Faringdon Business Breakfast Club Our meeting on 19th August was a ‘first’ in that we joined with Wantage and District Business Breakfast Club for a combined breakfast at The Snooty Mehmaan just outside Faringdon. Considering that the meeting took place in the middle of the popular summer holiday season there was a fantastic turnout. Although Faringdon was quite significantly ‘out-numbered’ by Wantage we put up a brilliant show and more than held our own. Many of us were anticipating a ‘Full-Indian’ cuisine but many were equally happy to see the traditional ‘Full-English’ available. I can only report that the Indian alternative was very tasty and possibly a lot healthier than the English, although that is probably going to be the subject of another medical 360 degree change of opinion in the not too distant future. Each of the Clubs gave a brief introduction about their own organisation before Jeanette House from Wantage (who were ‘hosts’) opened a session of business card bingo, where previously collected business cards were drawn randomly from a bowl in order for that individual to talk about their proudest moment followed by exactly one minute about their own business. FOLLYFEST 2015, did that lift the spirit of Faringdon or what? Well done to the team that produced a most memorable weekend. Thank you to the businesses that sponsored it, provided goods, services or made donations to enable the FollyFest team to showcase such a fantastic event. For those of you suffering festival withdrawal symptoms you will be pleased to hear that the Faringdon Beer Society are hosting Faringdon’s inaugural “Bangers and Beer” festival on Friday 18th and Saturday 19th September. Over the last few years the Chamber of Commerce has been involved with long term strategies for the town; the Neighbourhood Plan, an economic development strategy and a business prospectus, to name a few. At the same time we need to keep focused on the support and development and immediate needs of our town’s businesses. That’s not just the town centre retail faces we know and love but the SOHOs (Small Office/Home Office) and rural out of town businesses. The Chamber cannot do this without input from you. There are some large grants becoming available for projects to assist towns like ours to develop and prosper. Faringdon has the support of the Councils; town, district and county, but they too need our input as to what we want. The Chamber of Commerce has created a survey, which all businesses are invited to take part in. This will be used to help the Chamber of Commerce understand the direction needed to help all businesses achieve their goals and those of the town. You will also be aware of the proposed changes in the Sunday trading regulations for larger retail stores which could come into effect soon.

There has been a veritable explosion of micro distilleries setting up in the last few years that in size and production capacity hark back to the old days of farm distilleries. However, to see what a truly authentic traditional farm distillery is like then one of the best places to visit must be Edradour in the Southern Highlands. First mention of this extremely picturesque distillery was made in 1837, although it had existed in some form as part of a farmer’s distilling co-operative a decade or so before, and this tiny distillery is still housed in its original buildings. Set in rolling farmland not far from Pitlochry, with its white washed buildings, red painted doors and woodwork, and stream running through the middle of the site it still gives the appearance of being a farm. Touring the distillery is like taking a trip back in time. The open mash tun is so small you could be mistaken for thinking that the staff have a luxury hot tub on site, and the Morton Refrigerator used to cool the wort from the mash tun is reputedly the only one of its type left in use in a Scottish distillery (the wort runs through pipes in a large tank which has cold water in it and looks like it would not be out of place on a dairy farm). The washbacks and stills are Lilliputian in comparison to Diageo’s Blair Athol distillery just a few miles away in Pitlochry, and the worm tubs that cool and recondense the alcohol vapours from the stills are amongst the very few surviving in Scotland and would fit many times over into the giant ones to be seen at Dalwhinnie distillery. The result of this small scale approach is that the spirit created comes into contact with copper far more than it would in a bigger distillery, which helps to reduce sulphur compounds and off notes and produces a light, pure, fresh spirit. When matured this translates into a honeyed, spicy, malty, nutty, fruit cake style of whisky with hints of smoke. The 10 year old in their range showcases these flavours beautifully and is one of those hidden gems people come back to time and again once they’ve discovered it. The 12 year old special edition ‘Caledonia’ adds even more richness and would make an interesting choice for those who enjoy sherry cask whiskies as it is matured in oloroso cask, with vanilla and toasty butteriness combining with Christmas fruits, spices and pecans in a bold, warming whisky. Edradour also produce a range of wine matured and ‘finished’ whiskies too numerous to mention here but worth exploring if you enjoy that style of whisky. All in all, Edradour may be small in size and output but it’s big on flavour and personality!

