Dear Readers

Birthdays! Love ‘em or hate them…..? I know the jury’s out for many of us as we tick off another year notched up on the calendar but I have to say, I’ve always seen birthdays as an opportunity to celebrate and throw a party. What’s age afterall? It’s just a number! So, having organized everyone else’s celebrations in the family in the last couple of months I’m delighted to say that I already have my mid-summer birthday party planned – and have even sourced, although not quite purchased, what I would like to be opening on the day!! Have I told you before that I share my birthday with not only my best friend from, Glasgow who I used to work with (that was always a pretty good celebration in our department!) but also my father in law in Ireland? What are the chances of that! George Michael and Ricky Gervais too and I can actually remember what I was doing the year it was the turn of actress Sheridan Smith to be born – of dear, that makes me feel absolutely ancient. As Spring starts to merge its way into summer, I think we’ve all been enjoying the bursts of really lovely weather lately – no more so than on the day of our annual school May Fair last weekend (16 May). For once, we were delighted that the weather forecasters had got it so wrong and by mid-morning it was absolutely gorgeous and baking hot. Who’d have thought to smoother themselves in sun tan lotion before heading off to the fair (and it therefore wasn’t surprising how many pink faces we saw around New Malden on Sunday!) And whilst planning the weather was out of our hands….it’s not rocket science to work out that when the temperatures soar, so too do the sales of ice creams and Pimms! What a great day it was –raising lots of money for our school through the PTA but also a real pleasure to be opening our doors to many other members of the local community who came along to our first ever ‘Dog Show’ and then later on, to listen to bands and local musicians for the “festival” part of our day. I really hope that those of you with fairs taking place during June are as lucky with the weather and that you also raise loads of funds for your schools and local groups. Look forward to catching up with you all next month. when we’ll be gearing up for Malden Fortnight 2015!!

New Malden History Saving for a good cause (part 1) by Robin Gill

During the course of the Second World War, the government instigated a number of events to encourage the public to invest in National War Savings which in turn would help fund the war effort. The first of these was called “War Weapons Week” in 1941. Cash could be paid into the local Post Office or bank and converted into Bonds or Certificates which would help the authorities purchase much needed equipment for the troops. Sometimes these could be items with which the public could easily identify like a Spitfire. A target would be set for the whole town and events would be organised for the week to act as incentives. War weapons week New Malden decided to combine their efforts with the neighbouring boroughs of Kingston and Surbiton. The Lord Chancellor Lord Simon announced the scheme on the steps of the Guildhall in Kingston stating that “Your loan is safe to the end of time”. Their target was £350,000 the cost of a destroyer but as the saying of the time went “Two would be better, three would be fine.” The public were told they were becoming

investors or shareholders in The British Empire. Every road had a savings group (an idea that originated in Old Malden and spread throughout the country) that the public were encouraged to join. Businesses, schools, and clubs also had groups The borough had a packed programme which covered the last week of January. Starting with the opening ceremony at the council offices, including an inspection of the guard of honour (Home Guard and Auxiliary Fire Service {AFS] by the Mayor Alderman Wagner and the local MP Admiral Sir Percy Royds. This was followed on the Sunday by a Civic Church Parade beginning in South Lane and ending at Christ Church via Malden Road, where the service was led by the Rev Arthur Habershon. The Mayor was in attendance again, together with members of the corporation, Home Guard, whose drum and bugle band led the procession, along with machine and Bren guns. Lorries, ambulances, and a hundred ARP wardens and messengers on bicycles took part alongside rescue squads and casualty services, with members of the Red Cross and the St John Ambulance Brigade. Tuesday morning saw the Band of the East Surrey Regiment playing outside the Council Offices. On Wednesday, the Mayor toured the borough’s school addressing

speaker, and the library held an exhibition of war relics, photographs and cine films. The Mayor also agreed to give a savings certificate to any baby born during the week.

the children about the benefits of savings, asking them to write an essay on what they were doing for War Weapons Week; also the “Cinema Van” showed topical films in the playground. During the week there were whist drives to raise funds. Friday lunch time would see a further parade through the streets by the military including a tank which started in Blagdon Road. There would also be an exhibition of a captured Messerschmitt on Plough Green. The week would finish with the Cinema Van and Loud Speaker Car touring the area, rounding off with a “Concert of Local Talent” at the Institute (St John’s Church Hall) organised by Coun E.W. Jones. Throughout the week there would be special films at the Odeon with a local

By the Friday, the three boroughs had raised £510,000 from a total population of 130,000 and it was decided that the post offices in the area would stay open until 6.30pm on the Saturday so that savings stamps and certificates could be bought, resulting in long queues. By the end of the week £687,415 had been realised, bearing in mind the boroughs had had only three weeks notice of the event. Typical of the generosity of the public from Malden, was an elderly lady who paid in £50 but refused to take any certificates, and would not give a name or address, wanting the money to “go towards winning the war.” There was also a letter from a boy aged ten enclosing £1 10s 4d (£1.52 pence) which he raised giving cinema shows in his Dad’s garage. Warship week The following year (1942) the savings scheme was entitled “Warship Week”. Malden who this time had decided to go it alone, had a target of £70,000 (cost of a motor torpedo boat) and as this was a “Naval Campaign” the appeal commenced on 7th March with a naval exhibition at the library, opened by

