Port Loyola: the New Battleground Division By Gilroy Usher, Sr. “Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly” Robert Kennedy In the November 4 general election, I lost the Port Loyola division to the three consecutive term Area Representative Anthony “/Boots” Martinez by a mere 76 votes. That happened although my opponent outspent me at least 10 to one and had

extensive access to government resources for the last eight years. That’s a spectacular performance, considering the 2012 defeat by 800 votes to Martinez. That was when I was green to electoral politics. On election night the media had no one posted at the Custom Department to cover the counting in Port Loyola. Like a number of political pundits they had already

concluded that the exercise would result in another UDP landslide in the division. They did not know that as a result of the massive neglect of the division, the Area Representative was sitting on a powder keg that would eventually explode. There was a ground swell of support for my candidacy in Port Loyola. Upon visiting the homes in the division, I saw firsthand the hardship families are experiencing and under the theme: “Time for a change; we deserve better” my message addressed the concerns of the people for land, proper housing, jobs, and other basic things to improve their standard of living. As the poverty situation in Port

Belize City, November 16, 2015 “…we won despite the media who campaigned against us...I’m talking about that ‘wutless’ Channel 5, that ‘wutless’ Plus TV, and that ‘wutless’ Kremandala” Those were the menacing and hatefilled words that came out of Dean Barrow’s mouth as he delivered his “victory speech” in front of his Party headquarters on election night, Wednesday November 4th. Barrow, apparently filled with adrenalin from the news that his Party had successful tricked enough voters to give them a third term, felt he was truly Belize’s emperor who deserved to be revered and adored by the media, and that no one should dare to criticise him. Barrow made it clear that he was gravely upset with the manner in which the media handled his Government, and appeared to be riling up his supporters to turn against those media houses. If anyone is ‘wutless’ it is Dean Barrow himself. This wasn’t anything new. It was vintage Barrow, with a heightened sense of arrogance which should trigger serious concerns about Belize’s democracy and the future of the media in Belize. The UDP has, in the past, attempted to censor media houses. In 2010, the Barrow Government boycotted Channel 5 for being heavily critical of the Government. The issues were ironed out eventually, but a serious precedent had been

Loyola worsened under Boots Martinez’s watch, he maintained his iron grip on the division through victimization and the creation of a dependency system, where the people have to take all sorts of insults from him for the most basic things to survive. Despite those unjust practices however, he could not and cannot stifle the desire of voters of Port Loyola residents for a better future for themselves and their community. Port Loyola is no longer a division that is a guaranteed seat for the Red. Port Loyola is a division of thinking people who realize that they deserve better in life. It is thus the new battleground division in the country. November 4th proved that.

set. Since 2014, the UDP Government launched an assault on Plus TV, placing a prohibition of Governmentrelated ads on the media. So while the UDP’s Channel 7 and Wave TV gets dozens of ads per week, that support does not go Plus TV’s way. Barrow’s clear threat to the members of the fourth estate has been overlooked for the most part. There has been no kind of reply from any of the media houses which he called out, and we hope it is not because the media has chosen to cower and surrender.

The People Will Decide National Convention would see 2,793 delegates cast votes for a new Leader and National Executive Belize City, November 18, 2015 In the upcoming days, the People’s United Party will enter another intriguing chapter in its outstanding history. A new leader will rise from within the ranks of the Party at a national convention to be held on Sunday, January 31, 2015. Following the Party’s loss by a close-margin in the November 4th general elections, Party Leader Hon. Francis Fonseca, who has been at the helm since 2010, announced that he will be stepping down and will help to guide the process of electing a new leader. On Wednesday, November 11th, the Party’s National Executive met at Independence Hall and gave support to the holding of a National Convention which will place key posts in the Executive up for election, as stipulated under the Party’s Constitution. As a result of this, the posts that will be up for voting are: Party Leader, Deputy Party Leaders (4), Party Chairman, Legal Advisor, National Communications Director and National Campaign Manager. Candidates for the posts must be nominated by a unit of the Party in writing to the PUP Secretariat. Once the candidate accepts the nomination, their candidacy is official. The National Executive has set the deadline for this process as December 15, 2015. Should there be a need for voting, in the case of there being more than one candidate for any of the posts the convention will see 2,973 converge for elections. Otherwise, the national convention will be an endorsement. There has been a lot of talk of prospective candidates, not surprisingly, since the PUP is a Party of ca-

