Many worlds in one space A festival does not happen in a void. It is entangled in many contexts – not only those easily identifiable: its concrete place in space and time. Violent changes that happen in the world become impulses to search for new aesthetics and methods of communication, they also redefine the role of art itself. The stage sometimes becomes a vehicle for revealing conflicts and differences of values, a catalyst of discussion on difficult subjects which require a multifaceted approach. That kind of power of the stage could be experienced during the 24th edition of Malta Festival Poznań. It will go down in history not only because it was the first presentation of performing arts from Latin America of this scale, but also because of the unprecedented movement of social dissent in connection with the planned performance of the legendary Golgota Picnic, directed by the curator of the theme section of Malta, Rodrigo García. The play, which takes a stance against the consumerism and egoism of the European society, ignited a massive attack of right-wing and ultra-catholic circles on the Festival and on the freedom of artistic expression. With time, we shall observe how these events will be assessed by history in the broader social and political context of Poland in 2014. However, what we already know 4

is that the protests against and for the performance were an unprecedented exercise in civic action and they showed that theatre offers an important space for communication with the world and between ourselves. This report presents a shortened overview of two festivals organised by Malta Foundation in 2014 during which artists endeavour in various ways – through the medium of contemporary music, theatre, dance and cinema – to capture and comprehend the complexity of the world and try, through the art they create, to render it closer to us, but never simple. Malta Festival Poznań, which saw its 24th edition in 2014, is the biggest festival of performing arts in Poland and has been successively strengthening its position on both the international and European forum. The 300 Malta Festival Poznań 2014 events were attended by 75 000 people. The program involved 1118 artists, activists and intellectuals from 19 countries around the world. For 3 weeks Malta Generator on Plac Wolności as well as 30 other locations around the city became the sites of theatre and dance performances, concerts, films, exhibitions, meetings and events for children.

The “Latin America: Mestizos” Idiom was the biggest presentation of modern art from that continent Poland had seen in years. The program created by the curator Rodrigo García included more than a dozen events: theatre and dance performances, installations, happenings and exhibitions. Most artists presented their work in Poland for the first time. Several of these works were Malta Festival productions prepared especially for the Idiom. The invited artists showed that the context in which they create requires having a direct dialogue with the world, quick reactions to the socio-political situation, taking a stance, being an activist. Many artists took on the most recent history of Latin America and the effects of globalisation which they experience in their countries – social inequality, excessive consumption. Peruvian choreographer Amapola Prada showed through dance that revolution and freedom start in our own bodies – in individuals; Emilio García Wehbi directed the modern version of King Lear; Columbians from Mapa Teatro took the viewers on a hypnotising journey around the history of their country plagued by issues connected with the drug industry; Brazilian choreographer Marcelo Evelin in his dance performance confronted the viewers with the 14

presence of people who symbolised the bodies of the excluded, the invisible in the social and political system; Tania Solomonoff from Mexico created a scenery inspired by the favelas in Mexico City; while Cecilia Bengolea captivated the audience on Plac Wolności with her mixture of jungle, cumba, reggae and en pointe dance, showing the intertwining of the South-American and European traditions. The La sensación de ser Mr. Luxus Reinstaldt installation was an important project connecting Poland and Argentina presented in the space of the Old Slaughterhouse. It was created by Candelaria Saenz Valiente, who now lives in Warsaw, but originally comes from Buenos Aires. Her work prepared in collaboration with Marcin Masecki is an effect of her meeting with Rodrigo García. The program of the Idiom included projects by: Emilio García Wehbi (Argentina), Tania Solomonoff (Mexico), Luis Garay (Argentina), Katia Tirado (Mexico), Mapa Teatro (Columbia), Gerardo Naumann (Argentina), Marcelo Evelin (Brasil), Candelaria Saenz Valiente (Argentina/Poland), Erika Diettes (Columbia), Cecilia Bengolea & François Chaignaud (Argentina/France), Amapola Prada (Peru). Performances of Golgota Picnic by Rodrigo García and Estados de excepción by Lorena Wolffer were also scheduled, but they did not take place due to reasons beyond the control of Malta Foundation.

The visual and theatrical program of the Idiom was supplemented by a film cycle presented in the Ballet School Courtyard (the program included over a dozen of documentaries and featured films depicting political, cultural and social life in Latin American countries as well as masterclasses conducted by Rodrigo García and his actors – Juan Lorient and Juan Navarro. Several hours of their work resulted in a play which performatively interpreted the events that made it impossible to stage Golgotha Picnic in Poznań. The two-day forum entitled Two Faces of Latin America gave us an opportunity to review the Latin America program on Malta. The raised topics included historical analogies between South America and Central Eastern Europe, current social situation of Latin America’s indigenous inhabitants; we also had a conversation with Rodrigo García and other idiom artists, Luis Garay and Erika Diettes, about the differences between the ways European and Latin American artists work.

Rodrigo García Golgota Picnic One of the most anticipated performances of the festival was Golgota Picnic by Rodrigo García. The Idiom Curator shows a world in which people are not able to take an ethical stance against violence, exploitation and injustice, and instead they choose egoistic ignorance, reducing the mystery of Golgotha into a trivial picnic. Mass protests of ultra-catholic circles forced the Festival to cancel the performance. According to Police estimations, 30 thousand people were to take part in the manifestations, there was a threat of riots, the scale and form of which could be dangerous both for the actors and the audience, as well as the festival audience in the open space of Malta Generator on Plac Wolności and bystanders.

