NALSA

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF LOCUMS IN SOUTH AFRICA

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

S

ince my involvement in the locum staffing industry, I’ve learned of some myths surrounding working as a locum as well as a deeper understanding of the locum mind-set. Locum work is an increasingly popular full-time occupation because it enables the providers to work as self-employed contractors, meaning they can accept or decline assignments as they see fit, allowing them control over where and when they work.

Even though they are obligated to fulfil the responsibilities of an employee with every assignment, they can reject assignments that are not to their liking. Working as a locum provider is right up there with having one’s own private practice, especially for providers who love to travel and wish to practice as a pharmacist, a professional nurse or a GP doctor, without tending to the business side of the industry. Although locum providers do

Andro Engelbrecht

not make up the majority of the industry, their increasing popularity is warranted and helps members of the healthcare and pharmacy industries adapt to the ever-changing contours of the industry. Given the expansion of locum work and global demand for it, we can expect to see that being a Locum is accepted as a full-time career option by more than 15% of pharmacists and other healthcare workers.

Those myths I mentioned earlier: Myth 1: Locum opportunities are scarce or limited to undesirable locations. Reality: Assignments are available in most parts of the country this includes rural, suburban, and urban locales and in varied types of practice environments. Myth 2: The locum lifestyle suits most locum personality types. Reality: Locums practice may be a poor fit for those workers who either require a great deal of direction or desire a consistent work structure. Conversely, being personable and prepared to fit in, are key attributes to a locums success. Myth 3: Locums attract pharmacists or nurses with a questionable work history or competency issues. Reality: This is far from the truth. Physicians who work as locums must have a good practice record and documentable skills and are as thoroughly vetted by hiring agencies as their counterparts seeking permanent positions. In addition, surveys show that hiring facilities routinely rate locums’ skills as very good. Myth 4: Locums won’t be accepted by full-time colleagues at the client’s facility. Reality: This might have been an issue three decades ago, but that rarely happens today. For the most part, colleagues are often so desperate for help or so concerned about the impact of short staffing on customer and patient care that they welcome locums wholeheartedly. Ideally, the locum contemplating a severalmonth assignment will have had either on-site or extensive phone discussions with prospective pharmacist or nursing colleagues. NALSA’s MISSION The purpose of the National Association of Locums in South Africa (NALSA®) is to provide a foundation of industry standards and ethical guidelines for companies specialising in locum and term contract staffing services. These principles are the

cornerstones of the relationship between NALSA® members and their clients. Also to maintain industry leadership by promoting excellence, ethical standards, innovation and a spirit of co-operation for contingent staff.

NALSA’s VISION NALSA is dedicated to promoting a positive industry image through a practical but strict Code of Ethics based upon excellence, honesty, fairness, peer review and reasonable industry standards.

CANCER

Cancer is defined as a collection of related diseases, characterized by the growth of abnormal cells that have the ability to divide uncontrollably and infiltrate and destroy normal tissue. Cancer can begin in almost any tissue within the human body and results when the normal orderly process of cell division, growth and death is interrupted. Usually cells grow and divide to form new cells that the body needs. When the cells become old or damaged, they undergo apoptosis (programmed cell death) causing them to die so that new cells may take their place and function, in order for the body to continue to function in a usual and orderly manner. However in cancer, the routine process becomes dysfunctional, with old and damaged cells surviving beyond the time they should; they may continuously and uncontrollably divide without stopping and form growths called tumours. Cancerous tumours may be malignant, invading surrounding tissues to spread uncontrollably into the body; or they may be benign, not spreading into nearby tissue. Cancer is one of the most common diseases globally, and the second leading cause of death worldwide. Different types of cancers have different prevalence rates. The most common types of cancers in adulthood are skin and lung cancer; with prostate, lung and bowel being most common in the male population; and breast, bowel and lung cancer being most prevalent in the female population. Cancers that arise in children before 15 years of age, compromise childhood cancers; and account for between 0.5% and

12

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

4.6% of all cancers. Annually the 15th February marks International Childhood Cancer Day; a day marked to raise awareness about childhood cancer and to encourage support for children and adolescents with cancer. Families of cancer victims are supported, and survivors are commemorated. The need for early identification, correct diagnosis, better treatment and care for children with cancer is focused upon. Leukaemia is one of the most common types of childhood cancer, constituting approximately a third of all childhood cancers. Lymphomas and tumours of the central nervous system are also common malignancies found in children. Different types include neuroblastoma, nephroblastoma, and medulloblastoma and retinoblastoma. The etiology of cancer may be multifactorial with factors such as gender, age, occupational exposure to mutagens and carcinogens, bacterial/viral infections, contamination of food by mycotoxins (e.g. aflatoxins causing liver cancer) and genetic susceptibility contributing. Different carcinogens (substances capable of causing cancer) may include those from ultraviolet light and ionizing radiation; asbestos and tobacco smoke. Abnormal dietary habits, smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity are also lifestyle factors that may be contributory factors. Complementary and alternative medicine are frequently inves-

Dr. J. Ferreira tigated as a hope to offer milder treatment or to negate adverse events experienced by conventional treatment. Additionally, clinically proven natural medicines offer safe and effective options to treat different side effects caused by chemotherapy. Multi-target therapies are specifically formulated to treat nausea, abdominal pain and a range of abdominal symptoms symptomatically as well as regulate bowel function and offer effective relief for cancer patients quickly without interacting with chemotherapeutic agents. Poor energy levels, poor convalescence and immunity may also be ameliorated through the use of extensively researched herbs that have been clinically tested over decades; to improve immune function and increase energy levels through non-stimulant means. In approaching the integrative use of herbal medicines in cancer, it is important to consult a qualified and registered practitioner. Someone who can responsibly monitor the use of herbal medications ensuring no interaction or reduced efficacy of the chemotherapy, and who is able to advise on specific extracts in optimal amounts and dosing, and identify reputable manufacturers of premium quality herbal medicines. The reason complementary medicine, or using natural agents (vitamins, minerals, nutraceuticals, herbal medicines etc.) in the