Male student alleges sexual assault Benque Viejo del Carmen, November 16, 2015 On Saturday 14th November 2015, at 11:52am, a 14year old male student of Benque Viejo Town accompanied by his mother reported that on Saturday, 14th November, 2015 at 7:30am, whilst sleeping in a sofa in the hall; he was awaken by someone touching his penis. Upon opening his eyes, he saw his step father nude and sitting on the sofa next to his foot and with his right hand touching his penis. He also stated that between the 24th and 31st October, 2015, during the course of the night while he was sleeping in the bedroom his step father went to his bed and also began touching his penis and gave him five dollars. Police detained the 40 year old step father pending charges of sexual assault.

pable and popular leaders but this will be made official only upon the receipt of formal nominations by the Secretariat. The campaign leading to and results of November 4th election in which

72.68% of the electorate casted their votes has made for scores of interesting analysis. The election was clearly neither fair nor free. The UDP’s gross abuse of Government resources to lure voters

03 3 was obvious to all. Even the OAS election observer team carrying out its mission in Belize expressed the need for campaign financing reform, and will likely cite the many election concerns in an impending full report. These are just some of the issues the next leader of the PUP, the seventh in its 65 years of existence, will have to prepare for. The good news is that the tens of thousands of PUP supporters are looking on with great enthusiasm. The PUP will rise again.

Woman injured after falling into man-hole downtown Belize City, November 16, 2015 A city resident sustained serious body injuries after she fell into a dangerous, unsealed man-hole. Witnesses heard the woman scream and saw when she suddenly fell into the man-hole. She sustained deep cuts on her feet and scrapes on her hand and body. The accident occurred downtown, along the usually busy, popular-for-shopping Orange Street. Drain man-holes left unsealed and unattended pose a serious threat to pedestrians. There are many of these reckless traps throughout the city; just waiting for an elderly citizen or a child to suffer a serious accident. Ensuring that these man-holes are properly covered is the responsibility of the Mayor and Councillors at the Belize City Council. But the Mayor is busy licking his wounds at his Lav-

Garifuna Settlement Day re-enactment in Belize City November 20, 2015 On Thursday November 19th, Belizeans celebrated the 213th anniversary of the arrival of the Garinagu people to Belize. This day is celebrated as Garifuna Settlement Day, and is a national holiday. On November 19th 1802, the Garinagu headed by national hero, Thomas Vincent Ramos, arrived in Belize seeking refuge, having been driven away from Honduras. While the main celebration activities are held in the culture capital, Dangriga, other towns and cities throughout the country have made it tradition to commemorate the day with special activities including a reenactment of the arrival of the Garinagu. In Belize City, The Garifuna Settlement re-enactment held along the banks of Haulover Creek. Mayor Darrell Bradley welcomed the delegation led by ex-BDF Domingo Lewis to the city, followed by a parade to the St. Martin’s RC church, where they were received by National Garifuna Council leader Sebastian Cayetano Sr, and their safe arrival was celebrated with a mass prayed in Garifuna. After the church service they paraded along Central American Boulevard unto Freetown Road for all-day festivities.

EDITORIAL The more things change…

T

he United Democratic Party has won its first third consecutive term in Government. But there is no euphoric feeling among Belizeans for our people know what a third UDP term means for the country. Just a few hours after learning that the UDP had ‘scraped’ a win, their leader was heard on live radio verbally attacking the media for daring to challenge his Government with the reporting of facts and true stories. Dean Barrow must have been referring to the scandals at the Immigration Ministry, or the reports of hustling at the Lands Ministry, the deaths of babies due to infections from poorly kept hospitals, or the discovery of rats at others – all pointing to corruption, mismanagement and incompetence throughout the eight-year, stunted two terms in Government. Barrow came off as if he was waging war on three media houses in particular. He has been allowed to get away with this kind of arrogant and manipulative behaviour over the past eight years, but in their third term it cannot be allowed to continue. A few minutes after learning that he had won in Belmopan, John Saldivar, a leading contender for UDP Leader in the next two years, was caught on camera practically wrestling away Police Officers who were about to detain one of his cronies, who in celebrating UDP victory lost his senses and shot his firearm into the air. Evidence caught on video does not lie. But if you ask the Prime Minister, Saldivar did nothing wrong. And the Police did, or in this

