A military child born in Germany, Zaytoven lived all over the world before his family finally settled down in California. Getting his start playing the church organ, Zaytoven soon mastered playing the guitar, drums and piano by ear. After high school his family relocated to Georgia but Zaytoven stayed behind a while to pursue his music working with artist JT the Bigga Figga before eventually following down to Georgia. The branding opportunity missed by shouting your Myspace page is Huge! Trust me, Myspace has enough money to handle their own brand promotion without your help. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not putting Myspace down. I think Myspace is a wonderful tool to showcase your music and information. Especially when you’re first starting out. Yes Myspace has lost some of it’s social network appeal as the newness has worn, but ounce for ounce pound for pound, it’s one of the easiest ways to get your music and information up and out. And quiet as kept, they still are in the top 10 trafficked websites on earth. So when people say Myspace is dead, trust me their not talking about the traffic generated to the site. Where else can you go and potentially reach millions of fans? Facebook? I rest my case. Branding is the art of promoting your own brand, your own identity, the tradename of your product or service. So when you promote Myspace, not only do you miss branding ops, but you miss the opportunity to drive traffic to your own domain name. Why is this important? Well, let’s say for instance that you decide to take your Myspace page down, or it’s hacked or let’s say Myspace changes their music policy? Think of the people who now don’t know how to find you. An option to all of this is obtaining your own domain name. Your own www. online real estate. Depending on where you go to purchase your domain, a .com address will run you about $10.00 per year. On the other hand a .info domain extension can cost you as little as .89. You can then take your domain name and forward it to your Myspace page similar to forwarding your phone to another number. I recommend using Go Daddy as your domain registrar. Go Daddy is easy to use and their dashboard makes it really simple to forward the doman and with masking. Masking allows you to mask the domain you’re forwarding to with your own domain name. So you’re on Myspace, but it says your domain name. Branding accomplished. Being successful online is about doing a number of small things and branding your identity is one of them. Ideally, you should have your own website in addition to a Myspace page. You must learn to integrate your online presence. Your Twitter page should point people to your Myspace and FB pages and vice versa. The more pages that you have that point to one another the more important the search engines perceive you. The more important you are in Search engines the easier it is for someone to find your brand! Cannick Holding down the southeast side of Atlanta DJ Ace has built a loyal following in the streets as well as strong relationships with some of the A-town’s biggest names. With over 13 years in the industry, Ace has played a role in breaking artists such as Yung Ralph, Gucci Mane, Alley Boy and a host of others. Talking with Ace, you will quickly realize his passion for the game and his disgust with DJs who just hop on the coattails of any artist with a buzz instead of getting behind them early on and helping create that buzz. Ace’s code and work ethic have earned him a strong reputation in the streets for being one of the few DJs who will get out in the trenches alongside the artist, promoting the project, setting up shows, making connections and putting it in the people’s face. Ace explains that he’s comfortable doing this because he doesn’t just work with any artist. If you want hime to be involved with a project the music has to be up to par. For him it’s not just about a check. It’s about accomplishing a goal. “Artists come to me from these streets and they looking for a another way of living. That’s why I go in like I do. It’s about the personal relationships more than anything.” Reflecting back on the last 13 years, Ace talks about how he first started out promoting High School parties at the skating rinks and his time running with Kizzy Rock, Raheem the Dream and DJ smurf all the way to him having managed Gucci Mane and OJ Da Juiceman. It was Monday morning and the news had just broken about comments made by Senator Harry Reid during the 2008 Democratic Primaries when describing why he thought America was ready to embrace, then Senator, Barrack Obama as the first black president. Staring at pictures of Drake as I listened to the story I began to notice the similarities in both Drake and Obamas story. Both seemingly came out of nowhere to claim the top spot in their respective fields. Both embraced technology using the internet to promote, building strong grass roots campaigns with a huge followings on college campuses. Both arrived at a point in time when the game was at its worse and people were waiting for a change. And as I sat listening to CNN I couldn’t help but notice that like Obama, Drake is “light skinned” and having been raised by his white Jewish mother in an affluent area of Toronto, has limited “Negro Dialect” (unless he wants to have one). Reflecting on that last similarity I began to question the role of race in the entertainment industry. When you look back on a history of black firsts such as Vanessa Williams being the first black woman to win the Miss America Pageant or Halle Berry being the first black woman to win an Oscar for Best Actress, you can’t help but notice that they are mixed. Seeing as how white people account for a majority of the population and make up the majority of the hip hop consumer base I went to my twitter followers to ask, “How do you feel skin tone or race in general affects the success of an artist?” Below are just a few of the responses we received. If anything, Drake can be argued to represent a perfect black masculinity as the Obama of Hip Hop because he can codeswitch with the best of them. It is no surprise (or shouldn’t be) that black performers in hip hop live in two extremities – either OVER masculinated (the thug, the ‘bad nigga’ if you will) or not threatening at all. Personally, I’ve always been confused by the number of Producers that I meet who complain about not making enough money selling beats or even worse, not making any money at all, especially, when I hear so many artists rapping and singing over industry tracks because they don’t have any beats of their own. As a producer, you are in a better position than anyone else in the industry to make money. The #1 thing that’s stopping you is YOU. In this article I will go over the three deadly sins responsible for killing the careers of many producer before they even began day, possibly, down the line making some of that money back but a producer, who makes his money up front from the sell or lease of the beat, won’t spend $50 to promote his own career and reach new clients. There are no excuses for you not to advertise or have business cards, flyers and your own website. Being cheap keeps you broke. Sin 2: GREED – You can’t have all the money. Your biggest opportunity to see some real money in this new industry is through publishing. That publishing money comes from sources like radio, television and film licensing. Too often producers get greedy when they see a record that they’ve produce begin to grow legs. Asking for ridiculously high advances because you think a song is about to blow will most likely lead to one of these three outcomes: 1) They kill the song and run with another single, You lose! 2) They get someone else to do a new beat for the record & You Lose! 3) They pay you the money and you severely hinder the promotion of the project & you think you win but in actuality you still lose! That $5,000 advance you’re asking for could’ve gotten radio spins or any number of other things that would’ve contributed to the overall success on the record leading to bigger money on the back end. Sin 3: ARROGANCE – Don’t ever make the mistake that your beat is a complete song. At the end of the day you need artists just as bad as they need you. Quit pricing tracks based on your opinion of your own music and start pricing them based on your accomplishments. Why are you asking for $1,000 for a beat when you’ve never had a major placement, a song on the radio, placement on a mixtape or even sold a beat for that matter. The truth is your beats probably aren’t as hot as you think they are and even if they are, you don’t have a monopoly on hot tracks. There are thousands of other producers out there that will happily take the money you’re leaving on the table by charging too much. Eliminating these three sins is the first step to making more money selling beats.
