adio broadcasting has a long and rich history. That history, according to Kurt Hanson, has been long enough to take us through the first three Golden Ages of Radio and well into the Fourth Golden Age, the Internet radio phenomenon we are experiencing today. But how did we get here? In honor of this fascinating industry, let’s take a quick look at the Four Golden Ages of Radio, starting from the beginning. According to Wikipedia and other sources*, KDKA of Pittsburgh started broadcasting as the first licensed commercial radio station in November of 1920. It quickly became a nationwide Thanks to Kurt Hanson of RAIN for contributing his State of the Industry Slide Presentation. For more information about RAIN, visit www.kurthanson.com.

phenomenon, broadcasting jazz during the twenties, then a fixture of the 1940s, connecting the home front to the war. However, it was during the Depression era of the 1930s that radio became more than an entertainment or communication medium. To many it was an escape from hardship. This elevation in the status and importance of radio brought the world into “Golden Age #1,” as Kurt calls it.

Golden Age #1 (1935-1955) Free from the distraction of television, this era was characterized by a wide variety of programs. Comedy — led by Amos ‘n’ Andy — ruled the airwaves. Music, including live symphonic performances and swing and jazz stars, were also popular, as were soaps and game shows. By 1939, American radio had reached the height of its creativity and power. The variety of programming, and the profits for advertisers and broadcasters were tremendous. Enter Television: Although television technology was present in the 1930s, the real public debut of television took place in April, 1939 at the New York World’s Fair. The public was awed, and those financially able immediately placed orders for television receivers. However, World War II put television’s development on hold until after the war, when consumer savings fueled a boom in TV purchases, making the 1950s the first real decade of television. This consumer adoption of television marked the end of the First Golden Age of Radio.

Golden Age #2 (1960-1975) Not to be overshadowed by television, radio needed to reinvent itself. The second Golden Age was the era of the “monster jock” and Top 40 AM radio. Top 40 radio was believed to have started around 1954. Todd Storz and one of his engineers were in a bar across the street from KOWH, and they noticed the same few songs were played repeatedly on the jukebox. Storz took the idea of a trimmed playlist to the station and put it into effect, playing only pop tunes. It was a huge success, and KOWH became the #1 station in Omaha. This format was then used by Storz at all his stations, was picked up by other stations nationwide, and became known as Top 40. Behind the scenes of the Top 40 landscape, Frequency Modulation, better known as “FM,” was born. FM — invented by Edwin Armstrong — improved the audio signal of radio by controlling the noise static caused by electrical equipment and the earth’s atmosphere. Sadly, Armstrong never lived to see his invention succeed. Convinced that FM had failed, he committed suicide by jumping out of his window in 1954. Just a few years later, FM was embraced by the American public and recognized for its superior sound quality.

By the late sixties, most radio stations were moving into not only FM, but also stereo broadcasting capabilities, a whole new dimension for radio. FM and Stereo proved to be the killer combo for music and helped to usher in the Third Golden Age of Radio.

Golden Age #3 (1980-1999) This era featured the growth of music on the FM dial, and AM’s migration to talk radio. While seemingly diverse, the FM radio dial was still largely ruled by the major record labels. Questionable promotional practices that cast a shadow over the industry for years finally led former New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer to initiate prosecutions against labels in the early 2000s related to payola (illegal “pay-to-play”), which settled out of court. This, along with listener fatigue resulting from tighter playlists, lack of innovation in formats, and commercial saturation, helped bring radio’s Third Golden Age to an end. By contrast, Internet radio offered the hope of a level playing field, featuring a wider variety of artists and genres. Suddenly, anyone with content and a voice could become a broadcaster.

