Dunfein Havurah Goes Back to School Among a variety of ritual, recreational, and social activities, every year the Congregation Beth David Dunfein Havurah also schedules a community service project. Its members have volunteered, for example, at the Second Harvest Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, and the Faith in Action Rotating Shelter. This year during Thanksgiving week, Dunfein targeted the Resource Area for Teaching (RAFT) for participation. Founded in 1994, RAFT's mission is to help teachers use hands-on education to inspire in their students the joy and discovery of learning. RAFT's Activity Kits, Idea Sheets, and low-cost teaching supplies enrich and improve the education of over 850,000 young people each year. The organization converts commonly found or discarded materials from the business community into low cost student Activity Kits, all built with the help of thousands of volunteers. And that’s the role that the eager members of the Dunfein Havurah played on November 21 at the Sunnyvale RAFT Volunteer Center.

From the Rabbi By Leslie Alexander I want to write from the heart. To serve as a Rabbi of Community Engagement and Outreach at CBD is to have an awesome view of the flow of life. It is sometimes uplifting, sometimes elating, sometimes wrenching, but always, always hopeful. In a given day, I might meet new prospective members or talk to or visit people who are ill and help them with arrangements to receive meals or other things they need from Chevrat Chesed. I see so many members who are busy cooking for other members, spending time with them at difficult interludes, planning social action events that feed or clothe others whom they have never met, that it fills my heart. A few weeks ago Threads of Tradition was here sewing Tachrichim (shrouds) in which to clothe members as they are laid to rest. My father is wrapped in this lovingly created garment as are so many others. Some of you, I meet at meetings such as the new women’s group, A Place for Women, Men’s Club or Program Committee. You join together in community and yes, fun, to create experiences that are creative, enjoyable and bring us all together in celebration and appreciation for the blessings that we have. Right now, A Place for Women is working on several exciting events including Succulent Shvat where attendees will create their own succulent gardens while sipping tequila and enjoying cactus-based treats at Marlene Burak’s home (see page 13); a Japanese Tea Ceremony at Hakone Gardens guided by Wendy Glasser (details to come), and a White Elephant sale during the Shushan County Fair (see page 18). Many women have experienced Ladies Who Lunch or Dames Who Dine and met new people and/or have enhanced relationships (see page 13). The Men’s Club gets together for bocce ball, coffee and schmoozing, Beer with the Boys and soon a Superbowl party here at the synagogue on February 5th at 2:30pm. This event is for all CBD men, women and supervised children. Guest are welcome (see page 8). The Program Committee has been going strong since its inception, planning events that we all have loved, from CBD @ Homes, BBQ and Barchu, ZipCode Potluck, and Jewish Time Travel. Upcoming is the newly revamped Purim Carnival on March 12th. Called the Shushan County Fair, it will feature exhibits and contests, demonstrations, a petting zoo, expanded inflatable rides and new games in addition to White elephant and book sale. Our events focus on fun for all ages and stages of life, where we can truly get to know each other inter-generationally and appreciate who we are and what we bring to the synagogue experience. Having fun together is also what we are about! Last March in Washington D.C more than 20 of you attended the AIPAC policy conference. We went to sessions together, met up for photos, informal snacks, schmoozing and a special lunch. This year the policy conference is on March 26-28. Bring the CBD spirit east and feel the multigenerational connection, as several members come with their teen and young adult children. Some of you I meet when I come to say hello at a Hazak event or attend one of the new daytime adult offerings. Hazak organizes fun and educational events for older adult members and now Iris Bendahan is working tirelessly to make more offerings available such as mini courses, speakers, Israel discussion and more. Some of you I meet everyday at a synagogue minyan. You attend because you want to pray, because you want to support others as they say kaddish, because you believe that having a minyan is crucial. Those who attend know that now it is a small “hevrah,” friendship group, of folks who look forward to seeing each other at the end of the day or on Sunday morning and miss each other when absent. Now I ask you, where do you meet up with Beth David? Interested in Adult Education? Join one of the ongoing adult ed classes and be sure to attend the Scholar-in-Residence weekend from January 27-29th with Rabbi Naomi Levy (see page 23). Looking for a Religious School and/or Teen Education Program? We have top notch programs designed to foster Jewish identity and values in fun and engaging ways. Are you a young adult looking to connect? Join us for Tequila, Tacos and Talmud or a Night In Italy (see page 10). Where do you meet up with Beth David? Could there be a new way for you to experience the daily life and energy here? We want you, we need you, you matter!!!! If you want a new way to connect, call me and I will have coffee/tea with you and discuss what you might love.

