Lees-McRae Athletics: Success Elevated

Head Women’s Soccer Coach University of Alabama, 2007 Cally Morrill is in her second season as the head women’s soccer coach at Lees-McRae. Morrill came to Lees-McRae in December 2009, after serving three seasons as an assistant coach at nearby Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, N.C. She took over the reins of a women’s soccer program which finished fifth in Conference Carolinas in 2009 with an 11-7-1 overall record. The University of Alabama graduate made an immediate impact in her first season, leading the Bobcats to a 14-6 finish, which marks the program’s best record since the 2000 campaign when LMC posted a 17-6 overall mark. Lees-McRae also posted its highest finish in the Conference Carolinas standings since the 2003 campaign, concluding the regular season with an 8-2 mark against league opponents en route to a semifinal berth in the conference tournament, and a tie for second in the final league standings. Under Morrill’s leadership, the Bobcats cracked the top 10 in the NSCAA/Hendrickcars.com NCAA Division II Southeast Region poll in back-to-back weeks, while also concluding the season ranked 10th in the nation in scoring offense. In addition to the team’s success in 2010, Morrill mentored five all-conference players, including Daktronics NCAA Division II all-Southeast Region Second team selection MaryBeth Sullivan. Senior Brittany Bolton also earned a spot on the all-conference second team, while juniors Brooke Santerre and Mary Dorn joined Sullivan on the first team. Junior Vickie Rich also earned a spot on the all-conference second team. Morrill starred on the pitch for the University of Alabama from 2002-2005, where she was a four-year starter, served as a team captain as a senior, and earned team MVP honors. During her career at Alabama, Morrill also spent time interning as a strength and conditioning coach for the Alabama women’s volleyball and women’s soccer programs as part of her degree work in sports and exercise. Morrill spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Lenoir-Rhyne, where she was an integral part of the Bears’ success during the 2009 campaign when L-R posted an impressive 14-7-2 record. She also serves as an assistant coach for the 95’ girls’ North Carolina Olympic Development Program.

Nick Whiting Assistant Women’s Soccer Coach University of West Florida, 2007 Nick Whiting is in his second season at Lees-McRae as the assistant coach under head coach Cally Morrill. Whiting helped guide Lees-McRae to one of the best seasons in program history in 2010, as the Bobcats posted the school’s highest win total since 2000 with a 14-6 overall record. Lees-McRae also posted its highest finish in the Conference Carolinas standings since the 2003 campaign, concluding the regular season with an 8-2 mark against league opponents en route to a semifinal berth in the conference tournament, and a tie for second in the final league standings. Whiting spent the 2009 season at Catawba College, where he helped the Indians to a 13-5-2 record, a sixth-place ranking in the NSCAA Southeast Regional poll and a trip to the South Atlantic Conference semifinals. Whiting’s primary responsibility at Catawba was recruiting, where he helped the Indians sign seven players on National Signing Day. He also served as the goalkeepers coach, guiding the Indian net minders to nine shutouts and a goals against average of 0.86. In 2008, Whiting was a graduate-assistant coach at Western Carolina University during their Southern Conference championship season. His primary responsibilities included game day operations and recruiting. 
Prior to his time at WCU, Whiting spent a year at Jacksonville University as a media relations assistant for both the men and women’s soccer teams, as well as several other sports. 
Whiting also coached the U-11 FCCA Rowan Revolution while working at Catawba. He has previously worked summer soccer camps at Austin Peay, Western Carolina and Jacksonville. 
 A native of Panama City, Fla., Whiting is a 2007 graduate of the University of West Florida, having earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in communications with a specialization in public relations.