the Mayor Alderman Wagner accompanied by Commander Norman Holbrook VC who lived at Four Acres (opposite Marymount in George Road Coombe). Commander Holbrook had won his Victoria Cross in 1914 whilst in command of a submarine in the Dardanelles. Adults and supervised children were able to manipulate guns from a bomber and a gun turret. Naval personnel explained the operation of depth charges, and how to don diving gear. The Met Police Band played outside the council offices, before the local MP officially opened the week with the Home Guard providing a guard of honour. A three mile race between the Belgrave Harriers, Home Guard, and Police then took place starting and finishing at the offices. Another march involving 800 troops and vehicles then started from Cambridge Avenue and proceeded to the Council Offices by a route involving Woodside Road, Clarence Avenue, Dickerage Lane, Kingston Road, Westbury Road, Nelson Road, South Lane, Sheephouse Way, and Malden Road, where they would be welcomed by the Free French Band. There was a ball held at the Worcester on the Wednesday attended by the Mayor and Mayoress and over 200 guests, music was provided by the Skyrockets RAF Band. Another dance organised by the Home Guard was held at Courtlands on Friday, again attended by the Mayor and Mayoress with music by Len Shaw and his band. Various competitions were held on the site of the Plaza Cinema which had been burnt down on 27th December 1936 (now McDonalds). One idea was a painting of a motor torpedo boat which had to be covered with six penny pieces, this and other events organised by the ARP proved to be a great success, along with various whist drives. Entry to some of these events did not even require money. A dance held by the fire service at the Columbia Recreation Ground (Manor Park) cost 7lbs

8

of waste paper to gain admittance. This was then used for salvage. Then there was a stirrup pump competition organised by the fire dept won by residents of King Henry’s Road. A stirrup pump was a necessity in all areas after a fire and possible damage to water mains. By the end of the week £312,000 had been raised enough for four MTBs. This was announced by loud speaker to a large crowd assembled outside the council offices, and followed by a general salute and fanfare played by three members of the Home Guard. These men had played a fanfare every evening when the day’s total was placed on the indicator board outside the entrance. Wings for victory week In 1943 the appeal was entitled Wings For Victory Week and Malden’s target was £200,000 the cost of five Halifax bombers. This was the type of aeroplane Cyril Barton VC was flying in March 1944 in the action when he won his Victoria Cross, and which ultimately cost him his life. An exhibition about the RAF was held at the library, opened by Sir Frederick Handley Page whose company manufactured the bombers. He was joined at the council offices by the Mayor and the local MP who witnessed a procession of eight bands and detachments from the services. Of great interest to the children, was the collection of bombs on view at the site of the Plaza. This event was carefully supervised by the wardens of the ARP. Other events on that Saturday (June 12th) was a cricket match between the Civil Defence Services and Pearl Assurance, a dance at the village hall in Kingston Vale, and sports and a cycling gymkhana organised by the National Fire Service at the Columbia Sports Ground. The band of the Horse Guards entertained crowds on Malden Green followed by the Odds and Ends concert party in the evening. The Monday saw a dog show on Malden Green followed by boxing in the afternoon, with a talent show open to all comers in the evening. On Tuesday, the Green was occupied by the band of The Duke of Wellington’s Regiment who gave a concert. Wednesday opened with a baby show on Plough Green with a hundred entries. The winner was 14 months old Peter Withey (he will be drawing his pension now!). This was followed by fancy dress competitions, games, and a talent show all for children judged by Capt Derek McCulloch (Uncle Mac). The final Saturday saw an exhibition of baseball at London University (now Fulham FC) between two

teams from the United States Air Force. The rules of the game were given out in an on running commentary. The evening saw a dance at Courtlands with music provided by Oscar Rabin and enjoyed by over 200 people. A lemon was put up for auction and raised over £2. As the total figure realised at the end of the week was £230,500, it was possible that Malden and Coombe could fund nearly six Halifax Bombers. So over a three year period the Borough raised over £770,000 enough for four Motor Torpedo Boats Five Halifax Bombers, and the greater part of a Destroyer. Not bad for a town with a population of about 40,000, with a large percentage away involved in the war effort.

ClariVein® is a ut walk in walk o wing procedure allo to you to return ies regular activit the next day.

Get your legs ready for summer - ClariVein® Many people suffer from varicose veins at some point in their life which can cause significant pain and discomfort. A revolutionary procedure ClariVein®, available at only a handful of hospitals in the UK has been developed to treat varicose veins, more quickly and simply than previous traditional procedures. This pioneering treatment allows you to return to regular activities the very next day and is now available at Spire St. Anthony’s Hospital.

Please remember to mention the Village Voice when you speak to our advertisers

Varicose veins are caused by a backflow of blood in the superficial veins near to the skin. This is due to the valves in the vein becoming weakened or damaged over time. Blood collects in the affected vein, causing it to become engorged or twisted in appearance. Once the vein is damaged, it does not tend to recover without treatment and will usually get worse over time. Symptoms Symptoms of varicose veins will differ between individuals but can include: • Blue or purple discolourations under the skin • Aching or discomfort in the legs • Swelling of the ankles • Itchiness of the legs Treatment - Clarivein® Treatment of vein problems has seen significant advances throughout the past decade, and it can be difficult to keep up with modern developments. It is therefore crucial to visit a hospital where the latest medical innovations are available via world class consultants and state-of-theart equipment.

We are now offering ClariVein®, a newly available, minimally-invasive treatment. Unlike traditional vein stripping, ClariVein® can be performed using a local anaesthetic. A rotating catheter is inserted into the affected vein(s) which releases a drug to seal the vein from within. The vein will then dissolve over a period of approximately six weeks. You will be advised to wear a compression stocking for one week following treatment, and can return to regular activities (including driving) immediately after the procedure. Prof Loftus specialises in the treatment of varicose veins and holds regular clinics at Spire St Anthony’s on alternate Tuesday afternoons. If you would like to book an appointment please call us on: 020 8335 4678.

