From the Chairman Dear Fellow Retreatants: “A year of promise and growth” is a good way to sum up 2013 at Malvern Retreat House. As we began our 101st year, fresh from the excitement 2012’s Centennial Celebrations, we immediately set a course to begin our journey towards the next milestone Anniversary, setting our sights on what Malvern needs to do to grow and remain relevant for upcoming generations. We began identifying those areas that need addressing, thereby embarking on the task of crafting a Strategic Plan, and updating our Mission and Vision Statements, to keep us on course. We thank you, our loyal retreatants and supporters, members of our Board, dedicated staff, and countless volunteers, who generously give of your time, talent, and treasure as we ensure the viability and relevance of Malvern Retreat House while securing its future. Thanks to your generosity, plans are underway to begin the updates needed in our Main Retreat House, including the installation of an elevator, air conditioning, and other necessary improvements in St. Joseph Hall, using funds from our Capital Campaign. Through these improvements, we can be assured that retreatants are not hindered in their ability to attend their retreats, and they will be more comfortable year-round in their rooms. While we always eagerly look forward, we gratefully look back at the visionary leaders who have guided this Ministry over the past 101 years. With the publication of Malvern Retreat House’s Anniversary Book, we realize we have long been at the leading edge of the New Evangelization, which has been in practice at Malvern since its inception. Perhaps it wasn’t called by that name when John Ferreck recruited the first men to attend the inaugural retreat back in 1912. Since then, how many countless souls have entered Malvern’s gates to behold the majestic tree-lined driveway, experiencing anew that sense of peace and tranquility? They return home, refreshed and renewed from their retreat, eager to spread the Good News and encourage others to experience the same closeness with our Lord and Savior. No, evangelization isn’t new at Malvern Retreat House. It has been our way of life here since the beginning. And so, this earnest longing to spread that Good News leads us to look ahead to Malvern’s future, as outlined in the new Strategic Plan and reflected in our updated Mission and Vision Statements. As you read through the accomplishments outlined in the pages of this Annual Report, it is encouraging to see how many initiatives are already underway, including the new Young Adult gatherings and the outreach to retreatants through weekly Gospel reflections, to name only a couple. These initiatives leave me optimistic and encouraged about the direction in which Malvern is headed. It is with gratitude that I thank you for your generosity and vision in helping to make Malvern what it is today. Together, we look forward to bringing more people to Christ through the retreat experience at this Oasis of Peace, where they can refresh and restore their relationship with the Lord. Prosit!

From the President Who Thinks of These Things? I recently read an email that was titled, “Who Thinks of These Things!!” The email went on with some catchy phrases: • How does Moses make tea? Hebrews it. • W hat does a clock do when it gets hungry? It goes back four seconds. • Jokes about German sausage are the wurst. • Cartoonist found dead at home… details are sketchy. This humorist works with common words and phrases to create a few chuckles. Not quite Vaudeville, but pretty close. At Malvern Retreat House, we don’t have humorists, but we do have great Rectors, Retreat Directors and faithful retreatants who have some phrases that often help keep us upbeat, focused and energized to live a life of discipleship. These phrases truly represent our mission and ministry. • We believe, therefore we speak! • Prosit! (A Latin phrase meaning “May this be for your benefit.”) • The New Evangelization • Silence • Private Adoration • Thanksgiving Who thinks of these things? Jesus, St. Paul, Popes, St. John Neumann, Fr. Terrence Shealy, Malvern retreatants… Malvern is enriched with timeless traditions and rich rituals that have guided over 1 million retreatants for 102 years. These messages and practices help us make a meaningful retreat and carry out our roles as disciples of Jesus when we return to our community. Best wishes in striving for a full life of discipleship. Many thanks are due to our Board of Directors, CA Captains, the Associates of Malvern, Recruiters and Associate CA Captains, and our loyal retreatants who pray and work to recruit and retain retreatants for our ministry. I applaud

everyone for their faithful and loyal support of Malvern. This year we completed a new Strategic Plan, including a new Mission and Vision Statement with articulated Core Values. This 10-month process involved focus groups of CA Captains and Recruiters, women, young adults, seasoned retreatants, Board members and Associates. We will be distributing this document shortly, and we will ask all of you to help us in implementing the goals and objectives articulated. We have been blessed to receive a $1million dollar pledge towards our Capital Campaign. This anonymous donor’s generosity is greatly appreciated and will help us with our operational budget and the renovation and upgrade of St. Joseph’s Hall. Please see the Development accomplishments for details on how other donors have supported our ministry. A Matching Gift element of the donation requires us to match $500,000 of the gift. In other words, your gift to the Capital Campaign after January 1, 2014, will be matched by the donor. Achieving this challenge will enable us to turn that million dollar gift to a million-and-a-half gift. When you receive your request for support, please help us double your contribution for our Campaign. Please read the accomplishments to see our successes and special congratulations to our recruiters, website developer, all our donors, new retreat groups and a special welcome to our first Italian Rector, Rev. Msgr. Joseph Marino and our new Recruitment Manager, Patrick Benner.