Golden Age #4: (2010+) — Internet Radio Internet radio is now filling FM’s void by featuring niche artists and long-tail content that you won’t find on terrestrial radio. As Kurt Hanson has outlined in his “State of the Industry” address at recent RAIN conferences, the last Golden Age is characterized by four key aspects: (1) Personalization, which places the listener in control; (2) More genres and more channels; (3) Fewer commercials; and (4) Ubiquity – laptops, mobile phones, and devices have all become radio receivers. If content is king, then the fourth Golden Age is the crowning jewel of the industry. As Kurt says, “Even the long tails have long tails.” We hope you’ve enjoyed this overview of radio broadcasting – an industry that continues to evolve and inspire. Whichever Internet radio service or destination you choose, one thing is certain: consumers have more variety and control today than at any other time in radio’s rich 80+ year history. Happy listening.

www.live365.com/stations/my80smix The eighties were filled with big hair, acid wash jeans, and great music. Perhaps the most eclectic musical decade, music of the eighties exemplified the look and feel of the times. My 80’s Mix programmer, Kyle Knight, spent 20 years traveling the country as a DJ, program director, and sports director, but he yearned for the days when he could control his own radio station without upper management looming. After partnering with Live365, Kyle launched My 80’s Mix. Knight took his passion for eighties’ music and applied it to the idea of creating a station he could run under his own terms. My 80’s Mix is set up to be delivered like radio stations back in the eighties, talking about fads and styles while playing music mainly from the decade that stemmed from different genres. According to Knight, that was the definition of the eighties: “To me, the eighties were the glory days of radio, because stations were not as tight with their formats. You heard a wide range of music on the traditional Top 40 station.” Knight has found the fine line in mixing traditional radio with modern promotion. While updating his listeners and fans through Facebook and Twitter, Knight also offers monthly prizes, such as Tshirts and eighties’ movies, through the station.

Bud Kress’ journey into radio started with a $20 dollar FM wireless microphone, a garage, and a passion for broadcasting. After numerous shows, Kress made his way to KPOP in Sacramento and eventually made his debut with his seventies’ weeknight show on KGBY. With the advice from a good friend and a thoughtful gift of seventies music, Kress joined Live365 and started his own radio station, That 70’s Channel. Consisting of high energy music from the seventies, ranging from rock, pop, soul, country, and disco, the station brings back all the good music from the decade. The diversity of the seventies music scene is what prompted Kress to start That 70’s Channel. As he puts it, “This was the greatest era in music. All the genres were represented in some way on Top 40.” From The Carpenters to The Rolling Stones, Abba to Queen, music of the seventies brings out Kress’ passion for radio broadcasting and his fun nature. That 70’s Channel does a great job in transporting listeners back to a time when smiley faces and bell-bottom jeans ruled supreme. The station’s variety and content are the main reasons for its popularity over the years. With all the success Kress has already seen with his station, it is going to be exciting to see how That 70’s Channel continues to grow. According to Kress, “The one thing I enjoy the most about being on air is that I know I am making someone smile with the music I play. The seventies made us smile. Look at the happy face – have a nice day, my friends!”

60’s Chicks Radio www.live365.com/stations/tc_60s_ent “I love the 60’s, and I love women’s music, so I thought I’d combine the two for an online radio station!” shared Thomas Callahan, broadcaster of the one-of-a-kind station: 60’s Chicks Radio. After volunteering at a college radio station, Callahan was hired full-time to build a new FM station (WUMB-FM, Boston) that debuted in 1982. He then became assistant general manager and had his own morning show for over 10 years. 60’s Chicks Radio celebrates all types of music by women artists from the sixties. Even though male musicians dominated the decade, Callahan embraced the challenge of locating songs that fit the theme in order to start the station. What’s worth mentioning is that he also programs a broadcast called Seasons & Celebrations that changes content based on seasons and monthly holidays. Callahan’s love for celebrating the seasons and holidays is what led to the creation of this uniquely wonderful station. With 60’s Chicks Radio, Callahan brings the love of broadcasting and exposing female artists together. Celebrating different kinds of music from the women of the sixties, the station does its part to bring these diverse talents into the light. Make sure to tune in to 60’s Chicks Radio and Seasons & Celebrations to enjoy music from two very distinct and rich stations.