Clubs It’s not just cricket... Unavailability. It’s a 14-letter word, but one that can make a cricket captain – especially in the lower environs of a club – emit a string of four-letter ones probably best left out here. The Saturday game is already challenged on many fronts by the frantic pace of modern life; youngsters without access to satellite television would probably struggle to a put a name to the faces of most of the current England team, although plenty in KT3 might well have heard of KP. Eight hours of weekend cricket is as much an enemy of ‘quality time with the family’/DIY as the pram in the hall is the sombre enemy of good art, as Cyril Connolly had it. Connolly, the literary critic who chronicled his own lengthy efforts to write a good book in Enemies of Promise – would undoubtedly sympathise with the plight down at Malden Wanderers. Talented cricketers we have in abundance – England’s most-capped Test player Alec Stewart (133 caps, trivia fans) cut his teeth on the green, green grass of Cambridge Avenue – but the pressures of work during the

week understandably mean a noon start at Oxted and Limpsfield doesn’t top the list of everyone’s weekend priorities (not even for those in Oxted and Limpsfield). That said, with the first month of the season nearly done, we’ve managed to put out four Saturday sides for every game thus far – not something that can be said of all the county’s club sides. The signs have been generally encouraging, too. Off the pitch the club has been buoyed by the return of some familiar old faces to help out with the look and feel of the ground – breathtakingly bucolic (if you’ve never seen it, you really should come and have a look – it’s a picture), while on it, four new skippers have imbued their respective troops with fresh energy and ideas. Better yet is our burgeoning colts section – arguably the best indicator of any club’s pulse for the decade ahead – the place is alive with scampering kids on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from as young as four to 15. We have some very impressive young talent coming through. Perhaps some of the current prams in the halls of KT3 hold the future Alec Stewart. We live in hope. Events V.E. Sunday by Margaret Picot

A few weeks of panic preceded the great day, especially when it came to communication on-line! Weather beautifully springlike, couldn’t have been better. My daughter, Caroline, accompanied me (“carer/chaperone” they said. I said she was a “guest” - I didn’t need caring for, yet!). We’d taken a taxi to New Malden station and another from Waterloo: why not make it special? It’s true, we had quite a way to walk, and - as can be imagined - security was very strict. (By the way, Central Hall let us use their loos!) In the Abbey, I was asked where we’d like to sit, and I said “Must be opposite the band, please” (Welsh Guards). The Queen, the Duke and their sons were there - surprisingly, without the Duchesses. There were many politicians, just finished or just starting. At one point, reading the extensive programme, I whispered to Caroline “I think the Queen must be ill ‘cos she’s not here...”. “You had your head down in the hymns and missed her!” Panic over. It was unusual to see Her Majesty in unfamiliar dark clothing.

Several young people did readings - which was quite touching - including Zoe Churchill, who gave a suitably strong, clear interpretation. A wonderful Marine band led the parade outside the Abbey, followed by a pipe band. I was amazed - and gratified - to see so many people had turned out to see us: clapping, waving, cheering, many holding Union Flags (half of which were the wrong way up!). I waved throughout the whole walk to St. James’s Park, even

eliciting a cheer at one point (much to Caroline’s embarrassment), and thanked everyone on duty who was within earshot - even the Guards at strict attention. It was a really wonderful experience. The three other ex-Wrens from my Kingston Branch, plus one daughter, were soon lost to us in the crowds - not to be seen again that day. In Horseguards, Prince Charles and the Duchess stood on a small podium - completely isolated - smiling. Nobody seemed to think of bowing or curtseying; We passed the Duchess first -, I smiled and said “Hello” ... didn’t seem to take much notice of Charles in my excitement; but Caroline told me later that he’d put out his hand to shake mine but I was looking away (off to the Tower with her!). Three journalists cornered Caroline and me - one was from the Legion and one from a Chinese publication. We all tottered into the large marquee, blue-carpeted, decorated with “VE” pennants; with round tables covered with white cloths, each for eight; and at our leisure we collected small picnic “hampers” - sturdy, covered with faux wickerwork and decorative braid and handles. These contained a splendid selection of foods: choice of sandwich, pork pie, frittata, mixed salad, lemon cake, fruit and cream trifle; together

Layout 1.indd 1

with a bottle of water, refresher pad, knife and fork, large, sturdy table napkin. Soft drinks and wine, tea and coffee were available. To top it all, each hamper contained a commemorative medal. All in all, a good show. (Incidentally, there were some extremely good ‘loos’!) Many stories were exchanged. The day was, of course, all devised by the wonderful British Legion. Incidentally, generous travelling expenses are to be given. At about 4 p.m everyone was ready to leave. I had reminded Caroline - as if it was necessary - that I, a born Londoner, have no sense of direction; and that the return journey was likely to be fraught! And so it was - simply getting to some public transport was stressful. We asked nearly every police officer we could see (and I’d never seen so many on duty), to which we received assorted answers: Of course, many would’ve been drafted in from afar - and I know from my experience in the Met. that it can be difficult! But we made it to Westminster underground eventually, jostling with the hordes. The daughter had a card of some sort, and I, the wonderful Freedom Pass. Although I did, once again, mess things up because on the bus from New Malden station I told her what the fare would be, forgetting that cash is not accepted now! Unfortunately, we happened to have one of the few miseries driving the bus - and I forget how she managed in the end. To be honest, I was fairly exhausted - I think we both were. But what a wonderful day it had been..... I said to some old chaps “See you again in ten years”! I hope Caroline thinks it was worth her travelling from Chester by public transport, for it: She seemed to enjoy it too.