CANCER management of cancer is gaining popularity is through anecdotal evidence. This, as well as emerging clinical research indicating benefit of such use. Furthermore, various chemotherapeutic agents have various side effects, which significantly affects the QOL of patients. Phytochemicals, the bioactive nonessential nutrients extracted from plants, have been shown to have putative chemopreventative properties namely anti-carcinogenic and anti-mutagenic; and interfering with tumour promotion and progression. The National Cancer Institute has identified numerous edible plants possessing cancer preventative properties. Phenolic compounds (a class of chemical compounds) may play an important role in cancer prevention and the treatment thereof. They may be found in medicinal herbs as well as dietary plants. Phenolic acids, tannins, and quinones are just a few examples of the types of phenolic compounds. Different bioactivities of phenolic compounds contribute to their chemo-preventative properties. Antioxidant effects, anti-inflammatory, anticarcinogenic or anti-mutagenic effects are all types of chemopreventative effects displayed by these phenolic compounds. Some compounds are even able to contribute to ‘inducing apoptosis, regulate carcinogen metabolism and ontogenesis expression, inhibit DNA binding and cell adhesion, migration, proliferation or differentiation, and block signalling pathways’. By interfering with modulation steps (initiation, promotion and progression) and associated signal transduction pathways, carcinogenesis can be affected. Earlier data has shown that an

14

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

estimated 35% of human cancerrelated mortality was attributed to diet. An inverse relationship between the sufficient consumption of fruit and vegetables and the risk of specific cancers. In essence a high dietary intake of fruit and vegetables as well as whole grains is strongly linked with a reduced risk of cancer. Significant levels of bioactive natural compounds are found in dietary plants, namely fruit and vegetables, uncontaminated spices, cereals, and edible tubers, which may not only provide nutrition but also health benefits that may reduce the risk of many chronic diseases. By inducing cellular defence mechanisms including detoxifying, antioxidant functions, free radical scavenging properties, as well as inhibiting inappropriate inflammatory responses and anti-cell growth signalling pathways that ultimately result in cellular arrest and subsequent cell death. Block et al. (1992) in their study, Fruit, vegetables and cancer prevention: a review of epidemiological evidence, Nutrition and Cancer, approximately 200 papers were reviewed, looking at the relationship between fruit and vegetable intake and lung, colon, breast, cervix, oesophageal, oral cavity, stomach, bladder, pancreas, ovary cancers. In 128 of the 156 nutritional studies reviewed, a statistically significant protective effect of fruit and vegetable consumption was found. The risk of cancer was found to have doubled in individuals with a low intake of fruit and vegetables. This accounts for at least a staggering one fourth of the population- as compared to those with a high intake of fruit and vegetables. The study indicated

that by substantially increasing the consumption of nutritionally rich fruit and vegetables, major public health benefits could be achieved. The biochemical and biological rationale for the effect of fruit and vegetables on cancer is extremely strong due to their content of antioxidants, carotenoids and levels of vitamin C. It has been well established how oxidative events and free radical damage may contribute to the etiology of cancer, and the fact that antioxidants may block or repair such damage. Additionally folate and fiber have been shown to be of great significance for some cancers. Some nutrients have been shown to work synergistically rather than on their own. Ascorbic acid (commonly Vitamin C) has significant free radical scavenging action, may inhibit or reduce the formation of carcinogens. The exact mechanism of action of these constituents and their action together still needs to be discovered, yet existing data indicates benefit for cancer patients, and extensive investigation is ongoing. Improvements in cancer screening and cancer treatment yield improving survival rates of certain cancers. By implementing evidence-based strategies and encouraging an integrative approach for the prevention, early detection, accurate diagnosis, responsible and holistic treatment and palliative care, the number of cancer cases and deaths may be reduced as well as the quality of life and journey of cancer patients and their families being improved. CANCER HOPE AND INSPIRATION

Many occurrences are inevitable. Some knock us down while other events change us and propel us to go within and find strength to rise above the challenge. An experience can defeat us or make us stronger. Sometimes staring death in the face evoke change in order to inspire those who are faced with the exact same situation. Call it fate or your lot, but a few call it purpose…

By Lemanja Davidson

E

nter the word cancer in Google and you will find approximately 548 000 000 results, yet there is not one single result which can guarantee that you will never have to face cancer during your lifetime. A loved one fighting cancer can leave you feeling helpless and raise many questions and sometimes even result in self-blame. The fact stands that prevention measurements, like a healthy lifestyle, is no guarantee to prevent cancer. We cannot support a loved one fighting cancer by entering the emotional state of panic. The most important thing is to strengthen them with our love and faith which will offer them hope.

I was privileged to interview three cancer survivors recently and learned that there are small things that we can do to give hope. According to them: • Do your best not to cry in front of the patient. Stay strong and keep your tears for solitude moments or seek help from a professional therapist who can assist you with facing this traumatic event. • Cancer affects the whole family. It holds many challenging days, therefore make sure that you are well prepared and look after your own health during this time. Eat healthy, drink water, exercise regularly and get enough sleep in order to stay strong emotionally. • Eliminate all negativity where possible and choose to surround yourself and the patient with positivity • Build your faith by accepting your need to surrender to a higher power. • Know that you are not alone. Every year more than 14 000 000 people are diagnosed with cancer. • Keep on smiling, give words of encouragement and include a lot of humour and laughter.

All three these cancer survivors said that laughter and faith gave them hope!