After the cancellation of Golgota Picnic on the days of the planned performances (27sth and 28th of June) people started spontaneously organising play readings and screenings of the audiovisual recording of the play. A special event was organised on 26 June in Nowy Teatr in Warsaw: the actors of Rodrigo García read the play, and the pianist Marino Formenti played The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross by Haydn, which has an important role in the original performance. Moreover, the scheduled debate about the festivalisation of culture was changed into a debate on the question: Who Needs Freedom?. It was attended by Rodrigo García, Michał Merczyński, Filip Berkowicz, Beata Chmiel, Hugo De Greef, Krzysztof Materna, prof. Krzysztof Podemski and prof. Andrzej Wirth, prof. Suely Rolnik and Gerardo Naumann – one of the artists of the “Latin America: Mestizos” Idiom. The President of Poznań Ryszard Grobelny also attended the meeting and sat among the audience. Audio and video recordings of this several hour long debate are available on the Internet site of the Festival. Malta Foundation prepared a bi-lingual multimedia report about the events around Golgota Picnic in Poznań, which was published in autumn 2014.

Theatre

Malta Theatre program was realised in many locations of the city and it comprises of international and local projects. For the second time in the row, the Festival’s response to the audience’s need for shared experience of open air events took the form of open theatre performances at Malta Generator on Plac Wolności. Thanks Malta Generator Poznanians and Festival guests could see over a dozen free theatre and dance performances from all over Poland, as well as Belgium, France and Argentina. In 2014 the theatre stage hosted plays from abroad (Dub Love directed by Cecilia Bengolea and François Chaignaud, the etudes from P.A.R.T.S. school), as well as important productions of Polish artists. Moreover, thanks to Malta’s participation in the House on Fire European network, the Malta audience had the chance to see Woe directed by Edit Kaldor, one of the most original and renowned artists of the European scene. Kaldor, a Hungarian artists who has been living in Amsterdam for years, focuses in her work on the internal experiences of people who seem to be isolated and unable to communicate. Kaldor’s work combines elements of fiction and documentary, she cooperates mostly with unprofessional actors, she often includes digital media into her plays. Woe is a simple, but very direct and compelling tale about childhood and youth - a time of defining the limits of one’s freedom. 32

As a part of the open scene program we’ve presented plays inspired by the main theme of the Idiom – Latin America. It was the first time the Festival presented the work of the widely renowned improvisation theatre Klancyk, which performed TransKlancyk, an over an hour long improvisation inspired by a journey to Latin America. The actresses Agata Bronisz, Eva Rufo, Justyna Suliba and Bernadetta Szwarc, used the popular formula of cuentacuentos and prepared a performance which was part storytelling session part play entitled Rayuela, during which they transported the audience into the world of Julio Cortazar. We also saw the monodrama of Piotr Rawicki entitled Tato nie wraca, directed by Piotr Ratajczak – the director of Teatr Dramatyczny in Wałbrzych – based on the personal experience of the actress Agnieszka Przepiórska, a random encounter with her estranged father. The play Mama Perform on the other hand is concentrated on the topic of motherhood and it is a shared work of the choreographer Maria Stokłosa and the mothers from Mama Foundation. The play shows real women, their worries and dreams, but also the power of social and cultural ideas, which influence their daily life.

Another group work, Zachem. Intervention, is the effect of the cooperation of Aleksandra Jakubczak and Małgorzata Wdowik, who are graduates of the Poznań University Department of Theatre who are now studying the Direction Department of the Theatre Academy in Warsaw, and the former employees of Zakłady Chemiczne Zachem. Their individual experiences and archive materials became an inspiration for reflection on the relationship between people and work, and the mechanisms which influenced Polish political transformation. The Retun of the Vikings project was created as a result of a cooperation between Dorota Abbe with the inhabitants of the Homeless Shelter No.1 in Szczepankowo. The starting point for this work was the idea pf persuading the inhabitants of Poznań to create a homeless shelter in Poznań. This project, however, is not only a recording of individual stories of homelessness, but also a story about the dreams of people who are featured in it. Malta 2014 also saw the second edition of the “Wielkopolska: Revolutions” cycle, under the curatorship of Agata Siwiak, organised by the Department of Culture of the Marshall Office of Wielkopolskie Voivodeship. Best not go there is a play directed by Michał Borczuch, prepared by the children from the care centre in Szamocin, which is part realistic part fantastic tale about the genius loci of Szamocin seen through the eyes of a child. In the Nights and Days Project the seniors from the Wrzos Singers’ Group from Zakrzewo, accompanied by Iwona Pasińska, Mikołaj Mikołajczyk and Adam Ferency use the celebrated novel of Maria Dąbrowska to touch upon the issue of old age. 36

