GAME 1 - LOS ANGELES - West Coast Conference play opened the 2013-14 campaign with two of the more explosive offenses going toe-to-toe in the WCC Game of the Week. It was the Lions’ defense that helped the Lions post an 87-76 win over BYU n Saturday afternoon at Gersten Pavilion. The Lions got a game-high 27 points from freshman Evan Payne and held the top scorer in the WCC to half his average. Payne hit a career-best five three-pointers to post the fourth best scoring performance by a freshman in LMU history. He was joined by senior Anthony Ireland with 14 points, nine assists and five rebounds. Freshman Gabe Levin added 12 points and seven rebounds while sophomore C.J. Blackwell had 11. The Lions (9-4, 1-0) held Tyler Haws, who entered averaging 23.2 per game to lead the WCC, to just 11 points on 4-for-15 shooting. The Cougars (8-6, 0-1) were led by Kyle Collinsworth with 18. LMU held BYU to 13 points below their league leading average of 89.2 as a team. The Lions posted a 17-2 run over the next four minutes to go up 14, 21-7 with 13:05 to play. LMU would never trail by less than 10 the rest of the way. They would lead 48-33 at the break, and with the lead sitting at 12, 54-42, the Lions hit three straight three-pointers, two by Payne, to push the lead to 21, helping them improve to 4-0 at home this season. GAME 2 - PROVO - A pair of second half runs, early second half foul trouble and a late scoring drought spoiled LMU’s opportunity to steal one in Provo, as BYU pulled away late for a 91-68 victory at the Marriott Center on Saturday night. Anthony Ireland had 17 points while C.J. Blackwell added a season-high 15 for the Lions (10-8, 2-4), who shot 53 percent in the first half to take a lead as large as 10. However, the Cougars (11-7, 3-2) used a big second half push with 54 points to pull away thanks to 31 points by Tyler Haws. It was his second straight 30-point game. Kyle Collinsworth added 20 points, with Matt Carlino scoring 18 and Josh Sharp with 10. BYU held the Lions to 42.3 shooting in the second half, including just three field goals in the final 12 minutes. BYU, however, shot 63 percent in the second half, hitting 50.9 percent for the game. They also capitalized on a +22 edge from the charity stripe, hitting 30-for-38 (78.9 percent). The Lions finished 48.2 percent from the field and hit 8-for-14 from the free throw line. The Lions took a 10-point lead with 9:06 to play in the first half and led 38-37 at the break. Ireland’s jumper just 45 seconds into the second half gave LMU a 42-37 lead. However, the Cougars went on a 10-0 run capped by a Nate Austin lay-in to take a 47-42 lead. That would set-up the Cougars final run. The Lions would get just three more field goals the rest of the way.

• While Ireland has been a mainstay in the Lions’ line-up the last four seasons, playing shorthanded is nothing new for the Lions in the six seasons under Head Coach Max Good. The Lions played just the second game in LMU history with just six players after Gabe Levin missed the cgame with a concussion. Junior Chase Flint, who had played in 42 games as a Lion with 24 starts, suffered a broken elbow against Portland on Jan. 16 and is out the rest of the season. He is the third former starter to be lost for the season in 2013-14 due to injury. Levin is expected to be back in the line-up for the WCC tournament. However, combined with freshman Patson Siame’s year of residency, the Lions will play this weekend with just seven scholarship players. It has shown up the last four games for the Lions as Anthony Ireland had played 137 straight minutes before coming out due to foul trouble against USF. In addition, the Lions’ opponents have held a 119-18 edge in points off the bench the last four contests of the regular season. • Entering the WCC tournament, key players have missed 70 games this season due to injury, including Flint’s 13 games, Godwin Okonji (leg suffered in car accident prior to practice on Oct. 20, see LMULions.com for more) for the entire season (31 games) and senior Ayodeji Egbeyemi (hip) the last 23 games. The two seniors will look to apply for a medical redshirt and the end of the season. Levin also missed two games with a shoulder injury at the end of non-conference. The Lions have had 10 starting line-ups this year, second only to Good’s first season in 2008-09 for fewest line-ups. A year ago the Lions had 10 different starting line-ups as key players missed 30 games. In 2011-12 when they won 21 games, the Lions featured 11 starting line-ups but had key players miss just 25 games, the fewest in Good’s tenure. In 2010-11 they had 15 line-ups with players missing 63 games. In 2009-10 in which the Lions had 18 wins, they had 10 line-ups with the second fewest missed games, 26. And in his first season, the Lions were down to six scholarship players at one point and key players missed 68 games.