case did not do, what they thought was best when they followed Saldivar’s orders to release their suspect. A day after the election, at a press conference, PM Barrow showed little change of heart and care for issues when he fielded questions from the media. The PM showed no interest in much needed reforms. No 13th Senator, no adjustments to the Public Accounts Committee, or the moribund Integrity Commission. The PM spoke of new legislation to regulate the procurement of Government works contracts, but this comes after the fact that $300 million was blown away by his Party in the months leading to the elections without any form of real accountability. While confronting the media, Barrow admitted that the UDP coffers were “in excellent state” and “better than in 2012” which allowed greater latitude with their election spending. But was it really the UDP’s coffers or the people’s money? And how do Belizeans benefit from a Party in Government that has to abuse Government resources and buy votes to secure an election-win? Absolutely none at all. Dean Barrow has not been able to serve a full five-year term without having the need to ease an election itch. Although he wishes to see this third term actually last five years this time around, considering the reality of his ego-bloated little emperors in Cabinet, we suspect that Belizeans will have to be even more vigilant of the habits of the reckless personalities in his administration. Things will have to come to a head earlier than Barrow might want it. So it shall be. Power to the people!

Thinking Out Loud

Contributed The November 4th elections have come and gone. The UDP won...but was the election free and fair? More than that, was it played on a level playing field? Is our system skewed hopelessly toward the ruling Party? The answers are NO...NO and most certainly YES. The Dean Barrow administration spent $300 million dollars of Petrocaribe money between 2012 and 2015 - $100M a year. When the Prime Minister decided on the date for elections (and he knew the date long before it was announced) Petrocaribe money was literally pumped into constituencies on different levels. ONE – infrastructure like never before. Oh you need a cement street, well here goes. You need some drains there...okay no problem. A classroom, a sporting facility, some housing, some loads of sand – you name it, Petrocaribe roll it. TWO – Petrocaribe money was pumped into the hands of UDP candidates ONLY. Lupe Magana from Orange Walk South said it – her whole campaign after she won her convention was financed by Petrocaribe money thanks to the Prime Minister. She said it. THREE – Suddenly social assistance flooded into constituencies – groceries, money, education grants, social grants – ALL funnelled through UDP candidates ONLY. So where money was concerned, the playing field was certainly not level. The UDP had ALL access to Petrocaribe money and to taxpayers’ money to pay for their ads campaigns – produced at taxpayers’ expense for months before the election was called. But it goes deeper than that. The Elections & Boundaries Department is a government department. The Chief Elections Officer is selected by the UDP government and PAID FOR by the UDP government. Her livelihood depends on the UDP government. All that talk about proxies wasn’t just a fabrication. All that talk about voters being brought in from Guatemala to vote wasn’t a fabrication. THERE WAS FRAUD. Widespread. But that’s another story for another time.

And then there were the transfers. The UDP transferred voters from constituency to constituency as needed. A few hundred to Orange Walk East because it looks a little weak...a few hundred to Belmopan because John Saldivar needs all the help he can get. Let’s take some from Cayo South (we’ll lose that anyway) and send to Cayo Central, and even Freetown. In the end thousands of voters were moved around – AND NOBODY AT THE ELECTIONS AND BOUNDARIES OFFICE CARED, OR DARED TO VERIFY ADDRESSES. So can the UDP really, really stand up and boast of a convincing victory? A popular victory...a victory based on merit, quality of candidates and performance? HELL NO. Well, they can and have, but I’m sure the Prime Minister realizes that is a fallacy. IN A NUTSHELL, the UDP bought this election in every possible way, stacked the odds in their favour, ruthlessly intimidated, coerced and threatened voters and potential voters, used every government and taxpayer resource at their disposal, cheated, fought nasty and WON. For honourable people there should be no satisfaction in such a win, but no right-thinking individual has ever or will ever accuse the UDP of being an honourable organization. But no use crying over spilt milk...the games continue. ALL HAIL KING DEAN…HERE’S TO A THIRD TERM. The UDP is triumphant, victorious, but can the people of Belize claim any triumph? We saw the ads. Transforming Belize, I think. A Government for ALL, they said. It hasn’t been that way in the past seven or eight years. Does the UDP have any “change fu change?” How can you boast of being a government for all, when you repeatedly, nationally, tell voters that there will only be development and resources infused into areas with a UDP representative? Will that change? Will Dean Barrow, in his final term, change his legacy from dictatorship to true representation without fear or favour? We’ll just have to see, won’t we? Get yourselves ready, we have a strong feeling the WORST is YET to COME!