www.live365.com/stations/ oldtimerocknroll After receiving dozens of compliments on his mp3 playlists from his colleagues, Allen Nakamura thought that the imaginative and creative tracks he had could be better than the programming on professional stations. After some research, Nakamura paired with Live365 and launched the Sock Hop Oldies station. Specializing in rock ‘n roll oldies from the fifties and early sixties, Sock Hop Oldies highlights doo-wop, rockabilly, R&B, and Motown, just to name a few. The station does a fine job in showcasing classic tracks while still featuring lesser-known artists that were around during the fifties and sixties. In addition, Sock Hop Oldies incorporates many features that highlight the artists played. “Birthday Salutes” is one such feature, playing a block of music from specific artists who are celebrating a birthday. The calling to create Sock Hop Oldies came as Nakamura realized that other radio stations were not playing songs created before the late sixties. From a cultural standpoint, he wanted to keep the music from this era alive and well among today’s musical genres. Like many of the broadcasters on Live365, the biggest satisfaction for Nakamura is having the opportunity to share his musical passion with his fans. “It is so gratifying to receive ‘Shout Outs’ from appreciative listeners, from both the young and the young-at-heart,” explains Nakamura. “If my station can have a part in exposing this music to a younger generation and instilling an appreciation for it, then it will have all been worthwhile.”

www.live365.com/stations/jethrotullradio During his early years, Ian Anderson discovered a passion for music by listening to records of artists that ranged in genre from jazz to swing, and rock to blues. Anderson took his love for music to the next logical level, starting a band and playing different small venues. After some initial hardships, Anderson, Glenn Cornick, Mick Abrahams, and Clive Bunker got together to make a name for themselves, eventually settling on the band name, “Jethro Tull”. Jethro Tull has always been a group based on diversity. From the instruments they play to the style they exude, Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull have definitely made their mark on the musical world. In an exclusive interview with Live365, Ian Anderson looks on the days of Jethro Tull’s past, present, and future.

On Playing the Flute… The biggest difference between Tull and other bands is the energetic flute playing of front man Ian Anderson. “I turned to the flute because I had been listening to guitar greats like Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page and was daunted by the high standards they set for their instrument,” explains Anderson. “I picked up the flute as an alternative to the guitar and self-taught myself different techniques of play. After a few months of tweaks and experimentation with the flute, I incorporated it into the music of Jethro Tull.”

© 2010 JethroTull.com. All Rights Reserved. Reproduced by permission.

On His Musical Style… “The style that comes out during my performances is all an extension of what I feel,” shares Anderson. “Right from the start of the performance, I like to draw in the audience and perform off their energy.” Perhaps best known for his signature “one foot stance,” Anderson attributes his distinct style to the vigor that the audience exudes through the music. Coincidentally, Anderson’s style has drawn comparisons to certain religious deities. “I found it quite interesting when my style garnered comparisons to certain Hindu gods.”

On the Future of Jethro Tull… “We will continue to tour and bring the music of Jethro Tull to the fans. I also have solo performances lined up for the rest of the year,” explains Anderson. Among all the experiences the band has gone through over the decades, one thing is certain: Jethro Tull has succeeded in bringing truly distinct music to the mainstream, paving the way for others to push the envelope of their musical creativity. Broken Bells (self-titled) Sony

Jaime Paiva’s passion for broadcasting developed when she was only eight years old. Following anyone and everyone around with her tape recorder, she would capture any kind of speech or sound around her. In college, Jaime’s love for broadcasting transformed into a job working as a DJ for her school’s station. Following her internship experience at local stations, Paiva made a career of radio and stayed on the air for the next eight years. After a successful run with traditional radio stations, she decided to make the switch into Internet broadcasting. Paired with Live365, Paiva launched I-Sis Radio. Paiva has been hard at work maintaining several stations that span over various genres. When asked about her different programs, she explains, “I am passionate about all music, which is why I have several programs with different formats: Sensational 70s, 80s Flashback, Rock Steady, Easy on the Ears, Jam Packed, State of Independence, and Ladies of I-Sis.” Among all her stations, I-Sis Radio remains one of her favorites due to its freewheeling show format.

Dangermouse and James Mercer’s debut album as Broken Bells push the boundaries of the alternative genre. Filled with experimental yet melodic sounds, Broken Bells fuses the styles that made Mercer and Dangermouse famous. The group’s single, “The High Road” provides a fine example of the sound that is found throughout the album. Dangermouse supplies a perfect back-beat while Mercer adds a sequence of acoustic guitar chords that mesh perfectly. Overall, Dangermouse and Mercer offer an impressive debut album together. Broken Bells proves that when done right, collaborative efforts can push musical limits for the better.