Well, we are now over half way through the year, the sun is out and it is time to make plans for the autumn! So here are a few more suggestions to take you through to Christmas! As before, these races cater for all, whether you be someone looking for their first 10k or a speed-demon looking for that elusive “PB”. Almost all of these events are within half an hour’s drive of Faringdon. There isn’t much road racing on over the summer holidays, but when the schools go back you suddenly find yourself spoilt for choice. The popular Cotswold Classic 10 mile race is on Sunday 20th September. This is a challenging event, but don’t let the hills put you off, the scenery makes up for it and of course what you go up, you have to come down. It sets off at 10:30am and this year is over a new course. For details go to http://www.witneyroadrunners.co.uk/cotswoldclassic/ On the same day it is the Longworth 10k. The course is off road through beautiful Oxfordshire country side and alongside the River Thames. There is complete fixture congestion in October when there are three great half marathons – the Cricklade Half Marahon on 5th is a hidden gem – for a start it is three races rolled into one; as well as the main event there is a fun run and a 10k. This race is truly flat and almost totally on quiet country road. Download the entry form at http://www.crickladefunrun.co.uk/ A week later on 12th, both Swindon and Oxford stage their 13.1 mile events, which are in stark contrast to each other; the Oxford half is a big city race and this year is on a new course entirely in the town centre. Register at http://oxfordhalf.co.uk/ The Swindon half sets off from near the Nationwide HQ (which provides plenty of free parking) and follows a route heading out of the town eventually finding itself on the Ridgeway for a mile or so. There is a fun run alternative (2km) as well as a “multi-terrain” race over 5km. The pick of these is probably the Eynsham 10k, which is popular with local clubs and fills up fast. This year it is on Sunday 29th November. Jolly SeptemberRamblings! | The Advertiser | page 7 | A big welcome to my September ramblings, with the grain harvest well under way as I write, yet the blackberries are still only in flower. What price I wonder, and how many dairy farmers less, will there be when we buy the milk to make the custard for our blackberry and apple crumbles? It is also the season for music, indoors and outdoors, with musical festivals in the countryside, as scattered about in Oxfordshire, or in the City parks twinned with those concerts in the Royal Albert Hall , the BBC Proms. To keep in tune with these celebrations, may I invite Confucius into the conversation, as he has said that “the right kind of music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without.” Confucian music is considered a useful form of self-cultivation, self-expression, a force for social stability and a medium of communication between man, nature and supernatural powers. This Chinese philosopher also says that “everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it”. So, I’m off to the operating theatre and the current controversy of music in our theatres. Scientists and behavioural therapists are working on how to assess when a cow is happy, an important aspect of welfare equal to good food, water and general health. We’ve surely all seen films of cows being turned out on to grass after a winter period of housing, running and kicking heels, briefly head-to-head, digging the grass with any horns that they may have and also moo-ing in a very different way. The ability to judge happiness is now being based on ear position, amount of white in the eyes and also the temperature of their noses. If I am able to get any moos about the results of all this study, I’ll pass it on! All this is of great relevance to the following: Summer brings out all the stats from the USA – yes, over one year, cows can kill 20 people, including farm workers and farmers, compared to one person a year each from bears, alligators and sharks, but, through the shocking stat that dogs have killed 28 US people per year on average, top of the list will be deaths through bees, wasps and hornets, unfortunately – at 58 per year (2001-2013). Working with large animals on farms means the necessity of learning to safely interact with and around them and to pick-up all the signals well ahead, through training, experience, health and safety – clues that these powerful, fast, protective animals are NOT happy, especially around calving and mating. With some recent really hot weather and very little wet, wet, wet…what about heatstroke of pets in cars? The latest RSPCA appeal is for any member seeing a dog that they think is in distress in a hot car (windows open makes little difference) is to ring 999. It IS exactly THAT serious, so much starts to go wrong as soon as the body temperate passes a threshold level. Organ failure can be slow, insidious and fatal. Heart-breaking, and totally UNNECESSARY. Please always think it through before any journey, despite air con, and before exercising your dog at all, check the expected hotter times of the day…. If you suspect your pet needs treatment, immediately contact your practice before driving there ,so that they can get things ready before your arrival. DIGEST THIS Do we ever stop to consider what happens when we eat? As soon as we put food or drink into our mouth a process starts to digest or prepare food for digestion straight away. The fascinating world of what goes on in the body when we eat our food often gets taken for granted. When we see something we want to eat there are lots of ways our bodies check and process the food. Ÿ our eyes signal to the brain to prepare for the onslaught Ÿ our nose takes a sniff to check all is well and adds to the information needed to keep us well Ÿ our mouth produces