The program Malta Festival Poznań 2014 also featured works of Poznań theatres - both the conventional and the alternative ones. Teatr Nowy presented its award-winning and emotionally received staging of Adama Mickiewicz’s Dziady directed by Radosław Rychcik, which raised many emotions. The director placed Mickiewicz’s drama in American reality, and switched the focus to slavery, persecution, racism and fight for equal rights. Dr@cula. Vagina dentata directed by Agata Biziuk from Teatr Polski takes us on a journey full of humour, but also serious reflection to the Wonderland of internet chatrooms as seen by a modern day teenager, Alice. The festival map also includes locations, which normally belong to groups with a well-grounded position in the alternative-theatre world who concede their space to give other theatres a chance to perform. The Resident Theatre Centre or Scena Robocza is such a location. It gives space to theatrical groups that don’t have permanent stages. It is an initiative which has been associated with Teatr Strefa Ciszy for twenty years. In 2014 we had two plays which were an effect of such a theatrical residence: Tales of moss and lichen by Leszek Bzdyl and Jan Kochanowski and the premiere Antiwestern directed by Ewa Kaczmarek. Strefa Ciszy is well known to the Malta audience, as they have been performing on the festival for many years.

Several performances were presented by groups associated with Republika Sztuki Tłusta Langusta. Teatr Usta Usta Republika, founded in 2000, has performed on Malta many times and this time they offered two plays: the open air play entitled Cycle and the Feast, the theme of which was the constant objectification to which the human being is subject in a world ruled by consumption. Katarzyna Pawłowska from Teatr Porywacze Ciał performed her monodrama OUN, Radykalna Frakcja Medialna Mazut presented X.humation. While the Polish-German duo Kuzka premiered their Notes from a Journey, the form of which combined a performing lecture, a monodrama and a radio program, which was inspired by Andriej Tarkowski’s Stalker.

Dance Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker The Belgian choreographer and dancer, Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, came to Poznań upon Malta 2014 invitation, after twenty years of absence. Her influence on the development of dance, her uncommon charisma, the force of artistic language which she uses, as well as the atmosphere of focus, contemplation and awe which she conjures up in the audience, all amount to a position which could only be compared the one enjoyed by Pina Bausch in the world of contemporary dance. Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker was the choreographer at the famous Brussels opera La Monnaie, she presented her work all over the world, she cooperates with renowned artists such as: Peter Greenaway, Jérôme Bel or Boris Charmatz. She received many prestigious prizes, including. Bessie Award (1988), London Dance and Performances Award (1989), and American Dance Festival Award (2011) granted for lifetime achievement. Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s work is focused on the relation between movement and music. The choreographer builds her performances based on various musical sources – early music, contemporary instrumental music, jazz and pop. Her works have been described as “writing in time and space with the use of movement”. Malta Festival Poznań 2014 pre44

sented an opportunity to see two legendary performances: Fase (with which she debuted in 1982) and Drumming – both inspired by the music of Steve Reich and showing characteristic traits of her choreography: subjection to rhythm, mathematical precision of movement, and at the same time her touching stage presence full of expression and emotion. Apart from the performances themselves, we had a meeting with the artists, a screening of films which used her choreography (Rain, Achterland, Rosas danst Rosas) as well as the performances of dance etudes of the renowned P.A.R.T.S. school (The Performing Arts Research Centre), which was founded by Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker in 1995. The graduates of the four-year courses at that Brussels-based school make up subsequent generations of the European dance scene. Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker’s presence is another facet of Malta’s initiative to promote contemporary Flemish theatre and dance, which has been ongoing since 2010. Flemish performing arts have enduring influence on the European scene and remain universally renowned and original. Following the Flanders Idiom, Poznań was visited by: Jan Fabre, Needcompany, Meg Stuart and TG Stan.

Old Brewery New Dance

Thanks to our cooperation with Art Stations Foundation Malta’s dance program has been featuring the Old Brewery New Dance section, curated by Joanna Leśnierowska, for 10 years. She has been steadily developing the only centre of promotion for contemporary dance in Poland, which presents the most interesting dance-related developments in Europe and the world, but also stimulates the development of this branch of art in Poland. The Słodownia +3 studio at the Old Brewery became a centre for the development of choreography renowned all over Europe – a space for presentation, but primarily a space of creation. Over 50 contemporary dance productions have been created there, and in 2006 the first Polish residency program was brought to life – Solo Projekt. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of collaboration, we made Polish dance the main theme of the dance program. The artists of the “solo generation” took over the space of the Słodownia and set up a performative installation. They invited the audience to take part in morning classes workshops, during which they revealed the secrets of their own practice and encouraged discussions about individual approaches to dance and choreography. The Studio Słodownia +3 stage featured the most interesting dance productions created at the Old Brewery in the last several months. The program included: Skutki niezamierzone, 48

Music

Strong music program is the hallmark of Malta. It is the reason we have been dubbed “The most musical among theatre festivals and the most theatrical among music festivals”. Thanks to a successful combination of those two genres of art we attract a varied audience open to new aesthetics and we show that contemporary performing arts draw on music in various ways. Each edition of the Festival is accompanied by a concert, which invariably becomes one of the highlights of the summer concert season in Poland. Malta 2014 welcomed Damon Albarn – the leader and founder of such legendary bands as Blur and Gorillaz. As a member of various groups and a multiple Grammy and Brit Awards winner, he sold a total of over 30 million records. Albarn remains one of the most charismatic personalities in modern alternative music, and his Malta Festival concert only served as a confirmation. The concert took place on 29 June in the extraordinary space of Poznań’s Old Gas Works, the artist performed songs from his solo album Everyday Robots published in April 2014. It is the most personal album in Albarn’s carrier: childhood memories intertwine with a reflection about the contemporary, modernised world of computer games, mobile phones, life sprawling 52

between nature and technology. During the Poznań concert, which was attended by several thousand fans, Albarn and the band Heavy Seas, charmed the audience and they felt great on the stage. They performed 22 songs, which at that time was a record for this tour. Damon Albarn was supported by a band from Poznań, Rebeka, a recent discovery of the alternative scene. Rebeka delights critics and is loved by fans for their combination of minimalist, electronic sounds with ambitious melodious pop, emotional lyrics and the strong vocals of Iwona Skwarek.