I-Sis Radio was inspired to give equal opportunity to all artists, female and male. With a station that plays a variety of content and promotes equity, Paiva is well on her way in taking that next step in her broadcasting career.

www.live365.com/stations/folkthyme John Enger’s love of broadcasting started out when he was 15 years old. His father built a full functioning radio station in the basement, which Enger used to broadcast to the members of his family all throughout the house. His passion for radio carried over into college as Enger went on to major in mass communications with an emphasis in radio/TV broadcasting and print journalism. After years in the broadcasting business, he took a hiatus to pursue other opportunities. However, Enger’s passion for folk music and broadcasting continues with his station, Folk Thyme, on Live365. Folk Thyme is ideal for lovers of folk music, new and old. Enger plays different variations of traditional and contemporary folk — the simple styles that first attracted him to the genre. According to Enger, “I’m passionate about this particular music because of its simplistic yet powerful message. Plus, I love the lure of a good story… and folk music is chock-full of storytelling.” Along with folk music, Enger also highlights bluegrass, old-time folk, blues, and Celtic singers and songwriters. With a passion for music and broadcasting that has lasted over several years, Enger continues to bring folk music into the light. From broadcasting in his garage to showcasing folk music to fans across the world, Enger’s Folk Thyme is a station that is on the rise.

In 1955, Steve “Papa T” Turner’s grandfather was the proud owner of a local AM station in Mayfield, Kentucky. While sitting in on thenDJ Fozzie Davis’ show, Turner developed a love for broadcasting that would last all the way to today. Let’s fast forward to 2010: Steve Turner and his station, Muscle Shoals Radio, are doing their part to showcase the rich recording history and musical talent from Muscle Shoals, Alabama.

This photo was taken in the MSR studio, located inside an old firehouse built in 1886. The building will be 125 years old next year and Muscle Shoals Radio will celebrate one year with Live365!

On Muscle Shoals Radio, fans can expect to hear all the best music from those who have worked in the famous recording studios. Showcasing all the legends of the time, Turner’s station does a great job in highlighting Muscle Shoals’ rich musical heritage. Another intriguing aspect of Muscle Shoals Radio is the fact that it plays up-andcoming musicians from the area. “Each day and night, we showcase new talent,” explains Turner. “We have our own live recording venue that allows us to not only add to the history of Muscle Shoals, but also broadcast their live From left to right: Steve “Papa T” Turner, Cris Moore (host of The Country Side of Muscle performances on Live365.” Shoals), Gregg Hamm (legendary Muscle Shoals engineer), and Randy Bruce. Overall, Muscle Shoals Radio is a station paying homage to the rich history of its hometown. While the recording greats left their mark years ago, Steve Turner’s Muscle Shoals Radio is adding to the town’s already storied legacy through the new talent that is played on the station. Mixing elements of new and old has been the key to success for Muscle Shoals Radio.

The Black Keys, Brothers Nonesuch Records

Born in Chicago, one of America’s most influential blues cities, Craig Loudon developed an early love for blues and a young curiosity about radio broadcasting. After going to high school with John Belushi and attending college with Robert Weiss (producer of the film The Blues Brothers), Loudon took his degree in Broadcast Production and entered the world of radio. Loudon worked for different professional radio stations and then took his efforts to spread blues music to Live365, where his station, Classic Rock n Blues, has been showcasing artists of the genre for over ten years.

