ourteen organisations have united to launch a community coalition to uplift Mamelodi. “The more we come together the better,” said Malashi Mabunda, the driving force behind the initiative. The organisations’ first battle was against rape and gender violence. They came together during the Sexual and Gender-based Violence Campaign at the Stanza Bopape Community Hall in Mamelodi East in June. The campaign aimed to mobilise the community and educate rape survivors on what to do and where to go to get help after an attack. At the event, Mbuyiselo Botha, government and media relations man-

ager of the Sonke Gender Justice Network, called on men and boys in the community to change the way in which they relate to women. Botha said this would help to prevent sexual abuse. According to Botha, none of the perpetrators of rape were born violent but have been taught from an early age that they can solve their problems through violence. “Until we deal with how boys are raised, the problem of rape will remain,” he said. His sentiment was echoed in the testimony of rape survivor, Lerato* aged 24, who was attacked in Mamelodi in June 2010.

She said she would like to see men being men. “To not hurt women, but to protect them.” Meleney Kriel, co-founder of Viva Village, explained some of the practical steps a victim can take after a rape attack. She said rape survivors need to be taught that they have to preserve evidence to help catch the perpetrator. “Resist that shower, [that] urge to wash that trauma away, that pain,” said Kriel. The committee currently consists of the following organisations: Sonke Gender Justice Network; LifeLine; City of Tshwane Department of So-

cial Development in Mamelodi; Department of Health and Social Development in Mamelodi; Tshwane Metro Police Social Crime Prevention; Community Police Forum; Viva Foundation; Meetse A Bophelo; Field Band Foundation, Urban Fellas; Mamelodi East Police Station, Thuthuzela Centre; OUT Well-Being; the Church Council and Mamelodi community members. According to Mabunda, the work they are doing together is still in its early days. They are not yet clear about the future of the committee. Mabunda hopes to get it involved with the 16 days of Activism Against Gender Violence World Aids Day.

“It is not our last project, we are going to tackle other issues,” said Mabunda. *Identity withheld to protect the dignity of the victim
