Zócalo Here is the navel of the world, here Tenochtitlan fell, it is here that the Spanish raised the new city with the rubble from the temples. To this day, the Zócalo is the site where the absence will always be present… ≤ The Zócalo itself is an urban exception: 200 by 200 metres of concrete slabs with nowhere to hide, nowhere to sit down. The only refuge from the sun is in the narrow line of shadow drawn by the enormous flagpole, which rises 60 metres into the sky… ≤ Whoever has something to say and not just to sell, does it here simply by placing themselves in the plaza. The body, the physical presence, is the message.

Aquí está el ombligo del mundo, aquí cayó Tenochtitlan, aquí construyeron los españoles con los escombros de los templos su nueva ciudad. Desde entonces hasta hoy, el Zócalo es un lugar donde lo ausente siempre está presente… ≤ El Zócalo es, en sí, un estado de excepción urbano: 200 x 200 metros cubiertos por nada más que placas de concreto, ningún espacio que invite a permanecer ahí, ningún lugar para sentarse. Para refugiarse del sol, sólo se cuenta con la delgada línea de sombra que dibuja el enorme asta de bandera que se alza 60 metros hacia el cielo… ≤ Quien tiene algo que decir —y no sólo que vender—, lo hace simplemente colocándose aquí. El cuerpo, la presencia física, es el mensaje.

Hier ist der Bauchnabel der Welt, el ombligo, hier fiel Tenochtitlán, hier bauten die Spanier aus Tempeltrümmern ihre neue Stadt. Bis heute ist der Zócalo ein Ort, an dem das Abwesende immer anwesend ist… ≤ Der Zócalo ist an sich schon ein urbaner Ausnahmezustand: 200 mal 200 Meter nackte Betonplatten, kein Ort zum Verweilen, keine Sitzgelegenheit nirgendwo. Vor der Sonne schützen kann man sich nur im schmalen Schatten des gewaltigen Fahnenmastes, der 60 Meter in den Himmel ragt… ≤ Wer etwas zu sagen und nicht nur zu verkaufen hat, tut das schon, indem er sich hier platziert. Der Körper, die physische Präsenz, ist die Message.