A

ngus Kerr, 18 was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia on the first of January 2013. With his cancer currently in remission, he is a beacon of hope to cancer sufferers. This teenager was a joint winner of the Lead SA Youth Hero Award 2014. His life threatening experience inspired him to be an ally, giving hope to other young cancer fighters. With a great sense of humour Angus is creating smiles in other patient’s lives by spending time with them, sharing his story and encouraging a positive mind set. With a dream to one day become a motivational speaker, I have no doubt that Angus and his incredible spirit will succeed. Besides the tiredness, aching joints, nausea and other challenges, it was the immense feeling of loneliness that left Angus with little hope during his diagnosis and treatments. At first breaking under the pressure of a sudden changed lifestyle and the understanding that he no longer a normal teenager who could spend as much time outdoors, practising soccer or even socialising with his friends. Even eating fast food had to change, as his immune system was highly susceptible to the food he consumed. All these changes left him feeling drained, isolated and with an

18

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

intense feeling hopelessness. Angus spent those first days in an emotional turmoil, hoping for an ally, perhaps another teenager who went through the same dramatic cancer fighting procedure. After searching the Internet and making contact with various cancer organisations around the world, Angus could not find one ally and gave up hope of finding another teenager who conquered this darkness. It was then that he met Professor Nicolas Novitzky, Head of hematology for Groote Schuur and UCT. He set Angus’s life on a journey of hope and healing. It was in the chain of the treatment that another teenager with a similar cancer diagnosis was introduced to him. This meeting changed his perspective on his disease. He knew he was not alone in this fight and if another teenager could make it through, so can he. He exchanged the dark days of, sadness and fear for a chance to give hope to other teenagers going through the same fight. With an understanding (from his experience) that the loneliness can kill a patient perhaps even before the actual disease, Angus embarked on a journey of giving hope to his fellow cancer fighters and started a group, “Warrior

Kids”, with four other young people who had battled cancer. Besides sharing their treatments and stories on Facebook, these five warriors visit paediatric wards across Cape Town with the aim of cheering up children fighting this aggressive disease. The Warriors collect gifts from various supporters of cancer patients primarily based at the UCT Private Academic Hospital where Angus had most of his treatment. Their mission, inspired by Angus: to put a smile on someone else’s face and to create – if only for a few minutes – a space in which the young patient can forget the cancer and enjoy the things many of us often take for granted. For this, his tremendous spirit and gentle heart, Lead SA identified him as one of the youth heroes of 2014. He donated the money he won to “little cancer fighters” in order to help other families in need of assistance. Angus is a true example of overcoming adversity. He had no hope, but through sheer determination he became a beacon of hope for others. Contact Angus Facebook Page: Angus Warriors, Teens with cancer Email: teresak19@yahoo.com

MOTORING

Porsche history:

Ferdinand Porsche founded the company called “Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche GmbH” in Austria in 1931, the company offered motor vehicle development work but did not build any cars under its own name. One of the first assignments the new company received was from the German government to design a car for the people. The result was the Volkswagen Beetle, one of the most successful car designs of all time. The Porsche 64 was developed in 1939 using many components from the Beetle. After a fair amount of success in motor-racing with various models, the company launched the iconic Porsche 911 in 1964, an air-cooled, rear-engined sports car with a six-cylinder “boxer” engine. Another iconic sports car was born. The Porsche Cayenne luxury crossover was launched in 2002. The second-generation Porsche Cayenne went on sale in April 2010 as a 2011 model, with an official debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show.

NEW CAYENNE TURBO S n 2015 Porsche introduced the new Cayenne Turbo S – the top model of the sporty SUV range. Its re-engineered 4.8-liter V8 twin-turbo engine now develops 570 hp (425kw) and 590 ft/lb. (800 Nm) of torque. A chassis that is tuned for maximum driving dynamics and packs a wide range of control systems also makes the Cayenne Turbo S a genuine top athlete. It can complete a lap of the North Loop of the Nürburgring in 7:59.74 minutes. The Cayenne sets a new record for SUVs here, and it also proves that every Porsche is a genuine sports car – even in this vehicle segment. The more spontaneous response of the twin-turbo engine is primarily a benefit of the integral turbochargers, which are now housed directly in the exhaust manifolds. This new approach also improves combustion. The high-performance engine offers 20 more horsepower and 37 ft/lb. more torque than the previous engine. The Cayenne Turbo S accelerates from zero to 100kph in 3.8 sec-

onds – which is 0.4 seconds faster than the previous model. Its top track speed is now 176 mph (283kph). The Cayenne Turbo S also underlines its position as a top performer in its chassis systems. Its standard Porsche Composite Ceramic Brakes (PCCB) include 16.5 inch front brake discs and, for the first time, ten-piston callipers. The rear brakes have 14.6 inch discs and four-piston callipers. The active roll stabilization system, Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC), actively reduces body roll when driving through curves. Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) increases dynamic handling and stability by making specific brake interventions at the right or left rear wheel – this noticeably improves steering into curves and steering precision. The active all-wheel drive system Porsche Traction Management (PTM) permanently drives the rear wheels while offering highly variable power distribution to the front wheels. Some advantages of the interplay between all systems: excellent driving dynamics and traction as well as a high level of agility on any road. Standard features of the Cayenne Turbo S reflect the top level of this model. They include 21-inch wheels in distinctive 911 Turbo design with black painted edges, LED headlights including Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus (PDLS Plus), full-leather interior with Porsche logo embossed on all head restraints, as well as interior carbon accents. Interior styling in a black/cream colour combination is making its debut in the Cayenne Turbo S. Creating exterior visual accents are the air inlet surrounds at the front of the vehicle that is painted in gloss black, the undersides of the door mirrors in the same colour, and the roof spoiler and wheel arch mouldings in body colour. A sport exhaust system is available as an option in combination with a switchable sound symposer, which optimally transmits the genuine V8 sound experience into the interior. - Porsche Press Release LOCUM LIFESTYLE