In the January Bye Election, the PUP had lost by 1,316 votes. The PUP lost Dangriga by 320 on November 4th. In the July Bye Election, the PUP had lost by 637 votes. The UDP looked bad in Orange Walk North as Gaspar Vega’s exceedingly safe margins were cut down by the PUP’s Ramon Monchi Cervantes. The PUP’s Said Musa won in Fort George handily, delivering his 8th victory – a historic mark in Belize’s electoral politics. The PUP’s Florencio Marin proved his political might in Corozal South East when he survived millions of dollars spent by the UDP on election day. PUP Leader Hon. Francis Fonseca won his 4th term in office trumping Carla Barnett despite all the electioneering in Freetown. PUP remains extremely popular in Southern Belize, winning Toledo East, Toledo West and Stann Creek West. The PUP gained two more seats in Belize City.

Grenada wants Caricom support for Sir Ronald Sanders November 8, 2015 The Grenada government is calling on Caribbean Community (Caricom) countries to support Sir Ronald Sanders, the Antigua & Barbuda diplomat for the post of Commonwealth Secretary General. The election will take place, in caucus, when Commonwealth Heads of Government meet in Valalia, Malta from November 27 to 29. Caricom countries are yet to choose between Sir Ronald and the Dominica nominee, Baroness Patricia Scotland, a former attorney general in Britain. Following their annual summit in Barbados earlier this year, Barbados Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, the present Caricom chairman, said the issue would have been dealt with at a meeting of the Caricom Bureau. But in a statement,

Mitchell, who is also the Chairman of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), said that he welcomed the declaration by the new Trinidad and Tobago government of its support for the Guyana-born Antigua diplomat. “After careful consideration of all pertinent aspects of the matter, it is the decision of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago to give its full support to the candidate of the Government of Antigua & Barbuda, who we believe is best placed to execute the responsibilities of the Office of Secretary General in a manner that would be a tribute to the Peoples of the Caribbean Community,” the government in Port of Spain said in a statement last

week. Mitchell, who is one of the longest serving Caricom leader, said “it is well known that the Government of Grenada supported the Antigua & Barbuda nominee from the outset, regarding him as a legitimate Caribbean candidate with the knowledge, experience and vision to invigorate the Commonwealth for the benefit of its peoples. Mitchell said that it is in the region’s interest to unite around Sir Ronald “ if our Caricom is serious about ensuring that one of our own becomes the next secretary general of the Commonwealth.

Human Services strips away 2 yr. old from Belizean mother at the “request” of Guatemalan authorities Belize City, November 16, 2015 The Human Services Department has had to go on defense mode, following strong public outcry over their decision to forcibly remove a two year old baby from her mother, a Belizean national, at the request of Guatemalan authorities. The child’s mother, Analiz Perez, turned to Facebook over the weekend to express deep pain and sorrow over a situation that transpired on Saturday, November 14th at her home in Orange Walk Town. Perez said that she was awaken that morning to the news that a woman who claimed to be a Social Services Officer of the Human Services Department and a Police Officer turned up at her house requesting to speak to her. Upon meeting the visitors, Perez was told by them that they were actually there to execute an order for her child, Nina, to be removed and placed in custody of Social Services. Perez said the woman identified herself as “Asin Sury”, which has turned out to be a false identity. After a period of resisting, Perez said she agreed go to the Human Development Office in Orange Walk Town where she would be given more information. After many hours of waiting however, Perez said she was ordered to leave the office and threatened with Police arrest if she remained. The officer, in the company of Police Officers, then took the child and left the office. Since then, six days ago, Perez has not been allowed to see her child. According to Perez, Nina was born in Guatemala. Her father is Guatemalan national, Ernesto Barrera Guzman, with whom Perez had a common-law relationship. The relationship broke apart and Perez said she turned to the court in Guatemala City to get full custody of her daughter, which was granted on March 4, 2015. Perez explained that she decided to move back to Belize so she could “enjoy the safety and protection of Belizean Law” and also to have the support of her family, but the decision to leave the Guatemalan jurisdiction, according to officials from Human Services Department, is why there is now controversy. In an interview earlier this week, Judith Alpuche, Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Human Development, explained that the Department in her Ministry got involved in response to “a request from the Guatemalan central authority” concerning the “wrongful removal” of Baby Nina. Alpuche, who appeared to have already chosen a side in this case, stated that “the child was wrongfully removed and brought into Belize”. In a case such as this, she added, the Human Services Department is the central authority and they must act based on international conventions to which Belize is a signatory. While Alpuche flaunted technical language to defend the Department’s actions, she did not accept that her De-

