ISSUE 99 OCT 2014-JAN 2015 THE VESTEY TOWER OUR NEW HEAD CHEF

Theatre in the Quarter In the intimate setting of our Lady Chapel, this moving play tells the story of the famous Christmas Eve truce in 1914. It's presented as part of the Imperial War Museum's First World War Centenary project, ‘Silent Night’. ‘It's the evening of 24th December 1914 on the Western Front. Along the miles of trenches, wet and freezing men face each other in stalemate. Then, over the temporary halt in gunfire, voices from both sides of No Man's Land begin to talk, sing and break the silent night.’ At once moving and entertaining, Silent Night tells the incredible story of the Christmas Eve truce of 1914, through the experiences of a group of Cheshire soldiers and the families they left behind. Against a backdrop of archive images, original music and popular songs from the era, Silent Night vividly portrays events surrounding the historic moment when the guns stopped.

eager to help you make the most of YOUR experience

Advent will soon be upon us, and with it will come our annual opportunity to welcome thousands of visitors for services and concerts, or simply as tourists and casual visitors. As a cathedral our challenge and responsibility is to offer each of them every opportunity to experience the presence and love of God, by the warmth of our welcome and the way we present the gospel of Jesus. On holiday, I'm a great fan of the 'Trip Advisor' website. I use it to select hotels and B&Bs, restaurants, coffee shops and visitor attractions too. I have found I can generally rely on the reviews. As far as I can remember, its recommendations have never let me down. So I also keep a close eye on what Trip

Advisor says about our cathedral. It is usually encouraging to read. We are generally ranked 5th out of attractions in Liverpool and today the overall feedback gives us a 95% approval rating. Of the 1684 reviews currently posted, 1212 are 'excellent' and 393 are 'very good'. Only 14 (or 1%) are 'poor' or 'terrible' - though I always look closely at those reviews to see if there is anything we need to learn! Predictably, visitors are full of praise for the building and its architecture: the reviews are full of words like 'stunning', 'impressive', 'breathtaking' and 'awesome'. There are also often pleasing comments about the organ and the choir, by those whose visits coincided with rehearsals for Choral Evensong. But the comments which give me most pleasure are those which refer to the quality of the

welcome visitors experience when they come. Here are just three comments from recent reviews: 'You get a warm greeting on your arrival and there are a number of guides who we found to be very helpful and informative'; 'It was cold and rainy outside and the warmth and grace this church offered to me and my friend was a very reassuring way to start our last day in this beautiful city'; 'very pleasant and obviously dedicated volunteers, eager to help you make the most of your experience'. Good, isn't it? Take a bow, welcomers and interpreters, shop staff and vergers and others who engage with our visitors on the Cathedral floor. Take an additional bow, welcomers, for the skilled way in which you have been able to combine a warm welcome with the delicate task of encouraging visitors to make donations. We are all rightly proud of the fact that our Cathedral (like two-thirds of the cathedrals in England) is free to enter; and we are all determined to keep it this way. But it is quite shocking to realise that our

casual visitors (those who do not come for worship or other events) donate at less than 25p per head! So for the last two years our Welcomers Team has been working hard to increase their encouragement to visitors to donate, without spoiling the welcome. The Trip Advisor reviews show that the visitor experience remains good; and our end of year accounts show that for the second successive year, donation levels rose in 201314 - and passed £100,000 for the first time ever. This is a crucial part of our income generation, and the result is outstanding! On behalf of Chapter, I would like to express hearty thanks to the Welcomers' Team. But in December, we hope our visitors will receive far more than they give, and in particular that some will take to heart in a new way the riches we celebrate in the birth of our Saviour. »» With every blessing for the Advent Season. Dean Pete, Dean of Liverpool

About TRIPAVISOR Founded in 2000, Trip Advisor has rapidly become one of the most important websites for the travel and tourism industry. What makes it important is that it is built on user reviews. So anyone who visits a hotel, tourist attraction, museum or in our case the cathedral has an easy way to tell their friends, and the wider world exactly what they thought. Good or bad. It is effectively that all important word of mouth on the internet. People take it seriously because it is written by them and not professional critics. It has influenced the way the tourist and travel industry thinks. We’re committed to using sites like Trip

Advisor as a way of getting useful feedback about how well we are living out our value of being a welcoming place and continuing to keep our cathedral as a great place to visit.