DIVING WITH OCEANUS SCUBA

E

ver wondered what it feels like to submerge yourself fully, breathe underwater and move freely, in the full 3-dimensional spectre? If the answer is yes, scuba diving might just be something for you. The feeling of weightlessness when exploring the aquatic world has no equal. Oceanus Scuba is a PADI dive school in Cape Town. We welcome all divers, new and old, to join the scuba family or further hone their diving skills. WHERE TO START: PADI DISCOVER SCUBA DIVING

Like everything else, diving might not be for everybody. This is where the introductory PADI Discover Scuba Diving program comes into play. In one day, you will be taught basic theory and get a practice run in the pool or in a controlled and confined water environment. If you are comfortable underwater, you then have the option to go out into the ocean, accompanied by your instructor. This is an awesome little course that will more than likely get you hooked. You’re more than welcome to add another supervised dive to your Discover package, but you will need to take the next course to become a qualified diver. Still, even with this course, you can get some decent diving done during a holiday, no strings attached.

BECOMING A DIVER: PADI OPEN WATER DIVER If you’ve enjoyed your introduction, you can move straight into the PADI Open Water Diver Course. The Open Water course consists of 5 theory sessions and an exam, 5 pool sessions and 4 open water dives. It will typically last 3 to 4 days but you can also spread the course out over weeks or even months if need be. Simply put, from the day you start the course, you’ve basically got a year to complete it. In the end, you will be a qualified Open Water Diver which means you can dive anywhere in the world to a maximum depth of 18 metres. Alternatively, you can choose to enrol for the shorter PADI Scuba Diver Program. Lasting 2 to 3 days, you’ll do the first 3 theory sessions and pool sessions and complete 2 open water dives. This will qualify you as a Scuba Diver, with a maximum depth of 12 metres under supervision of a dive professional. You can always upgrade too Open Water Diver later, after completing the remaining modules. TAKING IT FURTHER: PADI ADVANCED OPEN WATER COURSE By now, you have already surrendered your body and soul to the deep blue and you want to take it to the next level. This is where the PADI Advanced Diver course comes into play. This course consists of 5 Adventure dives in which you focus on a

ADVENTURE / OUTDOOR specific aspect of diving like exploring a wreck, using a compass underwater or going to a depth below 18 meters. Each dive is supplemented by a bit of theory on the relevant topic. Complete 5 adventure dives and you’re a PADI Advanced Open Water diver. Complete only 3 and you’re a PADI Adventure Diver. Advanced Open Water divers can dive to 30 meters, and access more sites. So do Adventure Divers, but again under the supervision of a PADI professional. LOOKING AFTER YOUR FELLOW DIVERS: PADI RESCUE DIVER You are now an Advanced Diver, comfortable in most scenarios and happy to dive with anybody. It’s time to expand on your knowledge with the PADI Rescue Diver Course. In this course, you will not really be taught any new diving techniques. You should be well versed in them. Instead, we will focus on your role within a diving group. How can you help your fellow divers when the need arises? You’ll be placed in simulated emergency scenarios, such as a diver having gone missing or being unconscious, and taught how to react accordingly. You’ll get basic first aid training, knowing what to and when to do it is a huge asset that will make your diving safer and more enjoyable. THE BLACK BELT OF RECREATIONAL DIVING: PADI MASTER SCUBA DIVER If you enjoyed the adventures dive you can enrol for its speciality course. There is a wide variety of to choose from, almost all encompass between 2 and 4 dives. You don’t have to wait as you can start doing speciality courses as soon as you’re an Open Water Diver. Once you’ve completed 5 specialities and you are a Rescue Diver, you’re eligible for the PADI Master Scuba Diver qualification. This is the highest recreational rating obtainable within PADI. HEALTH AND HAZARDS Before any course, a medical questionnaire needs to be completed. If you have health issues, you will be required to get checked out by a physician. You will be allowed to start your dive course once the doctor has cleared you. Barring that, medical requirements are pretty reasonable and straight forward. Try and maintain an acceptable level of fitness and avoid heavy drinking and smoking. There is no real age

restriction on diving, though children will have to wait until they’re ten years old to become junior open water divers. Diving has come a long way since the pioneering days of the 19th century. The scientific knowledge is such that diving is no more or less dangerous than any other sport. Training programs for professional divers are strict and thorough, so you know your instructor will be adequate. Furthermore, instructors willingly choose this lifestyle for the love of it. They eat and breathe diving and take huge pride in their craft. POST DIVE BRIEFING So there you have it. This is the outline of your road to scuba mastery. The world is quite literally your oyster! MOTIVATION

Ditch Unhealthy Thinking Promote Healthy Thinking There are many schools of thought and supporting research advocating the health (mental, emotional and physical) and neurobiological benefits of positive thinking and present moment awareness. They include but are in no way limited to integral theory, ontological and positive psychology, mindfulness, somatic experiencing, Nia, Yoga and many more! We know all of this intuitively and are born to experience life in this way, think of children, they are totally in awe of their surroundings and live in the moment. It is our natural intelligence and state that we know on a cellular level. As we grow up, we consciously and unconsciously dull our senses, which dulls our experience of life and living and hinders innovative thinking. We spend most of our time in our head thinking the same thoughts, or reliving the past and worrying about the future, missing out on the richness of living in the moment. Our obsession with the brain being paramount has ultimately lead to us divorcing ourselves from the rest of our mind/body. The brain likes patterns, so you literally become what you focus on, do and think about.

