Shakespeare in The Little Apple

®

William Shakespeare continues to resonate in the literary world, generations after his renowned life. Celebrations for the legendary playwright will be ongoing through 2016, with galas particularly focused at each of 50 state locations that host Shakespeare’s First Folio collection. Kansas State University and the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art have earned this distinction as Folio host, with more than a dozen events planned all around Manhattan.

The Ruth A. Wefald Gallery on Beach Museum’s second floor will host the Shakespeare text in February. The First Folio is the first printed collection to contain all of Shakespeare’s plays, and it was created in 1623. Shakespeare wrote 36 plays, half of which had been printed during his lifetime; the rest printed by friends after his 1616 death and collected in the Folio.

“It’s exciting to gather around all of (Shakespeare’s) ideas and music,” said K-State English Professor Don Hedrick, who delivered a First Folio introduction last week at Hale Library on campus.

More First Folio events – Shakespeare in The Little Apple® – occur in Manhattan and are comprised of far more than lecture material: masquerade ball, plays and pub performances. City-wide venues include campus, Manhattan Public Library, Manhattan Arts Center, McCain Auditorium (Midsummer Night’s Dream with actors from the London stage), even a Shakesbeer pub crawl in the downtown area. First Folio highlights:

Check the website at K-State.edu/Shakespeare400 for a full rundown of events related to the First Folio.

• Opening reception Feb. 4, Beach Museum • Community-wide celebration Feb. 20, Manhattan Public Library • First Folio Gallery Feb. 25, Beach Museum • Closing reception Feb. 28, Beach Museum

Author Lofaro highlights Woman’s World conference

Woman’s World 39th annual conference sponsored by Manhattan Christian College is a premier, non-denominational gathering that attracts about 650 guests to Manhattan. This year’s events are Feb. 26-27 at the K-State Student Union.

Ellie Lofaro is the keynote speaker at Saturday’s sessions. Lofaro carries a disarming demeanor and quick wit to the speaker’s podium, as she delves into life's deeper questions. Lofaro is author of five books and is working on a sixth. Hotel blocks are available at these hotels: Bluemont, Four Points by Sheraton, Holiday Inn at the Campus, Holiday Inn Express, Parkwood Inn and Suites and Quality Inn and Suites. Consult the Manhattan Christian College website for details (Mccks.edu/articles/whats-name-39th-annual-womans-world-conference).

Spotlight shines on Gasteyer at Wareham

The McCain Performance Series is back in action in February, and what a February slate it will be! Ana Gasteyer of Saturday Night Live comedic fame brings her sultry musical performance to the Wareham Opera House. Gasteyer played some of the most famous SNL characters, and you’ll separate the comedic Gasteyer from the glorious-voiced performer when she belts out tunes like a well-polished nightclub entertainer. An Evening with Ana Gasteyer, Feb. 19 at the Wareham Opera House with 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. performances, she’ll leave you dazzled with her musical talents from a bygone era.

Additional McCain Performance Series, including Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream on Feb. 5, are listed in the Cultural Events listing on page 3 of Tourism Topics.

Wonders of the world, at 200 miles above Earth

For centuries, stargazers have looked toward the skies and contemplated the nature of being and coexistence with planets, stars and the entirety of the galaxy. It’s a mammoth atmosphere out there! Pretend you can take a satellite ride, turn the telescope around and gaze at Earth and the Milky Way from the heavens above. With a trip to Flint Hills Discovery Center over the next three months, visitors can do just that. A View From Space exhibit opened in January and continues through April. The interactive displays will include breathtaking photography of asteroids, planets, stars … all from a satellite’s perspective. Most satellites orbit the Earth at around 200 miles, though weather and communications satellites hover at 22,236 miles in geosynchronous orbit. The views are splendid, and the exhibit high in the “hands-on” capacity.

• A complementary exhibit in the Tallgrass Gallery area, How People Make Things, will focus on the manufacture of every-day items. This exhibit illustrates the ideas, people and technology from the start as raw materials to the transformation into the finished products we buy off of store shelves.

