El 10 de mayo de 1940 la Alemania nazi invadió el país. Alrededor de 100000 judíos fueron asesinados en el Holocausto y otros grupos étnicos sufrieron también grandes pérdidas. El 5 de mayo de 1945, la guerra terminó tras la liberación, en su mayor parte, por los canadienses .
