Lions’ Leader Looks To Reload When starting quarterback Travis Lulay inked his name on a two-year extension with the B.C. Lions in January 2013 reportedly for $450,000 per season, it was an emphatic exclamation point on a storybook team. After all, it was the “Red Tornado” – named for his closely-cropped red hair – who resurrected the Lions’ dismal 0-5 start and turned it into a 2011 Grey Cup championship. That same week, the 29-year-old nabbed both the CFL and Grey Cup MVP honours, becoming the first to do so since fellow Lion Danny McManus in 1999. “Honestly, [the awards] happened so fast and I was so focused on winning the Grey Cup game that it took a few weeks to sink in,” Lulay recalls.

“I truly believe that a quarterback’s individual achievements are a reflection of the talented guys around him, so I was honoured to accept those awards on behalf of my teammates.” What the team accomplished last year was incredible. Best in the league in six of the eight major defensive categories and four of the eight offensive, the Lions had a strong season but faltered in the 2012 Western Finals when the Calgary Stampeders won 34-29. Previously, the Oregon native and Montana State standout made stops with the Seattle Seahawks, New Orleans Saints, and NFL Europe’s Berlin Thunder before landing in Vancouver. His true gridiron journey, however, began at

by Crystal Kupper age 14 on his high school football team. Initially unsure of what position he wanted, Lulay soon discovered he “loved being the decisionmaker and naturally threw the ball well … so quarterback seemed like the right fit.” It was a decision neither he nor Montana State University a few years later ever regretted. As a Bobcat, Lulay made school history with records set in career passing yards, single-season total offense, and total career offense while graduating with a 3.91 GPA. With no lasting NFL roster spot, Lulay became a Lion in May 2009, a move that then head coach and general manager Wally Buono admitted held “high hopes.” continued on page 2

f the clicks of the camera were coins, Kylie Bisutti would be rich. Walking the runway at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in New York City, the 19-year-old winked and blew kisses to the crowd. The Black Eyed Peas rocked the auditorium as she strutted down the runway in high heels and diamond-covered lingerie. Backstage, supermodels like Miranda Kerr and Doutzen Kroes congratulated the 5-10, 115-pound stunner. As the 2009 Victoria’s Secret Angel Search winner, Bisutti had beaten 10,000 other aspiring models to walk the stage at one of the world’s most famous fashion shows. The cameras rolled as Heidi Klum, the most famous supermodel of all, hugged Bisutti. “You did a fantastic job!” Klum said. “Are you going to be back next year?” Bisutti smiled coyly. “I hope so,” Kylie Bisutti she replied. And why wouldn’t she? After five years of modelling in America, Thailand and Japan for magazines like Seventeen and onstage at the New York Fashion Week, the Nevada native had finally reached the top. But Bisutti wouldn’t be back. No one would guess that two years later, after posing for FHM and Maxim magazines – a common stop for supermodels – she would purposefully leave her lucrative job. It was a career that the self-professed tomboy initially never imagined. Raised in Jackpot (and later Las Vegas), she hunted, fished and rode ATVs. Yet people took notice of Bisutti mainly for her never-ending legs and thin physique, teasing her for being “a giraffe.”

Soon, she set her sights on fashion. “I don’t remember wanting to be anything other than a supermodel,” she told the New York Post. “And people were always telling me I should model – family, teachers, even random people on the street.” At age 14, she signed with one of Las Vegas’ largest modeling agencies and began working regularly at the Fashion Show Mall. With a substantial portfolio, Bisutti moved to the Big Apple at 16. She quickly found work at the prominent New York Fashion Week. Life was certainly glamorous. But Bisutti quickly discovered the fashion industry’s less-glittery underside. Her pot-smoking roommate, also a model, struggled with bulimia. Other teenaged model friends hung out at clubs where alcohol flowed freely, and so did the lecherous glances. “I had photographers and male models hitting on me constantly,” Bisutti said. “Once, a photographer actually pushed me up against the wall and tried to kiss me.” That incident wasn’t isolated; Bisutti’s handlers pressed her for a topless photo shoot, and though uncomfortable, she agreed. After all, every other working model had one. Though she was a size 2, the jobs soon dried up. Her agent made it clear why: she was a “big model” who looked like “a fat pig.” So Bisutti restricted her diet to pineapple, watermelon and water, dropping to 108. Her agent was thrilled, and the jobs reappeared. Those compromises sharply contrasted with the acceptance Bisutti felt at church. When she first attended at age 15 at a friend’s invitation, she knew nothing about Jesus – only that He loved her unconditionally. “As a teen, I was really drawn … to the fact that Christ cared for me so much that He died on a cross for me to

head coach Mike Benevides. “Travis is an outstanding quarterback and an outstanding leader,” he told The Globe & Mail. “I think he doesn’t get enough credit.” Though Lulay doesn’t actively seek “credit” from others, he gladly embraces the role of leader. “I am most comfortable ... in a position where I can positively influence other people.” he says. “I view it as my responsibility to take advantage of any opportunity to do so.” Paris Jackson, a Lions receiver, says Lulay leads through simple actions like eye contact. “Lulay is a quarterback that I haven’t seen in a long time,” Jackson told the National Post. “He’s just so accurate and so smart as a quarterback … He’s just one of those guys who’s a real team leader.” Growing up, Lulay

Those hopes took root in 2010 when, after suffering his own minor hand injury, the 6-2, 216-pound righty finally took over for the injuryriddled Casey Printers. Lulay eventually finished 4-5 as a starter, showing flickers of potential. When B.C. lost their first five games in 2011, however, that potential seemed lost. “[It] was mentally challenging, but I never wavered in my personal belief system … how I prepared for games each week, and my belief in the guys around me,” Lulay says. “Fortunately, I had a great group of guys around me that held true to many of those same beliefs, and we were able to overcome the early season hardships and finish the season strong.” Such momentum carried them through playoffs straight into the Grey Cup Championship on Nov. 27, 2011. In front of a 54,000+ home crowd at B.C. Place Stadium, B.C. bested the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 34-23. The Lions were Grey Cup champs, while Lulay was both the CFL and Grey Cup MVPs. “I don’t put personal goals on certain numbers or statistics; I believe those things come if you are correctly preparing to win week in and week out.” Tim an Tebow That’s attitude that impresses Lions’