saliva to help us swallow the food Ÿ our tongue does a taste test to check out the foods to sense whether they might be ‘off’ Ÿ our stomach produces digestive enzymes to help with the breaking down process Ÿ our small intestine will squeeze the food to get out the nutrients Ÿ the gut bacteria in the large intestine will process the last morsels of nutrients maximising the most from our food Ÿ our rectum allows us to eliminate what is no longer needed along with old gut bacteria, indigestible fibre and any ‘toxic’ waste that should no longer be in the body Not to mention the other important organs like the liver and kidneys! Pretty much everything we eat comes from living things. What we eat gets broken down into sugar molecules, fats and amino acids by our digestive enzymes. Some foods take a little more work than others to be broken into small pieces that can then be absorbed into the bloodstream, from where they are transported all around the body. Sugar is broken down easily and can make our blood very sweet which stimulates insulin to regain a healthy balance. Sugar is our body’s preferred choice of fuel but too much of it means we store it for leaner times by converting it into fat - which it can do with little effort! And we all know what that means – weight gain. Beware – most processed foods contain added sugar! Fat contains twice as much energy per gram than that of carbohydrates (sugars) or protein. Our nerves are coated in fat and important hormones in the body are comprised of fat too. Because it is so important our body likes to hold onto it at almost any cost. Unlike other nutrients fat that is absorbed into the blood via the small intestine is sent to the lymphatic system where it heads for the heart. It is eventually pumped around the body. Remember that when you next eat a cheap sausage! That fat goes through the heart first even before the liver can detox it! Good quality fats like extra virgin olive oil, linseed or hempseed oil can actually protect us from diseases and help reduce inflammation and can also, it seems, reduce the sensation of pain in our body. Amino acids (proteins) are digested in our small intestine; they go to make up our DNA and are present in every cell. Plants construct different proteins from animals and these are known as incomplete proteins. Vegetarians therefore have to mix different foods to get a complete protein that you would get from meat or fish. Beans with bread, pasta with cheese, hummus with oatcakes all give us a complete balance. We generally eat a limited range of proteins from meat but just remember you can get protein from plants and fish too. Did you know saliva contains a tiny painkiller called opiorphin? Our body is a fascinating, complex structure that we need to take care of. We often ignore our digestive system, expecting everything we eat to be dealt with without any effort. But in these modern days where we can eat as much as we like as well as what we like 24/7, we put a massive strain on our digestion. Be kind to it in the future appreciate it and sometimes give it a rest – you will feel better for it!

BATHROOM SHOWROOM Open to the Public & Trade Come September, many of us have had a summer holiday, although it then seems to be an age gone past. But we still seem to have the spirit of where we went remaining in our hearts. And simple triggers like food can transport us back in a split second to those halcyon days of laziness! Sadly we seem to have had a summer that has not been conducive to Al fresco eating, but we can live in hope for a wonderful Indian summer. Cooler evenings but beautiful pink tinged late afternoons and early nights. I really love difference in food, like Salty sweet or sweet and sour. But one I love the most is warm and cold. A perfect combo in European eating. It is so delicious to eat a hot risotto alongside a green salad of rocket and watercress, dressed with a little mustard dressing. Incidentally, to make a dressing is simple, place a couple of heaped teaspoons of Dijon mustard into a jar with 150ml oil, 2 tbsp water, a generous squeeze of lemon juice and some seasoning, replace the lid then shake like mad. Et voila, you will have a great dressing that will keep for weeks. Ring the changes by adding honey or using red wine vinegar perhaps. Or ice cream, with just made warm chocolate sauce poured over it. The two work very well. So visualise the Indian summer and get this recipe of a salad with a warm topping on the go. Break up the lettuce combination that you love and place it on to the plates you like. Either a large serving plate or individual dinner plates. Add the bits to make a mixed salad. Beetroot, tomatoes, cucumber, celery, sweetcorn, pine nuts, herbs, onion. Just get mixing! Add quartered boiled eggs too. Warm a large pan adding a goodly amount of oil, around 50ml per person, be it olive or rapeseed. Don't be alarmed with the amount, it is going to be the salad dressing Cut up bacon in to bite size pieces and fry in the hot pan until just cooked. Add a handful per person of cooked shredded chicken or indeed salami and a chopped clove of garlic. SautĂŠ for another few minutes until, everything is beginning to crispen then squeeze in the juice of a lemon. Season with black pepper and stir all together well. Spoon over the salad whilst still piping hot and serve with crusty bread. Oh, and don't forget a glass of vino too! Great Gewürztraminer Ge - wer - what - you may be wondering? This white wine has a few perceived stumbling blocks that need to be cast aside. It bears a bit of a tricky name to begin with (it's pronounced ga-vertz-trah-meen-ur), well up there in the pronunciation stakes with the likes of pouilly-fumé and falanghina. Secondly, it is usually off-dry to sweet, with pronounced exotic fruit flavours; lychees, ripe white peaches and white blossom with rosewater sometimes