Community by Bobby Child

Sometimes a “Good Idea” is so good that it runs and runs. Twenty five years ago, Kingston Rotarian, Peter Jarvis had a Good Idea, one that he immediately shared with his friend and fellow Rotarian, Graham Child (my husband and long time resident of New Malden), and which they then put into effect with huge effort and enthusiasm, from themselves, from another Kingston Rotarian John Saxton, and then the rest of Kingston Rotary Club; not forgetting support from the Rotary Clubs of Surbiton and New Malden, Leatherhead – and Kingston Rotaract Club. The Good Idea was a simple one – to give a great day out to disabled and disadvantaged children in Kingston. So on the second Wednesday of June 1990, a cavalcade of cars decorated with ribbons and balloons set off for Thorpe Park and those lucky children had a fantastic time. A film was made of the event and this was sent to all the Rotary Clubs in Great Britain & Ireland so they

could see what a Good Idea it had been. Kingston and the other local Rotary Clubs continued each year, and are still continuing, but now hundreds of other Rotary Clubs are doing the same – always on the second Wednesday in June – and over 25,000 children up and down the country now enjoy a great day out every year. More than 10,000 Rotarian volunteers make this possible, raising the funds to enable it to happen as well has helping on the day itself. And there’s more! In 1999 a new charity was set up “KidsOut” which has under its umbrella the June Day Out and which itself organises Fun Days and Toy Boxes for children in Refuges, sensory equipment for severely disabled children and “World Stories” for children in their own languages as well as in English. So this Good Idea is celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year, and the Day Out AND the Charity seem surely set for another 25 years, and more. And it started here in our Royal Borough! Congratulations to everyone concerned!!

View from the City

by Justin Urquhart Stewart

The Battle for the Three Unions It may sound like something out of a Tolkien story but the Prime Minister is now, as a result of his dramatic election victory last week, very likely to be facing some key battles but on three different fronts. The first Union which will be getting a lot of attention over the next few months, is that of the European Union and the promised referendum which may be heading towards us earlier than previously expected. This over recent years has been casting a long shadow over the future of the UK economy as potential overseas investors have held back on decisions to invest within the UK on the basis that “in a couple of years you could be outside the tariff wall”. Now of course there are many arguments to and fro about what the UK economy might look like outside the Union, but that really isn’t the issue for many such overseas companies. They see the largest trading block in the world and therefore don’t want to take the risk of finding themselves outside it. As far as they are concerned they see no reason why they should take any further investment risk, so the longer we wait and the longer we dither, the more reasons we give for others to go elsewhere. It is not so much whether your view is pro or anti, but rather the need to just finally make up our minds! So a referendum is likely to be sooner rather than later, but of course that will depend upon any deal that the Prime Minister can get with our EU partners. This then directly leads us to the second Union battle, and that of course is the battle for the Union of the Conservative party. From a small cabal of Mr Major’s now often quoted “bastards” back in 1993, it is understood that the fervent anti EU members have grown quite significantly in numbers. Although a couple crossed the floor over to UKIP, only one, Douglas Carswell, survived the election, with Mr Reckless no doubt regretting his somewhat “reckless” decision to have jumped ship too early. Now however the anti-European Conservative MPs will be sharpening their teeth as they will no doubt have realised their potential power with such a modest Commons majority. From some with reasoned views, to others described as “swivel eyed loons”, they have the opportunity to make the Prime Minister’s euphoria dissipate all too quickly into a repeat of the horrors that the Major administration suffered - even though he had a larger majority. These members are in effect UKIP-Lite, and may mean that Mr Cameron may have to rely upon others for any more pro-European stance if any vote is to be won in the House regarding anything to do with the EU. Some have compared this potential split in the Tories to the actual schism that occurred under Sir Robert Peel and the repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846. As a conservative Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel was only able to achieve the repeal with the support of the opposition Whigs in Parliament, but in

the process had to overcome the opposition of most of his own party - resulting in it being riven for some years. Many critics said he was a traitor to the Tory cause, or “a Liberal wolf in sheep’s clothing” because his final position reflected more “liberal” ideas. Is Mr. Cameron the new Sir Robert Peel?

Then we come to the battle for the third Union, and that of course is the Union of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The virtual annihilation of the opposition parties north of the Border was an astonishing result. However with a “plaid wash” across the nation, this is going to create a high level of expectations amongst the enthused voters. Populism is a dangerous partner as this year’s adored idol can easily become next year’s false god. Now Ms. Sturgeon has another election to win in 2016, and no doubt she would like to carry the wave of nationalism into that vote as well. However as true devolution starts to ensure that with financial expenditure comes financial responsibility, as tax raising powers mean that the voters will realise that the tax is being ordered, raised and levied by Holyrood and no longer by Westminster. The current situation means though that for the moment the Nationalists rule the roost north of the border, and thus it is for the Prime Minister to tread carefully to ensure that the Union is not to be lost. At some stage there will be another referendum, but hopefully by then the realism that falling oil values and falling carbon fuel production is making a fully independent Scottish nation, although still a viable state, a financially far weaker one than as part of the Union. It is to be hoped that time can take the emotion out of such a sensitive issue and ensure that economic value and logic overcomes misplaced populist pride - a clearly different stance from the pride of a nation with a great history and a great future. Behind all of this though we should also remember that David Cameron has previously announced that this was going to be his final term as Prime Minister. The effect of this won’t necessarily be immediate but rather as the weeks pass his influence as leader will ebb away as future power masters in the party start to vie for support in the upcoming leadership campaign. This will mean that he will increasingly become a lame duck leader with even less control over any of the “revolting” members of his party. It reminds me of a line from the musical Evita - “dice are rolling, knives are out, would-be presidents are all about”. This won’t be a pretty sight especially as the Tories don’t have a good reputation for such changes - there will be much bickering and bitching in the Junior Common Room. Justin Urquhart Stewart is one of the most recognisable and trusted market commentators on television, radio and in the press. Originally trained as a lawyer he has observed the retail market industry for 20 years whilst at Barclays Stockbrokers and developed a unique understanding of the market’s roles and benefits for the private investor