forgive me of my sins,” she tells Living Light News. She asked Jesus to be her Lord at summer camp. It was a decision she never regretted, and something she found in common with her future husband Mike. After a whirlwind courtship, Kylie and Mike married in 2009. Not long after their wedding, Bisutti auditioned for Victoria’s Secret. Her runway skills quickly attracted notice; one executive called her walk one of the best he’d ever seen. When Victoria’s Secret named Bisutti as a finalist, she lived in a stunning NYC apartment with nine other models for a reality show. Viewers voted Bisutti the winner, giving her the chance to walk in Victoria’s Secret’s biggest show. She had finally made it. But the high life wasn’t what she envisioned. Company executives encouraged her to flirt with celebrities; photographers wanted provocative poses in skimpy swimsuits; her body was constantly critiqued and used as stylists saw fit. It all clicked after yet another sexy photo session: Bisutti wasn’t selling beauty – she, as a married woman, was selling sex. “There was only one type of woman I knew who sold sex for a living, and the idea that people … might be casting me in that light made me physically ill,” she wrote in her newly-released memoir, I’m No Angel: From Victoria’s Secret Model to Role Model (Tyndale). “It wasn’t just the situations surrounding the job that were the problem; it was the job itself.” So she quit, attracting plenty of media attention. “The public has been very intrigued by it all,” she says. “Hearing girls’ reactions [has] been so life-changing for me, because God has used this decision to impact so many of their lives!” Today, Bisutti is working as an inspirational speaker and on her upcoming clothing line. She knows her worth isn’t based on what the scale – or any fashion photographer – says. “I now see myself the way Christ sees me,” she says.

witnessed many great leaders. More significantly, he learned about Jesus Christ, the Ultimate Leader, and asked Him into his life at a young age. “The most important thing in my life is my relationship with God, so it really helps me put football in perspective,” he tells Living Light News. “When I could easily be discouraged by losing games or poor performances, I know that if I’ve done everything I can to prepare to play my best, I can sleep well knowing God has a plan for me and my life.” Though Lulay shies away from “thumping [his] teammates on the head with a Bible,” he and his wife Kim try to share Christ and His impact with friends and fellow Lions. Lulay also actively attends team Bible studies and prayer groups. With the renewed contract, high expectations, a 26-game touchdown streak from last year, and a team reloading after last season’s disappointing end, Lulay knows all eyes will be on him. Yet he’s unfazed. “Professional sports are, by nature, a high-pressure line of work, and the quarterback position is one of huge responsibility,” Lulay says. “I deal with pressure by knowing if I do everything I can to prepare myself to play my best, I can leave it all on the field and have no regrets about what I’ve done. I also know that as a Christian, I can put my full faith in God’s plan and cast my worries and fears upon Him.”

Newsbriefs Siegel’s Sweet Idea LOS ANGELES, CA — For Dylan Siegel, having Jonah Pournazarian as a friend is “so chocolate bar” – the boys’ code word for “awesome.” So when the enterprising six-year-old found out his best friend suffers from a rare genetic disease affecting the liver, Dylan came up with a “chocolate bar” plan. The boy wrote a 16-page book he’d planned to sell to raise funds for Jonah. His mom suggested that he set up a lemonade stand, but young Dylan had writing a book on his heart. In less than an hour, Dylan produced the first few pages. The following morning, he finished the book – aptly titled Chocolate Bar – complete with illustrations. It talks about Dylan’s many “chocolate bar” experiences, ranging from

going to Disneyland to visiting the aquarium. He ends it with “I like to help my friends. That is the biggest chocolate bar.” Siegel’s sweet fund raising venture quickly gained momentum. The book raised $30,000 in the first two months and, combined with the sales of donated Whole Foods chocolate bars, the total amount currently sits at $300,000. All of the proceeds go directly to the Jonah Pournazarian GSD 1B Fund to support breakthrough research at the University of Florida. Glycogen storage disease type 1B affects one in a million people, and Dylan’s ultimate goal is to raise a million for research. Faith And Fastballs SECAUCUS, NJ — Righthanded pitcher Mark Appel knew he was taking a leap of faith when the former Cardinal turned down Pittsburgh Pirates’ $3.8 million offer last year and returned to Stanford for his senior year. But the risky move paid off big time for the 6-foot-4, 195-pound top draft pick who recently inked a deal with the Houston Astros for $6.35 million. The Houston-born Appel wasn’t nearly as big of a risk-taker early in his career. In an interview posted on Stanford Athletics’ YouTube channel, the hardthrowing pitcher spoke about how he used to worry and feel insecure about his baseball performance. But when he developed a deep understanding of Jesus Christ’s

love and acceptance, the 21-yearold finally found rest from the stresses of being an athlete. “I kind of surrendered my baseball career to Him and said ‘Look, if You want me to play baseball then I trust that it’ll happen. I’m gonna work my hardest at it, I’m gonna do the best I can, but if it doesn’t work out, that’s alright.” So far, it’s been working out extremely well for the Management Science and Engineering grad with the mid90s fastball. Prestige and money aside, Appel says playing baseball is just another opportunity to give glory to God’s kingdom. “When you look at it like that, it takes the stress off to perform. Honestly, when I go out, I just think ‘Man, God is too good.’ ”

An Unlikely Reunion PHOENIX, AZ — When Amy Roberson made that fateful phone call to connect with her birth father, she had no idea he was he was a lot closer than she thought. Will Russell, the 24-year-old’s biological father, told FOX 10 News she was given up for adoption “right after birth.” When Roberson was born, Russell felt he wasn’t ready to be a father due to his addictions. Roberson knew she was adopted and dreamed about meeting her birth dad. She often searched on social media sites hoping to find a lead. In the meantime, Russell left his old life behind and became a pastor. Unknown to Roberson, he often thought about his long-lost daughter and started six months ago to pray a specific prayer for her: “I don’t know if she knows Christ but if You cannot bring me into her

life, bring someone who will deliver the Gospel message to her.” One day, Russell’s cellphone rang. “I heard a voice that said ‘May I speak to Andrew?’ ... I haven’t used that name in over 20 years,” he told FOX 10 News. It was Roberson calling to tell him that she was his daughter. When they met the next morning, they were in for another surprise – for the past year, both had been volunteering at the same rescue mission, just in different departments. “It’s incredible to see both of us in the same place so comfortable and so familiar,” said Roberson. The two recently celebrated their first Father’s Day together. Russell’s prayer was finally answered. “God has perfect timing,” said Roberson. “It’s because of my father that I came to have a relationship with Christ that I have today.”

