SUBSCRIBERS GET THE BEST SEATS AT THE BEST PRICE NOW washingtonballet.org | 202.362.3606 x605 from Septime As I embark on my 15th season as Artistic Director of The Washington Ballet, we are throwing down the gauntlet with programs that demonstrate TWB’s artistic prowess in classical and contemporary repertoire and level of excellence and innovation. Celebrating the fluidity and drama of the human body, TWB opens the 2014.2015 season with Petite Mort: Masterworks by Kylián/van Manen/Wheeldon, featuring three of Europe’s most celebrated dance-makers. Jir ˇí Kylián’s Petite Mort, Hans van Manen’s 5 Tangos and Christopher Wheeldon’s Polyphonia are each groundbreaking and innovative works that showcase TWB’s extremely high level of dance. Petite Mort is Jir ˇí Kylián’s masterwork. Haunting, joyfully witty and provocative, Septime Webre declares its ‘pas de deux’ among “the most innovative [he] has ever encountered.” One of the Fathers of the ‘Dutch’ movement, Hans van Manen tears down the walls between ballet and contemporary dance. Sexy, tart and exhilirating, his 5 Tangos is a sizzling work that combines ballet with the passion and dramatic flair of tango. Polyphonia was Christopher Wheeldon’s breakout piece for New York City Ballet where he won the Critics’ Circle Award and an Olivier Award. In the spirit of the Balanchine/Stravinsky collaborations, Wheeldon’s choreography of great subtlety and elegance with dynamic and varying moods is set to Ligeti’s virtuoso piano music. The evil spell can only be broken when a young man pledges his love and marries her. Should he betray her, she will remain a swan forever.
