See how the management of our natural areas are benefitting birdlife and learn some of the management techniques used in the new Meadow Garden for migratory and resident species. We will review some of the key species with audio/visuals in the classroom and learn more about their habitat preference, ecological niche, and natural history. Later, we will move outside to gain first-hand skills to assist with the identification of meadow and edge species by sight and sound during the height of the fall songbird migration. Please bring binoculars and a bird field guide, if you have them. Cameras are also encouraged. See related courses, pages 34 and 49.

Through a combination of classroom discussion and outdoor exploration, we will get a feel for the water cycle and gain a deeper understanding of water in its various forms and locations. Coverage will include streams, wetlands, aquatic life, watersheds, precipitation, infiltration, runoff, groundwater, and evapotranspiration. We will discuss why water is so essential and why it is becoming an increasingly scarce resource. Join us as we lay some key hydrologic groundwork in the classroom and then go outside to use Longwood’s varied grounds as the backdrop for an interpretive, interactive walk to discover obvious and not-so-obvious places where water resides. Come prepared to dive into our subject and perhaps get a little wet.