Extreme Build For An Extreme Need MCCREARY COUNTY, KY — Two years ago, Shawna Barnett barely escaped with her life from a horrific car accident. The sleep-deprived young mom was on her way to college nursing class when she fell asleep at the wheel, crashing almost headon with a commercial refrigeration truck after her white Ford Focus crossed the centre line into oncoming traffic. After a series of surgeries and rehab, Shawna is slowly getting back to her normal routine. Now, she finds herself face-to-face with another miracle. Shawna, her husband Malachi and their twoyear-old son Easton are the latest and youngest recipients of a new house, courtesy of Kentucky Baptist Fellowship’s Extreme

Build. “It’s just so amazing how God has moved for us,” Shawna, who’s studying to become a pediatric nurse, told the Associated Baptist Press. Extreme Build is an annual program that aims to build a house in 10 days for a low-income family in Kentucky with the help of local churches, agencies and individuals. The family will receive $20,000 towards the financing of the $120,000 home. In return, the family needs to put in sweat equity and pay for the mortgage. For the Barnetts, having a sturdy house is a much needed help. “My husband’s a preacher, and we do everything we can to try and live right and do what we can for the Lord,” Shawna told ABP. “I’m just ecstatic.”

NEW ORLEANS, LA — Delvin Breaux recently secured a roster spot with the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The Louisiana native travelled a long arduous journey to get there after a life-threatening neck injury six years ago. A long scar running from the base of his skull to his shoulder blades is the only reminder of Breaux’s devastating ordeal. Wanting to get noticed by visiting college scouts at the time, the high schooler made a tackle and was knocked out in a headfirst collision, breaking a vertebrae in his neck and shifting two more. Unbeknownst to him, a bone chip from the fracture partially blocked his right vertebral artery, starving his brain and spine of oxygencarrying blood. Doctors said the injury could have killed him

Investing In The Future ORLANDO, FL — Growing up on New York’s Lower Eastside, Harris Rosen saw homeless people living under the LRT and routinely stepped over drunks on the way to school. But with his parents instilling the value of education in him, Rosen didn’t live in the neighbourhood for long – he’s now a millionaire hotel magnate whose company owns seven Orlando hotels with over 4,000 employees. Despite the 73-yearold hotelier’s success, he never forgot his humble beginnings. Over the last 20 years, Rosen has become an avid philanthropist. He says God has been good to him and it’s his way of giving back. “In the back of my mind is a thought when I see a homeless person,” the business tycoon told Florida Trend, “that there but for the grace of God go I.” He adopted

“I’ve only got 12 years to save $100,000 for college.”

To Serve Or Be Served by Andrew Hess

www.glasbergen.com © 2013 by Randy Glasbergen

In November 2010, a wedding party in Glenelg, Australia was interrupted when, as they were posing for pictures on a scenic ledge, a woman hiking nearby fell into the ocean below and began to drown. Still dressed in his tuxedo, the best man jumped in and helped the woman back to shore. Then the s Andrew Hess bride – a nurse – waded out in her wedding dress and began administering CPR. By the time emergency volunteers arrived, the woman had regained consciousness. One safety official said, “[The victim] was very lucky that the bridal party was there and acted quickly.” After the daring rescue, the drenched best man and bride rejoined the reception and the festivities continued. What a great story! Can you imagine what that groom was thinking as his new wife and best friend were saving this stranger’s life? There is something heroic about setting aside our own priorities to help others. I don’t know much about this new married couple, but I bet they are doing well. If they continue to serve each other like that, how could they not be? But status, not servanthood, is what most people

“I did not live on this earth to be served but to serve.” desire. One day, Jesus was approached by two of His disciples, James and John, along with their mother. With her boys by her side, she knelt before the Lord and made an interesting request, “Say that these two sons of mine are to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom” (Matthew 20:21). Jesus explained it wasn’t something He could grant and then said something unexpected. He called His disciples over and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:25-28). Perhaps, one of the most shocking statements Jesus ever made is this one about coming to serve and give His life as a ransom. Jesus was, is and always will be fully God. He made all that is and has infinite power. With limitless potential, He can literally do whatever He wants, whenever He wants. And so when Jesus says He came to serve and die, it really should blow our minds. It doesn’t make sense. Jesus deserves the eternal service of all creation, not viceversa. Understanding who He is makes Christ’s humility and service mind-boggling. One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever received was to cultivate relationships by growing as a servant. It’s wise to use our time, energy and money to serve others, especially those who cannot repay. It’s easy to give to those who can return the favour, but we should also look to serve those who have nothing we need. That’s the Jesus way. Even while we were His enemies, He came, He served, He died. We are wise to invest ourselves in serving others. I’ve been blessed by the great example of my father. As far back as I can remember, he has consistently served our family and particularly my mom. His example has set the bar real high for my brothers and me. Like my father before me, I want to live out the Christ-centered maxim: I did not live on this earth to be served but to serve. We Could Use A Little Good News by Phil Callaway Today is Good News Day. That time when we unplug CBC or FOX, and celebrate news that should bring a smile to our faces. In a report we just caught wind of, students let three piglets loose in the hallways of their high school. They used watercolour paint to sketch the numbers 1, 2, and 4 on the sides of the unsuspecting but energetic piglets. This caused no small amount of squealing, some of it among the school administrators. After corralling oinkers 1, 2, and 4, they spent much of the afternoon searching for piglet 3, which did not exist. Elsewhere, a Colorado woman named Elsa Bailey celebrated her birthday by hitting the ski slopes with friends and family in the Rockies. When they realized the significance of the day, fellow skiers broke into an impromptu “Happy Birthday To You.” Elsa has been skiing now for 75 years and thought it would be a great place to ring in her 101st birthday. “I made it. I feel good,” she smiled. Elsa said she’s retiring from skiing, but she’s not done with adventure. In fact, she plans to tour the

s Phil Callaway Norwegian fjords, see polar bears in the Arctic, and visit Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park while she’s still alive. “I’m not going to go to bed and lie down and die, that’s for sure,” she said. Way

She said, “I couldn’t see the beam at all. I did it mainly by feel.” Now she’s learning to pole vault. When her coach heard her plans, he was horrified. “She is not!” he said. But a determined Aria said, “I am so. I’ve always not liked being on the ground as much as I like being in the air.” So Aria learned to number her steps so she knew when to plant the pole to hoist her upwards into the darkness. Aria doesn’t just compete – she excels. In fact, she’s now a solid member of her school track team. Her track and field coach told the press, “We have a little joke, that because she really can’t see where she’s landing,