partment dealt with the matter in any wrong way. The child’s mother said her child had been basically kidnapped because no documentation was provided to her by the person who alleged to be a Human Services official. Also, when Perez investigated the identity of the person based on the name given, she found out she was given a false identity. Perez said the Department did not have to take away her baby, and to make matters worse, deny her any opportunity to see her daughter and ensure she was safe and secure. Alpuche rejected the accusations and said her Department has acted in “straight procedure”. Continued on page 18

Talk is cheap, votes aren’t By G. Michael Reid The 2015 General Elections are over and done with and in an ideal situation, the people would now close ranks, rally behind their leaders and forge ahead with the task of nation building. This is not an ideal situation. For that to happen, the winning party would also have to accept that they are a government for everyone and consider each and every citizen equal when dispensing goods and services. Not going to happen because we all know that it just does not work that way under our current system of governance. While it is a common sentiment that both parties, when in power, victimize members of their Opposition, (and while to some extent that is true), never has it been done so blatantly or acceptedly. Former Lake I representative Mark King put it succinctly when he openly proclaimed that in making considerations for anything, it was “UDP first, Belizeans second and PUP last”. In any other society, anyone affiliated with King’s party would have immediately distanced themselves from such a comment for to not do so would be tantamount to political suicide. Not only did anyone in King’s party condemn the comment but when confronted with the remarks, the Prime Minister seemed to give sanction to the statement. One would have hoped that the Prime Minister would have refuted the comment and rebuked King but when asked, he had only this to

His voice was heard distinctly issuing the command and the camera caught the look of dismay and helplessness on the faces of the Police officers. I believe that the Prime Minister missed an excellent opportunity to show that he would no longer tolerate misconduct by his subordinates but instead, flippantly dismissed the transgression and proceeded to reappoint Saldivar to the post of Minister of National Security. The more things change, the more they remain the same and indeed, “If nothing changes, nothing changes”. For their part, the People’s United Party must now regroup and rebound from yet another election loss. It was not easy being in Opposition for two terms and a third will be even more difficult to bear. Still, eight years is little compared to the thirty years that the UDP and their predecessor had to wander in the

Human Services strips away 2 yr. old from Belizean mother at the “request” of Guatemalan authorities Continued from page 8 On Monday, two days after taking Baby Nina, the Department applied to the Family Court for temporary custody, until the legal matter is properly vented. The court granted interim custody of the child for two months. Perez has obtained the legal services of attorney at law, Marcel Cardona. The case, while being

dealt with in court, has attracted tremendous public interest. In support of the mother and child, supporters have launched a Facebook page under the name “Bring Nina Home” which has attracted over 1,300 Likes in less than 48 hours. Many Belizeans have also expressed dismay at the actions of the Human Services Department.

One comment in particular, from well-known former Parliamentarian, Hector Silva, calls on the Department to defend our Belizean nationals at all costs. He explains that although Nina was born in Guatemala, because her mother is Belizean, the Constitution of Belize at Part III, Section 25 grants her Belizean nationality and so the Laws of Belize must protect her. The Constitution states: “Every person born outside of Belize ON or AFTER Independence Day, shall become a citizen of Belize at the DATE of his BIRTH, if, at that date his

father or mother is a CITIZEN of Belize”. “So I say LOUD and Clear, This baby is a Belizean and should not be deported to Guatemala. - This baby was born of a BELIZEAN MOTHER. - We are not bound by Guatemalan laws or Courts. - And our Constitution cannot be superseded by any GENEVA CONVENTION. - If it was so, this would have to form part of our Constitution at some Schedule. - I humbly request, - GIVE THAT BELIZEAN MOTHER HER BELIZEAN BABY,” expressed Don Hector in support of Baby Nina.