President’s perspective By dan skilken At the December 13th annual meeting, the Beth David board of directors offered a detailed review of our progress and synagogue health. There was some great news, some amazing progress, and some congregational concerns aired. In the last few years we’ve transformed Beth David. Certainly our new building has changed how we look, and how we can operate. We now have the most exciting synagogue facility in the Bay Area that inspires spiritual feelings and allows us to be the best synagogue we can be. But the real transformation for Beth David over the last three years has been in our membership. We tried three times in the past fifteen years to remodel the building, and each time we couldn’t raise the money or commitment to do it. In the last two years, we raised $7.9 million for this construction project. You, our membership, believe in our future enough to invest in creating a new building that serves our needs. This renewed commitment to Beth David’s future is a clear indication of the impact our synagogue makes on our community and our congregation’s desire to see this Kehillah thrive for generations to come. This investment is already delivering dividends – our membership numbers now total 1344 people in 515 families. We grew a net increase of 22 membership units this year, the largest annual increase since 1993. In addition, our resignations are down because people are finding new ways to connect and participate at CBD. Over the last few years, we have invested in our school, education programs, and in membership programs that help our members find a more meaningful connection to our synagogue life. This investment meant dipping into our financial reserves to reverse a ten-year slide in our membership numbers. We had to change that trend or Beth David would have eventually shrunk to numbers that could not sustain the synagogue. This investment is the major reason behind the deficit budget numbers that the board has approved. We received a lot of congregational concerns following the annual meeting that Beth David cannot sustain a deficit budget like this, and still have a solid financial future. In addition, they want to see more information on the budget tradeoffs we are making, and a more realistic budget for maintaining our new building. Based on these concerns, I called a special meeting of the Executive Board and Finance Committee to review CBD’s income and expenses at this midpoint of the year to see how we can reduce the deficit without sacrificing important programs. For this year, the Board approved a budget deficit of $82,000. With mid-year numbers coming in, the Finance Committee reviewed pledges and receipts and found that income from Sustaining Contributions and the Annual Campaign are projected higher, but other income areas may not meet projections. They are anticipating that our income will come in on target. At this meeting, our executive committee worked with department heads to find options that can reduce $34,000 in budgeted expenses without adversely affecting our programming or membership goals. We will also need to cover forecasted financing expenses of the Next 50 program that will unfortunately offset this savings, but we have certainly made some progress in getting the budget back into alignment. We will take these recommendations to the general board on Wednesday, January 25th for deeper discussion and as always, congregants are welcome at our board meetings if you would like to join us for this discussion. As we enter the budgeting process for next year, the Board will take a fresh look at where CBD now is, with a renewed building, increased membership, and new spending priorities, to better allocate funding to support CBD’s growth and core mission, maintain our facility, and a plan to balance the budget. An important consideration is how our congregation decides to address the debt incurred in completing the Next50 project, and to what extent debt service will be a part of our budget going forward. We plan to hold congregational meetings to discuss options for retiring the Next 50 debt on Sunday, January 22 at 10:00AM and Monday, January 30 at 7:30PM. On behalf of the board of directors, I want to express our appreciation for your amazing commitment, your feedback, and dedication to creating and maintaining a new future for Congregation Beth David. Young Adults Help Hatikvah House Residents Ring in Some Hanukkah Happiness Recently the residents of Hatikvah House began their holiday celebration with CBD’s Young Adult Hanukkah Happiness event on December 6th organized by Iris Bendahan. The young adults assisted the residents in ushering in the season by making Hanukkah decorations and edible dreidels, lighting candles and singing Hanukkah favorites. The residents had a great time, and the Young Adults began their season, as it should be, with the great feeling you get after doing some good social action! Hatikvah House is a residence for Developmentally disabled adults. The various Jewish entities in the community share in making sure the residents get Jewish programming throughout the year. We hosted the residents at the CBD Sukkah this past Sukkot.

A Panel Discussion with :

Rabbi Philip Ohriner

Pastor Arvin Engelson

Shaykh Alaeddin El Bakri

What do Jewish, Christian and Muslim Scriptures teach about our obligations to serve humanity, both inside and outside of our religious community? Congregation Beth David, Saratoga Federated Church, and West Valley Muslim Association invite all to a panel discussion with Rabbi Philip Ohriner, Pastor Arvin Engelson, and Shaykh Alaeddin El Bakri.

Saturday, February 25th 1:15 – 2:45pm at CBD Space is limited. RSVP http://trialogue.eventbrite.com Learn about the unifying teachings from our sacred texts which can guide all Jews, Christians and Muslims to cooperate and collaborate in service to the poor, suffering and marginalized. Kosher and halal refreshments will be provided following the panel discussion.

Rabbi Philip Ohriner received an M.A. in Hebrew Arts and Letters and rabbinic ordination with a concentration in Talmud and Rabbinics. He also received training in clinical pastoral skills and worked as a chaplain at Bellevue Hospital in New York. Rabbi Ohriner served as the Legacy Heritage Rabbinic Fellow at Congregation Beth Israel in Flint, Michigan, before joining Congregation Beth David.

Pastor Arvin Engelson received his masters degree at GordonConwell Theological Seminary and a doctorate at Princeton. He deeply values dialog with all for whom faith is difficult. He also enjoys helping people experience both subtle and substantive forms of transformation when they at an impasse, captive to issues, in need of healing, or seeking truth and grace to live in reality.

