DFW Social Media News 2013 Letter from the Editor Welcome to the 2nd edition of the DFW Social Media News 2013! This newspaper-style magazine is distributed in print to DFW Rocks Social Media Conference attendees, and online for you. With each edition of this magazine I focus on providing important information to move your business forward and achieve online success, but also to introduce you to businesses and people providing services that may benefit you. At the beginning of this year I started examining the speaker selection and topics, I turned to the social media platforms – to you, my online community. After I had outlined the presentation topics, I contacted a venue (one with more space than 2012 – lesson learned!) and got a contract in place for a hotel that would comfortably handle many more people than the 100 attendees of 2012. As soon as the venue was selected, I was ready to start contacting speakers. Believe it or not, I initially reached out to most of them through a Facebook Message. I wonder what Kate Buck (who traveled from Austin to speak on Social Media Day) thought when she received a message out of the blue from me that said, “Hey, I’m planning a conference in Dallas. I realize you live in Austin, but noticed you went to college here. Perhaps a road trip is in order to visit old friends and BTW … are you available to present at DFW Rocks on June 30th?” That’s the short version, but you get my point. (BTW, Kate graciously accepted and I have had countless people ask me how on earth did I get Kate Buck. I responded, “I asked”.) I have a motto that I follow: Ask for What YOU Want, All They Can Do is Say NO! I have used this strategy to take my business to where it is today. People want to help you, but you have to give them the idea. Of course, you have to ask kindly and be within reason, but people do want to contribute to your success. Your success is also their success.

NosalCentral Internet Marketing Solutions

John Nosal of NosalCentral was instrumental in creating the DFW Rocks Social Media Website. His company donated their services to design the conference website and finessed everything so it looked perfect. Thank you John, for your many long hours of hearing me say, “ I have just one more idea. Can we …?”

Robin Moss, who couldn’t attend this weekend was quite helpful in the initial planning and speaker selection. Make sure and follow her on Twitter @RobinatRibit. Thank you, Robin! I know you’re glad you won’t have to hear me talk about #DFWRocks2014 until January. Patty Farmer was also quite involved in listening to my ideas to make this year’s conference a success! We had marketing strategy sessions many times and she definitely received several, “Hey, I just got an idea to do this at DFW Rocks” phone calls and texts. Thank you, David Leonnig. David is not only speaking on a very important topic, “Social Media Impact,” but is also introducing speakers and videoing two of the Break-Out Session rooms, so that Channel Three Productions, the video sponsor, can have clips to integrate into the conference video reel. This list could go and on with people who have contributed to the conference success in some way! Every single speaker, Twitter Follower, Facebook Friend, Pinterest Follower, and Google+ user made a difference for this conference! I want to thank each speaker individually, but since the conference has 19 speakers (including me) this would quickly turn into a small book. Here is the list of the awesome people who volunteered (yes, I said volunteered) two days of their lives to come to Richardson, Texas and share their knowledge with us. J.R. Atkins @JRAtkins | Lori Barber @MissLoriBarber | Jeff Brady @BradyMediaGroup | Kate Buck Jr. @KateBuckJr | Elysa Ellis @Elysa | Chris Forbes @CForbesOklahoma | Patty Farmer @PattyFarmer | Renee Groskreutz @RalphsDesign | David Leonnig @Jazzpot | Nico Martini @DrNicoMartini | Elizabeth McCormick @Elizabeth_Helo | Rani Monson @RaniMonson | Debbie Mrazek @DebbieMrazek | John J. Nosal @JNosal | Eddie Reeves @EddieReeves | Cynthia Sanchez @OhSoPinteresting | Johnny Tan @FMMKTalkRadio | A.J. Wood @AJ Wood I removed my mention from the list above, but if you would like my Twitter ID, it is @LissaDuty! I do highly recommend that you follow each one of these awesome speakers and give them a testimonial about their presentations. Thank you to Jimi Bratt for assisting and keeping me organized. In addition Jay Calhoun is helping with setup, audio, and technology issues at the event. John Nosal is speaking on Sunday and is also managing technology on-site Sunday. John has done a ton of pre-work meeting with the hotel to ensure we have the right setup, that lapel microphones work, etc., for the big two days. (I did recruit John’s daughter Rachel for several tasks. She helped with feedback on printed literature and is coming out Sunday to participate and assist as needed. Thank you, honey! ) Thank You Brad Ruekberg. Channel Three Productions (@ChannelThree) is providing video production services for this year’s 2013 conference. I can’t wait to see the videoed sessions (which will be provided to each speaker) and the commercial he is going to make for the 2014 marketing material. I have two guest bloggers this year who will be LIVE blogging the speaker sessions and presentations. Thank you Andi Reis of Ralph’s Design and Deli and Edgar for sharing your awesome writing skills with us. Thank You Aida Rojas (@AidaDRojas) for guest tweeting on the @DFWRocksSMDay Twitter ID both days of the conference. Wow! That is a lot of “Thank You” mentions. These people are awesome! I must thank two more people who did a ton of work behind the scenes: Nikki Bassham, the graphic artist who designed the DFW Social Media News, the conference logo, and assisted at the conference. Shelley Fleming, who put her copy editing services to use for this print piece and the conference website. Thank You! I can’t end this letter without thanking you, the reader, who most likely Shared, Commented, Liked, Tweeted, Retweeted, Pinned, Repinned, 1+, etc. Without YOU, social media would not be where it is today! One more thing: I think DFW rocked Social Media Day 2013! What about you? Send out a tweet or post on Facebook and use our hashtag #DFWRocks2013. Conference Organizer, Lissa Duty

5 Ways You Can Use Social Media to Get Rich Written by Lissa Duty of LissaDuty.com Now that I have your attention, I must confess that there is no magic bullet to getting rich using social media, and any social media person that tells you that is misleading you. However, there are many ways to use social media to get attention, drive traffic to your website, and brand yourself as an authority. These can certainly contribute to your goal of “getting rich,” but social media alone will not create this opportunity. Start with answering these questions below, which will help you to use social media to “get rich.”

Let’s start with the WHY • Why are you using social media? • Why do you feel social media is important in achieving these goals? • Why is this important to your potential customer?

It’s time for the WHAT • What do you want your potential customer to know about you or your brand? • What different kinds of content would you share to generate interest about this topic? • What makes your product or service different from the guy next door who charges less? You need to integrate blogs, videos, tips, and other people’s reputable content to get your message across. You have to reach your potential customers the way they learn, to best remember you and your product or service.

Last, but certainly not least is the WHERE • Where is your future customer visiting? • Where is the best platform to market your product or services? • Where is the close (the sale) going to take place? If the best platform to market your product or service doesn’t match where your ideal customer frequents, you will have to get creative and use different methods to drive them to the best platform to highlight your product or service. “Don’t put the cart before the horse” is something I refer to frequently when talking with small business owners about using social media. They have created and started posting on social media platforms with no real purpose or reason defined, other than “a friend told them they needed to,” and I love this one: “because everyone else is.” Even if you have been using social media for years, every now and again you need to review and evaluate the WHY, WHAT and WHERE. Don’t worry, I didn’t forget about Way #4: HOW to Get Rich Using Social Media http://bit.ly/5WayswSM. Head to this blog post where I share the concrete steps you can take to move toward getting exactly what you want.