Malta Generator

It was the second time Malta Festival Poznań launched Malta Generator, the local social and artistic project implemented in several locations in town and on Plac Wolności. Malta Generator prolongs the experience of the festival for Poznanians from several days to several months. It transports the festival from the buildings of theatres and other venues to open spaces, available for everyone. This project-process encourages people to be together in public space, to take a different look at our communal and private lives through artistic events, meetings, workshops, co-created by local artists and activists. Guerilla (Spanish for “rebel”) – the main theme of Malta Generator 2014, was inspired by Latin America and it referred to the essence of this phenomenon: dissent to the existing reality, which results in individual commitment. The program entailed several months of building local bonds through co-creation of community gardens and renovation of a neglected kiosk outside the city centre, as well as the three-week long activity on the city’s agora – Plac Wolności – during Malta Festival Poznań 2014.

In June the heart of Malta Generator beat on Plac Wolności. Normally an empty space, Plac Wolności transformed into a music and theatre stage, a space for workshops, debates, games and fun, with a restaurant, a bar and a place to relax. In collaboration with Poznań’s School of Form and the architects, Jola Starzak and Dawid Strębicki from Atelier Starzak-Strebicki, we built a micro-city of art and relaxation, which quickly became the most popular meeting place, a space to be together in Poznań. The Square was visited by thousands of people everyday, all wishing to take a rest from the urban noise. Each of the festival weeks had its main theme. During the first day we looked at alternative everyday lives, both private and public. During the second week children, as active and full-fledged members of the society, became the most important participants of the Generator. The third week followed the Idiom theme “Latin America: Mestizos” and it was about an encounter between the two worlds: Latin America and Poznań.

The first week began with activities, which were both commonplace and important: constructing a home, a space on Plac Wolności, where people would feel good and which would be eco-friendly. The space comprised of many solutions and products unavailable on the open market. As a challenge to the mundanity of everyday life, we discovered hidden parts of the town, watched plant life in the city, weaved a table together and had a public yoga class. The Helium Balloonscycle designed by Maciej Frąckowiak was an important element of the part of the program focused on urban everyday life. Each of the actions designed by him was a clear and direct communication of our presence in the city. It also stirred curiosity, it was an enticement to get actively involved in the creation of our common space. Basing on the premise that the public character of sport activities is a reflection of the strength of the social movement, Plac Wolności was also stirred up by sports: zumba classes, yoga, boules, or badminton.

In view of examining how the youngest citizens feel in town and how they benefit from it, we prepared several events for children. Most of them took place in the second week of Malta Festival Poznań, as a part of the “Children at Liberty” cycle, the mastermind behind which was Maja Brzozowska-Brywczyńska. Thanks to that we could discover what enormous social sensitivity children have. It drew our attention to matters which are usually omitted by grownups. The installations on Plac Wolności were not burdened by boredom and distant history, but bore the marks of things close to children, their everyday life. Thanks to experienced animators our smallest festivalgoers could become architects and designers of their own games and the space where they live everyday.

The third week was focused on the Idiom “Latin America: Mestizos”. Festivalgoers could walk around a huge map of Latin America and read information placed on it about social and demographic similarities and differences between countries of that region and Poland or Europe. They could also take a closer look, through the medium of plays and films, at the relationship people have to their work in the context of analogies between Poland and Latin America, for example the effects of political system transformation. To familiarise Poznanians further with everyday life in Latin America, the festival restaurant served mainly dishes from that region’s local cuisine.

Malta Generator Locally In 2014 the activity of Malta Generator beyond Plac Wolności focused in three parts of the city – in communal gardens in Wilda and Łazarz and the szm21 workshop in Jeżyce. These spaces have been the platform for meeting with the local community since 2013. This long term process is not only about breathing life into abandoned locations, but primarily about creating relationships between people. Each of these places has a different character to which we adjusted individual social and artistic programs. The initiatives in the different parts of the city commenced at the beginning of March and lasted until September, when summer season was concluded.

In Wilda Garden Malta Generator is strongly supported by the inhabitants of local tenement houses as well as the Stowarzyszenie Kasztelania Ostrowska, Rada Osiedla Wilda, School of Form students and Stowarzyszenie Wildzianie which associates local activists. We started by cleaning the area up, digging the soil, sowing the grass. Later we conducted workshops during which we drew up plans for the following weeks, but primarily we worked out a Mediterranean vision for the garden. We also created a kids’ corner with a playhouse and a slide, which were built during workshops with the children themselves. We also planted a communal patch of herbs. During Malta Festival Poznań Wilda Garden hosted a concert by Laura Palmer Cover Story, an Anais Fleur performance and many creative workshops for local children and teenagers.