Malden Care Scheme Malden Care Scheme is a thriving local charity designed to serve residents in Malden who may need a helping hand and have no-one to whom they can turn. It was formed nearly 40 years ago when local churches and the Rotary Club combined their efforts to create the service. It’s a simple scheme. Local people from the community provide time and assistance to people in need. The client phones a central number and is given the phone number of the day’s ‘Duty Officer.’ Duty officers take it in turns to stay at home one morning a month and answer their phone to clients; they then phone one of the volunteers. A volunteer tells the duty officer if they are available. There is no compulsion for any volunteer to undertake a job if it’s not possible for them. Volunteers with cars are very popular. Over the years volunteers have undertaken a huge variety of tasks. The most requested is to be escorted to health appointments and clients have expressed real appreciation of this service. Recent compliments include: Could not be bettered. The driver always makes sure I am

taken to the right department in the hospital and ensures that the staff know I am there. Being blind I am dependent upon their good will in this matter and I have only the highest praise and thanks for them. And. The service could not have been better if undertaken by a private company. All credit to the volunteers who help. Will always recommend the service to others who may need help. A great service to the community. In recent years volunteers have driven a client to visit the grave of a beloved pet; visited a young man when he was admitted to Kingston hospital and had no friends or family nearby; referred someone who wanted a priest to visit them at home to the appropriate church; taken a man using a wheelchair, together with his young son, Christmas shopping; moved some light furniture round (though the client later changed their mind and wanted it back in the same position!). Although regular jobs can’t be accepted such as planned daily or weekly visits, there are always exceptions. This might include emergency help for a strictly limited period of time. For example, Malden Care undertook to drive someone who had had an accident and was temporarily incapacitated to visit her disabled child while waiting for a taxi card to be issued.

New Malden Matters

The National Association Of Residents’ Associations (Nora)

by John Knowls The New Malden Beverley Ward Residents’ Association is a member of NORA, and derives significant benefit from that membership, in learning of the experiences of similar Associations. The £25 per year it costs us is very good value. The member associations represent about two million households. There are several forms of Residents’ Associations. Some represent private estates or flat buildings. Others represent whole boroughs or whole towns. A few are federations of smaller, local Assocaitions. Attitudes differ considerably too. Some are intent on preserving the character of an area, perhaps resisting change, others are progressive, almost seeking change if it improves local facilities. Almost all endeavour to have nuisance reined in, present and prospective, whether it be unnecessary noise, bad behaviour, selfish behaviour

by a few who park inconsiderately, talk loudly in the street at night, park across driveways, and to have poor service by central and local government improved. NORA responds to various government consultations, and tries to initiate others which can improve the lot of the citizen generally. It circulates questions about problems faced in particular areas, so that other Associations can offer their experience and possible solutions. The AGM held in March included discussion on householder appeals against planning decisions; estate agents’ boards; local government finance, and the effect of reduced grants from central government on council services; planning, including density, the green belt, urban cramming; the effect of additional dwellings on already stretched services; noise; houses in multiple occupation; and the expansion of universities. www.newmaldenresidents.org.uk or e-mail us at newmaldenresidents@gmail.com The Groves Residents’ Association can be contacted at: grovesassociation@btinternet.com

Events Baby’s First Sponsored Event - Born Too Soon Last year, organised by Buggyfit Kingston, troops of Mums, Dad’s, buggies and babies did a charity walk from Kingston bridge to Hampton Court Palace in aid of the Kingston Hospital Born Too Soon fund for premature babies. After a fantastic result, we’re getting ready to do it again this year! Inspired by the personal experience of local Mum, Kelly Thorne, in 2014 the walkers did a fantastic job of smashing their original target and raised £4,000 for the charity! This was a remarkable outcome that enabled the charity to purchase two Humidifier’s. Important pieces of equipment for those babies that require oxygen 24 hours a day. This year, Born Too Soon are proud to be celebrating their 30th anniversary and we are determined to match the target so the charity can purchase a ‘Biliblanket’.

Invaluable to both parents and baby, this special suit enables a baby to receive phototherapy and at the same time be cuddled by their parents. Pauline Woods who set up the charity in 1985 following her own experience of the unit said; “We are so grateful to everyone at Buggyfit who took part and all the sponsors. Born Too Soon is very proud to be celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year and we would not be doing this without the help of people such as your good selves. I took part with my daughter and Granddaughter last year, who was only a few weeks old at the time. I thoroughly enjoyed it and intend to take part again this year. Please accept the heartfelt thanks of all the staff on the Unit and all our precious babies and their families.” So, please join us on Friday 5th June 2015, walking from Kingston Bridge to Hampton Court fishing up with a picnic, in aid of a fantastic cause. You’ll have a great day out and help local babies and families at the same time. To register please e mail borntoosoonwalk@gmail.com

to the sport, so don’t be shy about coming along and trying your hand. All you need to bring with you is an open mind, a good sense of humour, comfortable clothes and flat-soled shoes/trainers – we will provide you with the bowls, friendly advice, coaching and refreshments. After you have learned the basics you can then pick it up as you go along, gradually improving your technique and skill level at your own pace. Once you start playing you can buy a pair of bowling shoes for around £30 - £40 and should be able to pick up a decent set of 4 second-hand bowls for around £40. Unlike other sports our members can practice at our club most times during daylight hours 7 days a week, either on your own or with other club members. The main proviso to this is that the club’s home matches and competitions take priority over practice sessions. Most bowls clubs have an active social side – Supreme hold quiz nights, BBQ’s, day trips to the races and similar activities. Our outdoor bowls season runs from the end of April to the end of September with many members then playing indoor bowls throughout the remainder of the year.