Science and research is now supporting this intuitive inborn knowledge: that not only is thinking and feeling/sensing inextricably linked, but also that sensory data and present moment awareness can open up a new way of being in the world – resulting in more joyful and effective living and reduced stress levels. (Just by sensing our perception and shifting it consciously) What is “Healthy” Thinking? “Thinking” is not limited to your mind. It is inclusive of your entire body. All parts of you are designed to help you “think” – learning to use your mind (including your emotions and imagination) with the five senses is defined as healthy thinking. Healthy thinking improves behaviour, builds self-confidence, improves communication and information processing and leaves you feeling energetically balanced and connected to living through your whole body. Unhealthy thinking is the defence mechanism we use to ignore what we are really thinking and feeling. It leads to unhealthy (and often addictive) behaviour, loss of self-esteem and leaves you feeling confused, separate and energetically depleted – often on a roller coaster of emotional lows and highs. © The Nia Technique

Tips to ditch unhealthy thinking: How can you start “consciously perceiving” with your whole body? How do you expand your awareness and change the way you think, do things and live within your body and the world at large? How do you move to a more balanced state of body and mind, which allows for clearer and healthier thinking? Start noticing what your focus is. What is your mind busy with? What are the common thoughts you have on repeat? Do they foster confidence and serve you on any level or do they keep you stuck in a selfcreated hell and separate from all the yumminess available to you through your senses? Is it a past memory that brings joy and inspiration or shuts down your thinking? Could you shift your attention to focus on what colours and textures are in your awareness right now? How your hands are warmed by the mug in your hands and how your taste buds dance with delight from a sip of delicious tea, which then fills your body with warmth? Can you tune into the present? Focus and try this for just for 10 seconds.

DRAKENSBERG

The Drakensberg Experience BUSHMANS RIVER TOURISM ASSOCIATION

W

e are not doctors, dentists or nurses, but welcome you all to our amazing, cure-all clinic where our prescription guarantees a full recovery. We are the ultimate drug – The Drakensberg Experience, the elixir of life. Slightly biased maybe, but we are the adventure capital of South Africa. We offer the full range of antidotes and our adrenalin range is unbeatable but if you choose to sit around admiring paradise, it’s all here for your enjoyment. Our story focuses around the Central and Northern Drakensberg region of KwaZulu Natal, including the areas around Estcourt, Weenen and Ladysmith, and began a long, long time ago with a group of hunter gatherers who roamed our region, and had a great love for the eland. They were the Michael Angelos of the Drakensberg. They were the San – the First People and we are privileged to still look in wonder at some of their masterpieces on show in caves or overhangs in our region. The Didima Rock Art Museum is a visual tour through time giving an overview of the San people’s story. Well preserved paintings can be viewed at Giant’s Castle’s main cave. Sadly, the Bushmen no longer roam the Drakensberg but the eland, which they held in such reverence, can still be seen grazing on the slopes of the Little ‘Berg; the site of which is a ‘cure all’ on its own. Forwards to the 1830s when the fiercely independent Voortrekkers decided to seek new pastures away from the British in Natal and rather

36

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

than wasting time going round the Drakensberg mountains they simply went over them. They did not do this in a double cab or SUV, just with horse and ox power together with their families and all their possessions. Examples of this incredible feat can still be seen and these are the people that actually named the Drakensberg. Looking towards the peaks close to what we now call Cathkin, the formation resembled a dragon’s back and the swirling mist made it look even more real – smoke blowing from its nostrils – hence the name Drakensberg (The mountain of the dragon). The Zulus, however saw a different image – they call it Okhahlamba, or a barrier of spears, but call it what you will, it is magnificent. Today there is adventure to suit all tastes. Mountain bike trails criss cross the whole area and we are home to some of the country’s biggest events. The motorised trail riders are also accommodated with various ‘enduros’ during the year and our quad bike trails meander along the foothills. The Tarzan & Jane set can also swing through our indigenous forest to their heart’s content. Our canopy tour has twelve platforms and there are even some zip lines especially set up for the younger kids. Those preferring horses as a means of transport can spend anything from an hour to four days in the saddle. (We do recommend a cushion and pain killers for the longer rides). The list goes on, but suffice to say

one of our most popular pastimes is hiking. The Drakensberg can be likened to a wheel with Winterton or Bergville as it’s hub, and the various valleys emanating from there. No drivable road across the higher regions from the one valley to the next exists but each valley has its own beauty and charm. They all end up at the entrance to the Okhahlamba World Heritage site from where the designated hiking trails start. There are numerous hikes available in each of the areas varying in distance and steepness, from an hour to several days in duration. (Performance enhancing drugs are an asset for the longer hikes, as is oxygen!). Naturally the seasons play an important part in the hiking experience and being caught on the High ‘Berg in a summer electric storm is an adrenalin rush all on its own. From May through the winter months the weather is very stable and over the past few years snow has been very scarce, much to the disappointment of a number of our visitors, but it does make for fantastic, albeit cool, hiking. Our ‘not so active’ list of pursuits is just as long as our ‘blood rush’ activities with our own raptor rehabilitation centre to which birds are flown a number of times per week as well as our own ‘cuddle a python’ reptile centre; an abundance of cafes serving anything from Chinese delicacies to homemade Belgium chocolate and everything in between. A real high point for many people visiting us is a visit to the Cheetah Breeding programme at the Nambiti Game Reserve near Ladysmith.

Being able to see and interact with these magnificent cats is a privilege all on its own and to actually be able to walk with them, by special arrangement, is an honour which should certainly not be missed. Nambiti is a Big 5 reserve within an easy hour’s drive from the Berg and is one of 3 game reserves nearby. Our historical ‘answer seekers’ are also accommodated and can wonder around a number of Anglo Boer or Anglo Zulu battle sites pondering, the reasons and outcomes of the various encounters. The Spionkop battle site is the closest and has the honour of having had General Botha, Winston Churchill and Mahatma Ghandi all on top of the hill at the end of the battle together. Golf is the game of kings and doctors. However handicaps do not mean much when playing in the shadow of either Champagne Castle peak peering down at you from 3000 metres, Cathedral Peak – the highest course in the Drakensberg - or the Amphitheatre with the second highest waterfall in the world cascading down towards you. That double bogey no longer seems that important. For those who wish to leave mother earth behind and head skywards can either do it in a helicopter, or much more sedately in a hot air balloon. Either way, the memories created from these experiences will be cherished forever. To conclude our appointment - the very best medicine you can prescribe for yourselves is a trip to our awesome, stupendous, fantastic, magnificent Drakensberg. Do not delay – we have ample recuperation options and you can stay as long as you need or want. We are the ultimate anti heart attack remedy.