You don’t have to be 101 to inspire me though. to go, Elsa! You don’t have to be 101 to inspire me though. Aria Ottmueller is 17 and legally blind. But it hasn’t stopped her from overcoming major hurdles. Including, well, hurdles. She’s competed in nearly every gymnastics event, including the balance beam.

it’s almost easier for her. She has overcome so much in the classroom and on the field. She was determined that she was going to pole vault.” Aria attends Valley Christian High where the mission statement reads, “That students know Jesus as their personal Saviour, live like Him, and prepare academically,

physically, socially, and spiritually, enabled to make a difference in the world.” “When I jump,” says Aria, “I’m just looking ahead. You can’t be afraid of what you can’t see.” In the Bible’s book of Philippians, the Apostle Paul calls us to be imitators of God – humble, interested in others, and live without grumbling. Then he says: “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me … Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” I hope you’re inspired by Aria and Elsa. If you’re more inspired by the guys who released the three painted piglets, well, I’ll pray for you. Please do not try the piglet thing at home or at school. If you do, consider yourself warned. Someone is gonna squeal on you. Phil Callaway is the author of ‘To Be Perfectly Honest: One Man’s Year of Living Almost Truthfully Could Change Your Life.’ Visit him at www. laughagain.org.

Free Gift

– No Strings Attached!

People refusing free money? You must be joking. Well, that’s exactly what happened when comedian Mark Malkoff recently stood on a New York street corner and tried to pass out envelopes containing money and “free cash” written on the outside. He was met with upraised hands, avoided glances, and even people crossing the street to dodge him. The response was only marginally better when he handed out bills people could see. It was free cash – yet they wanted nothing to do with it. Something for nothing? What’s the catch? There’s no such thing as a free lunch, after all. There is one gift though, i n fact the greatest gift of all,

5

that’s free to receive. No strings attached. No 30-minute timeshare pitch, no knife demo, and no three easy payments for shipping. All you have to do is accept it. Many don’t know about the gift being offered or have misconceptions of what’s involved, just like many didn’t realize Malkoff’s envelope had real money inside. Thankfully, there’s a book that provides the details. The Bible, God’s Word, tells readers He has offered mankind the ultimate gift – an eternity in Heaven with Him. Missing out on 20 bucks is one thing, this is a whole different ballgame. It reveals how God’s Son, Jesus Christ, came to earth and died to pay the penalty for our sins – then rose again and is alive today. It also tells of Thomas, who needed to see Jesus for himself to believe He had risen from the grave and really had returned to earth (John 20: 24-28).

In this encounter, Jesus goes on to say, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen, and yet believed” (verse 29). Some people can be skeptical when it comes to God, especially Jesus Christ. Yet, others, like those in this publication, will tell you He’s real and has transformed their life. To accept God’s gift of salvation and invite Jesus into your life, pray this prayer from your heart: Dear Jesus, Thank you for offering me the ultimate gift! I believe You are God’s Son and You died – and rose again – to pay the penalty for my sins. I know I have done and said things that are sinful. Please forgive me and come into my life. Help me live for You here on earth from this day forward. In Your Name I pray, Amen

Boarding For

Burundi

Much of Africa is engulfed by poverty, not to mention war-torn from decades of tribal and racial strife. Many people, some quite famous, have come up with ways to help the area, most notably We Are the World. Meet Caleb Sinn, a not-at-all famous Edmonton high schooler who wants to help the people of Africa by – of all things – longboarding across

Alberta for nine days. Sinn, who traveled for three weeks to the African country of Burundi last summer, says, “I love the idea of raising awareness for a country that I love, and more specifically a village where I personally know people.” The 18-year-old YouTube longboarding video enthusiast took up the sport himself four years ago. He was inspired to combine a longboarding trek with a fundraiser for the Batwa people he had

Hopes More

by Bonnie Grove Hope springs eternal, and Natalie Ackerman knows exactly where to find it. “The weekend is for people who are looking for hope,” says Ackerman of her upcoming event. The second annual Hope4More weekend (Aug. 23-25) at Battle River Ranch Camp, located 50 km south of Lloydminster, promises three days of family fun, concerts, and hope. Friday kicks off with renowned speakers, and a concert by Juno Award winner and country music star George Canyon. Saturday has something for everyone including a petting zoo for children and a youth concert by Winnipeg rapper and Grammy nominee Fresh IE. Also on Saturday, attendees can hear Michael “Bull” Roberts speak about his inspirational journey. Beaten and left for dead by his own gang, the former top gang enforcer shares in his memoir The Tender Heart Of A Beast how he left gangs for good and became a follower of Jesus Christ. Saskatoon multi-award winning singer and songwriter Yvonne St. Germaine will wrap up with a concert on Sunday. Natalie Ackerman found hope in the midst of difficulties, and through The headliners Hope4More (Aug. 23-25), she wants more people to find the lifeline will be on hand to they need. share their stories

of hope, including St. Germaine who used to live “a very dark, lonely, abused, suicidal life.” Struggling with substance abuse seven years ago, Germaine recalled how she asked for prayer and immediately knew Jesus had healed her. “I was instantly set free from the bondage I was in. Since that very day, I have been a willing vessel for my Saviour, telling all who are seeking hope that Jesus saves.” Ackerman knows what it’s like to find hope in Jesus. Growing up, her “family was in church every Sunday.” But living on a farm isolated with a mentally ill father, Ackerman began living a double life at an early age. “At age 12, I started drinking then went to pot,” she recalls. Her double life continued through high school, often showing up in church hung over or still drunk. After graduation, she attended a Christian university in an attempt to pull away from the party life, but was soon back living her old life. After a year, she returned home to rural Alberta where she met her future husband in a bar. It was a rocky relationship from the start as her husband suffered from depression. Desperate, Ackerman began reading the Bible every day. She says, “Through that one change, God began helping me turn my life around.” Wanting to share the hope she’d found in Jesus through the Bible, Ackerman organized a Bible study at her work. “We had 10 people attending, and six of them became followers of Jesus.” Meanwhile, her husband saw how Jesus

had made a difference in his wife’s life, and he too asked Jesus to be Lord of his life. For many years, the couple lived a contented life, raising their two children and pursuing careers while continuing to read the Bible and pray together daily. “It was a good life,” Ackerman says, “right up to the night before he died.” Depression, years of trying to find the right combination of medications, and the stress of starting his own business, had left her husband quietly suicidal. “We went from holding hands and praying together,” Ackerman says, “and the next day he went missing.” They found him three days later; he had taken his life. “It was a total shock.” In the aftermath, Ackerman found hope in the Bible. “I knew God was with me, and I didn’t have to face the future alone.” She moved her family to Lloydminster – “that move was one miracle after another” – and began her new life without her husband. “When someone close to you dies, I realized I needed to share Jesus with everyone in my path,” Ackerman explains. Hope4More was formed out of Ackerman’s desire to share the hope she found in Jesus Christ. “There has never been a greater need for individuals to rise up and instill the hope of Jesus than there is now.”