In Łazarz Garden we also cooperate with the inhabitants, Stowarzyszenie Kasztelania Ostrowska and School of Form, as well as local organisations: Szczep Łazarz, Komitywa, Centrum Inicjatyw Młodzieżowych „Horyzonty”, Galeria Raczej, Kolektyw Kąpielisko, and first and foremost, Klub Osiedlowy „ Krąg”. During the workshops conducted by the Komitywa group from Łazarz, the inhabitants planned together the kinds of activities they would like to see in the garden itself as well as the surrounding social and artistic events. Events which took place included wood sculpture workshops, urbanist workshops for children, a Jewish dance evening or a kamishibai performance, while the Hałas family concert got the whole neighbourhood dancing. In June 2014, to celebrate the 25 years of Independent Poland, the garden held a debate and a screening of films by Krzysztof Kieślowski and Wojciech Marczewski, which was attended mostly by teenagers and local activists – former underground activists.

Malta Generator also started a partnership with workshop szm21/, which has been founded in 2013 in one of the poorest tenement houses in the quarter. The founders – Agnieszka Chlebowska and Robert Ogurkis – started cooperate with children, inhabitants, in order to dispel the myths about the building at ul. Szamarzewskiego 21. Malta Generator also collaborated in the renovation and animation of the kiosk on the corner of Jackowskiego and Wawrzyniaka. It became a cafe for one day, as well as a place for concerts, debates and meetings. Thanks to the commitment of inhabitants and activists the place is also open in summer.

Malta Generator 1st International Meeting of Community Garden Creators Our rich experiences with local community gardens, as well as the constant challenges we face inspired us to organise a meeting with the creators of community gardens and urban activists from Poland and other European countries, which we called the 1st international Meeting of Community Garden Creators. Community gardens are becoming an increasingly common strategy for social activity, that is why we decided to look at this phenomenon in more detail together.Â

Malta for children

Our youngest festivalgoers are especially important to us. During our Sunday meetings with children’s theatre we got the chance to see plays created both by grownups (Explorers and On the ark at Eight by Fuzja Teatr), and children (Adventures of Momo by Teatr Pimpel 2 from the SOKÓŁ Municipal Culture Centre in Czerwonak, Dragons by Grupa Bez Nazwy from Owińska Primary School). Malta Generator also was the location of a happening prepared as a part of the international youth exchange program called “Młoda Malta”. Therefore, the cycle was devised not only as a way to spend free time, but also as a summer school for our youngest adepts of performing arts.

Malta in Wielkopolska

As every year Malta Festival Poznań was present not only in Poznań, but also in other towns of Wielkopolska, and brought the live theatre experience to audiences all over the region. Malta 2014 program in Konin included plays for children (Teatr Fuzja, Explorers) as well as grownups (Klancyk, TransKlancyk, or improvised theatre on Malta as well as Scena Robocza / Bzdyl&Kochanowski, Tales of moss and lichen), concerts (artists from Actitud María Marta with their first time performance in Poland and the Poznań band ShaKoFraKo with a Silent Disco concert). At the beginning of July, the audience of Luboń could enjoy a play based on Julio Cortazar’s short stories Rayuela performed by Agata Bronisz, Eva Rufo, Justyna Suliba and Bernadette Szwarc as well as a monodrama by Janusz Stolarski entitled the Gravedigger of kings.

The 300 events of Malta Festival Poznań 2014 were attended by 75 000 people. The audience comprised of people of various ages, and social economic backgrounds, as well as various expectations from a cultural event such as a festival. One of the values most important to Malta is its relationship with the city, that is why we try to integrate the inhabitants around artistic projects, organise them in attractive, easily accessible places, make events free of charge, and schedule the performances with consideration to the needs of families, students and the elderly.

The festival events and the discussion around Golgota Picnic gave rise to a lot of media interest. We’ve noted over 4.5 thousand media appearances, i.e. 60% more than in 2013. The events were covered by: 23 TV stations, 38 radio stations as well as 100 written press titles and 350 internet portals. The festival accredited 180 journalists and photojournalists from Poland and several other European countries. In connection with over 30 screenings and readings of Golgota Picnic all over Poland, the debate was also actively joined by local media. The events were also reported and commented on by foreign media including the French dailies “Le Monde”, “Libération”, “L’Humanité”, as well as Radio France, 84

The daily “Gazeta Wyborcza” was particularly active in reporting and commenting on the matters surrounding the festival that year. In the first six months of 2014, topics related to Malta appeared on the front page of the Wielkopolska edition of “Gazeta Wyborcza” 12 times and 4 times on the front page of the national edition. Moreover, in an unprecedented gesture “Gazeta Wyborcza” published the whole text of the play Golgota Picnic in its weekend edition of 28–29 July 2014 (circulation 286 thousand). Information about the text also appeared on the front page of the daily. This way each reader could work out their own opinion about the play. Never before in the history of independent Poland had a newspaper published the full text of anybody’s drama; never before had the scale of impact of one play been so significant.

For several years now Festival Malta has been paying particular attention to the accessibility of the events proposed in its program for the physically disabled. The facilities of Malta Generator and the Old Gas Works, the venue the final concert, have been designed so that they do not impair the movements of people on wheelchairs. We also take care that the festival program has events for people of various ages (including very small children, families and seniors) and that the space for the events is friendly and entices everyone to take part.

