WELCOME Hello, Welcome to Lakeshore Living, a new magazine about fine homes and fine living. Our area is one of the most desirable locations in the country and Lakeshore Living explores some of the secrets that make this a great community. In this issue, we feature exciting new home and condominium developments, a spectacular interior and some of the most talented professionals in our midst. I have been selling real estate in the Oakville and Burlington areas for more than 20 years and I am constantly amazed and energized by the creative people I have the pleasure of meeting. Their passion is inspiring and so I wanted to launch this magazine as a means of telling their stories, to introduce you to some of the influential and talented people who work and live in our community. Our area has some of the most beautiful homes in the country and I’m excited by the prospect of giving you a peek into these gorgeous properties. A community, of course, is more than homes and streets. It encompasses the compassion that exists through our philanthropic endeavours – the acts of kindness and giving that make ours a better place to live. In Lakeshore Living we have highlighted some of our worthy causes and charitable events that are designed to care for the sick and less fortunate here at home. In this issue we give a mention to Big Brothers Big Sisters and Comic Vision, two organizations that I have a deep fondness for and to which I have made significant commitments. The character of a town or city is defined by the number of caring and giving people and I’m proud that the Dan Cooper Team can be counted among our generous citizens by providing support for a number of local organizations, services and programs. I hope you enjoy the inaugural issue of Lakeshore Living.

Dan Cooper Sincerely,

>> A Morning with Ron MacLean. I had the pleasure of spending a Saturday morning with Ron MacLean, host of Hockey Night in Canada. Ron is a proud Oakville resident and loves this town. In fact, I sold Ron his first home when he moved to Oakville, so it was great to hook up with him again and talk about what makes this community special. You can see his story on page 21.

CAM ROB JACKSON BURTON Overlooking pristine Lake Ontario with 23 kilometres of uninterrupted public-access shoreline and the magnificent Niagara Escarpment as our backyard, Burlington is a great community to live and work. Our success has been our commitment to managed growth, sound fiscal stewardship, and environmental sustainability providing a high quality of life for our citizens. We have emerged as one of the greenest and healthiest cities in Ontario, known for its values, vision and progressive planning, the fourth best city in Canada. (MoneySense magazine, 2009).

As we enter a new decade, people wonder what the next 10 years will bring. In Oakville, we have a vision for our future. It’s clear: to become the most livable town in Canada. In 2009, we took a big step toward achieving that goal by approving Livable Oakville, the town’s new official plan, which sets out how the town will accommodate 90,000 new people by 2031 while protecting established neighbourhoods and controlling growth. I expect that 2010 will be Oakville’s greatest year yet, and I encourage you to follow our progress through our newsletter, Let’s Talk Oakville, or online at www.oakville.ca/m-accomplishments.htm.

CHOOSING FINE ART FOR YOUR HOME OR OFFICE

Fine art is a personal journey. And while it is important to purchase help you make smart choices. Lakeshore Living asked Harbour Gallery Associate Director Jenna Bryant for advice about

Q. What is the most important consideration when buying original art? A. If you are buying for pleasure, then buy a painting that you love. Sounds overly simple, but it is essential to make an emotional connection to art you buy especially for your home. We find exposing clients to the work of many artists is effective in helping them discern their personal taste. Q. How will I know what suits my space? A. The best solution is to try a few paintings in your space for a week or two so you can see the image in varying light conditions. Wall colour, glare from windows, ceiling heights and mouldings affect the way an image is viewed. Equally, consider the ideal scale of a work in any chosen space. Q. How can I tell if a painting is worth the asking price? A. A gallery should be able to justify the stated value through an active history of sales for the artist at the current market value. Also, ask for proof that the value of the artist's work has appreciated over time. If a gallery has to discount a work to sell it that is not a good sign and indicates the work is overvalued. Art is usually priced per square inch so there is uniformity across size and different markets for the work of the same artist. Q. Do I have to frame original artwork? That is a personal choice and often depends on how best to show the painting in a specific environment. For works on canvas, a frame can enhance a

work. Good framing supports an image allowing the viewer to visually enter into a painting and linger. Frames drawing too much attention away from the art are not ideal. The simplicity of an unframed canvas can be appealing in a contemporary space.

in highly customized, luxury renovations and “new-builds” amid the patrician residences of the Lakeshore throughout the GTA. “Our clients want very personal, bespoke design” says Sturrock, the owner and principal designer. “Many come to the initial design meeting with a bulging folder of images they’ve culled from various publications, and often there is a scattershot of ideas represented. And that’s okay – it’s our job to distill their ideas into a workable, integrated and uniquely personal design. Ours is a couture approach that expertly tailors the personal specifications of our clients with the architectural integrity of the home.”