Help Your Teenager Develop Integrity choice. Instead, teach them to ask what’s right with it. If we can help teenagers to consider whether their actions are moving them closer to integrity, then a major battle has been won. In the Bible, it says “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much” (Luke 16:10). As a teenager, I didn’t understand the importance of this verse. Since then, it has taken much pain in realizing how I handle the small things dictates my reaction to the bigger ones. I now start each day by thinking about how my choices dictate my life. For me, “to thine own self be true” means understanding what God wants for my life and being true to His wishes. Step Three: Accountability The key to maintaining integrity is accountability – being responsible to another person for the commitments you’ve made. If your teenager desires integrity, encourage him to ask an older friend, youth leader, teacher or

by Dr. Gary Smalley As a teenager, I assumed I would wake up one day and be a man of integrity. That would be like deciding to run a marathon on the day of the race. Wellness

Drink Up!

by Beth Bence Reinke, MS, RD

It seems like every backpack, purse and gym bag has a special pocket for a water bottle nowadays. We drink so much water in pursuit of good health, it’s amazing we don’t slosh when we walk. But did you know the recommendations about hydration are changing? For a long time, the prevailing advice was to guzzle eight eight-ounce glasses of plain water every day on top of whatever else you drank. But a 2002 review of the scientific studies turned up little evidence that most of us need that much liquid. The Dietitians of Canada state on their website: “Water is one of the best fluid choices, but it is a myth that you need eight cups a day to stay healthy.”

F O C U S O N F LU I D

Having a “squish” in your step wouldn’t be surprising since the human body is about 60 per cent water. Staying wellhydrated is a key part of taking care of your body, but instead of focusing solely on water, think in terms of your overall fluid intake. Dietitians advise to aim for 12 cups of total fluid per day if you’re a man and nine cups if you’re a woman. They suggest you don’t need to drink quite that many cups of liquid though, because for most people, food provides about two to two and a half cups of water per day.

D O T H E M AT H

Fruits, vegetables, some dairy products, and “liquidy” dishes like soups contain significant amounts of water. Keep in mind that your food plus drinks equal your total fluid intake. When you nibble on a salad or bite into a slice of watermelon, you’re chewing on fluids. In fact, that

watermelon and salad are 92 per cent and 95 per cent water, respectively. Even pasta and rice are about two-thirds liquid because they absorb water during cooking. Most of your daily fluid, about 80 per cent, comes from drinks such as coffee, tea, milk, juice, pop, and good ol’ water.

WAT E R I S E S S E N T I A L

Even though you may not need those eight extra glasses a day, water is still vital for good health. It plays critical roles in normal body functions – digestion, circulation, and regulation of body temperature, to name a few. Without water, your body would be dry and crunchy, with no blood, sweat, saliva, or tears. Water energizes your muscles and keeps your skin soft and supple. Moment by moment, your body loses water when you sweat, breathe, and take bathroom breaks. When more water is lost than you consume, dehydration occurs. You’ve probably experienced the parched throat and dry tongue feeling of thirst – your body’s trying to tell you something! Other signs of dehydration include fatigue, dizziness, flushed skin, and muscle weakness. Did you know a common symptom of dehydration is a headache? Yep. Next time your forehead starts to pinch partway through the day, try reaching for a glass of water first instead of a pill bottle.

FILL ’ER UP

When you’re outside in the summer heat, nothing tastes as good as a cold drink – lemonade, iced tea, or a tall glass of cold water. That’s because heat and humidity increase your body’s fluid needs. You also need more liquids if you are exercising, pregnant or breastfeeding, or sick with a fever, vomiting or diarrhea. If you think you’re not getting enough fluid, try these tips for getting in a little more. Drink a glass of water first thing in the morning – perfect way to start the morning smart. Have a beverage with every meal or snack. Enjoy a bowl of broth-based soup for lunch or dinner and eat more fruits and veggies. Take a water bottle with you to work or school so it’s always handy. Water is the clear choice when you’re thirsty, but other healthful beverages provide fluid, too. Whatever you choose, drink up for good health.

D I E TA RY D R I N K

Weight loss experts often tout the benefits of water for dieters. While water doesn’t automatically melt pounds away, it can definitely help. It’s perfect for people who don’t like to drink their calories. Plain water is a zero-calorie, zero-sugar option. Plus, eating water-rich foods such as fruits, veggies, and broth-based soups can help you feel full longer.

by Crystal Kupper The pit bull crouched directly underneath a blanket, snarling. Out for a drive, Jud Heald (pronounced “healed”) skidded in surprise at the vicious canine between the bucket seats. He fought for control as the dog snapped at his neck. The Skowhegan, Maine-native woke up in a panic. The dream had been so vivid that he was sure a car had wrecked outside his house. None had, of course, and he rubbed his still-intact neck in relief. It wouldn’t be for long. One year later, Heald, a thrill-seeking 18-yearold, headed to the mountains for snowboarding. The sport came naturally, as did anything that required staying steady on his feet. A diehard skateboarder since kindergarten, Heald planned on turning pro. But when he hit a funky lip, he flew 16 feet and crashed directly on his head. Oh well, he figured. If he could still move, at least his neck wasn’t broken, right? So he got up and hit every jump in sight, albeit painfully. Wrong again. Doctors soon fused fractured vertebrae back together, steadying his neck with a metal halo bolted to his skull. The teenager had just one question for his medical team: when could he skateboard again? “All I did was skateboard. That’s all I cared about,” Heald, now 36, explains. “I was going to skate all my life, and I didn’t care what anyone else thought.” Yet his broken neck forced him to care, at least about his doctors’ opinion. And they weren’t sure if he would ever pull off a skating trick again.