The Black Keys have been building serious buzz over the years. Their latest album, Brothers, highlights the strides the band has made since their debut in 2002. Loaded with psychedelic organ stabs and ear-crunching guitar riffs, Brothers takes listeners on a roller coaster ride through funk, soul, and blues. The album’s biggest surprise is the pleasant falsetto octave utilized by lead singer Dan Auerbach on the tracks “Everlasting Light” and “Never Gonna Give You Up.” Overall, Brothers serves as a pedestal for The Black Keys to build upon. It leaves listeners eager and ready for the next offering from the blues-rock duo.

ggggg Classic Rock n Blues incorporates the works of established blues and rock artists as well as those of independent blues musicians. As the name suggests, Loudon also mixes classic rock songs that have their roots in blues into the playlist. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Cream are just some of the classic artists that are played on Classic Rock n Blues. Newer artists likes John Mayer and Mike Zito also get airtime, as their work reflects the original blues sound. Many of the songs that are played on Classic Rock n Blues have special meaning for Craig Loudon. A variety of blues tracks featured on the station deliver a full spectrum of emotion. It is Craig’s hope that the emotions resonate with his listeners too. To hear some of blues’ brightest stars, make sure to tune in to Classic Rock n Blues.

Louis Simmons’ adventure into radio broadcasting stemmed from his background in production. While in Los Angeles, Louis’ intentions to pitch his television show Smooth Jazz HD called for another means of advertising. After researching various streaming media companies, Louis landed with Live365 and launched SmoothJazzBeachRadio.com. Smooth Jazz Beach Radio, in addition to serving as an advertising medium for his television pilot, allowed Louis to discover new and extraordinary indie artists in the smooth jazz genre. Perhaps the biggest focus of Smooth Jazz Beach Radio is introducing new artists to listeners. “My passion comes from the heart, as I love to share brand new music with the world,” explains Louis. “It is an exciting feeling when you are able to introduce music as well as artists to new horizons.” Along with running his radio station, Louis has plenty on his plate to keep him busy. Being an avid aerial cinematographer, Louis often finds himself in different parts of the country, pairing music and aerial footage together, creating whole new entities. His television pilot, Smooth Jazz HD, is set to launch later in the season. The show will highlight performances from some of the hottest smooth jazz and jazz venues in California. While holding down these two projects, Louis also has plans to launch another station based solely on independent jazz and independent smooth jazz artists. A record label under the Smooth Jazz Beach Radio Network (now based in Jingletown) is in the works as well, dubbed Jingletown Jazz Records. Also, keep an eye out for Jingletown Jazz, a compilation album featuring artists such as Larry Ellis Jr., Pete Gitlin, and more. Proceeds from the album go to autism awareness. With all the projects on Louis’ plate, one thing is certain: quality smooth jazz has found a home on Smooth Jazz Beach Radio. Make sure to tune in!

In today’s musical age, hip hop has proven to be completely versatile. With numerous sub-genres breaking out (independent, underground, Top 40, etc.), it is difficult for casual listeners to grasp on to any one style. Tiffany Edenfield took matters into her own hands and decided to bring the world of independent hip hop to the masses. In 2009, Edenfield was given the opportunity to start her own radio show and partnered with Live365 to debut her station: Wutz Hood Radio. The desire to promote independent hip hop artists is what drives Wutz Hood Radio. According to Edenfield, “Independent artists don’t have the same opportunities and resources available to them. I reside in Arizona. We aren’t known for being an urban market. The radio stations play Top 40, and they barely play any independent music.” Edenfield makes sure that talent is highlighted through specialty shows, female-oriented segments, news and entertainment, and even a slow jam section for the R&B crowd. This way, listeners can see the potential that independent hip hop has to succeed in today’s music market. Besides listening to Wutz Hood Radio, keep an eye out for other types of promotion for independent music through Edenfield’s Launch Pad Music Venue and Wutz Hood magazine, launching in January 2011.

Live365 Album Review

Hip hop on the radio today is a far cry from what was played ten years ago. Along with the times, hip hop has evolved from the Golden Age sound of “boom bap” to being littered with traces of Auto-Tune® and lyrically underwhelming tracks. For Landon Hill, creating his station, Straight Outta Hip Hop, was a means to bring back that Golden Age and relive the days of yesteryear. When talking about his station, Landon said, “I knew that people, including myself, were not satisfied with what was being played on the radio in the present day. They were looking for that feeling hip hop used to give them. I decided to create a station that played the songs you used to be able to hear on the radio; I created something I wanted to hear.” Playing songs that are ten years or older, Landon concentrates on bringing the old “essence” of hip hop back to the people. “I love that I can provide a place where hip hop heads can go and re-live that feeling that made them originally fall in love with the genre.” Hill also takes pride in the fact that Straight Outta Hip Hop can provide a destination where new listeners can come and learn about the history that comes with the music. While maintaining Straight Outta Hip Hop on Live365, Landon also manages his blog, www.straightouttahiphop.com, which serves as a platform to showcase underground artists, deliver critiques and analysis, and even provide a history lesson of sorts as each month’s “Respect Due” column highlights the legends of the genre. With stations like Straight Outta Hip Hop, the golden past of hip hop will always live on.

