Seating plan in the car

Mum can sit in the front. Dad can sit next to Mum. Grandma and Grandpa can sit behind Jack and me. My sister can sit next to Grandma. Jack can sit between me and Ben. I can sit behind Mum.

Reason for placement Mum can drive the car. Dad can read the map. They can sleep. She can look out of the window. He can talk to us. I can sing to Mum.

Follow-up In pairs, children have to give reasons for their seating plans. Suggestions for these are in Box 29.

Procedure 1 Ask the children to write the numbers one to ten (in words) down the lefthand margin of the page. Check their spelling. 2 The children then create a holiday checklist for themselves. They write the things that they have to remember to take away on a beach holiday. The catch is that you would not take ten hats, so the children have to come up with a feasible list. See Box 30 for suggestions.