For Sturrock, a well-designed home goes beyond immediate visual appeal to evoke an emotional response – a profound sense of wellbeing and comfort. It is based on an intrinsic understanding of space, balance, proportion and form and the symbiotic entwining of the human element with its environment. “This holistic direction results in well-designed, luxurious, yet “real” living spaces for our clients, infused with their spirit and incorporating all the things which make them happy.”

“Good design evolves from a dynamic, undiluted artistic vision rather than a slavish adherence to rules and trends. For instance, it was a longstanding trend in kitchen design to pair light perimeter cabinets with a contrasting, dark island, often with a different stone countertop as well. I wanted to wrap the entire kitchen in a warm white so that all the architectural elements would have a sculptural feel, so instead of the ubiquitous contrasting island, we made an interesting feature out of the refrigerator door. We wanted to evoke old French farmhouse architecture and to that end we paired rustic panel moldings and carvings with antique hinges and door handles, and painted and patinaed the

whole to a softly weathered grey. It’s a beautiful feature, but it doesn’t overwhelm.” Sturrock asserts that effective communication with her clients is the most important ingredient for a successful design project. To that end, each project involves multiple meetings with the clients around various aspects of the design: client intake, initial assessment of architectural plans, space planning, finalized layouts and millwork details, reflective ceiling plans, material selections and so on. Sturrock’s overarching vision drives the design of all interior appointments, including custom kitchen and bathroom designs carefully tailored to fit the lifestyle of the clients. Built-in cabinetry and millwork are closely linked with the architectural envelope. The design of these elements is therefore keenly tailored so as to unite function with the desired aesthetic. Every design element, both interior and exterior, is considered in association with the whole. The result is a cohesive and seamless experience; a natural synthesis of concepts and materials. “For this particular project, we layered in a

number of architectural elements to evoke an aura of updated classicism, and subtly repeated a motif of interlacing circles and ovals in the various elements for cohesion. Throughout the main level, we added leaded glass transoms and sidelights to transitional archways so that the rooms beyond unfold with a sense of destination. In the dining room, we designed a robust oval ceiling coffer to pull the motif through and reflect the oval dining table below. To enhance the restful, romantic mood in the master bedroom, we designed an appropriately delicate relief pattern to enliven the tray ceiling. In this house, as for all our projects, we wanted to create the optimal envelope before moving on to furnish the space.” To produce work of this calibre, Sturrock has put together a design team with an extensive architectural and millwork knowledge base, able to work in close conjunction with architects, builders and trades as integral members of the project team. “Each of our designers brings a special skill set to the table,” says Sturrock. “As a result, we can offer our clients full-service design and oversee each project through all its stages, from concept to completion.” When it comes to design excellence, Sturrock feels luxurious design is less about subscribing to the “it’s expensive therefore it’s desirable” mindset, and more about appreciating and understanding good style as it pertains to the intended individual and lifestyle. “Everyone has a different perspective on good living and beautiful design, but this should never be generic, based on the perceived value of pricey brands,” she states. “Exclusive design, in the guise of un-signed and artful ‘one-offs’, is the kind of luxury we subscribe to.”

Oakville Chateau Village West French-inspired grandeur

Inspired by the lure of the French countryside, Village West brings the grandeur and style of chateaus in the Loire Valley to Oakville’s lakeshore. Kerr Village is a vibrant shopping and condominium district along the lake and will be the location for 16 exclusive, European-influenced townhomes. This is where luxury, lifestyle and location unite.