Big Boi

Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son Of Chico Dusty Purple Ribbon, Def Jam Andre “Big Boi” Patton finally delivers the proper solo album fans have been waiting for. The eccentrically named Sir Lucious Leftfoot: The Son of Chico Dusty stakes the fact that Big Boi doesn’t need his Outkast group member, Andre 3000, to deliver a heavy hitting, lyrically driven album. Production is handled quite well. Mixed with funky synthesizer tones and hypnotizing bass lines, each song encompasses the feel of Southern hip hop. Lyrically, Big Boi delivers punishing punch lines with catchy hooks; giving each track the ability to appeal to the hip hop crowd, while maintaining a sound set for mainstream radio. With an album like Sir Lucious Leftfoot, it is safe to say the wait was definitely worth it.

With 15 years in NYC radio as a prominent tastemaker, George Calle started his broadcasting career working for WKTU in 1996, playing disco classics on Joe Causi’s Studio 54 Showcase. Soon after, he began programming DJ Broadway Bill Lee’s Super Mix on NYC’s most popular radio station, introducing new music to the audience. Wanting to take his passion to the next level, George started his own radio station named Fever 103 on Live365. Fever 103 mainly plays electro vocals but includes other great dance songs. According to George, there are plenty of stations that play the same dance mixes; he wanted to “create a station that stays true to today’s dance floors without making the station sound like a mix show.” To further help his listeners enjoy their experience, he performs custom radio edits to make the station flow better. George truly enjoyed exposing his listeners to new music back in the WKTU days. With advances in technology, he hopes to continue to do the same on a bigger scale. As he stated, “With cars and smart phones providing new options for music delivery, I feel that Live365 provides me a great opportunity to share the vision I’ve honed over three decades in clubs and nearly fifteen years in NYC radio.”

All it takes is a passion for music and a thoughtful present from friends to get a good station going. That was the case for Mike Dailor, DJ of Mad*House: Live Dance Mix, on Live365. Dailor fell into radio by accident when given a broadcasting account by friends who run their own stations. A club DJ at the time, Dailor took his love of music and entertainment into broadcasting, which proved to be an easy transition. Mad*House: Live Dance Mix plays all the best in the latest remixes and dance tracks that are out. The continuous programming style of Mad*House keeps it different from other stations. “The tracks are seamlessly mixed into nonstop sets, just like you’d hear at a dance club,” explains Dailor. “In fact, these sets were actually recorded at one of my weekly shows as they were being played for a crowd on a dance floor.” The feeling that is emitted through Mad*House is one of non-stop energy – the original hope and intent of DJ Mike Dailor. Keeping the energy high is something that the station strives to do with each broadcast. The artists on the station highlight the most popular hits of today. The station’s playlist is dominated by high-energy dance remixes of recognizable tracks. When talking about his station, Dailor explains, “My goal as a broadcaster is to capture that energy and bring the party to you wherever you are 24/7. I don’t see any reason why the weekend has to end just because it’s Monday. Do you?”

House music has always been a genre that has been underserved. Usually found in the depths of a nightclub or in the fields of a rave, house has never broken the plane of mainstream music. According to Xavier Roberts, founder and DJ of House Music 101, “You would be hard pressed to find a true house music station on the FM dial.” Starting out on terrestrial radio in the late nineties, Roberts wanted to veer away from a medium that, according to him, became too corporate. The drive to bring house music to people’s ears and hearts is what prompted Roberts to create House Music 101 on Live365. From the first time he heard house, he instantly fell in love with the genre. The uplifting and soulful songs often painted a picture of life, love, and happiness for the listener, and more specifically, Roberts. Perhaps the biggest attraction for Roberts was its ability to transcend labels. Young or old, man or woman, people from all walks of life can enjoy house music.

