TREES Loma Vista Nursery has hundreds of acres of tree production, both ball and burlap and containerized, in Ottawa, Kansas and the surrounding communities, where over one-hundred varieties of cold hardy trees are grown. The majority of the ornamental and shade trees we sell at the Landscape Distribution Centers are harvested in the spring and fall from the fields. Container trees can be harvested year round. In addition to our own nursery stock, we source quality trees to supplement our inventory.

The majority of trees and shrubs can safely be pruned during their dormant period between late fall and early spring. Pruning after new growth emerges cuts off the new growth hormones, which can limit the growth and bloom potential for the entire year. Also, pruning in mid to late summer can seriously damage many plants due to the added stress that summer heat exerts on a plant. ROOT HARDY SHRUBS Allow new growth to emerge in mid spring to determine the extent of winter die back. Prune out dead tissue above new growth. EVERGREENS Most evergreens prefer being pruned in early spring before new growth. If pruned in the fall, they must be pruned in time for the new growth to harden off before winter. PERENNIALS Remove all spent vegetation in late fall. Divide every 3-4 years. GRASSES Shear back to a few inches when dormant. Can either be sheared in late fall or early spring. For added landscape interest, keep dormant foliage through the winter. Must shear before spring growth emerges to prevent squared off tips through the year.