Born and bred in Paarl, Western Cape, this country boy is living out his vision of dressing women in the most exquisite fabrics and designs. Jacques LaGrange’s clients jet in from all over the world to meet this down to earth, one of a kind designer in Sea Point, Cape Town. Clients describe him as a genius fashion guru; a term that Jacques brushes off as mere words. In his own words: “ It’s a job that someone has to do, but I love to do it.”

I

love to dress a strong, powerful, confident woman. All shapes and sizes are beautiful to me.

I need to hide the ‘naughty bits’ and emphasize my client’s best attributes. I always say: “It’s not what you wear, but how you wear it that counts.” More than style, confidence makes a lady look like a million dollars. I can dress a woman in a very expensive dress, but with no confidence, she will not look the part. Therefore before I dress any client, we must first address the self confidence aspect. A favourite client of mine always says: ‘When I had the body I did not have the money. Now that I have the money, I don’t have the body’. She is a fuller figure woman, but is definitely a diva with style that “rocks” the couture garment I designed for her. A woman that is confident within herself is the perfect client. I draw inspiration through my travels around

52

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

the world but also through my everyday experiences, the people I meet, movies I watch, observing passerby, sometimes even by touching exquisite couture fabrics or looking at a specific picture. My collections are masterpieces, created to fulfil a gap in my soul. I go through tremendous effort in order to create a garment to perfection; sometimes it includes travelling, or reading books to educate myself on my inspiration. Often I feel like a sponge that absorbs every bit of information in order to tell the story of my journey - to turn fantasy into reality. Travelling is my drug of choice and my advise to young and upcoming designers: “Jump in and swim.” Travel. Experience is far more valuable than money ever will be. Something my mother taught me was to write down my dreams and it will become a reality.

There are a lot of questions around couture and some even believe that it is a dying trend, not to mention the competition with inexpensive imports that people call couture. As long as there is a red carpet event or a wedding, there will be a need for couture. “Couture is a lifestyle, not a party dress” Jacques Lagrange’s fashion tips will come in handy when you are looking for that perfect couture designer dress... 1) As mentioned above, ‘Couture is a lifestyle not a party dress’ therefore choose a dress to fit your lifestyle 2) Consider your budget 3) Ask questions about the fabrics and styles. Try on garments to see what colours suit your skin tone best and what styles suit your body type. (Don’t listen to your friends or family, find what you like) 4) Remember, it’s not what you wear but how you wear it. You have to wear the dress, not the other way round

54

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

5) Choose a good fabric that suits the design and function 6) BE CONFIDENT! 7) Go for a classic style not a fashion trend, they do not last very long and will date overnight 8) Take care of your clothing and couture garments. Read the dry cleaning instructions. Wash, dry-clean or spot clean and handle with LOVE! 9) Hair, make up and accessories should compliment every couture garment, and can not overpower the design. It should be the finishing touches 10) Go out and enjoy your couture garment after all, why should a designer couture gown hang in the cupboard? Paint the town red, and turn a few heads! Hand made leather products Lewis and Madge started as a hobby between two friends and grew into the company it is today. Their clients appreciate their classic designs and quality manufacturing of leather bags and products that can be passed on for generations. We make every product ourselves in our workshop in northern suburbs of Cape Town. Every product is 100% hand made, hand stitched, hand cut and hand assembled (No machines involved). Our products are not mass produced and no two products look exactly the same. We use only the best natural leather available: mainly bovine, kudu and oryx. We line mainly with pig suede linings, but other linings can be done on request. Our company specialises in classic ladies handbags, classic mens bags and professional bags. We also incorporate gifts like mouse pads, key rings, wine sleeves etc. as well as Ipad covers and baby shoes. Our business is expanding and

new products are added to our production list every week. We have also added travel bags as a new product. Stitching is mostly done in contrasting colours, this delivers an authentic look that is very attractive. We only use 16 count wax thread and stitch in saddle stitch technique for optimum strength and durability. We only use suppliers who use South African tanneries for our leather. All our suppliers/ tanneries use ethical practices. We have a large local and overseas client base with most of our overseas clientele coming from the UK and the USA. Our overseas clients especially love our game skin products like kudu and oryx. Bags or briefcases for professionals have a great appeal as they include features like space for laptops, tablets, card holders and pen holders. They also have enough space for paperwork and files should this be necessary. A big part of our business involves custom design. Before we start the manufacturing

process, meet with the client in person or liaise via e-mail with regards to any special requests they may have. This gives the client freedom to incorporate certain elements that they would like in their own design There are certain points to consider when having a bag made for yourself or as a gift. As all our products are 100% handmade, simplicity and functionality is the key. You should look for something that you will still like ten or twenty years from now. Other points to consider: • Would you like your bag for everyday use or only for occasions? • Do you prefer a flap or a zip/magnetic closure? • How big do you need the bag to be - what would I like to fit in my bag? • Do you prefer a shoulder bag or a Satchel etc. Excellent quality and classic design is what we believe in. Every bag is made with a lot of hard work and especially a lot of love.

This month she celebrates her sixth year with the Chata Romano Team and she loves sharing her passion for the brand.