Week of hoops at state tournaments

It’s tough to beat March Madness, and the high school equivalent is just around the corner for Class 2A in Manhattan. Volunteers are needed (T-shirt sales, ticket sales, ticket takers, program sales and pass gate attendants) for the upcoming 2A state basketball tournaments at Bramlage Coliseum. Manhattan hosts 16 teams, boys and girls, with 16 games over four days on the K-State campus. Contact Emma Hubbell (emma@manhattan.org) with inquiries about volunteer opportunities or call the Manhattan Convention and Visitors Bureau at 785-776-8829.

The Claflin-Central Plains girls have taken home consecutive 2A state basketball titles, and the Oilers sit at No. 1 in the state rankings again this season as the season heads into the last full month of the regular season. The 2A state boys and girls basketball tournaments are March 9-12. More information will follow in the March issue of Tourism Topics about the tournament and team hosts.

Manhattan attractions aplenty of Kansas Bucket List What’s on your bucket list? Bucket list items come as varied as personal interests, and the Travel KS website – online home for Kansas Tourism – recently listed the Top 70 Kansas Bucket List of the best experiences the state has to offer.

Prominent on the list includes a Flint Hills exploration of the magnificent rolling vistas that encompass Manhattan, and the Flint Hills Discovery Center that details the region’s ecological value as one of the world’s last expanses of native prairieland. Within the tallgrass prairie lies the Konza Prairie with gorgeous panoramas of breathtaking landscape, another Kansas Bucket List item.

The Kansas River Trail is another outdoor gem that landed on the Bucket List, with paddling excursions a regular activity along the Kaw from Junction City through Manhattan.

The heartland embraces a college football gathering and the fragrant aromas of tailgating that envelop the fall air. The atmosphere at Bill Snyder Family Stadium is difficult to match, and a K-State Wildcats’ football game is among the listings.

The Home of the 1st Infantry Division (Big Red One), Fort Riley Army military post is another on the Kansas Bucket List. Fort Riley is also home to the 1st Infantry Division Museum, the U.S. Cavalry Museum and Custer House, a living quarters that dates to Fort Riley’s establishment in 1853.

A decade of classical music landed the Symphony in the Flint Hills on the Kansas Bucket List, and more Bucket List items include the Oz Museum in Wamego with 2,000 artifacts from the 1939 film classic, and the Dwight D. Eisenhower Library in Abilene.

Travel KS is the website home to Kansas Tourism. You’ll find the Kansas Bucket List at Travelks.com/ksbucketlist.

MH1K: Challenge your legs, lungs, mind and spirit

A .62-mile distance is a virtual sprint for most avid runners or at least a hearty warm-up jog. Add an element of difficult terrain, though, and the challenge increases. The inaugural MH1K presented by Manhattan Running Company qualifies on the high-demand scale because of the testing elements presented. The running course will be Bluemont Hill, a moderately tough hike under normal conditions, a fairly grueling cardiac dash when pressed with a time dynamic. That’s not to say people can’t also come out for a fun hike up the scenic incline to enjoy an early-morning exercise session.

It’s the first-of-its-kind run that has made MRC such a valued commodity here in Manhattan. The run starts at 10 a.m. Feb. 27 in Goodnow Park, and registration can be done on race day or the MRC website (Manhattanrunningco.com). Running enthusiasts, also mark your calendars for the 38th annual St. Patrick’s Day races (March 12) and the second annual Bill Snyder Highway half-marathon and 5-kilometer runs (May 21). Get fit, and Run MHK!

2016 Regional Leaders’ Retreat Wrap Up Continued from page 1

Sponsor and welcomed the participants to the beginning of the Regional Leaders’ Retreat; Lucy Williams, Manhattan Chamber Board Past-Chair and Vice President/Trust Officer from The Trust Company, who reviewed the highlights from the 2015 Regional Leaders’ Retreat; and Kristin Brighton, Manhattan Chamber Board Chair and Principal of New Boston Creative Group, who reviewed highlights from the Chamber’s first ever Inter-City Visit to Columbia, MO and encouraged participants to attend the upcoming Inter-City Visit to Fayetteville, AR in September 2016.

