NATIONAL DAY

Celebrations The national motto may be “Mir wölle bleiwe wat mir sinn” (we want to remain what we are) but on 22 and 23 June every year Luxembourgers and foreign national residents celebrate what Luxembourg is now – a multinational country where tradition and modernity sit comfortably side by side. The main celebrations take place in the capital city, which this year marks 1050 years since its foundation in 963.

The official celebrations begin with the traditional changing of the guard outside the Grand Ducal palace at around 4 p.m.

The traditional Te Deum mass at 10.30 a.m. in the Notre Dame cathedral is attended by the royal family, national and local politicians, representatives of the diplomatic corps and assorted dignitaries.

A torchlight parade around the streets of the upper city begins at 10 p.m. and this year features themes relating to the city’s 1050yearold history.

The mass is followed by a mili tary parade by the army and security forces personnel as well as numerous vehicles. Grand Duke takes the salute on a podium on the avenue de la Liberté.

The biggest party of the year attracts over 100,000 people to the city. Local bars set up outdoor stages for DJs and live bands. The highlight of the evening is the largest fireworks display in the Grand Duchy and launched around midnight.

At around noon a 101shot canon salute fired from the Fetschenhof echoes across the valley.