THE VESTEY TOWER As part of our series looking at some of the great cathedral benefactors, Dr Alec Ellis has contributed this fine article looking at the Vestey brothers who financed our great Tower. Liverpool Cathedral, standing tall on St. James's Mount, is a visible presence over vast distances. The sighting is, of course, of the Bell Tower, the largest and one of the tallest of its kind in the world. Depending on the clearness of the day, the view from the Tower reveals an amazing panorama. Its height of 331 feet and 1 inch (over 110 metres) is, indeed, a spectacle to behold and is strong enough to carry the highest and heaviest carillon of bells. When Giles Gilbert Scott was appointed architect along with G.F Bodley in 1903, he envisaged the erection of two towers at the West End, in the manner of Lincoln Cathedral and Westminster Abbey; but after Bodley's death in 1907, Scott adapted his design and opted

6

for a single central tower. In 1924 he further modified his plan so that that the single tower would be taller and narrower than originally conceived. In spite of shortages of labour and materials in the Second World War, the central section of the Cathedral was sufficiently complete by the 20th February 1942 for Scott to undertake the precarious task of laying the last stone of the last pinnacle on the Tower. The Tower was financed by William Vestey and his younger brother, Edmund, scions of a West Riding family, who were born in Liverpool on the 21st January 1859 and the 3rd February 1866 respectively. Both brothers were educated at the Liverpool Institute. After he left school, William acquired experience in the family provision business, his father sending him to the United States when he was still only 17 years old with a brief to purchase and ship home goods. At the same time he established a canning factory in Chicago. In 1890 he travelled to Argentina where he explored the uses of refrigeration in the preservation of food; and later in the same year he, with Edmund, established the first cold store in Liverpool: the Union Cold Storage Company. It became one of the largest operations of its kind moving beyond meat and corned beef to a wide range of perishable foods. At first, ships of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company were used,

but from 1909 the partners began to buy their own vessels; and opened a chain of butchers' shops throughout Britain under the name of Dewhurst. Freezing works were set up in Australia and New Zealand. Their Blue Star Line was established in 1911, and by the outset of the Great War twelve refrigerated cargo ships were in operation. Thus a vast integrated business was MILLION now in being, engaged in all areas of processing and distribution. Cattle farms and ranches were also established in Argentina and elsewhere. In 1921, both William and Edmund Vestey were raised to the rank of Baronet for their contribution to the country's food supply during the Great War, when they provided beef, not only for the home market but also to allied troops in France. It is important to note that losses of British merchant ships destroyed by German U-Boats in the War amounted to 7,759,000 tons, a fact which

24

threatened the ability of the country to feed its people. Courtesy of David Lloyd George, the then Prime Minister, Sir William Vestey, Bart. was elevated to the peerage in 1922, taking the title of Baron Vestey of Kingswood in the County of Surrey. He died on the 10th of December 1940, and was succeeded as chairman by Edmund who held the position until his own death on the 18th November 1953. Their ashes were interred in Liverpool Cathedral as were those of their wives. There is an inscription on the north wall of the Nave of the Cathedral dedicated to William, Edmund, their father, Samuel, and the wives of all three. It is set some feet above the spot where their ashes are laid. So, they ended their lives' journeys in the building to which they had made such a bounteous and highly visible contribution. »» DR. ALEC ELLIS

Digging deeper to strengthen our faith not only timely reminders but stirred up faith and understanding.”

DEEPER As the cathedral launches its next discipleship course, Digging Deeper, we caught up with one of the previous participants, Jo Wylie, to gain a personal perspective on the course. Jo supported Canon Paul Rattigan as one of the group discussion facilitators. She said “Although I was helping with the course being part of it refreshed my faith. I believe it is always good to look at things from a different perspective as we do learn more. The teaching was excellent with interesting insights from Canon Paul and Rev Harry”. There were many benefits to being part of a course that made you reflect but for Jo the module that really resonated was on the bible. “Looking at different methods of bible study was wonderful as it helped us bring the bible alive in the group”. Jo found the course to be well structured and very helpful in covering many aspects of the faith. She found participants, from a wide range of the cathedral company, had some great conversations and started to build some new relationships. Jo would clearly encourage people to attend. Even as a helper she found it useful to revisit parts of her faith, to encourage her in the areas she is doing well and challenge her to do more in different areas of her discipleship. “Everything needs refreshing from time to time. The subjects covered were 8

What is Digging Deeper? Digging Deeper is a discipleship course that happens at the cathedral over an 8 week period. Designed as a follow on to Alpha it tackles some of the building blocks of our faith. Digging Deeper occurs on a Wednesday evening as part of our new Faith Academy, a bringing together of the various courses we run that look at our Christian faith and helping us all with our discipleship. The most recent course started on October 8th, details of future courses will be published on the Cathedral website when they become available. »» The Faith Academy also hosts our free Alpha courses for those who want to explore Christian basics in an informal setting, contact paul.rattigan@ liverpoolcathedral.org.uk for more information.