Shaykh Alaeddin El-Bakri began his study of Islam in North Africa and continued his education in the Islamic sciences in Jordan, learning from predominant scholars in the Muslim world. He has served the Muslim community in the United States in numerous capacities. Having been trained in both the Islamic sciences and secular education, Shaykh Alaeddin has the ability to appeal to a wide variety of audiences.

Celebrating the Light of Our Diverse Community By Iris Bendahan With all the worries about rising anti-Semitism, intolerant rhetoric, and bigoted politicians, it was delightful to enjoy the city of Saratoga’s heightened commitment to embracing diversity this past Thanksgiving. It began with the annual Saratoga ecumenical service on Thanksgiving morning which was hosted at Beth David this year. One could not help but listen with wonder as Christian, Muslim, Jewish and Hindu clergy, chants, music and lyrics comingled on the bimah. How could it be that we have such strife, when the messages of harmony that were shared out of each faith’s scripture are so similar? But there was no strife to be seen that day, as the 400+ crowd enjoyed the wonderful treats Beth David had set out. Later that week, the rain gave pause for the gathered crowd to enjoy Saratoga’s newly modified Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony, now on Saturday night to accommodate the Jewish members of the community, and renamed “A Celebration of Light.” Each faith had the opportunity to introduce their celebration and light up the night with their own display. In addition to the traditional Christmas tree lighting and caroling by students from the local elementary school (which included a Hanukkah song), the Hindu community lit a trident as children performed a traditional chant; the West Valley Muslim Association (WVMA) lit a symbolic structure featuring 2 minarets, topped with the half moon crescent, and Beth David lit a new person-sized Hanukkiyah created by Jeff Warwick. This proud display of diversity really warmed up night and the weeks following! In February we will have 2 additional opportunities to continue to get personally acquainted with members of the WVMA and SFC (Saratoga Federated Church) under the auspices of the Abrahamic Alliance International (AAi). On Saturday, Feb 25, CBD will host a Trialogue where the clergy from each of the 3 faiths will share what each community’s scriptures say about serving, the poor, suffering and marginalized as a way to begin a dialogue with each other (see page 20). The next day, Feb 26, we will get the chance to put the words into action with a meal service for the homeless (see page 19). This is the 4th AAi meal service Beth David has participated in. Beth David will host the meal preparation after which the meals will be served at a local shelter. An exciting part of the AAi meal service program, is the time for small group dialog with members from each of the 3 communities. One then continues to work with that group throughout the meal prep. At the last event my daughter, Arielle, connected with a lovely young Muslim girl who had just ‘escaped’ Turkey. They’ve kept in touch and met up since then.

The menorah pictured above was made by CBD’s VP of Membership Jeff Warwick. The menorah is an impressive nine feet tall and nine feet wide.

The only path to peace is through understanding, and the way to understanding is by getting to know ‘the others’ personally. I hope everyone will ride the momentum of Saratoga’s embrace of diversity this Thanksgiving and come to our AAi Trialogue and/or meal service (space is limited for the meal service event, but not the Trialogue). Look for signup through the bulletin/website! Scan to RSVP for Trialogue

Important Information for users of Hearing Aids or Cochlear Implants By Lynne Kinsey If you have a telecoil (also called a T-Coil) in your hearing device you may be able to hear at Beth David better than you thought was possible. If you have a T -Coil, everything spoken into a microphone in any of the prayer spaces, the Beit Midrash, or the Board Room will be heard by you directly in your ear(s). The telecoil works because Magnetic Induction Loops (copper wires) were installed in designated areas at CBD. An electronics professional can better explain how it works. but in essence the sound system pulses are magnetically transmitted around the room via the wire loop and picked up by the T-Coil in your hearing device. This results in the sound being heard by you directly with no interference from other noises or conversations in the room. If you have a hearing device and do not know if you have a T-Coil, you need to ask your audiologist or hearing aid dispenser. If the answer is “yes, you need to know that it is activated and how to turn it on and off. Small in-the-ear and some other hearing aids may not have a T-coil. In older hearing aids there was often an obvious switch labeled T/M (Telecoil/Microphone) and sometimes a combined TM combined setting. The combined setting would allow you to hear both the person using the microphone and the person next to you. Current digital hearing aids may have an automatic T-coil that is enabled when it senses the magnetic signal from the loop. It may have a multifunctional button, about which you need to know what functions are activated with each number of clicks. On both of my devices program #1 is an everyday program and #2 is the telecoil program. I have a total of 5 programs, so it is important to know which program is on and which one I want. You might only have 1 or 2 programs. I usually activate my combined program when I am coming to CBD, so I do not forget. Besides being more beautiful and functional, Beth David has become more Hearing-Loss-Friendly. So turn on your telecoil when you come to CBD and hear more at services and programs. Feel free to ask me questions. If I cannot answer them I will suggest who might know the answers.

51st Annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service On Thanksgiving morning more than 400 members of multiple and diverse faiths in the community of Saratoga joined together to give thanks.