This corridor commences at approximately 7.5 miles on the George Price Highway and meanders in a northerly direction through properties in the Poor Man’s Rest Pine Ridge area to a point on the Southern bank of the Belize River where a bridge crossing will be constructed. From a point on the Northern bank of the Belize River the road will continue in a northerly direction to intersect the Airport Access Road at a point (in the vicinity of Gentrac), which is approximately 1 mile along the Airport Access Road to its intersection with the Phillip Goldson Highway. THINK ABOUT IT

POWER TO THE PEOPLE The great songwriters and singers of modern pop music, the Beatles, sang “Money Cant Buy Me Love”. This may or may not be true. But money can buy votes. That much is true. In Belize, money even buys voters. Or more precisely, money buys some voters. The recent general elections were basically a clash between power of money and the power to the people. This time money won. The lesson-much work needs to be done in informing and educating voters on how to turn the tables on wicked politicians who corrupt the democratic process by using money to swindle votes. The elections started to go corrupt three years ago when two important factors were introduced on a huge scale. The transfer of voters into targeted constituencies and the transfer of public funds into the hands of UDP politicians. Both are illegal but the UDP government and the corrupt UDP officials are one and the same so they got away with it. A few examples. In the Stann Creek West constituency, the UDP decided to transfer over six hundred UDP voters from other areas into the division to make sure the UDP candidate would win. Rodwell Ferguson, who was an easy win had to put up a massive fight and barely retained his seat by 8 votes. In the Belmopan constituency, although he is the incumbent and had won on two or three occasions, John Saldivar faced a serious challenge from new comer Patrick Andrews. Taking no chance Saldivar’s camp transferred hundreds of UDP voters from the adjoining constituency of Julius Espat’s constituency. Camalote, in particular. This allowed Saldivar to overcome Andrews by some 300 odd votes, even though the majority of the boxes were against Saldivar. Shortly after the election results, a gleeful Saldivar thanked Jesus for his win. Church people called that blasphemy. In the Freetown constituency, the UDP set out to ensure a Carla Barnett victory over Francis Fonseca. Francis had beaten millionaire Douglas Singh in 2003, beat lawyer Michael Peyrefitte in 2008, and beat multi-millionaire Chinese businessman Lee Mark Chan in 2012. Using, or rather abusing taxpayers monies by the millions and corrupting the transfer of voters swindle, the UDP placed hundreds of voters, many from Port Loyola, to ensure a Carla Barnett victory. She took a drumming. Lost by over 400 votes. The real loss is to the people of Belize and their hard earned tax monies. The Prime Minister since 2012 had started to secretly spend Petro Caribe monies on projects in targeted constituencies and allowing UDP politicians and standard bearers to go around claiming the personal and political credit. In a constituency like Belize Rural Central, the standard bearer could decide who will work on public roads project and who will not. Only UDP supporters get jobs, get benefits and the many handouts. How does this work? It would mean that hand-picked “contractors” would have to be told to bloat the cost of a project to accommodate dozens of extra workers in order for a politician to send voters for jobs.