even topped off with Turkish Delight! Then there's the presentational element - it often comes in old-fashioned tall green bottles, and if it’s from Germany or Alsace in eastern France it might have a label with Victorian style Gothic script. All the above form the reasons as to why I am such a devotee of this wine. Plus it matches brilliantly with spicy food, of which I am also a major fan. Gewürztraminer (the prefix gewürz means spicy in German, a reference to its ground-ginger, and light floral notes) is a stunning match for certain dishes: spiced white fish (or try the Lamb & Flag's Sea Bass red curry - divine!), Thai curries with coriander, coconut milk and lemon-grass; Chinese sweet-and-sour chicken; or smoked and strongly flavoured cheeses. Gewürztraminer is grown widely throughout the world Spain, Slovenia, Italy, Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary and France. In the New World, the grape is greatly successful in New Zealand, some parts of Australia and in the Mendoza region of Argentina. Price wise, a premium can be paid for the best examples from the highly acclaimed Alsace region of France. However, I have tracked down a fabulous example at an even more fabulous price point! 'G' Gewurtztraminer 2014 Rheinhessen, Germany Lidl £5.49 Pale lemon in appearance, with aromas of lychees, honey-dew melon, white blossom, honeysuckle and white pepper. On the palate, this wine has flavours of apple blossom, more lychees, runny honey, with a lime zest finish. This wine is off-dry and will match brilliantly with Thai food and other spicy dishes. 2015 is the 75th anniversary the Home Guard, formed on 14 May 1945 when invasion seemed imminent. The Wiltshire Home Guard re-enactment group portrays Home Guard activities including drill, weapons recognition and UXB disposal. Life on the Home Front is represented by several static displays and portrayals, including Women’s Land Army, Police and ARP. We encourage public participation and questions. It’s that time of year again, when the summer starts to draw to a close, the nights draw in, and our thoughts might begin to turn towards picking up a new hobby to while away those dark, wintry evenings – and what better hobby to choose than Bell ringing? Bell ringing, or Campanology as you might know it, is an almost uniquely English pastime and is a real team exercise. Here in Faringdon we have eight bells, and that means that when you hear us ringing there are eight bell ringers all working together to make the distinctive music that we call English Change Ringing. What makes bell ringing in England, and indeed the rest of Britain, so special and so different from anywhere else is that we ring our bells, which can weigh anything from sixteen ounces to just over four tons and be up to seven hundred years old, one after the other and in different orders to make pretty sounding tunes, or ‘changes’– hence the term ‘Ringing the changes’! Learning to ring is a social activity, and in becoming a ringer you’ll be joining an enthusiastic, friendly group of people continuing a tradition now in its fifth century, and what’s more, ringing makes for excellent gentle exercise. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need the strength of Samson, the musical skill of a concert violinist, to be religious, or have to bounce up and down like monks with Mars bars. All that’s required is that you’re free on a Monday evening and that you’d like to try something new. Our practice night is on Mondays at 19.30 and we ring before the church service on Sunday. Backpacks without back pain! It’s BACK-TO-SCHOOL time! One large part of school shopping is often a new backpack, although few are aware of the dangers of developing spine and muscles problems due to backpacks being too heavy or used incorrectly. Studies have revealed that backpacks weighing more than 15 percent of a child’s body weight put the child at risk of chronic back pain, shoulder pain, back and neck strain, and potential long-term spinal damage. Back pain is endemic in our society, figures from the British Chiropractic Association found that almost 95% of us will suffer from it at some point in our lives, and 50% of us will be suffering from low back pain this year alone! Much of this suffering is brought on by bad habits we picked up during our younger years – such as carry overweight backpacks to school. So what can you do? Here are some of my bag carrying tips; · Can your child lift up the backpack with one outstretched arm off a chair or table without too much effort? · Try to get one with individual compartments to spread the load of the weight more evenly · It’s really important to carry the backpack using BOTH straps, looking cool and using only one strap can cause all kinds of mechanical problems for the body and unnecessary pain and discomfort · Make sure the straps are adjustable and nicely padded and feel soft and comfortable on the shoulders, the backpack should not extend more than 4 inches below the waistline · Ultimately, if the weight of the backpack is still a problem, getting a locker at school can be helpful so at least the books don’t have to be lugged around for the whole of the school day. I look after younger ones as well so give me a call if you’re worried about your child’s back or if they are complaining about aches and pains. You might be saving them from years of discomfort. Continued from page 3. It was not 59 or 61 seconds but exactly one minute and even if you were in mid-sentence you were timed out by the referee!…. It was different, enjoyable and interesting to ‘Network with Neighbours’ and definitely something that we will examine as the basis for meeting other networking groups around us. A big thanks to Wantage District Business Breakfast Club for organizing this event and a return ‘fixture’ will be held at Sudbury House Hotel in 2016.