Julia, 41, Chief Financial Officer

M

oving from a corporate suit wearing UK job 5 years ago and having two babies in the past 4 years, left Julia in despair with regards to defining her new image. She is Chief Financial officer to a private company and wife to the CEO. Her previous business suit style was too formal for her new environment and the jeans and tops she wore most days were too casual. Julia has a golden, but overall rosy sensitised skin tone. Using the Chata Romano Colour System™, we analysed Julia’s skin tone as Medium™.

58

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

We started with Julia’s hair and after styling her locks into a chic bob, our stylist added a golden blonde base colour with golden copper blonde highlights to warm her skin tone. Her makeup worked beautifully with her new sophisticated image. A redness relief moisturiser was applied to absorb the rosiness over the nose and cheek area followed by foundation to even out her skin tone for a fresh and polished look. A shimmering bronzer instead of blusher was used on her cheeks to make skin look sheer and young. The sophisticated smart casual

outfits were chosen for Julia and fits her new profile perfectly, from attending client meetings to entertaining at cocktail hour. Julia has slightly wide shoulders, so we dressed her in a cut-out fitted black cocktail dress with halter neck detail to balance out her enviable narrow waist and hips. To give her upper body soft feminine lines we also chose a draping v-neck blouse and chocolate brown pants for a casual smart look. Julia -“The process reminded me of how important the role is that your image plays in the business world. I am living the benefits of

my makeover.” Hairdresser & Makeup Artist Salomé Zietsman from BRUSH (021-914 1179) using the following products: Wella for hair in Golden Copper

Tammy, 58, Haematology Pharmacist

e wanted to create a glamorous, beautiful “new me” look for Tammy and at the same time ensuring the end result was easy to maintain. Wearing mostly a uniform jacket at work, her wardrobe was in serious need of an update, with the focus on professional, smart casual outfits for the office as well as going out on weekends. Tammy’s natural brown hair colour was too dull for her fair, SOFT™ skin tone, for a warmer medium brown shade with soft copper red highlights, ensured an instant modern look. The soft layers playfully dubbed the new “Jane Fonda” flicks out playfully to the sides and back, softening her square jaw line. Tammy was advised to create some volume at the top by using a medium sized round brush when drying and to ensure a cut every 6 weeks before the regrowth became too heavy and flat. Tammy has a lovely complexion and foundation was only needed around the nose and eye area to even out her skin tone. Alternatively a tinted moisturiser is a great product and time saver! Using short strokes, her beauti-

ful blue eyes popped when her eyebrows were filled with a shade darker brow pencil, and toned completely with her new hair colour. Her brows now frames her eyes perfectly. Swopping the turtle neck for a structured collar shirt, opened up Tammy’s balanced neck and beautiful décolletage, instantly portraying a youthful image. When wearing a draping cardigan, keep the rest of your outfit, like your blouse and pants, tapered, to ensure a slim silhouette. The just-below-the-bottom length cardigan therefor works well to hide fuller hips. The fresh lavender shade works well against a soft skin tone as dark purple will drain light skin tones. The blouse and tapered pants are smart items, but the cardigan is more casual – the overall tone of her outfit is therefor smart casual. “My makeover gave me a renewed confidence about my appearance as I felt glamorous, pampered and I learnt so much. The rich hair colour and cut really suits me and is easy to maintain. The style, colours and fit of the clothes were perfect.” - Tammy

Jungle Gyms and Playhouses BY: Ryan Kuhn 078 111 7695

ooden elements are the forerunners of custom designed play elements for children of all ages. Our children’s play elements are designed with the Montessori philosophy in mind. By that we mean our play houses, jungle gyms, play towers, spinning boards and slides are all designed at children’s height– so that all our play elements are accessible to both toddlers and young children. As well as providing the children and parents with aesthetically pleasing surroundings, they learn to appreciate art and beauty. We give our children something that aid their growth, not only their gross-motor development, but also on a level that assists them through life with healthy degrees of independence, confidence, appreciation and gratitude. The Wooden elements factory is in Kommetjie, Cape Town. It is the perfect space for the creation of products from our imaginations. Our thoughtfully crafted creations are not limited to Cape Town, as we deliver nationally. PLAYHOUSES AND JUNGLE GYMS Instead of creating a playhouse or a jungle gym, we incorporate the two. Building the playhouse on stilts gives endless opportunities to develop on in stages or levels. There’s the possibility of monkey

bars; fireman’s poles; a sandpit underneath the house, or if you have a tree in your garden you can start with a crows nest and then add on to that, the possibilities are really endless. This is what gave birth to our unique play towers, which incorporate the feel of a play house with all the jungle gym elements attached and provide space underneath for a shady sandpit. JUNGLE GYMS: We design unique jungle gyms according to each customer’s requirements. An elegantly painted jungle gym or a smooth oiled or stained jungle gym, the options are endless. The products are designed in an octagonal fashion, which allows each element to come from the central deck. We also build a 5 sided jungle gym, for easy positioning against your boundary wall. These are free standing jungle gyms and can be disassembled and moved. Add on a roof for sun protection or to stimulate imagination. A roof and a wall, give kids a greater platform for creative and imaginative play. PLAYHOUSES: Kids absolutely love anything that is designed for their size, a place where they don’t feel miniature in comparison to our adult world with it’s large size chairs and

counter tops. They are lucky if they can get a glimpse over the counter. Everything is out of reach. Young children love to mimic their parents and play house, and what better place to do that than in their own little house? PARENTAL GUIDANCE: It is good for parents to become involved in the child’s play but to respect their child’s space in the playhouse. Encourage a sense of order in their house and show them how you respect their little home, as much as you would like them to learn to respect your bigger home. Ways you can do this is by giving everything a place – don’t let it get too busy in there. Keep it tidy and limited to only three different themes at a time, example: kitchen, dress-up and gardening equipment. You can always change it every few weeks… take out the dress up equipment and put in some painting/art supplies. Try to create a corner for each activity. Wooden Elements offers three standard playhouses and can custom design too; a barn style playhouse, playhouses with a back trap door leading to a crows nest around the tree or even a castle style playhouse. All customised jobs require a quotation, please feel free to contact us for this.