Depression soon blanketed Heald, a selfprofessed “really rebellious kid.” With his dream of skateboarding professionally on the skids, he turned to partying and smoking pot to fill the void. One night, his halo still in place at a party, a huge dog lunged directly at Heald’s neck twice. The 6-3, 198-pound athlete barely avoided the dog’s bites. Between his earlier dream, the accident, and the crazed canine, something was beginning to click in Heald’s heart. “I think it was God telling me ‘Your life is out of control,’ ” he tells Living Light News. It hadn’t always been that way. Despite having

JUD had just one question: when could he skateboard again? what he describes as a mostly-absent father, Heald and his older brother felt secure with their mother, a pastor. Because of her job, the youngest Heald learned about Jesus Christ as a kid. He even told his mom that he would someday “skate and live for God” after hearing an interview with a Christian skateboarder. But now, with his neck worsening by the week, a skateboarding career seemed as distant as the Pacific Ocean. “[My accident] made me realize that tomorrow wasn’t promised to me,” he says. “My hopes, my future, all the things I wanted — they weren’t either.” Desperate for a cure, Heald began praying,

“Please, make me right so I can skateboard again.” Though he had heard verses since childhood, the teenager suddenly felt a driving need to read the Bible front to back. “I wanted to make sure there was nothing in my head that wasn’t in the Word,” he says. Though he occasionally struggled, he also nixed his smoking and drinking. Within several weeks of Heald’s last-resort prayer, he was healed. Soon, he was back on his board. That wasn’t the only change he made, however. He prayed, “Lord, I want to use this for your glory and honour,” every day before he skated. It became quite clear to Heald that Jesus wanted him on wheels. “I believe God puts in our hearts, writes in our DNA who we are,” he says. “As we seek Him, He reveals the full glory of what He can do in our lives.” And God could do plenty with Heald. He turned pro in 1998 and was soon traveling the world, participating in skateboarding competitions, performing demos at churches, schools, and other community centres and recording videos. Sponsored by big names like Sessions, Dakine, and Nixon Watches, he

attended 30 to 50 events a year. After working for Manna, a Christian skateboarding company, Heald founded his own in 2004 called Untitled. Though they do sell skateboards, Untitled’s main focus is reaching the youth skateboarding scene with its message of God’s love and forgiveness. Today, Heald, his wife Tyann and their four children (three boys and a girl ages four to eight) live in the United Kingdom. Heald works at a skate park as the skate services manager, helping kids with their skills — both in skateboarding and life. He still competes, recently winning a pro-am in Manchester, UK, but Heald considers his message more important than his trophies. “I don’t have my life together; I just seek the Lord every day,” he says. “I think, how am I going to represent Him today? Then I listen, wait for the Lord’s leading as I go. That’s the best anyone can do.”

obvious must – lobster and clams are at your fingertips wherever you go. Or why not sample authentic seafood chowder recipes in each town you visit and compare each to the last? One of Nova Scotia’s most iconic destinations, White Point Beach Resort, reopens its doors this summer after a devastating fire in 2011. Be among the first to experience the main lodge and updated facilities. The oceanfront destination is great to unwind, but the milelong white sand beach, mussel bakes, and tranquil walking trails outside is almost more of a draw than the resort itself. If you’re looking for something a little more traditional the new Hampton & Homewood Suites opens this season in the convenient downtown Halifax, while ALT Hotels is opening a new property connected to the airport for an easy last night in town. Nova Scotia’s a trip your family will never forget – from outdoor adventure to historic cities, there’s something for everyone as you make your way around the province shaped by the sea.

Nova Scotia is full of destinations drawing families to adventure with everything you need for a perfect road trip. It’s the best of land and sea with colourful backdrops, fantastic food, and enough outdoor adventures that you’ll find yourself spending more time out of the car than in it. Whether you use the famous Cabot Trail as a guide or make your own path from lighthouse to lighthouse, there’s no wrong turn to finding the perfect getaway for the whole family to get lost in. Rent a car and explore all the province offers. There’s a reason Nova Scotia’s called Canada’s Ocean Playground. There’s so much waiting in the great outdoors you’ll never want to go inside. Hiking, biking, kayaking the coast, or digging for clams with sand between your toes – there’s a new adventure each day anywhere you are. The Bay of Fundy awaits – and there’s no doubt it will leave you breathless. Explore one of the world’s most dramatic coastlines and home of the highest tides in the world. Go from walking on the ocean floor to rafting a tidal bore (edge of the tide) with an adventure company to get the one-of-a-kind Fundy experience. Whether exploring the cliffs, watching whales and dolphins at play, or sitting back watching the waves roll in, you’re sure to find breathtaking moments all around. It’s not just nature in Nova Scotia though. Halifax is a sizzling capital city awaiting your family. One of Canada’s most historic communities, it has the feel of a big harbour city with all the local flavour you could ask for. It’s a good place to make home base – chances are you’ll be arriving here. Halifax Stanfield International Airport is around 25 minutes from downtown. Start off with a tour from the top of a doubledecker bus to get immersed in the history and culture. Once you’ve familiarized yourself with

the lay of the land, hop off and get a different view by taking the Harbour Hopper on the water. Stop by the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic for the finest collection of Titanic artifacts then watch the ships come in at the Waterfront (and kids can keep an eye out for Theodore Tugboat). Get in the shopping at Spring Garden Road, then meander through the Seaport Farmer’s Market on weekends. Depart towards the South Shore for Peggy’s Cove, one of the most visited locations in all of Canada with the iconic lighthouse and granite outcrop of Peggy’s Point. Few places are as picture perfect, so make sure the camera is handy for great family photos. Nova Scotia’s sailing ambassador The Bluenose II is back in harbour this summer in Lunenburg, refitted like new and better than ever. The faithful replica of the tall ship on the dime, The Bluenose II is another must for anyone visiting the province. 2013 is the perfect time to visit and celebrate the first visit by the French. The founding of the French colony of Ile Royale with Louisbourg as the capital celebrates its 300th anniversary. There are lots of ways to celebrate with the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site hosting events all summer long. Recreate the bustling atmosphere of the colony with CultureFete July 24-28 and discover what it would have been like to live in the 18th century. Jump back to the 21st century with LouisRocks through to October and discover the sounds of a variety of local music. Music isn’t just a pastime here — it’s a way of life. Everywhere you go, you’ll find a song to accompany you and the lively, enthusiastic musicians behind it. Taste your way around the province with homemade recipes and diverse dishes. Your taste buds will clamour for more at each table you leave. With 7,400 km of coastline, seafood is an