Spread throughout the two days of sessions was the opportunity for all retreat attendees to once again participate in a text message-based polling system. Each participant was asked several questions at the end of the Fort Riley presentation and results were shown immediately, giving a real time representation of the opinions of the regional leaders in the session. At the end of many of the sessions each table had a chance to select a report-out leader who shared the results of a round-table discussion with the larger group. These discussions will be deliberated in more detail by the participating Chambers of Commerce Board of Directors. Manhattan sponsors for the event include: Sink, Gordon & Associates, INTRUST Bank, Hawley Printing, Hi-Tech Interiors, Bruce McMillan Architects, Bayer Construction, and Flint Hills aTa Bus. Thank you for your sponsorship!

Business Barometer

Sales or revenue numbers are a typical measuring stick, but be careful. While these numbers are important, they only tell part of the story. Rising revenues may show increased business activity but they don’t tell us how much it takes to get a new client or how much we made on the new sales. This is why acquisition costs and margins may be better measures of success.

Military Update

Due to the New Year’s Holiday, the Military Relations Committee (MRC) did not hold a luncheon in January. MRC spent much time this month planning future luncheons and events for the coming year.

The MRC did join the Junction City Military Affairs Committee (JC MAC) for a combined breakfast at Riley’s Conference Center featuring MG Wayne W. Grigsby, Jr., Commanding General of the First Infantry Division and Fort Riley. More than 150 Manhattan and Junction City community members joined together with soldiers and spouses from Fort Riley to listen to our guest speaker and enjoy a meal.

The first MRC Luncheon of 2016 will be Wednesday, March 2 at Holiday Inn at the Campus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

What Are You Measuring?

As an entrepreneur, you’re not sitting down with a boss for regular performance reviews. So how do you know if you’re on the right track? This is a question I get frequently. Better understanding what to measure in your business is a key starting point.

Efficiency measures, ratios like Inventory Turnover (Cost of Sales / Average Inventory) and Accounts Receivable Turnover (Revenue / Average Accounts Receivable), are also important measures. Determining how well you’re managing inventory levels and credit can help you make informed strategic decisions that positively impact cash flow.

February 2016

For many new businesses, valuable information is not always in the form of quantifiable data. Knowledge gained – things like customer behaviors, user feedback, and internal capabilities – helps us identify why something is or is not working. This can be vital to the growth and scalability of a new business. I encourage you to identify some key metrics in your business and commit to understanding and measuring them in 2016.

Index is published quarterly by C2ER – The Council for Community and Economic Research.

The Cost of Living Index measures regional differences in the cost of consumer goods and services, excluding taxes and non-consumer expenditures, for professional and managerial households in the top income quintile. It is based on more than 90,000 prices covering 60 different items for which prices are collected quarterly by chambers of commerce, economic development organizations, and university applied economic centers in each participating urban area. Small differences should not be interpreted as showing a measurable difference. The composite index is based on six component categories – housing, utilities, grocery items, transportation, health care, and miscellaneous goods and services which are not all shown on chart above.

The Guinness World Record we will challenge is the most people tagged in a selfie. Current record for the most people tagged in a selfie is 268 participants and was achieved by Huawei (Bolivia) at the Plaza San Francisco in La Paz, Bolivia, on July 19, 2015. How can you help? We invite you to join us at 2 p.m. April 10 and pass the date along to all volunteer organizations you participate in, work with or know of. We want this to be a success for the entire community. Volunteer organizations come in all shapes, sizes and may include, but not limited to, a church, school district, alumni group, 4-H club, social sorority, Fort Riley, favorite college/university, nonprofit or Chamber of Commerce. They all matter and make a difference in the Flint Hills region.

For questions or to sign your volunteer organization up to participate, please contact Kim Dahlsten at 776-8829 or kim@manhattan.org.

“I look at it from an opportunity to build relationships. Once I got involved in committees, those committees were really good to me and helped me to get to know people. The Chamber gives us an opportunity for networking, for spreading our wings, and the educational pieces. That’s the value proposition I derive from the Chamber.”