Prosit!

from the Director of Development President John F. Kennedy once said, “Success has many fathers, and failure is an orphan.” The year 2013 was a successful year for Malvern Retreat House, and it truly is a shared success. As we have done in the past six years, we again hosted approximately 20,000 retreatants in 2013. Who are these people who take the time, and make the time, to journey to Malvern to reflect, refresh and rejoice with our Lord? They are the Men and Women of Malvern attending their annual retreat, the high school students participating in Kairos, the young adults who want to continue to grow in their faith, the married couples who want God in their marriage, the families built on a foundation of faith, and so many other people looking to get closer to Christ. This is the success in which you share. You are Malvern. Your prayers and generous support make all this possible. On behalf of our Founders, Board, associates and retreatants, I thank you for sharing your time, talent and treasure in support of this wonderful

blessing we call Malvern Retreat House. We begin 2014 with a spirit of renewal, eagerly awaiting the start of the refurbishing of Saint Joseph’s Hall in the late spring. May this restoration of our grand old mansion remind us of the important role Malvern has played in the lives of those who came before us and will play in the lives of those who pass through our gates. May God Continue to bless you. Prosit,

Michael Norton Director of Development

FROM THE RECTOR Dear Friends, I greet you as friends, just as Jesus Christ has addressed disciples throughout the ages. Although He had lived with His first disciples for only a short time, Jesus surely felt their friendship by how they welcomed Him into their homes and lives. Since my arrival here in July, I have felt your welcome and openness to my presence. You welcomed me into your Malvern home, and what is even more touching, you have invited me into your lives. You have allowed me to lead you in retreat; you have welcomed me as your priest. I cannot count the number of retreatants who have greeted me with friendly words of encouragement and promises of prayers. I am so grateful for your friendship; I am so happy to be with you. And, in this spirit of friendship Jesus welcomes us to become disciples in His name. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father. It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain (John 15:15-16). With these words we have been commissioned by our Friend and Savior to go forth and bear fruit! In response to Jesus, we, the men and women of Malvern Retreat House, are making a conscious commitment as disciples of the New Evangelization. For years you have come to Malvern to deepen your friendship with Jesus and have returned home to share with others how your retreat strengthened that relationship. Evangelization is not new to Malvern retreatants who routinely invite others to come to Malvern to see and hear what life in Christ can do for them.

Complicated? No more complicated than living a life energized by the love of Jesus. All efforts at sharing the Good News begin with a personal encounter with Jesus that is nourished through daily reflection on the Gospel and prayer. The New Evangelization and Malvern are made for each other! This is our future: We are the forerunners of the disciples of the 21st Century! Malvern provides the spiritual setting; the Holy Spirit provides the direction; and Christ Jesus commissions and equips his friends through Word and Sacrament for the New Evangelization. Truly a story of friends working to build up the Kingdom of God! God, our Father, I pray that through the Holy Spirit I might hear the call of the New Evangelization to deepen my faith, grow in confidence to proclaim the Gospel, and boldly witness to the saving grace of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. (United States Catholic Conference of Bishops, 2013) Prosit,

Msgr. Joseph T. Marino Rector

Technology Updates at Malvern Retreat House

WEBSITE REDESIGN Malvern Retreat House introduced our new WordPress-powered web site in November 2013. The integrated mobile-friendly site means there is no need for a separate mobile app. • The website features new blogs. Two written by our rector, Msgr. Joseph Marino – Weekly Gospel Reflections and Treasures of the Church – provide a way for Malvern Retreat House to stay connected with retreatants after their retreats. New posts are publicized on Facebook & Twitter, and are also sent out as e-blasts. The blog written by Patrick Benner, Malvern’s Recruitment Manager, features Recruiting tips for Captains. RPS SYSTEM In 2013, The Retreat Committee initiated new improvements to the Recruiting and Retention Process using the RPS system: • A comprehensive overview of the RPS Instructions were included/added to the CA Captain Workbook • RPS Instructions for “Managing the Retreat” were placed at each computer in each Registration Hall to assist in making Friday night Registration a smooth process. • Also new in 2013, Retreatants now have the option to pre-register and pre-pay over the RPS in monthly installments for the next year’s retreat immediately following their retreat. The idea is to ease the burden of a retreatant paying a lump sum.

Young Adult Initiatives Monthly Young Adult Get-Togethers Young Adult gatherings for those in their 20s and 30s were implemented in October 2013; participants meet every fourth Sunday of each month for Mass, dinner, and fellowship. Malvern has regularly welcomed an average of 20-30 young adult men and women each month from surrounding towns in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. Many young adult participants have been pleased with their spiritual growth and formed connections by attending Malvern’s monthly get-togethers.

Retreat Helps Young Adults Discover Individual Spiritual Gifts Malvern Retreat House was filled with enthusiasm as young adults discovered their spiritual gifts and strengthened their relationship with Christ during the Young Adult Retreat: “Changing Water into Wine: Becoming the Person God Created You to Be.” A diverse group of 78 young adults enjoyed learning about their charisms and exploring their God-given gifts using the Catholic Spiritual Gifts Inventory. The retreat featured conferences, a Holy Hour in front of the Blessed Sacrament, a Guided Examination of Conscience, Confessions, and small group discussions. The response was overwhelmingly positive. “The Young Adult Retreat at Malvern Retreat House was a wonderful experience. I was overwhelmed by the beauty of so many young adults gathered together in one place. It was a great opportunity to reconnect with some old friends and to meet some new ones,” said Becca Pine, a Young Adult Retreat planner and attendee. “The highlight of the retreat for me was taking the Spiritual Gifts Inventory. It was a concrete way to grow in my relationship with God, to come to understand some of the gifts He has given to me. I highly recommend this retreat to others, and I look forward to attending more Young Adult retreats in the future!”