THE BELIZE TIMES

Cementing a street for example would require a cement mixer and ten workers. Instead forty, fifty workers are seen standing around each cement street project. There are no public tenders for these projects. There are no invoices and no accountability for the spending of public monies from the national budget or the Petro Caribe monies from Venezuela. In Belize City, this type of illegal behavior had gone viral. The Mayor since 2012 had borrowed twenty million dollars. The government pushed a further twenty million dollars on him to do cement streets. The government also had a Southside Poverty Alleviation project from overseas loan for sixty million dollars. Today, all these millions are gone and very little to show for it. In the case of the Venezuelan monies from Petro Caribe, the Prime Minister spent over three hundred million dollars. There is very little to show for it and there is no detail accounting on the multitude of projects and swindles that took place. So the UDP won. It was all for the ego of one man. Dean Barrow has got his third term in government and to hell with the people and the best interest of Belize. Belize is now broke, in more ways than we care to mention. Democracy has been subverted. The same incompetent and corrupt government with the same Ministers is back in office. Many getting the same portfolio over which they had performed so abysmally in the process of ruining of beloved Belize. The country is deep in debt and the budget is busted. The power of money was on full display on Election Day. Fifty dollars to wear a red shirt. One hundred dollars to stand around polling stations. Two hundred dollars to vote UDP and the balance of two hundred more once the candidate won. Five thousand dollars for a street captain to undermine the PUP candidate on election day. Truth forces us to acknowledge that the vast majority of UDP supporters, like PUP and Belizeans everywhere, are good decent people. It is the small percentage of the desperate and vulnerable poor people who have been manipulated to sell their votes. The UDP government has bankrupted the country to win the election. They got 50.06 percent of the votes. The PUP got 47 percent and the new third party got 1.73 percent. The man in charge of the government is legendary for being a petty and malicious person. His legacy is winning elections. That and nothing more. Our government is broken. Our institutions in decay and our people have no future; poverty is endemic and hopelessness has emerged. GAPI GET IT Gapi got demoted and Elodio got dissed. Elodio Aragon resigned as Deputy Commissioner of Police and went campaigning for general elections. This is the proper thing for public official to do and may have caused the Mayor of Belize to lose votes by insisting he will collect his pay as Mayor while abandoning his duty in the city in order to campaign for general elections. We have no doubt he has paid himself salary for September and Octo-

ber, when he was out campaigning and not on the job. Elodio won his seat. He was made a junior Minister, and even though he has Police experience and a degree in criminology, the PM dissed him by not giving him the Ministry of Police and BDF where he is more than knowledgeable and qualified to make a serious contribution. Gapi Vega, Deputy Prime Minister who along with millions of Petro Caribe dollars was able to oversee the UDP won five seats in Orange Walk and Corozal. This sealed the UDP victory and gave Dean Barrow his third term. The PUP was counting on four or five of the eight seats up north to bring in their victory. Didn’t happen. Gapi, who since 2008 was Minister of Lands and Petroleum, was demoted and disrespected big time. He was made a junior Minister for the Forest and a dwindling fish stock. Officially he is the Minister of Fish and Forest; agriculture has been added to make it sound important. Truth of the matter is Gapi is the Minister of nothing. Barrow has disrespected Gapi Vega big time. It’s over for Gapi. Or is it? Gapi and three others can bring down the government. Barrow has spent the most of the Petro monies in Freetown and must be aware of the massive voter transfer in a major effort to get Carla Barnett elected. The over kill backfired. But Barrow favors Barnett over Gapi, Faber and Saldivar to take over the party. Carla could go to Queen’s Square but that is being saved for Anwar. Looks like Boots will take a walk and with a re-transfer of voters back into Port Loyola, a seat could be carved for Carla. And where is Sedi in all this? Did you hear the Prime Minister praising him as the second most brilliant man, the second most intellectual person and the second most outstanding diplomat? You would think Sedi was going to be the next UDP leader and Prime Minister. Perish that thought. Sedi is being set up for a Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of Queen Elizabeth the Second, Granted to Colonial persons for doing the dirty work of the British Government. Dem things is high honors, Belizeans. High honors. Comes with a large parchment, 2 feet by 3 feet type Declaration starting with Hear Ye, Hear Ye and ending with the Great Seal of the British Realm. There is a thick medal shaped like a star with millions in red, white and blue. Sedi should be working with the African, Caribbean and Latin Countries to take the British to the I.C.J. to have them pay compensation to Guatemala for not building an agreed the cart road. Instead, Sedi and his Prime Minister are working with the British and Guatemala to take Belize to the I.C.J. for Belize to give away land and sea. JASMINE BAIZA We need a little good news. Here it is. The popular television show-Love & Hip Hop- Hollywood is one of the most watched shows by teenagers in Belize. On this Monday night’s series all eyes were glued to VH1 on cable TV as Belizean beauty JASMINE BAIZA made an appearance. She led the line-up of models who were being featured in that segment. Jasmine has been featured in couple of Tanya Carter’s music videos and to get a small part in the hugely popular Love & Hip Hop is a sign she may be heading for stardom. We hope so.