Experience the extraordinary quality of ‘live cinema’ We are delighted to welcome Donald Mackenzie, a cinema organist, who will be performing in concert during a silent movie night at the Cathedral in aid of the organ appeal. Join us for a unique evening of entertainment as Donald provides live accompaniment on our magnificent organ to the silent movie ‘Steamboat Bill Jnr’ being shown on a big screen. This event provides the opportunity to experience the extraordinary quality that Academy Awardwinning film historian Kevin Brownlow calls “live cinema”. The genre of silent movie has produced masterpieces that can seem breathtakingly modern. It is through these films that the world first came to love movies and learned how to appreciate them as art. They have influenced every generation of filmmakers and continue to inspire audiences nearly a century after they were made.

Homemade is the key to culinary delight Two weeks into his new role as Head Chef for the Cathedral’s Welsford Restaurant and Mezzanine Café, Graham Mahony is relishing every aspect of his role. But it is the ethos of having homemade dishes and supporting the local community that really attracted Graham to our kitchen. Graham explains “with many places feeling the pressure of funding then the opportunity to be creative is limited. The cathedral has a desire to produce a rustic feel to its food and that is exciting.” Cooking runs through Graham’s DNA. He got his first love for the kitchen from his uncle who would have the family round for slap up buffet meals. This captured Graham’s imagination giving him a passion for cooking. Trained in Widnes and having worked in busy hotel kitchens and latterly Frodsham Golf Club our role gave Graham an ideal opportunity to work with a small talented team to produce an interesting menu for our popular restaurant. “It’s great to work with a team and with the other chefs here we are able to create, test and develop menu ideas that we can all feel comfortable with, That helps guarantee consistently high quality and interesting meals whenever you visit. Alongside catering manager Neil, Graham has already got some ideas for the future including introducing hand carved roasts and making the best use of the Welsford porch. “this is a fantastic, awesome building to work in and the Welsford porch is a great place to dine. With its views either into the cathedral building or across St James Garden then what 18

could be finer. So in the summer we’d love to use the area for BBQs or Hog Roasts.” Graham’s joining us at a busy time of year with Christmas lunches and dining offers on the cards. But he enjoys the variety. From preparing soup and sandwiches for the Mezzanine café to catering for one of the Sir Giles Gilbert Scott suite events it is clear that the cathedral is a place to keep Graham and the team on their toes. But you can guarantee that whatever they turn their hands to all the food will have that homemade, rustic quality which Graham, Neil and the team prize so highly. »» For more information call: 0151 702 7251.

We will remember them With a poignant consistency, the month of November reminds us each year of those who have left the world we still inhabit. Their voices do not sound in our ears as we once heard them, but memories of them live in our hearts. Centred around Remembrance Sunday on 9th November and Remembrance Day, 11th November our thoughts turn particularly to members of the armed forces who have died in the line of duty, as well as all those who have been involved with and affected by war and conflict. Originally declared a special day in 1919 by King George V to remember the soldiers killed in the First World War, now we remember soldiers from all wars who have given their lives. As 2014 has been a year dedicated to remembering the 100 year anniversary of the start of the First World War 1914-1918 across the country, Liverpool Cathedral is proud to have been involved in commemorating and reflecting on this anniversary with a number of special exhibitions and services that have taken place throughout this year.

EMBRACING HOPE SERVICE The next Embracing Hope service is due to take place on Monday 10th November. Embracing Hope is open to all whose lives have been affected by the serious illness or loss of a child. People are invited to share in a simple, intimate service in the Lady Chapel and visit the Children's Chapel. »» For further details contact Dianne Rothwell on 0151 702 7201.

Bringing our roll of honour to life The Cathedral has been awarded over £9000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to conserve and preserve the physical Roll of Honour our cathedral has dedicated to those who lost their lives in World War One. It is also about bringing to life the stories behind the names in the roll. The story of World War One is a people’s story. A story of heroism, service and for many the ultimate sacrifice. Every name recorded in our roll of honour has a unique story. So we will bring alive the tales of Liverpool’s famous sons including Noel Chavasse awarded a double VC, Colonel Edward Trotter and Captain David Radcliffe. Using our original archive material and links with National Museums Liverpool and other organisations, we will use interactive technology, dramatised tours and engaging exhibitions to tell their stories, and how the cathedral’s story connects with them. It is also about conserving and preserving the roll 20

for future generations. Finally, it is about encouraging others to research, record and share their memories of loved ones who served in the Great War. The project has four main facets: 1. The repair and conservation of the books which contain the facsimile roll of honour. 2. The digitization of the pages to provide more interactive options for future research. 3. The research of some of the stories which lie behind the names. 4. The attractive presentation of those stories through display material, interactive tours and digital technology. Over the summer we held an excellent exhibition of some of the stories from the roll of honour. This money will help us take and develop that so the stories of a previous generation will still be available for the future.