entertainment! The Corpus Christi School Association are holding their annual ‘Fayre’ on Saturday 27th June and they will be turning the space around the school into a medieval marketplace. There will be the chance to find out more about the life of a knight in medieval times - how they armed themselves for combat, watch a sword fight and see the weapons for yourselves in a special armoury display. You can also try on a knight’s clothes for size and look inside a medieval camp and find out more about what life was like as a travelling knight. If that wasn’t enough you can try out your jousting skills, see if you can hit the target at the Archery display and give someone a soaking in the stocks! There will also be falconry demonstrations during the afternoon, with the chance to see Eagles, owls and kookaburras in action and get up close to the birds. Other fun and games on offer will be ‘Find a medieval princess’, a coconut shy, lucky dip and shove a ha’penny, treasure hunt, have your photo taken as a king or queen, splat the rat and the not so medieval inflatables! There will be an international theme to the food with Korean, Filipino, Polish and African all on sale alongside the ever popular Corpus Christi BBQ. Although the drinks in the bar won’t be medieval in flavour, there will be a taste of summer with pimms, chilled white wine and beer on offer. There will also be the chance to buy lots of delicious cakes and try your hand at winning some goodies on the jam jar, bottle and children’s toys and games tombolas. Our famous Grand Draw this year has some of the best prizes ever - top prize is an iPad mini and other prizes include a BMX bike, a night for two with dinner and breakfast in a Surrey Hotel, your very own drone and camera, two tickets for a show at the New Wimbledon Theatre, family meals at Nando’s and some fantastic large Lego sets. Tickets will be available to buy on the day. This really will be one of the best Corpus Christi fairs yet so join in the fun at the Ye Medieval Fayre on Saturday 27th June between 12.30 and 4pm at Corpus Christi school, Chestnut Grove, New Malden. Care As we’re heading into warmer days, we thought we’d share with you top tips for staying cool and hydrated this summer! 10 tips for staying cool & hydrated 1. Don’t spend long periods sitting or working outside during the hottest time of the day: late morning to mid-afternoon 2. If you’re travelling by car or public transport always take a bottle of water 3. Avoid strenuous activity, and limit activities like housework and gardening to the early morning or evening when it’s cooler 4. When inside, try to stay in the coolest parts of your home. Keep curtains and blinds closed in rooms that catch the sun 5. Keep windows shut while it’s cooler inside than out and open them when it gets hotter inside. If it’s safe, you could leave a window open at night when it’s cooler 6. Wear loose, lightweight, light-coloured, cotton clothing. 7. Take cool baths or showers 8. Splash your face with cool (not very cold) water, or

place a damp cloth on the back of your neck to help you cool off 9. Drink lots of fluid – even if you aren’t thirsty 10. Eat normally – even if you aren’t hungry, you need a normal diet to replace salt losses from sweating. In addition, try to have more cold foods, particularly salads and fruit, as these contain a lot of water What else can you do? Older people and those with health conditions (like breathing problems and heart conditions) can be especially affected by heatwaves and long spells of hot weather. Our Caring Neighbour service can help if you are worried about yourself, a friend or neighbour during the summer months, and think you or they would benefit from a little bit of extra support and help during the summer. Our team can offer more information and advice on staying healthy and hydrated during the summer months, as well as connect you to other services that enable you to live well. If you’d like more information about Caring Neighbour, or to receive a free guide “Staying cool in a heatwave” please call 020 8770 4089 or email centralservicesadmin@ageuksutton.org.uk

the surface of the water. Reduce the heat, cover and simmer gently for 45 minutes. Meanwhile, place the rest of the ingredients in a pan and bring to the boil. Simmer for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Leave to cool. Remove the racks from the pan and drain on a board lined with kitchen paper. Leave to cool for 5 minutes then brush each rack liberally with some of the sauce. Cook the ribs on the edge of a hot barbecue for 1015 minutes, turning and basting with any remaining sauce until the ribs are lightly charred in places. Alternatively, the ribs can be cooked under a medium preheated grill. TIP Most large supermarkets sell racks of ribs or ask your local butcher to prepare them for you. Single ribs will work just as well (you’ll need about 2kg in weight), just reduce the simmering time to about 25 minutes.

Finance Saving for Children What are the Best Options? By Ann Haldon

Children’s savings accounts provide a great way to build a nest egg for later life, perhaps for driving lessons or to fund a gap year, and are a good way to introduce the subject of money management. Putting some of their pocket money away each week encourages good financial habits, and teaches children the mechanics and rewards of saving - why they might have to wait before they buy something, plus the benefits of gaining compound interest through long-term saving. We look at three savings options below that could be ideal for your child. These are products that incorporate a range of features and benefits, including tax-free status, instant access, and longer savings terms. So let’s start with a product that was first introduced in 2011: Junior ISAs Junior ISAs are available to children under the age of 18 who don’t already have a Child Trust Fund. New legislation has recently been introduced to allow the transfer of monies from a Child Trust Fund into a Junior ISA, however, and this is due to take effect from April 2015.

contacts’ as far as the bank or building society is concerned. NS&I Children’s Bonds These are tax-free investments that run for a 5-year term. They can be purchased by a parent, guardian, grandparent or great grandparent on behalf of a child, and each ‘issue’ has its own guaranteed rate of interest which is paid at the end of the term. The minimum investment amount for these Bonds is £25, with £3,000 being the maximum amount allowed per issue. Once the 5-year term is complete, bonds can be rolled over for another term, up until the child is 16 years of age. They can be cashed in early, but doing so attracts a penalty of 90 days’ interest. As with the Junior ISA, the money belongs to the child rather than the parent. Interest is calculated daily and added to the account each year, so that the child also benefits from compound interest. Children’s savings accounts These types of account can be opened with as little as £1, with most bank and building societies offering at least one savings account for children. In most cases money can be withdrawn with no notice.