2015

We are proud of you Jasmine Baiza. “FIRST OF THE STORM” “Let France and those who walk in its path know that they will remain on top of the lists of targets of the Islamic State”. So read a part of a release from ISIS following the series of attacks by terrorists in Paris on Friday 13th November. Some 129 persons were killed and 350 injured. France almost immediately ordered the bombings of ISIS targets in Syria. France has been one of the most active in bombing ISIS in Iraq and Syria for the past many months. Russia, which started bombing ISIS as well, has suffered a devastating retaliation. ISIS claims they planted a homemade bomb on a Russian plane, bringing it down over Egypt two weeks ago and killing all 224 passengers. President Obama has been reluctant to get involved in another war but the attack on Paris has brought out all the war mongers in the USA. Even Donald Trump is being taken seriously. War is coming. And who the heck is ISIS? MOST SENSATIONAL Against all odds, against millions of Petro dollars and cement streets kickback. Even attacks against his last name, Kareem Musa pulled off the most sensational upset of the general elections. Mayor Darrel Bradley was riding a high horse. His campaign slogan was “Keep the Vision Alive”. Was that the vision of more concrete streets without accountability? What a proud hombre. Pride preceedeth a fall. And what a fall he took. Congrats Kareem. We expect great things from you. BELOVED SON Lake Independence showed its love for its beloved son. Cordel Hyde won by the biggest margin in the whole general elections. He knocked the despicable and immature Mark King clean out of the ring by a margin of 2000 voters. The little man with the big mouth who was going to “get rid of Evan X Hyde, and Mose Hyde, and Kremandala and Cordel Hyde”.The people of Lake I got rid of him. Big respect Cordel! USHER THE CRUSHER Gilroy Usher Sr., the quiet, humble businessman was willing to pawn some of Boots jewelry. He crushed Boots’ boasting and over inflated ego by bringing him to his senses. Gilbert almost won against a man who mysteriously got millions of dollars and dozens of mansions from the sale of pool tables. The people of Port Loyola were voting out Boots and his arrogant self-hustling self. If a third candidate didn’t take away 96 votes from Usher, Boots would have been completely crushed. Usher will win in Port Loyola next election. KING REQUENA Oscar Requena has shown he is the dynamic force from the South. This outspoken champion of his people and the down-trodden Maya has been a breath of fresh air in the National Assembly, for his people and for what is righteous. Oscar is a genuine leader and now the whole nation knows it.

THE BELIZE TIMES

Free Zone businessman executed in Chetumal Ernesto Alonso de Miguel was considered Mexico’s “Contraband Zar”

Corozal District, November 16, 2015 Ernesto Alonso de Miguel, a Mexican national known as “El Espanol” who operated a business inside the Corozal Free Zone, was shot dead in an execution-style attack along the popular Chetumal bay, just before midnight on Saturday, November 14, 2015. Miguel was at the “El Emporio” restaurant, having dinner with a group that included a Commandant in Chetumal’s Police Force, Augustin Guevara Martinez, another Police official, an unidentified Belizean who was his driver and two women, when a motorcycle stopped on the street and a gunman alighted, firing in their direction. Martinez was also fatally wounded in the attack, while the others survived by diving to the floor. The news of the murder has sent shockwaves in Chetumal and Corozal Town. For many years, Miguel was allegedly involved in nefarious business out of the Free Zone. He was accused of smuggling contraband liquor into Mexico via secret routes along the border with Belize. In November 2005, Miguel reportedly escaped a kidnapping at-

tempt carried out by members of the Zeta cartel. He moved to Belize, and had since reportedly turned his business place into his residence. Miguel is alleged to be the only businessman allowed to live in the confines of the Free Zone. In 2011, Miguel was the target of a Police operation in an attempt to ar-

rest him. He came under heavy fire by armed Police officials but escaped unhurt. During the shooting, the Police mistakenly shot a deputy chief of the Police, Jorge Amir Flota Matos. Reliable sources indicate that Miguel was a key financial supporter of the United Democratic Party in the Corozal District.

UDP Humpty Dumpty’s Farewell

Belize City, November 17, 2015 “Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall…Humpty Dumpty had a great fall” The UDP’s Humpty Dumpty, an irrational and immature politician who landed in Lake Independence by mistake three years ago, has been rightfully ejected by the power of the people. In keeping true to his silly behaviour, Mr. Humpty Dumpty decided to say farewell to the people of Lake I in a very strange manner after the elections. Check it out for yourself in the attached image as the wanna-be politician known for suicidal comments such as “UDP first, Belizeans second”, took to Facebook and accepted his political funeral but claimed that he will rise from the dead.
