Personal Information

Luiz Santos

I am a documentary photographer and have been working independently for some years producing stories in Brazil, the Middle East, The EUA, Europe and Africa. I am the recipient of the Endframe Award - Promoted by The British Journal of Photography/Nikon and have exhibited consistently in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and China. My work has been published by a number of magazines in the UK and in Brazil, and was selected by the Royal Photographic Society for the International Print Exhibition/2005. I also took part in the book Brazilian Knots – produced by the Brazilian Embassy in London. My latest story was produced in Malta where I photographed, interviewed (audio-recorded) African refugees and Maltese officials. At the present I am dealing with the publication of The Book Of The Gods – a self financed project, which took five years to complete, and involved many trips to Brazil and Nigeria. The book is a study of the Yoruba religious culture and its influences in Brazil. I have been working in close collaboration with John Easterby – former Head of Archives for the London office of Magnum Photos. I am interested in cross media (audio, video, still photographs, slide shows). I am proficient in the use of 35mm systems (analogue and digital) as well as Medium Format cameras (especially 6X6), which I use for portraits. I speak fluent Portuguese, English and Italian and I can communicate well in Spanish. My work is around and about the human condition. I care.