More than

Allie Deberry is on her way up in Hollywood — but never

loses what keeps her grounded

by Amanda Krieger If you only know 18-year-old Allie DeBerry from her role as Paisley Houndstooth on Disney’s A.N.T. Farm, you know a girl who’s ditzy, but has a good heart. If you know Allie DeBerry from her modelling career, you know a beautiful, photogenic girl. And if you follow Allie DeBerry on Twitter, you get to know a girl who works hard, loves her family, just got a new pair of rollerblades, and would rather spend her money on food than makeup. So who is the real Allie DeBerry? The answer is just as exceptional as she is. DeBerry, who grew up in Houston, Texas with her parents and two older brothers, can’t remember a time when she wasn’t comfortable in front of the camera. “As a little girl I adored having my picture taken. My mom sort of took recognition of that and got me with a local agency in Texas.” DeBerry’s modelling career took off instantly; when she was four years old she started booking jobs. She worked with Barbie, American Girl, Burger King, Rainforest Café, and had acting roles in several national commercials. Even better than her immediate success was that she had found something she says she had a passion for. “I started taking acting classes and workshops to learn more about the craft. After doing as much as I could in Texas, I asked my mom if I could get an agency in Los Angeles where there

are more auditions,” she recalls. DeBerry started commuting between California and Texas for auditions; her first acting role was as a flower girl in ABC’s TV movie, The Way She Moves. That role led to several guest appearances, in True Jackson VP, and a starring role in two episodes of Disney Channel’s Shake It Up. In 2011, she landed her current role on A.N.T. Farm, airing on Family Channel in Canada and now in its third season. In 2012, DeBerry was recognized for her work with a nomination for the Young Artist Award’s Best Performance in a TV Series — Recurring Young Actress 17-21. “My favourite part of being in the industry is all of the people I get to meet. I’m a big people person and I’m constantly surrounded by new people everywhere I go … it is so exciting for me to learn more about them and make so many unique bonds and friendships,” she says. DeBerry’s character on A.N.T. Farm, Paisley Houndstooth, is known as an empty-headed girl with a huge heart, which makes her a fun character to portray. “My role … is a bit of a dingbat, but she has such a good heart so I have really enjoyed playing her.” This season, A.N.T. Farm got a change of scenery; it moved from its previous setting at Webster High School and moved to a boarding school. “The new sets at the boarding school are amazing,” DeBerry says. “There

[are] new characters and lots more zany fun as always! There’s quite a bit of cutting-edge technology as well.” DeBerry has a full plate with her recurring role as Paisley, online college courses, and several projects currently in production and post-production (including upcoming Vision Vehicle Productions’ movie Pass The Light). When she’s not working, DeBerry isn’t the kind of person who sits still. “I come from an extremely athletic family. My dad is a coach and I have two older brothers, so of course I play sports!” she says. “I [love] the beach, so I try to go as much as I can. I’m fascinated with travelling to new places, cooking, and I play a little bit of guitar.” Despite the fame she’s earned through acting and modelling, DeBerry says she tries to stay grounded and remember she has fans that look up to her. “Kids always tweet me and tell me when I meet them that … they want to be just like me. It’s very sweet and I want to have a positive influence on them,” DeBerry says. “I want them to be confident in who they are and to be kind to others. Those two things are key for me.” It’s apparent that, looking at DeBerry, she’s been blessed with solid parenting. “My parents are absolutely phenomenal. I definitely look up to them with their strong support, love, and faith.” From a very young age, even before she started modelling, DeBerry has

Despite the fame she’s earned through acting and modeling, Allie DeBerry says she remembers she has fans that look up to her.

attended church with her family. “I grew up in church so I’ve always attended church and Sunday school,” she says. In sixth grade, she really started learning more about the church and faith. “I went through a year-long class where you basically learn more about God and the Bible,” she explains. “At the end of the year, you were given the choice of getting baptized, which I jumped at the chance to do.” Since then, DeBerry’s relationship with God has grown. She often tweets Bible verses that encourage her, and says her faith has helped her navigate the entertainment industry. “My relationship with Christ keeps me grounded more than anything. The Bible has taught me to stay humble and keep my focus on things not of this earth. That’s especially important in the business I’m in. Taking into account that a large percentage of the

people in it are so desperate to achieve ‘fame.’ ” DeBerry says her faith helps her maintain focus and make decisions about her career. “It can be tough sometimes, I’ve had to turn down numerous roles because of my beliefs. I discovered, though, that my faith keeps me calm more than anything.” DeBerry is a multi-faceted actress who loves sports, acting, and God. And there’s this: “My fans would be surprised to know that I have a tiny birthmark on my neck that looks identical to a donkey!” Of all the sides to Allie DeBerry, the one to watch out for is the one that’s on the way up. “Hopefully I’ll branch out into some big films or someday have my own show,” she says. “I hope to continue my passion and do more amazing shows.”

Living Light News - July-August 2013 EVERFOUND Everfound everfoundmusic.com Review by Josh McConnell Comprised of four brothers born in Russia, Everfound comes from a family that has experienced tough times. The Odnoralov brothers’ great-grandfather, who learned about the Gospel through radio stations set up by missionaries before the fall of the Soviet Union, spent 20 years in prison. His crime? He owned a Bible. The family was persistent through the generations and eventually immigrated to the United States when the brothers were young. The end result is a rock band that travels the world while boldly singing faith-based songs. Thankfully, Everfound’s self-titled debut record is incredibly pleasing to the ears as well. With distortion in the guitars and power chords aplenty, the band is first and foremost a rock act. But listeners need not worry about wrecking their eardrums. Euro/ Brit rock influences fill the air thanks to plenty of keyboards, layered effects for texture and anthem ballads to blur the lines between upbeat and relaxing. The vocals echo of punk influence, and some songs feel like a mix of U2 and Switchfoot. Aside from a couple of worship tracks, the lyrics aren’t overtly Christian. Everfound’s stellar effort brims with catchy music that’s not overproduced. This is an album all music fans should enjoy. CITIZEN WAY Love Is The Evidence citizenwaymusic.com Review by Lindsay Williams New band Citizen Way is comprised of two sets of siblings – Josh and Ben Calhoun and David and Ben Bledsoe – who met at Judson College and first appeared on the music scene earlier this year with popular radio hit “Should’ve Been Me,” a track that shines a light on Christ’s immense sacrifice through relatable lyrics and an acoustic-driven melody. Their debut, Love Is the Evidence, expands on the pop sensibilities explored in their first single. The album kicks off with the heart-pounding, fist-pumping worship anthem “Nothing Ever (Could Separate Us).” From there, the energy refuses to slow down as the stand-out title track contends for the perfect summer soundtrack, complete with irresistible hand claps. “All Things” follows with honest musings and a hook-laden chorus that will have listeners instantly singing along. Packed with authenticity, the driving “Lights On” is ready-made for radio with its insatiable chorus, while the slower “How Sweet the Sound” plays on the lyrics of “Amazing Grace” for a memorable three minutes. “Love Is A Mess” shows off the band’s penchant for lyrical irony, and “Sing, Sing, Sing” provides a satisfying ending. In a sea of unremarkable debut albums, Love Is the Evidence stands out with its breezy melodies, honest songwriting and brilliant production – courtesy of producer Seth Mosley (Hawk Nelson, Audio Adrenaline) – gratefully free of the typical gloss and sheen that defines the majority of pop albums from new artists vying for attention. AARON SHUST Morning Rises aaronshust.com Review by Lindsay Williams For his fifth full-length release, Aaron Shust once again draws from his rich tenure as a worship leader. The Pennsylvania songwriter recorded the project during a time of personal trial. Shust