The contribution limit for a Junior ISA is £4,080 for the 2015-16 tax year, and there are two types of account available:

Tax is paid at 20% on children’s savings accounts, but it is normally possible to reclaim the money using Form R40. Better still, use Form R85 to have the interest paid tax-free from the outset. These forms can be downloaded from the HM Revenue and Customs website, or you can pick up an R85 form at the bank or building society holding the account.

• Cash Junior ISA: offering tax-free interest and instant access • Stocks and Shares Junior ISA: cash is invested in stocks and shares, with no tax paid on dividends or capital growth

A note of caution about tax If parents give their child money which subsequently earns interest of more than £100 in a tax year, the money will be taxed as though it belonged to the parent. This rule isn’t applicable to Junior ISAs or Children’s Bonds, however.

Children are entitled to open one of each of these accounts, and although parents or guardians can open and manage them, the money belongs to the child. Withdrawals by children are not allowed until they turn 18, but they can manage their own accounts when they reach 16 years of age.

Once a child reaches the age of seven they may be able to manage the account themselves, which is a great way for them to learn how to deal with their money.

The Junior ISA will be in the child’s name, but parents and guardians opening the account are the ‘registered

• Easy access: the interest rate will probably be lower with an easy or instant access account, but money can be withdrawn or deposited with no restrictions. These

There are two different types of children’s savings accounts, and you can open more than one:

accounts are popular with children as many of them offer free gifts, including piggy banks and toys. • Regular savings: interest rates will be slightly higher for this type of account, but money is not accessible and you need to make regular monthly deposits into the account. If any payments are missed you may suffer a reduction of interest. Which savings account you choose for your child depends on your own circumstances. The Junior ISA has proven to be very popular, and the new legislation regarding transfer of monies from a Child Trust Fund to a Junior ISA opens up the product to more people. If you asked a child which account they would prefer, it’s highly likely that they would choose whichever one offered a free gift. With this in mind, maybe the best solution is to open one account to keep them happy and another that provides a better rate of interest. www.gov.uk/junior-individual-savings-accounts/open-anaccount wwww.nsandi.com/childrens-bonds

AWARENESS RAISING:

Private fostering Private fostering is an arrangement whereby a child under the age of 16 years (or 18 if they are disabled) is looked after for 28 days or more in any one year by someone other than a close relative. Local authorities have a legal requirement to satisfy themselves that such children are safeguarded and their welfare promoted. This is done by offering support and guidance, undertaking assessments and checks and making regular visits to the child and carer. The Kingston fostering service’ focus this year has been to continue to raise awareness of private fostering amongst all agencies that may encounter a privately fostered child (such as schools, doctors’ surgeries, sports clubs and so on) so that children who are being cared for in this way are identified. If you think you may know of such an arrangement then give our local SPA team a call who will give further advice: Tel: 0208 547 5004

Nature Garden Birds by Sarah Harris

May is a super busy time for our garden birds. A walk down ‘The Cut’ in New Malden reveals a frantic toing and froing of adult birds searching out food for their young. Robins and blackbirds seem almost oblivious to we humans right now as we hurry past on our way to the station to catch a train, so focused are they on the task in hand. Unfortunately, the pair of robins I told you about in March that started a very early nest weren’t successful. A cold snap put paid to their four delightful little eggs that were laid in their beautiful nest. It is quite common for nests to fail if they are started too early. The robins will have gone on to build another nest and try again I am sure. In April I noticed a female blackbird diving head first into a mound of climbing rose and honeysuckle growing on an arch in my garden. For three days she was backwards and forwards with mouthfuls of dried grass, moss and finally mud (from one of my waterlogged plant pots!) to cement her nest together. The male was very attentive during this nest building stage and although not directly involved, he made sure she was OK, flying up to his favourite perch and bursting forth with his songs (which may have been entitled, ‘Hands Off My Bird’ and ‘Stay Off My Land’!) Now the pair of them are busy hopping about the lawns in neighbouring gardens, searching out earthworms and other goodies to feed their brood. At first the helpings were small, but over the last week the beakfuls they return with are getting larger as those little mouths get bigger! I am looking forward to fledging day but it also makes me a little nervous. We have a number of cats in our road, and visiting crows of various kinds who are all partial to a young fledgling bird. I trust that most of the cats in my neighbourhood are too terrified to enter my garden as I race out there screaming like a wild banshee (much to the disgust of my children) whenever I see one of those feline critters! (I do like cats by the way, just not at this time of year!) A few years ago I had several fledgling magpies in my garden. They certainly didn’t need protecting! They acted like delinquent teenagers, ripping the roofing felt off my garden shed and generally making

a nuisance of themselves. But they were so entertaining to watch that they fascinated me and I grew to appreciate them. The parents would come and take the crusts of bread I put out. Before feeding it to their young, they would soften it by dipping it in the bird bath. The young magpies, being quick to pick up new skills from their parents but as yet lacking the experience, would copy their actions by dipping the roofing felt into the bird bath before trying to eat it! Magpies are one of my favourite garden birds and surely one of the most intelligent. They are certainly one of the most handsome in my opinion and they seem to know it! I love the way they strut their stuff. Magpies, like all crow species, pair for life. In spring look out for the magpie gatherings on the rooftops that happen just before the breeding season. These are known as ‘magpie marriages’ and it is a time when the paired males and females can display (or flirt as I like to call it) in front of their other halves, and those singletons can look for a mate! This is a crucial part of courtship and strengthens the pair bond for the breeding season ahead. Look out for it next year. Happy birding!