Matas Homes will help you create your own signature look. An in-house design consultant is available to help you amend your floor plan to a custom design that addresses the needs and lifestyle of the whole family.

The homes offer 2,600 to 2,800 square feet of luxurious living near the heart of Oakville’s heritage downtown. The Signature Collection of Homes will each include a personal elevator from the basement to the idyllic rooftop terrace. Personalize your home. This is a novel feature and

It’s hard to imagine a more convenient location. Modern shops outside your door, historic downtown with fascinating boutiques, bistros and fine dining just down the street, world-class performances at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, parks, the lake, marinas. All this is

at your doorstep. For the commuter, escaping the bustle of modern-day life and returning each day to your idyllic oasis was never easier. Highway access and GO Service are close at hand and downtown Toronto and Pearson International Airport are less than an hour away. Village West features two- and three-bedroom floor plans, complete with dens and finished basements with prices starting in the mid $900s.

Stately Presence

Trafalgar Terrace combines luxury with heritage Oakville’s Trafalgar Road is steeped in history. It was along Trafalgar where many of the captains of industry built their homes in the 1800s. These were community and business leaders who built Oakville into a vibrant commercial centre and port. Names such as Chisholm, McCraney and Kerosene Castle can still be seen on the plaques of some of these heritage homes today. Stately and tree-lined, Trafalgar Road continues to provide an impressive entrance to the old town and is to this day a prestigious address that reflects its time in history.

Beautiful Burlington Evian Townes to be part of the vibrant resurgence of downtown Downtown Burlington has been making a spectacular comeback in recent years. It is once again one of the prestigious addresses in the city. New luxury condos, boutique shopping, fine dining and lively lakeside cafes combine to make this one of the most vibrant downtowns you will find anywhere. Graced with a beautiful waterfront and lakeside park, Burlington has long been one of the most desired cities in which to live. Strolling through tree-lined residential streets, sipping wine on an outside patio overlooking Lake Ontario, jogging on a warm evening through Spencer Smith

Park – these are but a few of the pastimes of downtown residents. And it could be your lifestyle at Evian Townes, the French-inspired two- and three-bedroom townhomes to be located on Elizabeth Street in the heart of downtown Burlington. With square footage ranging from 1,900 to 2,400 square feet these spacious units will be well appointed and offer a higher standard of living.

Heritage Awaits A new adult lifestyle offering for the active couple Why battle traffic north to cottage country when Niagara-on-the-Lake offers a unique lifestyle? That was the question Matas Homes asked when it developed plans for two- and three-bedroom custom townhomes that will follow the area’s quaint heritage design. A cottage is nice for awhile, but there is upkeep, the chance that the life of leisure could become boring over time and living hours away from the grandchildren. For the active couple, the sleepy north may not be the place to live. “We thought Niagara-on-the-Lake offers so much for the retired couple or the

professional looking for a second property. World-class theatre, fine dining, historical downtown, seven championship golf courses, award-winning wineries, international entertainment and casinos in nearby Niagara Falls and much more – all this and you are still close to the family,” President John Matas explains. The custom townhomes will be about 1,700 square feet and prices will start in the low $500s. Planning is still in the preliminary stages, but by registering now, you have the opportunity to carefully plan your unit. You can take your time and be absolutely certain you have everything you ever wanted in a home.

Models include two- and three-car garages, in-suite elevator and roof top gardens. This superb Burlington location offers a luxurious oasis in the heart of the vibrant downtown community. Prices start in the low $700s. Construction is expected to begin in early 2013. To register go to www.eviantownes. com.

Realizing

VISION

your R

ealizing your vision on any level is a challenge for even the best of us!