Jim Brickman The Essential Jim Brickman

RCA Red Seal Jim Brickman has been a powerhouse name in new age music. Now fans can find his biggest hits on The Essential Jim Brickman. All of the most recognizable songs are present, including “Valentine” and “Love of My Life”. Both discs vary between songs that feature guest singers and Brickman’s signature piano instrumentals. Though soothing and relaxing, many of the songs prove to be a bit plain and onedimensional. The main highlight of the collection is the guest features that are on the album. The Essential Jim Brickman is a wellcrafted tribute to an accomplished artist. However, while it may be a great compilation to loyal fans, new listeners may find it a bit of a stretch to listen to.

We Play It For Laughs! www.live365.com/stations/steve_harper

Comedy can take on many different forms. While most people look to stand-up comics or comedy movies to get their laughs, Steve Harper shows his audience that humor comes in a variety of ways. Harper’s first job was in radio at KAPA in Washington, where his comedic inspiration was found in the form of Homer and Jethro albums. The comedic musical style of the funny duo would prove to be the genre that built his show. After seven years on the air, Harper took a break from broadcasting. Now, after a twenty-five year hiatus, he’s back and ready to make us laugh once again.

We Play It for Laughs is a show that is dedicated to bringing funny music to the masses. Much like the Dr. Demento show, Harper plays both spoofs of songs and original comedic content from artists. Having built up a large library of funny music over the years, Harper is using his collection to propel his station. When talking about the status of comedy music, he explains, “There have been so many great artists who built careers doing funny music. From artists like Stan Freberg to Weird Al, funny music is still alive and well.” In addition to performing in Las Vegas and being a shareholder of the Green Bay Packers, Steve Harper is set on bringing comedic music into the limelight. We Play It for Laughs on Live365 is definitely doing its part to keep the genre alive in today’s musical spectrum. As long as there are stations like Harper’s, it is safe to say that the laughs will keep on coming.

The content that is played on AMA Radio follows that of the Anime Mid-Atlantic convention. Showcasing various anime soundtracks, video game soundtracks, Japanese pop music, and Korean pop music, AMA Radio does its best to highlight the anime culture that originated in Asia. “The radio station grew out of the need to promote and increase awareness for Anime Mid-Atlantic,” explains Fortner. “We wanted to reach out to the fans and others by providing music that people like. I am very passionate about the station, because it grew out of something that we created eleven years ago.” The demand for the anime culture and AMA Radio has grown over the years. With the station running for over three years, AMA Radio has steadily been adding fans and listeners since the start of the convention. Above all, AMA Radio broadcasts music for its listeners. Many look forward to the holidays – a time for family, friends, presents, and of course, music! Holiday songs are the perfect compliment to all your winter activities. But what happens when December comes and goes? Michael Clark had the idea of delivering holiday cheer all year long with his station, Christmas 24/7. Clark got his start as a DJ at his college radio station, WUVTAM&FM. After graduation, he made his transition into the radio business, working at the country music station WKEX. After hearing about Live365 in 2004, Clark jumped at the chance to bring his vision of Christmas 24/7 to the masses.

Live365 Trivia Question:

In the carol “Twelve Days of Christmas”, what gift was given on the eleventh day? answer on page 2

Christmas music is on full display on Clark’s station, as he showcases the most extensive and diverse Christmas songs. Initially playing only traditional holiday tracks, Clark made the transition to featuring more diverse selections of Christmas music. As the idea of showcasing different styles grew, Clark expanded his holiday music destinations, dedicating several stations to Christmas songs that are catered towards kids, instrumentals, country music, contemporary Christian, and more. As the years pass, Christmas 24/7 is becoming the go-to station for all things holiday music. Perhaps the most exciting development since the station launched is its reach: Clark’s Christmas music playlist has been reaching people from around the globe. When talking about his listeners, Clark explains, “I’ve received emails from people around the world thanking me for keeping the Christmas spirit alive and well all year.”
