Needs a home: Allie, thought to be eight to 10 years old, was found living under a property by an incoming tenant. When found, her claws were so overgrown they were cutting into the pads of her paws and she was underweight, but after a manicure and a good feed she’s looking better.

THE number of cats needing to be rehomed is on the rise as the residential red zones empty out, according to the Cats’ Protection League. Cake decorating: From left, Jacqui, Katie and Charlotte Davies help decorate a giant cake to celebrate the first birthday of the Restart mall in Cashel Street on Saturday. The venture to create a colourful shopping precinct using shipping containers represented a new beginning in the business recovery of central Christchurch when it opened in October 2011, eight months after February’s devastating earthquake. Business originally signed leases for six months but the Restart precinct has endured and evolved over the year while the central city red zone has shrunk. Photo: Gilbert Wealleans