Communication activity of Malta Festival Poznań 2014 began already on 25 of September 2013 with a press conference in Poznań, during which the main theme of the 24th edition of the festival – Latin America – was announced, and its curator – Rodrigo García – was introduced. Further information was given for public knowledge regularly until mid May 2014 when we had to press conferences – in Warsaw and Poznań – on which we announced the program in full. Both conferences were attended by Rodrigo García, and the May conferences were also attended by the minister of culture and national heritage Bogdan Zdrojewski, the mayor of Poznań Ryszard Grobelny, the deputy mayor vof Poznań for culture Dariusz Jaworski and other representatives of the city government, Wielkopolskie Voivodship Local Administration, sponsors and the Malta Foundation Council. Our cooperation with TVN and the Festival sponsor, Enea, resulted in the creation of a special Malta service on the TVN24 information portal, which includes 50 video materials with interviews and reports from events. The cooperation with media partners also had a great impact on the promotion of the Festival: Polish Radio 3, TVP and TVP Poznań, “Polityka”, “Gazeta Wyborcza”, Gazeta.pl, AMS, Empik and important 92

theatre publications – “Didaskalia” and “Teatr”. This year this group was also joined by the “Aktivist” magazine. In 2014 we organised a special Silent Disco, with Polish Radio 3 DJs: Agnieszka Obszańska, Agnieszka Szydłowska and Michał Nogaś. One of the main fields of promotional activity of the festival was the Internet and social media which are at the moment one of the main sources of information about cultural life. Wishing to meet the demands of its audience, Malta used its accounts on Facebook, YouTube or Vimeo to constantly inform about the program and its most interesting events, as well as posted photographs and videos. The portals were also used as a space to exchange opinions, impressions and take part in competitions directed at the Festival audience. The outdoor promotion of the festival involved CLP (citylight), CS9 (cityscroll) and bill posts. The festival centre situated on Plac Wolności had five big banners promoting Malta events, as well as printed posters with the theatre, film, workshop, and concert programs and well as festival and concert posters, and playbills.

The printed material of Malta Festival Poznań 2014 was the following: the program leaflet announcing the festival, the festival catalogue, as well as the program booklet. The visuals are an important facet of all promotional and PR activity. Since 2013 we have been cooperating with Huncwot graphics studio, which is one of the leading creative teams in the industry, who received many prestigious prizes. They cooperate both with the creative and cultural sectors. They prepare the visual identity of the Festival’s main theme, as well as the internet site, the logo, the motif and the colour scheme of subsequent festival editions.

Malta Festival Poznań is financed from many sources and it is an example of an effective functioning of a public-private partnership as well as an active stance in obtaining resources and grants – both from home and abroad. The most important institutional financial partners of the Festival are: the City of Poznań, Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, and Wielkopolskie Voivodship Local Administration. The festival also gets support from the National Centre of Culture. In 2014 Aquanaut was the strategic sponsor, and Enea was the sponsor. We also received various earmarked funding from institutions such as the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, the Government of Finland, the French Institute, the Book Institute. Cooperation with local partners played a massive role in the implementation of the Festival, they include: Stary Browar – Art Stations Foundation, Centrum Kultury Zamek, Centrum Sztuki Dziecka, School of Form, Wyższa Szkoła Nauk Humanistycznych i Dziennikarstwa and Concordia Design. We have been cooperating with the Institute of Sociology at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań for many years, the students of which conduct research on the festival audience.

They prepared additional facilities and attractions for the audience on Plac Wolności: mapping on the Arcadia building, silent disco with Enea, 3D graffiti, photo-booth, a table for playing the South-American game juego del sapo or the “Safe weekend with PZU” initiative.

Nostalgia is a low-key three day festival which presents music from various nations, cultures and traditions. During concerts, meetings with artists and film screenings we wanted the audience to take a closer look at two artists, who come from very distant parts of the world: Armenia and the United States. The autumnal aura of Poznań served as a good backdrop for an encounter of two different, fascinating, cultures, music genres and composing techniques: Tigran Mansurian and Elliott Carter.

Tigran Mansurian

When we think Armenia, music, nostalgia one figure immediately springs to mind – Tigran Mansurian. The first day of the festival focused on the works of this Armenian composer, who was just celebrating his 75th birthday and came to Poznań on our invitation for the second time. Nostalgia commenced with a meeting with Tigran Mansurian and Anja Lechner – one of the best cellists in the world. Maria Majewska talked to the guests about their relationship as a composer and performer. “We met in very unromantic circumstances: in the car driving to my concert”, said Anja. “We talked the whole way there. I didn’t know Mansurian’s works back then, but when I got back I immediately listened to several compositions. I was enchanted by the way he built sound images”. “We understand each other with Anja without words. She interprets my pieces with extreme sensitivity”, recounted Mansurian. Two years ago he wrote a composition for her entitled Quasi parlando, which can be translated as “almost speaking”. During the first concert of the festival: Mansurian / Carter. String the composer allowed the cello not only come close to the sound of a human voice, but also to substitute it. Mansurian rewrote the lyrics of four songs of the Armenian musician Komitas for the cello. The pieces had their world premiere at the Dominican church during the Festival, 106

when they were performed by the maestro himself and Anja Lechner. Although these two artists had been cooperating for years, it was only the second time they played together. That same night the audience also had the chance to hear pieces by Tigran Mansurian and the second of the festival’s composers – Elliott Carter alongside eachother. NeoQuartet, a young string quartet, who gathered some excellent reviews, performed two quartets of the two composers. The musical program, was supplemented by film screenings. The public could enjoy documentary material showing the composer in rehearsal with musicians, by the piano, during composing – lost deep in music and thought, as well as the cinematic masterpiece The Colour of Pomegranates by Siergiej Paradżanow, in which Mansurian’s music, with its folk instruments and choral singing, plays an important role.