JukeBox and his wife were faced with unthinkable circumstances ushered in with the birth of their third child, born with a heart condition that required open heart surgery and diagnosed with Down Syndrome. Thus, the songs on Morning Rises are equal parts prayerful pleas and powerful praise as Shust wrestled with unanswered questions and prayed for his son’s very life. The resulting cuts are some of the most vulnerable of his career. Although the songs were written in response to a particularly dark time for the songwriter, the album conversely radiates promise, allowing Shust to cling to words of truth when he needed them most. “God of Brilliant Lights” kicks the album off with the same exuberance woven through all of the dozen tracks. Highlights include the anthemic “Rushing Waters,” the buoyant “Firm Foundation,” and his sweeping versions of modern worship favourites “Cornerstone” and “No One Higher.” He thoughtfully considered the work of others, in addition to his own. The songs he covered were so carefully picked, it’s hard to distinguish the songs written by others from those Shust penned himself. His warm, passionate vocals are equally suited for both. Morning Rises is the best offering of Shust’s career, proving that some of life’s most beautiful sunrises follow the darkest nights. TRICIA Radiate triciabrockmusic.com Review by Josh McConnell As the lead singer of Superchick, Tricia Brock has seen a tremendous amount of success, accolades and opportunities. The band’s catchy and distinct sound has led to crossover success with song placements in movies and video games. In addition, Brock released her debut solo album in 2011 as a worship project, but with Superchick still on hiatus she chose to take a stab at a pop record this time around. Now performing under the moniker “Tricia” for her second solo effort, Radiate kicks off with a worship ballad that is tender in nature but for some listeners may fail to elevate sonically. The same could be said for other ballads on the record, where it feels like the song could be kicked up with a new instrument by the second verse. Thankfully the techno/electronica influenced pop tracks are Tricia’s bread and butter, with excellent songs such as “Pity Party” or “Good To Be A Girl” feeling inspired by artists such as Avril Lavigne, P!nk or Gwen Stefani. Tricia may not have the most powerful voice for ballads, but these upbeat, synth-infused tracks make the album. There is no reinvention of a genre here, but Radiate will certainly keep Superchick fans happy until the next band outing. SKILLET Rise skillet.com Review by Josh McConnell Christian rockers Skillet have been around for 17 years and have not only become one of the industry’s flagship artists, but have also experienced crossover success in mainstream markets through awards, touring, song placements and media coverage. The band’s sound has evolved over the years, though aggressive rock has always ended up taking the forefront. Now back with their eighth studio album, how does Skillet’s latest effort compare to

19

past outings? Titled Rise, Skillet’s new effort features 12 songs and over 48 minutes of new material. The album kicks off with two songs that consist of the aggressive, punchy music the band is known for. One might say the songs bleed a bit together and can be hard to distinguish from each other, which is sometimes an issue with heavier tunes. A different side of the band emerges in this new album as Skillet experiments with tamer ballads. Seven of the 12 songs have more pop tendencies, with “My Religion” even getting funky with guitar scales instead of power chords. Fans expecting an album filled with aggressive tunes and vocal screams might be in for a surprise with the album’s new tamer focus, but Skillet can expect new fans to hop on board in the process. Overall, Rise is polished, enjoyable and worth considering. BUILDING 429 We Won’t Be Shaken building429.com Review by Matt Conner It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly a decade since the major label debut of Building 429. Space In Between Us placed the North Carolinabased rock band on the map with several radio hits, including the No. 1 “Glory Defined,” and a Dove Award for New Artist of the Year. Almost 10 years later, Jason Roy and company are still going strong with their latest release, We Won’t Be Shaken. The latest batch of Building 429 songs builds off of the singalong success of recent hits like the chart-topping “Where I Belong.” The title track is a memorable melody that features Roy singing resolutely of his faith and trust in God despite the circumstances in front of him. It’s likely the band’s next Top 10 hit and the perfect lead single. We Won’t Be Shaken shows that Building 429 is also interested in expanding their rock ‘n’ roll vocabulary. “Revolution” brings a slight Southern rock swagger to the mix, and “Bonfire” stomps to the beat with clap-along percussion and sweet guitar solos. The latter is likely going to become a concert favourite for fans. “Blameless” and “Set A Fire” bring the requisite ballads to the album, but Building 429 is at its best when turning up the amps. This is another strong rock offering from a band with a solid legacy. FINDING FAVOUR Finding Favour EP findingfavour.com Review by Matt Conner TobyMac has undeniable gifts. Whether it’s his early days with the über-popular dc Talk, an incredible solo career with one hit album after another, or his penchant for unearthing musical gems, the Gotee Records founder has another feather in his cap with new pop band Finding Favour. The quartet already have an early hit on their hands with “Slip On By,” and the rest of the band’s self-titled, introductory EP features several other potential radio hits. “Hero” is a midtempo, sing-along number calling Christians to see opportunities to serve right in front of them. “Shake The World” speaks to a similar theme as a hopefilled anthem tailor-made for the band’s live show. The aforementioned “Slip On By” follows a meaningful narrative arc that encourages listeners to be present in each and every day. It’s an emotional ballad that balances out the first half of the album, while “I Am” closes the six-song EP with a MercyMe-like worshipful refrain. Finding Favour should have no problem living up to their name once the word gets out.