When it comes to home furnishings it can be even more daunting given the vast spectrum of options, styles, fabrics, and finishes to contend with. Half the battle is coming to terms with what you really want and like. The second half is finding it and pulling it together in a way that not only meets your needs but exceeds your expectations. Visions are dreams that can be translated into reality with the right help. Making this happen usually requires partners who can work with you to translate your “vision” into an

o

understandable concept and then into actual design elements and items (read colour themes and furniture styles). For some the service of a skilled interior designer is required. For others who have maxed out on HGTV and shelter magazines and feel they know what they want, finding a sourcing partner who can help find just the right pieces is invaluable. Cocoon Furnishings is just that. A sourcing destination located in Oakville for both designers and customers who are seeking a partner to engage in the selection and procurement of just the right furniture, lighting, area rugs and accessories. Cocoon has brought together some

of the most exciting and unique lines of furnishings that can only be described as “updated classics.” To be successful in this process you must have a plan, or better yet a good understanding of the elements of your vision. This can sometimes be facilitated by selecting some engaging images of existing rooms that have inspired you or represent what you would like to aspire to. On the following pages, Cocoon has laid out an example of the unveiling of a vision into real design elements and into the furnishings that will make your rooms work and ultimately realize your dream. Home Staging When First Impressions Count CERTIFIED STAGING PROFESSIONAL KATHY WOOD

THE FIRST IMPRESSION IS CRITICAL.

Your home has only that one chance to make a good first impression. Maximizing the return on your home requires creating an atmosphere and appearance that evoke an emotional response in the buyer, says Kathy Wood, founder of Divine Redesign. That involves more than just a fresh coat of paint – although that often helps. One of the best investments a seller can make is to hire a home stager to create buyer appeal by emphasizing everything that is positive about your home. Kathy is a certified home stager. She brings warmth, a personal approach and use of a variety of innovative materials and furnishings to turn your home into a stunning showcase. “Home staging is not decorating or interior design. While some of the same design principles are used, the objectives are the opposite. Designers are personalizing a space; stagers are depersonalizing and neutralizing to help a home appeal to any buyer,” Kathy explains. Photographs and virtual tours are more dynamic and enticing when the home has been staged. Powerful photos will help a home stand out on the Multiple Listing Service – attracting more buyers. Kathy rearranges, refreshes, reduces and adds colour and appeal to the home for the buyer's eyes. Located in Oakville and serving the GTA and Hamilton, Kathy's services have been an integral component of many successful Royal LePage Real Estate marketing packages – showcasing homes to sell quickly and for top dollar. The bungalows in each location can be completely customized to your liking, right down to the floor plan, says HUSH president Naheel Suleman. “One of our buyers wanted to have a house where their kids could bring friends over, so we designed a recreation space and outdoor living space with a pool, cabana and a kids’ retreat area in the basement. Another buyer, for example has no children, so we designed a house so that the master bedroom would be on the main floor and the secondary bedrooms were upstairs in case she had guests or wanted to resell the home,” he explains.

And like all HUSH projects, these homes are appointed with top quality products and materials–hardwood floors, 10-foot ceilings, Wolf and SubZero gourmet appliances, granite countertops, marble, and high-end fixtures by Kohler just to name a few of the luxury features that are standard in all HUSH homes. Another impressive point about HUSH is the variety of innovative services they offer, such as a move-in service, annual inspections and certificates (which lead to a better resale value) and interior and exterior maintenance packages, and even holiday decor packages. All of these services are tracked on a virtual concierge/ web portal in the home, which also includes pertinent documents, floor plans, colour selections, manuals, onsite progress reporting, services and upcoming appointments. HUSH builds their homes to exceed Energy Star standards and provides

SATURDAY A.M. A Morning with Ron MacLean

Where the host of Hockey Night in Canada likes to shop and dine in Oakville

A

s Ron MacLean strolls through downtown Oakville, store owners and shoppers alike pause to wave hello or stop him for a few words. This is his town. The host of Hockey Night in Canada may be one of the country’s most recognized celebrities, but here on the main street of Oakville, he’s Ron. This, he says, is the place he loves. “The first time I saw the town was Thanksgiving 1986. I thought it was Shangri-La – the Bronte harbour, a beautiful downtown. I’ve been to many places around the world, but nothing compares to Oakville. It’s a small town and you

quickly get to know a lot of people and business owners. These are great people; it’s a great small town. Cari and I adore it. If I were to retire, Oakville is the town I would choose – without question.”