Indi Spinning Balance Board The most innovative Balancing Board for all ages. When our sense of balance is insufficient, all our attention needs to go to what our physical body is doing so we don’t fall over and hurt ourselves. If we cannot move appropriately, quickly enough or even slow enough, we lose our balance (sense of stability) and we fall down. We all know about the earth’s gravity and it’s effects but many of us have not connected it to the stability and efficiency of how we move through space and organise the information we receive from our senses. The Indi Spinning Balance Board allows freedom of movement never before possible on a balance board and therefore more developmental benefits than any other balance boards on the market. Our ISBB is a hard-wearing outdoor wooden toy, that will last the distance. Made with exterior ply, coated with Glatex (to protect longevity of the timber) and a galvanised steel bracket. The ISBB can swivel 360° and move up and down – an all-rounder Balance Board that has gotten a lot of attention from occupational therapists, physiotherapists, teachers, parents and of course even more attention from children. BENEFITS: Balance is the basis of all learning, especially for children. Just by balancing we are activating both hemispheres of the brain. The brain is thought of as a muscle, so ‘use it or lose it’ principle applies. The Corpus Collosum is a bundle of millions of nerve fibres which connect the left and right hemispheres of the brain. As the right side and the left side of the brain have very different functions we are now seeing that when we use our ‘whole’ brain we are much more effective as we are able to be logical and creative at the same time. Most of us are either left or right rain dominant, so it is important to try balance this by improving the less dominant side. By being on the Indi Spinning Balance Board one is increasing the brain processing speed and efficiency as well as improving the integration right and left hemispheres of the brain. It also activates integration of the vestibular, visual, kinaesthetic, and tactile senses. “From early childhood on the tendency towards

62

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

BY: Ryan Kuhn 078 111 7695

a particular brain dominance is being formed, remaining in that tendency during normal daily activities. A picture is being formed of how the person will see the world. The education program can be tailored to foster talents, gifts and abilities. The type of the future: The balanced Whole-Brain Type The whole-brain type is balanced and usually inconspicuously modest. S/he does not suffer from the extreme tendencies of a hemisphere dominant person. S/he has emotions and knows their origin. S/he is much more conscious of her/ his motivations. Unconscious biases are much less destructive then in brain hemisphere dominant persons. S/he is creative and logical at the same time, and creativity emerges from utilising all mental capacities.”

lean bill of health with SARS? Due to the ever changing and increasingly onerous requirements of the Tax Legislation, the efficient and effective administration of your tax affairs has become more and more important . It is not only important to ensure compliance, but also that all available legal deductions are taken into account to secure the most tax efficient outcome. Here are some answers to the most frequently asked questions: Tax Season, Deadlines and Penalties The year of assessment relates to the period for which an income tax return needs to be submitted. The 2015 year of assessment relates to the period of 12 months that ended on 28 February 2015. The 2015 return will thus include all the income and expenditure of an individual for the period 1 March 2014 up to 28 February 2015. The filing season for individuals for the 2015 year of assessment opens on 1 July 2015 and the deadlines for submitting this return depends on the nature of your income and also the method of submitting the return. Deadlines: • 30 September 2015 (manual or postal submissions) • 27 November 2015 (via eFiling for non-provisional taxpayers) • 29 January 2016 (via eFiling for non-provisional taxpayers) Ensure that you not only submit your 2015 return in time, but also that all returns for previous years has already successfully been submitted. Any taxpayer who doesn’t submit their returns in time will be charged an Admin penalty. This penalty amount depends on a taxpayer’s taxable income and can range from R 250 up to R 16 000 per month. As this penalty recur each month for as long as the tax-

payer is non-compliant, the cumulative amount can quickly escalate to a material liability. Calculation of Taxable Income Taxable income is calculated per year of assessment. This calculations is done on an annual basis and is included in the yearly return that is submitted. Typically the taxable income of a taxpayer can be calculated as follows: Income (Gross Income less exempt income) Less: Deductions and allowances Plus: Taxable portion of any taxable capital gains The income tax liability is calculated based on the total taxable income. It is therefore imperative to not only ensure that all income is included, but also all available legal deductions. (Any omission of income will result in additional penalties) Available deductions against taxable income The nature of your income will determine which expenses are available as deduction against your taxable income. As this might become a very technical matter, the assistance of a tax advisor is advised. Typically the following expenses might be available: - Medical Expenses - Pension and retirement fund contributions - Donations to public benefit organisations that can issue a tax deduction certificate - Certain Income protection policies - Allowance for wear and tear, bad or doubtful debts and certain legal expenses Should the nature of the taxpayer’s income permit, the following deductions might also be available: - Travelling expenses - General expenditure incurred in the production of income The use of subsistence and other allowances might also create significant tax benefits.

Income Tax Rates

After taxable income has been determined, the following tax tables are used to determine the taxation due to SARS:

Other pitfalls

The following matters might also require careful consideration and the guidance of a tax advisor is advised: - Do you need to register for Income Tax? - Do you need to register as a Provisional Taxpayer? - Should your employer deduct PAYE on a monthly basis? - Future Income tax payments and making sufficient provision to enable you to meet resulting SARS liabilities. - The inclusion of other income from investments and other capital gains in your yearly return. - Benefits of making investments via trusts and companies. - Choice of business structure should your professional career path lead to starting your own business. Should you elect to employ the services of a tax advisor, ensure that the selected advisor is a registered tax practitioner with SARS. The use of an advisor, that is also additionally registered with a reputable professional body, is further strongly recommended.