Gardening Making a pest of themselves By Pippa Greenwood

They might be small but aphids - widely known as greenfly and blackfly - are one of the most common and widespread garden pests, with more than five hundred different species found in the United Kingdom alone. Greenfly and blackfly vary in colour, from green or black to grey, yellow, pink, brown or kaki. The majority are about 2mm long Most damage is done throughout spring and summer but there are aphids feeding somewhere pretty well throughout the year. In sheltered parts of your garden or in greenhouses and conservatories, some can be found even during the cooler winter months. They can breed rapidly and this is often done asexually or without need of a male. For much of the year females are predominant and give birth to huge numbers of genetically identical offspring.

The symptoms they cause include leaf yellowing or other brightly coloured discolouration, puckering, poor growth and stunting. The plant sap on which the aphids feed has an extremely high sugar content; in fact it is so sugary that the aphids cannot digest it all, so their excreta is very sticky and sugary. This is called ‘honeydew’ and you may have noticed it beneath aphid-infested plants. Because it is so sugary, honeydew attracts harmless but unattractive black ‘sooty moulds’.

On roses there are several species of aphid which may attack, often forming dense colonies on shoot tips, new leaf growth and flower buds. These aphids are mostly green, pinkish or yellowish in colour and up to 3mm long. If vegetables are more your thing then you may see the black bean aphid as it forms dense colonies especially at the shoot tips and beneath the leaves of broad beans in the spring. If you pinch out the aphidencrusted shoot tips on beans the problem is often solved. Another common one is the woolly aphid which attacks apple trees and is also often seen on ornamental Malus such as crab apples, pyracantha and cotoneaster. Colonies of the aphid covered with white, waxy, fluffy fibres develop on the bark, especially near pruning cuts on older stems, or on younger stems where they also cause swellings on the stem. It is pretty well impossible to garden without aphids causing some grief – the best you can do is to reduce their numbers. Encouraging naturally occurring predators such as blue tits, ladybirds, hoverflies and lacewings will all help. In some situations it is also worth introducing biological controls and these

work especially well in an enclosed area such as a greenhouse or conservatory. Aphid predators such as the larva of the midge Aphidoletes and even ladybirds, can all be purchased, as can the tiny parasitic wasp Aphidius. Ladybirds (available from my website, www. pippagreenwood.com) are perfect for using on aphid outbreaks anywhere in the garden from pots and borders to hanging baskets and hedges. The great thing with these is that, once established they will start to breed and add to the natural ladybird population. There are a number of different chemicals (including organic or ‘green’ ones such as those based on fatty acids or plant oils) available for controlling aphid pests too, but not all are suitable for use on every plant, so check the label carefully before buying or using, and always follow the instructions carefully. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for ladybirds and other biocontrols to control greenfly, Nemaslug, brilliant weeders, pop-up crop covers, copper tape and lots more besides.

A Malden Man by Raj Randhawa I’ve been living in New Malden for almost 9 years now and in that time I haven’t really been that involved with the Korean community. We have Korean friends (parents from the school my children attend), we’ve eaten in Korean restaurants, and we shop in the Korean supermarkets. I’ve learned that Korean BBQ (cooked at your table on a charcoal fire) is delicious, as is Bibimbap (the Korean national dish). I know I find the national lager ‘Hite’ a little too light for my taste and I’ve worked out from hearing Koreans greet each other that hello is ‘ann-yeong-haseyo’. But that’s it, that’s all I know. I assume there are a lot of us in New Malden that could do with learning more about our Korean neighbours, so this ones for all of us: Confucian For Koreans, the family is central to their daily lives. In Confucian tradition, the father is the head of the family and it is his responsibility to provide food, clothing and shelter, and to approve the marriages of family members. The teachings of Confucius spell out the position of the individual in Korean society, which is a system of behaviours and ethics that stress the obligations of people towards one another based upon their relationship. Confucianism stresses duty, loyalty, honour, piety, respect for seniority and sincerity. Ancestors Koreans hold their ancestors in the highest esteem hence the popularity of ancestor worship. Ancestral ceremonies are held for the previous three generations (parents, grandparents, and great grandparents) several times a year, particularly on Chusok and New Year’s Day. On Chusok, people cook and set out food to celebrate their ancestors. Kibun Kibun is a word with no literal English translation. The closest words to describe it are pride, mood, feelings, or state of mind. If you hurt someone’s ‘kibun’ you hurt their pride and cause them to 60

lose dignity, and lose face. Korean interpersonal relationships operate on the principle of harmony. It is important to maintain a peaceful, comfortable atmosphere at all times, even if it means telling a ‘white lie’. Kibun enters into every facet of Korean life, so it is important to be able to judge the state of someone else’s kibun to avoid hurting it, and to keep your own kibun at the same time. In business for example, a manager’s kibun is damaged if his employees do not show proper respect. A subordinate’s kibun is damaged if his manager criticises him in public. Gifts Gifts express a great deal about a relationship and are always reciprocated. It is deemed inconsiderate to give someone an expensive gift if you know that they cannot afford to reciprocate accordingly. If you visit a Korean household, take fruit, chocolates or flowers. (The number 4 is considered unlucky, so gifts should not be given in multiples of 4, however the number 7 is considered lucky, so buy a few more of what you’re going to take!). Also remember to use both hands when offering a gift. House rules If you are invited to a South Korean home, remember to remove your shoes before entering the house. If you’re there for dinner, the eldest or most senior family member is always served first and is the first to eat before everyone else digs in. And don’t point your chopsticks at anyone, not only might you have their eye out, it is considered rude. And remember next time you greet a Korean person, try an ‘ann-yeong-haseyo’ and watch them smile… or laugh their heads off! It’s worth the risk!
