focus on preparing us for ordination and subsequent appointment as curates.