Elliott Carter

The second day of the festival belonged to Elliott Carter – an American master of the musical avant-garde and one of the most recognised and most interesting composers of the last century, who passed away in 2012. The program was opened by a discussion about musical Avantgarde and its relations with the listeners, based on the example of Elliott Carter’s works between Antoni Beksiak, Agata Kwiecińska (Polish Radio 2 journalist, the editor-in-chief of Muzykoteka Szkolna), as well as dr hab. Krzysztof Moraczewski (Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań). The meeting could be summed up by the words of Moraczewski: “The whole work with Carter’s composer’s workshop was about creating a perfect musical piece, which should seem a coherent, convincing whole to be listened to be not analysed”. Carter’s compositions sound best when paired with New York landscapes, and this was the backdrop to the stories registered in the documentary Labyrinth of Time, directed by Frank Scheffer.

Grzybowski juxtaposed avant-garde pieces with ascetic sounds of Tigran Mansurian’s compositions which are inspired by Armenian music. The musician finished the concert in a nostalgic mood, thanks to a short piano piece entitled like the Festival itself. The second day of Nostalgia Festival was closed by the film Here directed by Braden King, presenting a meeting of two cultures, American and Armenian, through a love story. It is a combination of a road film, a melodrama and a comedy, telling a story of an American cartographer, who comes to Armenia where he meets a local photographer and together they travel the Armenian trails.

The portrait of the composer was further developed in the evening recital of Maciej Grzybowski Mansurian / Carter. Piano. The pianist, who was nominated for Paszport “Polityki”, played The Sonnata and Night Fantasies, which were real milestones in Carter’s artistic biography. ‘(…) this complicated mu110

In memoriam of the Armenians

The genocide of Armenians in 1915, which claimed the lives of between four hundred thousand to one million people, depending on various estimations (with a further five hundred thousand being forced to leave the country) was the main theme of the third day of the artistic program of the festival. The subject of the genocide, constantly erased from memory, was introduced by films. The documentary Screamers tells the story of the members of the American band System of a Down. The musicians, who have Armenian roots, use their strong lyrics and guitar riffs to demand that crimes like the genocide of Armenians never happen again. Mount Ararat is a mountain-symbol in whose shadow the tragedy of 1915 played out. It is also a title of a feature film presented to the festival audience, in which the main character is trying to make an epic film about the atrocities that happened century ago.

performed Tigran Mansurian’s Requiem for the first time in Poland. The composer is the son of two immigrants and Requiem carries the sound of remembrance and nostalgia of one of the most numerous diasporas in the world. Mansurian himself, who listened to all three of the concerts and took part in two meetings, ‘was clearly pleased with the Poznań interpretation of his work after the Saturday event’, reported Marek Zaradniak (“Głos Wielkopolski”). On that night l’Autunno Orchestra also performed a piece of music which those who know Elliott Carter’s work, might find surprising. It was Sound Fields, a musical experiment of the composer written when he was 99, as well as Tempo e tempi for soprano, oboe, clarinet and violin. These pieces ‘revealed a different, slightly calmer, more mysterious and extraordinarily magical side of the American composer’, wrote Dominika Gracz („Gazeta Wyborcza”) after the concert.

The films and the thematically related meeting with Tigran Mansurian, Adam Banaszak and Piotr Tkacz served as an introduction to the final concert of the festival Mansurian / Carter. Orchestra. Conversations about music

For the first time in history of Nostalgia Festival Poznań the artistic program was accompanied by music workshops, prepared in cooperation with Meakultura Foundation. Meetings for music aficionados served not only as an occasion for free discussion and confrontation of views, they also gave an opportunity to share impressions from festival events. The conversations were moderated by culture expert Krzysztof Moraczewski and musicologist Ewa Schreiber. The workshops also offered an opportunity to explain one’s opinions in detail and put them down in writing. The workshops resulted in comments published during the Festival, columns and a lengthy review published in the internet magazine meakultura.pl.