9:15 AM

Not that he’s ready to retire anytime soon. Since he made the jump from Calgary into the bright lights of Toronto in 1986, Ron’s life has been in the limelight in a major way. He has been host to many top television programs – a quarter century on CBC’s Saturday night hockey, the wildly popular Coach’s Corner with the flamboyant Don Cherry, summer and winter

Olympic Games and last year, the hit reality show Blades on Ice. These are just of few of his wellknown gigs, which have led to 10 Gemini awards. But walking through Oakville on this sun-drenched day with the man who sold him his first home here – Dan Cooper of Dan Cooper Royal Lepage Real Estate – Ron talks about the place he considers home and some of the wonderful shops he likes to frequent. Stores such as Burrows Clothiers where he buys his suits for on-air and awards events.

9 a.m. First stop is Tocca Finita to buy something for wife Cari. It’s one of her favourite shops, and Ron knows he can’t go home empty-handed. With the allure of a New York showroom, the quaint shop provides the service of a small boutique. When it comes to finding some fine clothes for that special night out, Ron says Cari considers Tocca Finita among the best. On this morning, owner Anna Rea helps choose some footwear she knows Cari will adore. 9:15 a.m. Next stop is Burrows Clothiers to find some unique fashions to add to his wardrobe. As host of Hockey Night in Canada, Ron has to ensure he is impeccably dressed – especially when sitting beside the always colourful Don Cherry. Burrows carries two brands that are Ron’s favourites, Baldessarini from Italy and a relatively new line from Denmark – SAND. Both are

of my favourites, everything from popular to classical.”

9:45 a.m. Ron wants to take a quick peek at what’s new in To Set A Table; a store that never disappoints, he says. “To Set A Table carries exquisite pieces, the crème de la crème; very highend flatwear and wine glasses. If we have a special occasion, this is definitely the place to go to cap off your entertaining needs.” Since Ron loves to cook, he often drops into To Set A Table to check out the new items that are coming in all the time.

10:05 a.m. The time goes quickly on a pleasant Saturday morning downtown. Before you know it, it’s time for a bite to eat and one of Ron’s favourite spots for lunch or dinner is Seasons. “Their bread is absolutely the best in town. It’s divine; there is nothing like it,” Ron exclaims. In fact, Ron was a

10:30 a.m. A quick dash across the street brings Ron into Abbozzo Gallery. He has particular tastes in art and always finds something of interest at Abbozzo, which specializes in providing the finest in contemporary art. The gallery represents original artwork by established and emerging artists including David Blackwood (shown here). Gallery Director Ineke Zigrossi is a “phenomenal dealer,” Ron declares, adding that he is consistently impressed with the gallery’s ability to attract outstanding and talented artists whose work is always a good investment.

Knar carries quality items and I can shop with confidence that I’m receiving true value for my money.” 12:20 p.m. It’s back downtown for a a light lunch at Jonathans Restaurant on Thomas Street before heading off to work on the Hockey Night in Canada set. Ron has a soft spot for this restaurant.

10:30 AM 11:40 a.m. Still playing hockey twice a week, Ron trusts Corbett’s Source for Sports on South Service Road for all his sports requirements – from skate sharpening to Underarmour wear. An OHL referee, Ron eventually gave that up when fans showed more interested in getting his autograph than they were in the teams. But he couldn’t give up the game. “I play hockey with Jason Paradine, a buyer at Corbett’s, and I trust his recommendations. He is knowledgeable; he understands the game and knows what I need,” Ron says. 12 NOON Dropping into Knar Jewellery on Cornwall Road to check out what’s new in their jewellery and watches, is a must. The store is a family-owned business that specializes in fine jewellery, watches and accessories by top names such as Rolex, Faberge, Cartier, Chopard and Hearts on

11:40 AM The owners were neighbours and great hosts, he says. “On holidays we typically had two treats – a wonderful meal at the restaurant and another at their home. The food is always fantastic, it has a good wine cellar, a comfortable ambience – you can’t ask for much more than that.” Then it’s into the CBC studios for a full afternoon and evening of work. If there is one thing that is constant in Ron’s life – it’s a full calendar.

Warm brick and stucco walls and the paintings of local artists on display all work to create the charm of old-world dining at Seasons Restaurant. Crisp white linens and formally set tables establish an ambience one would expect to find in a quaint restaurant nestled in Tuscany. George and Tammy Couto, however, prefer to think of this beautiful location in the heart of downtown Oakville as a neighbourhood restaurant – a place you want to visit at least once a week. And many of their patrons do. The key to Seasons’ success is fine dining at affordable prices, and a reputation for a well-stocked, reasonably-priced wine cellar, including a generous selection of local varietals. Their cuisine is French-Italian with a heavy reliance on locally grown produce. Located in the historic Anderson Block in the heart of downtown Oakville, Seasons enjoys a story that is very present today. The building dates back to the 1800s when it was the Anderson Bank and later became the Town offices and local police station. In fact a piece of that history is still alive today. Book an intimate gathering for up to 20 in the private dining room in the wine cellar and you are surrounded by what were at one time the jail cells. Today, Seasons is creating its own history as one of Oakville’s finer dining experiences and one of the favourite choices along Oakville’s “restaurant row.” Seasons is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. Due to its popularity, reservations are recommended. Catering is also available. Both the second floor private dining room for 80 people and the wine cellar for 20 are available upon request at no added fees. George and Tammy took their successful formula and opened their second restaurant Corks, which features a menu with a Spanish-Portuguese influence. Whether you choose Seasons or Corks, you can be assured of a memorable dining experience.

Supporting good causes makes stronger communities.

There is more to a community than homes, roads and shopping districts. The character of a town or city is defined by the number of caring and giving people in our midst. Whether it is donating time or money or both to a food bank, a youth centre or cultural organization, people in our community have demonstrated their generosity year after year.

contribution by every member of the team is a testament to our commitment to give back to the community.

“Give where you live” is a slogan adopted by many charitable organizations across North America, but it really does sum up my own personal philanthropic objectives and the approach of the Dan Cooper Team. I have chosen a handful of outstanding organizations to which I am making significant contributions.

I’m proud that the Dan Cooper Team can be counted among our generous citizens by providing support for local organizations, services and minor sports. The

One such worthy organization is the Ontario Hospital Foundation which has launched a major project – the New Oakville Hospital. This much needed facility will take health care in our area to a new level. The Foundation’s goal is to raise $60 million for a state-of-the-art Continued on Page 38…

Hundreds of youth are at risk right here in our own community – a reality that is only too clear to the caring people and volunteers at Big Brothers Big Sisters. This was

a great day for a great cause and we raised a lot of money for the many youth who need our help here at home. Learn more about Big Brothers Big Sisters of Halton at www.bbbshalton.ca. Other organizations I support include Appleby College and the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts. Education, culture and the arts are also critical for the well-being of a community. I’m proud that my Dan Cooper Concert Series brings internationally acclaimed performers to our small corner of the globe. To find out who is performing at the Oakville Centre in the coming months visit www.oc4pa.ca.

Debbie and Dan Cooper with Chantal Kreviazuk, who performed at the Dan Cooper Concert Series at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts.

I encourage all of you to give back to the community in any way you can; whether it is with money or time or both. Your efforts and contributions help make our community stronger and a better place in which to live.

EILL

Being independent of the financial institutions, I am unbiased and have access to more than 30 lenders as well as private money. Taking advantage of an experienced and skilled mortgage broker will save you time and money.

Q. How do I decide between a fixed rate and a variable rate? A. The primary reason to select a fixed rate is to limit your exposure to rate increases in the future; providing you with financial stability over the term of the loan.

COMMUNICATIONS

Q. Why use a mortgage broker? A. I’m committed to staying apprised of the everchanging interest rates and the wide variety of loans and financing programs available, and so I will obtain the best rate and type of mortgage to meet your short-term and long-term needs.

COMMUNICATIONS

You cannot convert to a different plan until maturity or unless you refinance, but the principal is reduced by a steady amount.

A variable rate can be very attractive, especially if all indications point to a stable economic environment that fosters low lending rates. The borrower runs the risk of rates increasing and while payments remain the same, the principal being paid changes as the rates change.