Promotion and comunication

Communication with the public takes place through traditional, social and Internet media, indoor campaigns, as well as events preceding and accompanying the Festival. We reach out to many groups of potential users of the festival, also those ‘excluded from culture’ . Thanks to that the Festival does not only fulfil an informative function, but also an educational and a social one. In 2014 the Festival was announced and reported on by: local TV stations (including TVP Poznań and WTK), radio stations (including Radio Merkury, Radio Zet Gold, Radio Emaus) and the press (“Głos Wielkopolski”, “IKS”); national TV stations (TVP2, TVP Polonia, TVP Regionalna), national radio stations (including Polish Radio 2, Polish Radio 3, TOK FM) as well as national press (“Gazeta Wyborcza”, “Metro”); as well as numerous magazines and weeklies including “Kaleidoscope” and “Przewodnik Katolicki” and Internet portals. Every year the festival is attended by journalists from outside of Poznań, such as Dorota Szwarcman, who is a critic from “Polityka” and an author of an influential blog. International projects result in publications in foreign media, such as influential portals: www.err.ee from Estiona and www.armenpress.am from Armenia, as well as www.operaworld.es with its world-wide 120

readership and TV programs, e.g reportage aired on channel one of Armenian public television. Thanks to the patronage of media outlets such as Polish Radio 2, “Gazeta Wyborcza”, TVP 2 and TVP Kultura, information about the Festival reaches recipients all over Poland. Polish Radio 2 produced Nostalgia concert recordings several times (in 2014 they registered the concert of Tigran Mansurian’s and Elliott Carter’s music performed by l’Autunno Chmber Orchestra and UAM Academic Choir conducted by Adam Banaszak), which were then aired on Polish Radio 2, which considerably increased the group of possible Nostalgia recipients. Every year, actions engaging the audience before the Festival constitute an important element of the event. In 2014 workshops in music criticism for students and meetings about the music industry played the role of such an activating element for the public. The workshops were conducted by specialists from departments of culture studies and musicology the Adam Mickiewicz University and the Academy of Music, associated with the Meakultura Foundation. The meeting about the music industry, which was organised in collaboration with the Estonian Centre for Music Development, Sonora agency and Prof Kevin Kleinmann, who is a Universal Music International advisor and a lecturer on the Sorbonne in Paris, was attended by over 60 managers from Poland, Estonia and other countries. The meeting was accompanied by two concerts of modern Estonian composers performed on traditional instruments. 122

Malta Festival Poznań has been a member of the House on Fire network since 2012. The aim of this five-year European project is to support artists, who through their art take a stance in a public debate about current social, economic and cultural issues. HoF is a platform stimulating the development of new aesthetics and artistic languages as well as a meeting of both the theoreticians and the practitioners of art: theatrical directors, choreographers, playwrights, visual artists, philosophers, scientists, critics and curators. Members of HoF include : LIFT (London), HAU (Berlin), Kaaitheater (Brussels ), BRuT (Vienna), Divadlo Archa (Prague), Teatro Maria Matos (Lisbon), Frascati (Amsterdam), Malta Festival (Poznań), Theatre Garonne (Touluse ), BIT (Bergen). Atelier for Young Festival Managers Atelier for Young Festival Managers is an initiative of the European Festivals Association – one of the oldest networks associating over 100 festivals from 42 countries of the world. From 20 to 27 October 2014 Malta Foundation played host to the 7th edition of the atelier. “The six previous editions of the Atelier strengthened our belief in the mission of the Festival Academy and highlighted the constant need to create a space for acquiring skills and exchanging experiences. The Poznan edition was a unique platform for obtaining new experiences and passing on knowledge to the next generation of festival organisers, while focusing on what’s most important: art and artists”, said Kathrin Deventer, the general secretary of EFA. The seven-day intensive program offered an opportunity to meet with managers from various generations who deal with the artistic aspects of festival management. The Poznań edition was attended by 41 chosen young adepts from 23 countries of the world (including Great Britain, Spain, Malta, Bulgaria, USA, Canada, Zimbabwe, Israel, Palestine, Jordan, South Korea, Singapore ). The program was prepared by 7 renowned artistic directors of various festivals: Hugo De Greef 128

(former General Secretary of EFA, General Director of Bruges – European Capital of Culure 2002 as well as the founder and director of the Belgian Kaaitheater), Robyn Archer (the artistic director of the The Light in Winter festival in Melbourne, co-chair of the Australian Council for the Arts and a strategic advisor to Gold Coast Arts and Culture Queensland), Mark Ball (artistic director of the London International Festival of Theatre), Nele Hertling (vice-president of Academy of Arts in Berlin), Michał Merczyński (director of Malta Festival Poznań and Nostalgia Festival Poznań), Annemie Vanackere (general and artistic director of Hebbel am Ufer in Berlin and the artistic director of Rotterdamse Schouwburg). Participants took part in lectures, discussions and workshops focused on artistic aspects of festival management. One of the key elements of the Atelier were study visits in important art and culture centres in Poznań and Wielkopolska. “We were very happy to host the Atelier. Poznań is an ideal place for a creative exchange of ideas and experiences between new generations of young representatives of artistic professions”, said Michał Merczyński, the director of Malta Festival Poznań.

Since 2010 Malta Foundation has been developing its publishing activity, which includes two series: one devoted to the most prominent representatives of modern performing arts published in collaboration with Ha!art publishing house (Jan Fabre, Christoph Schlingensief, Stefan Kaegi and Rimini Protokoll, Romeo Castellucci, and Rodrigo García), and the other is a cycle of publications summarising the Forum, which is a space for discussion of the most important issues regarding the Idiom, i.e. the main theme of the Festival. The books published by the Festival also include titles connected with special events: 20th edition of the Festival, Lech Raczak’s anniversary or the world premiere of the opera Slow Man by Nicholas Lens with the libretto by J.M. Coetzee which took place on Malta Festival Poznań 2012. In 2014 and following Malta’s initiative, the book García. The remains of the world, which was an introduction into the theatre works and writings of this artist.
